To find an unauthorized AI agent, check every route it could use: browser extensions or browser task features, connected OAuth apps, and organizational service identities or API credentials. Then inspect permissions, who approved them, ownership details, and activity records—not just the app’s name. Remove browser access in the browser or managed-browser controls; revoke or block cloud access through the identity provider or SaaS administration console. If you suspect account compromise, preserve logs and investigate sessions, tokens, and credentials as well as the app itself.

Where an AI agent can get access

“AI agent” is not a single kind of account or installation. An assistant may act through a browser extension, a browser feature that performs tasks in an authenticated session, an OAuth-connected app, or an organizational service identity using API credentials. Those routes have different owners and controls. Removing an extension does not revoke an app’s cloud consent, and revoking an OAuth grant does not remove a browser extension.

Investigate the layers that apply to the affected user and services. A product name that sounds ordinary may have powerful access; an AI label does not, by itself, establish that an app is malicious or unauthorized. The stronger evidence is whether its permissions match an approved purpose, who authorized it, who owns it, and what activity appears in available records. Microsoft’s OAuth app guidance covers investigating app permissions and authorizing users; the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) also recommends tracking AI accounts, service identities, and credentials.

Access route What to inspect Where to contain it Evidence to preserve or verify
Browser extension Installed extensions, owner and purpose, and access to website content or broad host permissions The browser’s extension controls, or an organization’s managed-browser policy Extension details and any available browser or management records
Browser task feature Whether a task is active and which sensitive services or pages it can use through the signed-in session The task’s Stop or Take over control, where available The task and relevant account activity, if recorded
OAuth-connected cloud app App identity, owner, requested permissions, authorizing users, and grant or sign-in activity The identity provider or SaaS administrator’s consent, block, or ban controls Grant, audit, sign-in, and subsequent activity records
Service identity or API credential Identity owner, credential purpose, granted access, and observed activity The system that issued the identity or credential; revoke affected credentials as part of incident response when appropriate Credential and identity records, audit logs, and relevant activity

Exact menus and available records vary by browser, provider, tenant, and management setup. The steps below focus on what to establish and what control to use, rather than assuming every organization has the same console or labels.

Start with the affected account, device, and timeline

  1. Identify the user and browser profile. Record the account, device, browser profile, cloud tenant, and services that may be involved. A personal profile and a work profile can have different extensions, sign-ins, and management policies.
  2. Write down when and how you noticed the access. Note the discovery time, suspicious activity, unfamiliar app or extension names, alerts, and any permission prompts. Keep the original details rather than relying on memory.
  3. Preserve relevant records before making changes if compromise is suspected. Save available audit, sign-in, or activity records and note where they came from. The ACSC recommends preserving logs during incident response; your organization’s retention and response procedures determine what records are available.
  4. Separate suspicion from confirmation. An unfamiliar name is a lead, not proof. Record what is not recognized, then verify its owner, purpose, permissions, and activity with the responsible user or administrator.
  5. Decide whether this is a single-user or wider investigation. If an app appears in a tenant’s connected-app records, check whether other users granted it access. If a managed extension is involved, determine whether policy deployed it to more than one profile.

How to detect an unauthorized AI agent in your browser

Review installed extensions and their permissions

  1. Open the browser’s installed-extension list. Use the browser’s own extension controls; the exact path and labels depend on the browser and version. In a managed workplace, an administrator may need to inspect the browser management policy as well as a user’s local list.
  2. Review each unfamiliar or unnecessary extension. Look for an accountable owner and a business or personal purpose that the user can confirm. Check whether the extension is still needed and whether it was approved under the organization’s policy.
  3. Compare permissions with the stated purpose. Pay particular attention to access to website content and broad host access. Chrome for Developers explains that extensions need host permission to access a page and may use host permissions to manipulate it with JavaScript. A permission can be legitimate for an extension’s purpose, but broad access deserves scrutiny when the function does not appear to require it.
  4. Look for evidence of use where your setup records it. Review available browser-management, security, or activity records for installation or policy changes. Do not assume that every browser exposes a complete extension activity log.
  5. Ask the owner or administrator to validate uncertain items. Confirm the extension’s publisher or accountable owner through a trusted organizational channel, not through a message or link supplied by the extension itself. Compare the actual access with the approved need.

Do not use a name or icon as the deciding test. An unapproved extension may not advertise itself as an AI tool, and an AI-branded extension may be legitimate but still request more access than its approved purpose requires.

Stop an active browser task

A browser agent or task feature can operate within an already authenticated session. That means the browser may be able to interact with pages the user can already access; an extension list alone will not reveal an active task. Check for an active task or automation in the browser interface and inspect what it is doing, especially when it touches sensitive services or performs consequential actions.

For Chrome’s auto-browse feature, Google’s support guidance says to use Stop or Take over if it is doing something unwanted. Keep the user in control of sensitive actions and monitor high-impact tasks. Google also cautions that “Chrome’s safeguards for auto browse described above don’t guarantee protection against all risks.”

How to remove an AI extension from Chrome or another browser

  1. Contain an active task first. If a browser task is currently doing something unwanted, use its available Stop or Take over control before investigating the extension list.
  2. Disable or remove the suspect extension using the browser’s extension controls. Disabling is a reversible way to stop an extension while you confirm its identity; removal is appropriate when it is not approved or needed. The exact controls differ among browsers.
  3. Check whether policy manages the extension. If a work browser reinstalls it, hides removal controls, or shows that an administrator manages it, contact the organization’s browser or security administrator. A managed-browser policy may be the control that needs changing.
  4. Check affected profiles and devices. Removing an extension from one browser profile does not establish that it is gone from other profiles or devices. Review the relevant managed inventory or each affected profile.
  5. Record the result and verify it. Confirm that the extension is no longer enabled in the affected profile and, where available, check management records for the policy or installation state.

Removing a browser extension addresses that browser access route. If the same product also has an OAuth grant, service identity, or API credential, investigate and revoke those separately.

How to find apps with access to files, email, or calendars

Connected apps may request permissions through OAuth, an authorization mechanism that lets an app access specified services or data after a user or administrator grants consent. The permissions might cover services such as email, files, or calendars. The practical question is not only whether an app is unfamiliar, but what it can access, who authorized it, and whether that access matches an approved need.

  1. Search the identity provider or SaaS administration console for connected or OAuth apps. If you are a user rather than an administrator, use the account’s available connected-app controls and ask an administrator to investigate organization-wide records.
  2. Inspect the app identity and ownership details. Review the displayed app name, owner or publisher information, and reply or redirect destinations where the console provides them. Confirm the app’s identity and business purpose with the responsible owner through a trusted channel.
  3. Read the requested permissions or scopes. Compare what the app can access with its stated purpose and approved requirements. A tool that needs to process a file may have a defensible reason to access files; broader access to unrelated data requires explanation and approval.
  4. Identify the users who authorized it. Determine whether the grant was made by one user, several users, or an administrator, according to the provider’s records. Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps documentation describes investigating risky OAuth apps using app details that include permissions and authorizing users.
  5. Review the grant event and later activity. Check available audit, sign-in, and activity records for when consent occurred and what happened afterward. Follow your tenant’s logging and retention capabilities; the detail available is provider- and configuration-specific.
  6. Check for policy findings or alerts. Microsoft documents policies that can notify administrators when apps meet configured criteria and allow permissions to be marked approved or banned. A policy finding is a reason to investigate under your rules, not proof by itself that a specific app is malicious.

Do not conclude that an app is safe because its name resembles a familiar service, or unsafe because it mentions AI. Validate the identity, owner, authorizing users, permissions, and activity together. An otherwise legitimate app can still have overbroad permissions; an unapproved app can use an innocuous name.

How to revoke an AI app’s access to Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or another cloud service

Use the identity provider or SaaS administration controls that issued or manage the grant. The correct action depends on the provider, your permissions, and the incident: a user may be able to remove their own connection, while blocking an app across a tenant generally requires an administrator control. Microsoft’s materials describe investigating and banning app access in Defender for Cloud Apps; other providers use their own controls and terminology.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm which app and grant you intend to remove. Match the app identity, permissions, users, and tenant records before acting. If more than one app has a similar name, verify the relevant identity details rather than choosing by display name alone.
  2. Use the provider’s current revoke, block, or ban control. Revoke the consent or grant where the provider offers that option. If the app is unapproved or confirmed risky, use the applicable administrator control to block or ban its access. Follow your organization’s approval and incident procedures.
  3. Consider the impact on other users. Determine whether the control affects one user or everyone in the tenant, and check whether other users authorized the same app. Organization-wide blocking can prevent legitimate work if the app serves an approved purpose for some users.
  4. Assess sessions, tokens, and credentials if compromise is suspected. Revoking app consent may not be the only response needed. The ACSC recommends promptly removing unnecessary access and revoking affected API keys, sessions, and tokens during incident response. Reset affected credentials as appropriate under your organization’s procedures.
  5. Look for persistence after containment. Review for new permissions, credentials, or other access changes that could remain after the original grant is removed. Use the provider’s incident tooling and audit records.
  6. Verify the action in records. Check relevant audit or sign-in records and confirm the app is no longer authorized or allowed under the intended scope. Ask the provider’s current documentation or your incident team what the selected control does to existing sessions.

Do not assume that revocation instantly ends every existing session or removes data an app already copied. The reviewed official guidance does not establish a universal revocation delay or a guarantee that previously accessed data is erased. Treat those as provider- and incident-specific questions, and use the provider’s current documentation and response tooling to assess them.

Investigate service identities and API credentials too

Some organizational integrations do not appear as a user-facing extension or consent screen. A service identity or API credential may provide access to systems on behalf of an application. Include these in the investigation when the suspected agent is used by a business process, automation, or centrally managed integration.

  1. Find the identity and its accountable owner. Use the organization’s identity, cloud, or application inventory to determine who owns the service identity and what process depends on it. If no owner or purpose can be established, treat that as an investigation finding.
  2. Inspect its assigned access and credentials. Compare granted permissions and credential purpose with the documented need. Look for unexpected changes or activity using the records available in the relevant system.
  3. Contain the credential through its issuing system. Revoke affected API keys or other credentials when they are unnecessary or implicated in compromise, while coordinating the change with the service owner so legitimate dependencies can be handled safely.
  4. Check for replacements or persistence. Review whether new permissions or credentials were added and whether activity continues after containment. Preserve relevant records as part of incident response.

The ACSC recommends maintaining an inventory of AI accounts, service identities, and credentials. Assigning an owner and recording why access exists makes an unfamiliar identity easier to assess and a compromised one easier to contain.

Choose the investigation and containment scope

Question What to establish Why it changes the response
Which access mechanism is involved? Extension, browser task, OAuth grant, service identity, or API credential Each route has different controls; removing only one may leave another active.
What can it reach? Page content, email, files, calendar data, or broader API permissions More sensitive or broad access can warrant more urgent review and tighter containment.
What evidence exists? Grant records, authorizing users, ownership details, audit trail, and observed activity These help distinguish an unfamiliar but approved tool from access that lacks approval or shows suspicious activity.
How wide is the exposure? One browser profile, one user, one app, several users, or a tenant-wide deployment The appropriate action may range from removing a local extension to administrator-led app blocking and broader incident response.
What can the provider actually do? Alert, restrict, revoke, block, and support post-incident verification Available controls and the effect of revocation vary by provider and configuration.

This framework reflects the access routes and controls described by Microsoft, Chrome, and the ACSC. It is not a universal detection score: the reviewed official sources do not establish a single indicator that proves an agent is unauthorized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevent the same access problem from returning

  • Maintain an inventory. Track AI accounts, service identities, credentials, and connected applications, with an accountable owner and a stated purpose.
  • Grant only the access required. Compare permissions with the actual job the app must perform and remove access when it is no longer needed.
  • Apply approval rules to high-risk OAuth apps. Use provider capabilities to alert administrators or manage app approval, and make clear who can authorize access.
  • Restrict browser extensions where organizational controls allow it. Keep approved extensions tied to an owner and purpose, and review changes to extension policy.
  • Monitor permission changes and unusual activity. Use available audit and sign-in records to identify new grants, unexpected users, or activity that does not fit the approved use.
  • Keep users in control of sensitive browser tasks. Monitor agents working in authenticated sessions and require appropriate oversight for consequential actions.
  • Know the response path before an incident. Identify who can revoke a grant, change browser policy, revoke credentials, preserve logs, and assess affected users.

Limits to keep in mind

Browser versions, extension policies, cloud-provider interfaces, token lifetimes, and revocation behavior vary. Use current documentation for the specific browser, identity provider, SaaS tenant, and incident-response configuration. There is no universal prevalence figure in the cited official guidance for unauthorized AI agents, and no universal revocation delay. A successful removal of access also does not establish that information previously accessed by an app has been deleted.
