Detecting an exploit attempt against a Citrix NetScaler, FortiGate/FortiOS or FortiManager system, or Ivanti Connect Secure gateway requires more than spotting one alarming HTTP status code. Start with the appliance’s own HTTP, authentication, administration, shell, configuration and integrity logs, then correlate the event with identity-provider, DNS, firewall, endpoint and outbound-connection telemetry. A single 4xx or 5xx response is evidence of a probe, not proof that an attacker gained access.

The strongest findings have a sequence: suspicious request, an execution or file-change signal, and follow-on activity such as an account change, unknown web resource, command, lateral movement or outbound callback. Preserve that sequence in UTC, retain immutable copies, and keep “attempt” separate from “suspected compromise” in your incident record.

Reconnaissance or an unsuccessful probe

Classify traffic as reconnaissance only when it is an isolated request or sequence with no success response, file modification, account change, process execution, configuration change or outbound callback. A malformed request, a blocked request, or a server error can still be useful threat intelligence, but it does not establish that code ran.

Likely exploitation

Escalate to likely exploitation when exploit-shaped traffic is followed closely by a result that indicates execution or access: a shell command, an unexpected child process, a newly created or modified web-accessible file, an unknown resource being retrieved, a new administrator, a configuration change, credential use from an unusual source, or a connection from the appliance to an unfamiliar external host.

Suspected compromise

Use the suspected-compromise classification when those signals form a coherent chain or when persistence, credential abuse or lateral movement is present. Preserve the original events and document the timestamps, source addresses, affected appliance, user or process context and the evidence that moved the case beyond a probe.

Establish scope and a reliable timeline

  1. Inventory every appliance. Record each Citrix NetScaler ADC or Gateway, Fortinet FortiOS and FortiManager instance, and Ivanti Connect Secure or Policy Secure device. Include firmware version, internet exposure, enabled VPN, SAML and management roles, management addresses and the systems reachable through the device.
  2. Record retention limits. Note how long each local log is kept and whether rotation has already removed the earliest events. Include retention in the SIEM, firewall, DNS, identity provider and endpoint platforms.
  3. Set the investigation window. Start with the earliest suspicious timestamp, then extend the window far enough to capture authentication, file, process, DNS and outbound activity before and after it. Normalize every source to UTC; retain the original timestamp and time-zone metadata for auditability.
  4. Build a dated vulnerability watchlist. Track the relevant CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities entries and current vendor advisories against the firmware and exposure of each device. A device that was vulnerable during its internet-exposed period deserves investigation even if it has since been patched.

Do not assume that a current version proves a clean history. Patching removes the vulnerable condition, but it does not by itself remove a webshell, reverse-shell mechanism, altered account, stolen credential or other persistence left by an earlier intrusion.

Preserve and centralize the logs

Before rebooting, upgrading or factory-resetting an appliance, preserve the original evidence. Forward or export immutable copies to a separate SIEM or log store with restricted write access. Keep the appliance’s local copy when possible, because it can contain fields or ordering that are lost during parsing.

Log classes to collect

  • HTTP access and error events, including method, URI, status, source address, host, user agent and request timing.
  • Authentication, VPN, SAML and identity-provider events, including successes, failures, MFA outcomes, token or assertion activity and administrator logins.
  • Administrative and configuration changes, including account creation, privilege changes, policy edits, certificate changes and firmware actions.
  • Shell, command, process and system events, including restarts, crashes and unexpected child processes.
  • File-integrity or integrity-checker findings, file creation and modification records, and access to unknown web resources.
  • DNS, firewall, endpoint and outbound-connection telemetry for the appliance and the systems connected through it.

At ingestion, normalize at least the timestamp, appliance name, vendor and product, source and destination addresses, protocol, HTTP method, URI, response status, username, process or command, file path, action, result and event identifier. Keep the raw message as a separate field so a parser error does not erase an indicator.

Citrix files that deserve priority

CISA identifies these NetScaler files as useful evidence: /var/log/httpaccess.log and /var/log/httperror.log for web requests and errors, plus internal sh.log* and bash.log* files for shell activity. Send rotated files as well as the currently open file; the asterisk denotes the rotated variants, not a literal filename to search for.

Hunting Citrix NetScaler exploitation

Start with the HTTP request sequence

Review /var/log/httpaccess.log and /var/log/httperror.log for traversal-like text such as /../, requests containing /vpn, unusual methods, repeated errors and requests for resources that are not part of the appliance’s normal interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the historical Citrix exploitation pattern described by CISA, look for a suspicious POST whose URI contains /../ or /vpn, followed by a GET request for an XML file. CISA quotes TrustedSec’s assessment: “a sign of successful exploitation would be a POST request to a URI containing /../ or /vpn, followed by a GET request to an XML file.” Treat this as a possible-success pattern, not a standalone verdict. Confirm whether the requests came from the same source, targeted the same appliance and occurred within a plausible interval, then look for execution and persistence evidence.

Investigate CVE-2023-3519 indicators

For investigations involving Citrix CVE-2023-3519, search the internal sh.log* and bash.log* files for the string database.php, shell commands, unexpected file creation and access to unknown web resources. Review nearby administrator and configuration events as well. A matching string is a lead: correlate it with the responsible process, source address, file-integrity data and outbound connections before deciding whether exploitation succeeded.

Correlate the NetScaler trail

  • Join the suspicious request to the source IP’s DNS history and firewall sessions.
  • Check whether the appliance initiated a new external connection immediately afterward, especially to an address not previously seen for that appliance.
  • Compare administrator logins, password or certificate changes and VPN sessions with the request time.
  • Look for a new or modified web-accessible file and any later request that retrieves it.
  • Check endpoint telemetry on systems reached through the gateway for credential use, remote sessions or lateral movement.

Do not close the case merely because the HTTP response was an error. A failed response can coexist with a separate execution, file or outbound event, while a successful response can simply reflect a normal page request.

Hunting Fortinet FortiOS and FortiManager activity

Use vulnerability intelligence to set the hunt window

Begin with the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog and current Fortinet advisories. CISA characterizes CVE-2024-21762 as an unauthenticated FortiOS out-of-bounds write that can enable code or command execution through crafted HTTP requests, and records it as actively exploited. Match the advisory’s affected versions and remediation guidance to each exposed FortiGate before narrowing the search.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FortiOS indicators for CVE-2024-21762

Search HTTP and system logs for crafted or malformed requests around the affected service, then correlate the request with a crash, restart, watchdog event, anomalous child process or command execution. Look for outbound connections from the appliance that begin immediately after the request or recur at intervals. A crash alone can have an operational cause; it becomes more concerning when it is temporally linked to exploit-shaped traffic and followed by process or network activity.

FortiManager CVE-2024-47575 investigations

Obtain Fortinet’s current indicator-of-compromise list for CVE-2024-47575 and search it across management, authentication, configuration-download and file-access logs. Preserve the indicator version and the date you used it, because vendor IOC lists can change. Investigate any matching file, account, source address or configuration event in context rather than treating a text match as proof by itself.

Fortinet log sources to correlate

  • Management and administrative logs: unexpected administrator sessions, privilege changes, policy edits, certificate operations and configuration exports.
  • Authentication logs: successes from unusual locations, repeated failures followed by success, disabled or newly created accounts and changes to remote-access settings.
  • System logs: crashes, restarts, watchdog actions, firmware events and service state changes.
  • Process and file evidence: anomalous child processes, command execution, unknown files and access to configuration or credential material.
  • Network telemetry: DNS lookups and outbound sessions that do not match the appliance’s normal update, logging or management destinations.

Apply remediation promptly when the device matches an actively exploited vulnerability. Continue the investigation after patching; the patch addresses the vulnerable code path, not activity that may already have occurred.

Hunting Ivanti Connect Secure and Policy Secure gateways

Review the gateway’s own evidence

Collect web, authentication, SAML, administrative, integrity-checker and system logs. Search for unexpected requests, new or modified files, unknown administrator activity, credential use from unusual sources and outbound callbacks. Compare file-integrity findings with the normal appliance file set and with the time of suspicious web requests.

For SAML-enabled deployments, correlate gateway events with the identity provider. Look for unusual assertion issuance, administrator authentication from a new source, MFA changes, token use outside the normal pattern and activity that continues after the gateway event. A gateway log may show only the local half of an identity attack.

Follow CISA’s containment emphasis

CISA directed agencies in 2024 to disconnect affected Ivanti Connect Secure and Ivanti Policy Secure products from agency networks as soon as possible, with a stated deadline of 11:59 p.m. Friday, February 2, 2024. That emergency direction illustrates the response priority for a potentially compromised gateway: contain first, then perform a controlled investigation.

  1. Disconnect the affected appliance from the network when compromise is suspected, following an approved emergency-change procedure.
  2. Hunt the systems that connected through it, including VPN clients, administrative hosts and servers reachable from the gateway.
  3. Monitor authentication and identity services for credential abuse, new sessions, account changes and unusual SAML activity.
  4. Isolate enterprise resources that show related activity or that were reachable from the appliance during the suspected window.
  5. Limit unnecessary outbound internet access from the appliance and from connected systems while preserving the traffic needed for investigation.

Do not treat a clean-looking web log as clearance if the integrity checker, identity provider, firewall or endpoint data shows a conflicting signal.

Correlate events across the environment

Appliance logs answer what the gateway saw; they rarely answer what happened after an attacker crossed it. Build a timeline that joins the appliance event to surrounding telemetry.

Identity and access

Match source addresses and usernames to directory, VPN, SAML and MFA records. Flag a new administrator, a successful login after a burst of failures, use of a dormant account, a credential used from an unusual geography or an authentication event that starts immediately after an exploit-shaped request.

DNS and firewall

Search DNS for new domains or addresses resolved by the appliance or connected hosts. Compare firewall sessions before and after the event, paying attention to new destinations, uncommon ports, repeated callbacks and connections that persist after the initial request.

Endpoint and server telemetry

On systems reached through the appliance, review process creation, service installation, scheduled tasks, web-server files, remote administration and credential access. The absence of an endpoint alert does not disprove appliance compromise, but a matching endpoint event can turn an ambiguous gateway signal into a confirmed incident path.

File and configuration integrity

Compare modified files, configuration exports, certificates, policies and administrator lists with a known-good baseline. Record the first and last modification times and retain the file or configuration copy for forensic review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide whether the evidence is an attempt or a compromise

Classification Minimum practical evidence Next action
Reconnaissance or blocked probe Suspicious request with no follow-on success response, file change, account change, process execution or outbound callback Retain the event, tune detection and continue checking for delayed activity
Likely exploitation Exploit-shaped traffic followed by an unknown resource, shell or process signal, file change, configuration change or unusual outbound connection Escalate, preserve evidence and contain according to the appliance and incident plan
Suspected compromise Coherent exploit-to-persistence chain, credential abuse, lateral movement or repeated unauthorized activity Isolate the device and affected resources, investigate credentials and persistence, and rebuild or restore only through a documented recovery process

Write the reasoning in incident notes: identify the triggering request, the corroborating event, the time relationship and the data that was checked but did not support compromise. This prevents a later reviewer from mistaking a single indicator for a complete finding.

Compare the three appliance families when designing detections

Appliance family Highest-value local evidence Most specific documented lead Evidence that must come from elsewhere
Citrix NetScaler ADC/Gateway /var/log/httpaccess.log, /var/log/httperror.log, sh.log* and bash.log* POST containing /../ or /vpn followed by a GET for an XML file; CVE-2023-3519 searches for database.php and unknown web resources Source identity, process context, file-integrity changes, outbound connections and activity on systems behind the gateway
Fortinet FortiOS/FortiManager HTTP, system, management, authentication, configuration, file-access and process or crash events CVE-2024-21762 crafted HTTP requests linked to crashes, restarts, child processes or outbound activity; FortiManager CVE-2024-47575 searches based on Fortinet’s current IOC list Vendor IOC context, identity events, DNS and firewall sessions, and endpoint effects
Ivanti Connect Secure/Policy Secure Web, authentication, SAML, administrative, integrity-checker and system logs Unexpected requests or files linked to unknown administrator activity, credential anomalies or outbound callbacks Identity-provider records, VPN-connected systems, DNS, firewall and endpoint telemetry

Across all three families, detection quality depends on retention and tamper resistance as much as on indicator choice. Centralized immutable copies and cross-source correlation make it harder for a compromised appliance or a routine rotation cycle to erase the timeline.

Practical SIEM hunting patterns

Adapt the field names to your SIEM; the following are search ideas, not vendor-specific query syntax.

  • Search Citrix HTTP events where the method is POST and the URI contains /../ or /vpn. Join to a later GET for an XML filename on the same appliance and from the same source when available.
  • Search Citrix shell logs for database.php, unexpected file paths, shell interpreters, account-management commands and configuration writes. Join each result to file-integrity and outbound-network events.
  • Search FortiOS HTTP and system events for malformed or unusually long requests, then join to crash, restart, child-process and outbound-connection events in the same time window.
  • Search FortiManager management, authentication, configuration-download and file-access logs using the current Fortinet IOC list for CVE-2024-47575.
  • Search Ivanti web, SAML, administrative and integrity-checker events for new files, unknown administrators, unusual credential sources and callbacks; join to identity-provider, DNS, firewall and endpoint data.

Alerting should preserve the raw request, the normalized fields, the appliance firmware and the exact UTC time. An alert that discards those details forces responders to repeat the collection step under pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recovery and return-to-service checks

  1. Contain. Disconnect or isolate the appliance when the evidence or incident plan calls for it, and restrict unnecessary outbound access.
  2. Preserve. Export logs, configurations, file-integrity results, process data and relevant network records before destructive changes.
  3. Scope. Hunt connected systems, identity services, DNS, firewall and endpoint telemetry for the full investigation window.
  4. Remediate. Apply the vendor-approved fix or rebuild from a trusted image, rotate credentials and certificates that could have been exposed, and remove unauthorized accounts, files and configuration changes.
  5. Validate. Confirm the vulnerable condition is gone, verify the expected file and configuration baseline, test authentication and logging, and ensure centralized forwarding works.
  6. Monitor. Keep heightened detection for delayed callbacks, renewed account abuse and access to previously affected resources before restoring normal exposure.

A device is ready to return to service only after the organization has addressed both the vulnerability and the possibility of persistence. “Patched” is a remediation state; it is not, by itself, an investigation conclusion.
