If an AhsayCBS server shows unexpected JSP files, unfamiliar folders, unauthorized replication receivers, or new administrator accounts, treat it as compromised. Isolate it, preserve evidence, rotate credentials from a trusted system, and plan a full rebuild rather than relying on a hotfix or deleting visible files. Ahsay says a rebuild is the way to restore a known-clean state after the vulnerabilities disclosed in October 2026.
What happened to AhsayCBS servers in October 2026?
Ahsay began receiving partner reports of unauthorized access on 9 October 2026. The incidents were associated with two vulnerabilities: CVE-2026-105133, described by Check Point as an authentication-bypass issue, and CVE-2026-105134, a Replication Receiver command-injection flaw that can permit arbitrary command execution.
The second vulnerability is especially relevant to web-shell investigations. If an attacker can execute commands on the backup server, they may write JSP web shells into the application, create operating-system persistence, add privileged accounts, deploy remote-access tools, or install a miner. A web shell is only one possible consequence, not the complete scope of compromise.
| Date | Event | Operational significance |
|---|---|---|
| 9 October 2026 | Ahsay began receiving partner reports of unauthorized access. | Incidents may predate the public hotfixes, so a server patched after this date still needs investigation. |
| 10 October 2026 | Ahsay released v10.3.4.45 for the v10 branch. | Use this hotfix for a v10 installation, but do not treat installation alone as proof that an earlier intrusion was removed. |
| 12 October 2026 | Ahsay released v9.15.2.70 for the v9 branch and directed v7 and v8 operators to upgrade. | Operators on v7 or v8 should move to v9.15.0.0 and then apply v9.15.2.70. |
| 13 October 2026 | Ahsay recommended a full backup-server rebuild. | The vendor’s preferred recovery is a known-clean reinstall, not an in-place deletion exercise. |
| 15 October 2026 | Check Point published advisories for both CVEs. | Public technical descriptions confirmed the authentication-bypass and command-injection paths. |
Ahsay also states that earlier patches did not completely address these two vulnerabilities. Installing an older update and assuming the server is safe is therefore not sufficient.

How to tell whether an AhsayCBS server has a web shell
One indicator alone may be explainable by an administrator or a legitimate upgrade. Multiple indicators, unexplained creation times, or activity that began around the incident period should be handled as a compromise. Ahsay identifies the following signs.
| Indicator | Where to look | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Unexpected top-level folders | Root of the Windows or Linux drive | Examples reported by Ahsay include ahsay_ts, ahsay_t8, ahsay_t9, ahsay_t20, ahsay_t21, srv, user, and opt. Their presence is suspicious when they are not explained by your deployment records. |
| Randomly named JSP files | The %CBS%webapps directory |
Several unexpected .jsp files can provide command execution through the application server. |
| Lower-case alphanumeric directories | Usually under the Ahsay web application area | Ahsay gives xtj7iu, kje74x, and 103y9r as examples. These names are indicators, not a complete signature list. |
| Unauthorized RPS receivers | AhsayCBS receiver configuration | An attacker may add a receiver to maintain access or move data. Compare every receiver with an approved inventory. |
| Unauthorized administrator accounts | AhsayCBS user administration | Accounts with the Admin privilege can survive deletion of a web shell and provide a separate route back into the system. |
Do not interpret the absence of these exact names as proof of a clean host. Attackers can rename files, use existing tools, or leave persistence outside the web application.
Preserve evidence before deleting anything
Deleting a suspicious JSP file can remove the most visible symptom while destroying information needed to find a second shell or identify the initial access time. Before cleanup, preserve a forensic copy where practical and record enough context to establish whether persistence remains.

- Record the complete path, filename, owner, permissions, creation time, modification time, and access time of each suspicious file or directory.
- Calculate and store cryptographic hashes for suspicious files, binaries, installers, and configuration exports.
- Record when AhsayCBS accounts and RPS receivers were created, changed, or granted privileges.
- Capture process trees showing the Ahsay service and every unusual child process.
- Record active and recent network connections, including destination addresses, ports, and the process that opened each connection.
- Export relevant AhsayCBS logs and operating-system logs before log rotation overwrites them.
- Document the exact time of isolation, patching, account changes, and any attempted remediation so later investigators can distinguish attacker activity from response activity.
Store the evidence on a separate trusted system with restricted access. Do not execute unknown files merely to see what they do, and do not copy suspicious JSP files into a production server for testing.
Immediate containment: isolate the host without losing control
- Restrict the management interface. Remove direct internet exposure and permit administration only from a controlled management network or approved jump host. If the service must remain reachable for business continuity, narrow access to known source addresses while the incident is assessed.
- Segment the server. Separate the backup host from ordinary workstation and server networks. Preserve a forensic copy where practical before powering it off or making destructive changes.
- Keep the system available only as long as necessary. Every additional minute online can give an attacker time to use a shell, create an account, or alter logs. If active malicious behavior is visible, prioritize containment over convenience.
- Do not equate patching with eradication. Bitdefender summarizes the distinction precisely: “Patching closes the entry point but does not remove webshells or other access an attacker has already planted.”
- Invalidate active sessions. Force sign-out or session invalidation for AhsayCBS administration and any connected management interfaces after evidence needed for the investigation has been preserved.
- Rotate credentials from a separate trusted host. Change AhsayCBS administrator credentials, operating-system accounts, database credentials, backup-storage credentials, API secrets, integration passwords, and any administrator credentials that may have been used on the server. Do not perform the rotation from the potentially compromised host.
Credential rotation is containment, not proof of recovery. If an attacker created a new privileged account, installed a service, or retained a second access path, changing one password will not remove it.
Investigate persistence beyond the webapps directory
A clean-looking webapps directory does not establish that the server is safe. Bitdefender reports that attackers may leave web shells, remote-access services, miners, or other persistence for later use. Hunt across the host and its connected systems.

Windows checks
- Review child processes launched by the Ahsay service and identify interpreters, command shells, scripting engines, downloaders, or binaries that do not belong to the installation.
- Inspect newly installed services, service account changes, scheduled tasks, startup entries, and unusual executable paths.
- Check for new local users, unexpected members of administrators groups, and changes to remote-management permissions.
- Review outbound connections for destinations and ports not required by backup operations, and map each connection to its owning process.
- Compare system binaries and security settings with a known-good baseline rather than trusting timestamps alone.
Linux checks
- Review child processes of the Ahsay service, systemd units, init scripts, cron and anacron entries, shell startup files, and SSH authorization files.
- Inspect newly created users, changes to sudo access, and unusual files in temporary, service, home, and top-level directories.
- Map outbound connections to processes and accounts, paying attention to long-lived connections or destinations unrelated to backup traffic.
- Check executable permissions, ownership changes, and binaries added outside the package-managed installation.
Huntress associated this campaign with JSP web shells and an XMRig miner disguised as edge.exe. Treat that report as campaign context, not as a complete indicator-of-compromise list: a different filename, miner, or persistence mechanism can produce the same risk.

Should you clean the server in place or rebuild it?
In-place cleanup can reduce downtime, but it requires confidence that every persistence mechanism has been found. A rebuild takes longer and requires configuration recovery, yet it gives the strongest practical assurance that attacker-controlled software is not being carried forward. Ahsay recommends the full rebuild.
| Decision factor | In-place cleanup | Full rebuild |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence preservation | Allows the live host to remain available for collection, but every change can alter evidence. | Requires careful imaging and records before reinstallation; once captured, the old host can be taken out of service. |
| Confidence that persistence is gone | Lower unless the investigation finds every shell, service, task, account, and credential exposure. | Higher because the operating system and application are installed again from trusted media and versions. |
| Downtime | Usually shorter, although extended investigation can erase the apparent time advantage. | Longer while the operating system, AhsayCBS, configuration, receivers, certificates, integrations, and jobs are restored. |
| Pre-compromise configuration validation | Harder because compromised files and settings remain mixed with legitimate ones. | Use an Auto Save server-configuration version from before the compromise and verify each restored item. |
| Risk of reintroducing attacker files | High if administrators delete only visible JSP files or restore the existing installation in place. | Lower when unknown executables, JSP files, service definitions, and configuration exports from the old host are excluded. |
Choose professional incident-response support when there are unauthorized privileged accounts, persistent services, unexplained process activity, or evidence that the host was compromised before patching. Ahsay specifically recommends qualified cybersecurity professionals for a thorough investigation and remediation in that situation.

How to rebuild an AhsayCBS backup server
The following sequence follows Ahsay’s recovery guidance and adds the validation steps needed to avoid carrying persistence into the replacement system.
- Preserve evidence and document dependencies. Capture the old server’s relevant logs, file metadata, hashes, process information, network connections, account and receiver timestamps, and a list of integrations and backup jobs. Record certificates and other values that must be reissued or verified, but do not blindly export and restore compromised configuration.
- Take the old host out of service. Keep the preserved evidence offline or access-controlled. Block its management and backup traffic so it cannot compete with the replacement host or reconnect to an attacker.
- Reinstall the operating system. Reinstall Windows or Linux on the backup server using trusted installation media and the organization’s approved hardening baseline. Apply operating-system security updates before exposing the host to production networks.
- Install the correct AhsayCBS base version. For a v10 deployment, install AhsayCBS v10.3.4.0. For a v9 deployment, install v9.15.0.0. Operators still on v7 or v8 should move to v9.15.0.0 rather than rebuilding onto those older branches.
- Apply the security hotfix. Update v10 to v10.3.4.45 or update v9 to v9.15.2.70. Verify the installed version in the product’s normal version information and retain the update record. Do not expose the management interface broadly until the hotfix is applied.
- Restore a pre-compromise Auto Save configuration. Select a server-configuration version whose timestamp predates the suspicious folder or file. Ahsay recommends choosing a version at least one day before the timestamp of the suspicious artifact. If no trustworthy pre-compromise version exists, rebuild the configuration manually from independently verified records.
- Recreate or verify receivers and users. Compare every RPS receiver and AhsayCBS account with an approved inventory. Recreate only legitimate objects, verify privileges, and remove anything that cannot be attributed to an authorized administrator.
- Reissue or verify certificates and integrations. Check certificate ownership, validity, trust chains, API integrations, storage connections, and external management links. Rotate secrets rather than restoring credentials that were present on the compromised host.
- Recreate backup jobs. Validate destinations, retention, schedules, encryption settings, and service accounts against trusted documentation. Test a controlled backup and restore before returning the server to normal workloads.
- Monitor the replacement. Watch AhsayCBS and operating-system logs, process trees, account changes, services, scheduled tasks, and outbound connections for renewed unauthorized activity. Keep heightened monitoring during the period required by your incident-response plan.
Do not restore unknown executables, JSP files, service definitions, or configuration exports from the compromised server. A configuration file that looks familiar can contain an attacker-created receiver, account, integration, or path.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What a successful recovery should prove
- The replacement host runs a supported base version and the applicable hotfix: v10.3.4.45 for v10 or v9.15.2.70 for v9.
- The operating system was freshly installed or otherwise established as known clean, with updates and hardening applied.
- The restored Auto Save configuration predates the compromise, or each setting was rebuilt and verified from trusted records.
- Every AhsayCBS account, administrator privilege, and RPS receiver has an owner and a documented purpose.
- Credentials, sessions, API secrets, certificates, database access, storage access, and integration passwords were rotated or reissued from a trusted system.
- No unexplained JSP files, random lower-case alphanumeric directories, top-level folders, services, scheduled tasks, startup entries, binaries, or outbound connections remain.
- Backup and restore tests succeed, and monitoring generates records that can be reviewed by an administrator or incident-response team.
Common mistakes that leave a web shell behind
Installing the hotfix and stopping
The hotfix closes the vulnerable entry point, but it does not remove files, accounts, services, miners, or remote-access tools already planted. Patch first for containment, then investigate and recover.

Deleting only the files with random names
A JSP shell may have created a second shell under another name or used a service, scheduled task, account, or remote-access utility for persistence. File deletion without host-wide review creates false confidence.
Restoring the entire old installation
Copying the old application directory, service definitions, executables, or configuration exports can reintroduce the compromise. Restore only a validated pre-compromise configuration or rebuild settings manually.
Changing passwords on the compromised server
If the host is monitored by an attacker, newly entered credentials can be captured. Perform rotation from a separate trusted host and invalidate existing sessions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Assuming a missing indicator means no compromise
The folder and filename examples are useful leads, not an exhaustive signature set. Attackers can use different names and persistence mechanisms, so process, account, service, task, log, and network review remain necessary.
Bottom line for administrators
An AhsayCBS server with suspicious JSP files, unexpected top-level folders, unauthorized RPS receivers, or new administrator accounts should be handled as compromised. Isolate it, preserve evidence, investigate persistence, rotate credentials, and rebuild from trusted software and a pre-compromise configuration. Applying v10.3.4.45 or v9.15.2.70 is necessary for the affected branches, but it is not a substitute for eradication. Ahsay’s own statement is unambiguous: “To ensure that your AhsayCBS backup server is completely free from any issues resulting from these security vulnerabilities, Ahsay strongly recommends performing a full rebuild of the backup server.”
