Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
If you suspect a malicious Minecraft plugin, treat it as a security incident—not a routine plugin problem. Stop the Minecraft server, connected proxies, and related services; preserve the server and host logs; scan every server and proxy offline; remove every flagged or untrusted JAR; replace it only with a clean download from an official project source; rotate all credentials from a clean machine; and rebuild the host operating system if an attacker may have had operating-system access.
Why a suspicious plugin is a server incident
A Minecraft plugin JAR runs inside the server process and may have the same filesystem, network, and account permissions as that process. A plugin that was modified by an attacker can therefore do more than change gameplay. It may read configuration files, contact an external server, create accounts, alter startup files, or use the machine for unrelated malicious activity.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCompromise can arrive through a plugin publisher account, an unofficial mirror, a copied JAR, or a host that was already exposed. PaperMC has warned that malware distributed through compromised plugin-author accounts can be difficult to notice. The absence of a visible crash does not establish that a server is clean.
Investigate unusual resource use, unexplained outbound connections, unexpected commands, new operators, permission changes, unexplained restarts, or files that appeared at the time of a plugin installation. These signs are leads, not proof by themselves, so preserve evidence and corroborate them.

Contain the server before investigating
Stop every related process
Stop the Minecraft process first. Then stop connected proxies and any service that can restart the server automatically. Do not keep restarting the instance to see whether a symptom disappears; each restart can execute the same code again, change timestamps, rotate logs, or give a persistent payload another opportunity to run.
- Stop all affected Minecraft servers.
- Stop every connected proxy and wrapper service.
- Disable scheduled jobs, control-panel auto-restart rules, and service managers that would bring them back online.
- Restrict inbound and outbound network access while you preserve evidence.
Preserve a forensic copy
Before deleting anything, copy the complete server directory to offline storage. Include plugin JARs, configuration files, startup scripts, the current logs/latest.log, rotated logs, crash reports, and relevant operating-system and authentication logs. Keep the original copy unchanged and record when it was collected.
Make a second copy if possible, stored separately from the live host. Work on a copy when reviewing or extracting files. Record each server, proxy, plugin directory, JAR filename, file size, modification time, and checksum. A checksum gives you a reproducible way to compare a suspicious file with the official release later.
Map the whole Minecraft network
Do not investigate only the server that showed symptoms
List every Minecraft instance, staging server, test server, proxy, plugin directory, backup location, and host involved in the network. The same JAR may have been copied to more than one instance, and a proxy can be compromised even when the backend server appears normal. The Spigot incident procedure specifically calls for repeating the scan across every server and proxy in the network.
Build an inventory before removing files
For each location, record:
- Server or proxy name and host.
- Plugin directory path and every JAR present.
- Who installed or updated each plugin and when.
- File checksums and modification times.
- Recent restarts, permission changes, operator grants, and account creation.
- Outbound destinations visible in firewall, host, or network logs.
This inventory prevents a common failure: deleting the obvious malicious JAR on one server while leaving a copy on a proxy, a second instance, or a staging machine.
Scan the files offline
Using MCAntiMalware
MCAntiMalware is an optional third-party scanner documented for offline Minecraft plugin scanning. Its documented sequence is to stop the server, run the scanner, and inspect the generated report directory:
Recommended Free Tools
java -jar MCAntiMalware.jar
Review the resulting AntiMalware/logs directory and retain those reports with the other evidence. The scanner supports directory scanning and its version 15.16 listing, updated September 4, 2025, says it detects more than 1,000 malicious plugins. Those figures describe the scanner listing, not a guarantee that every current or custom threat will be detected.

Scan every relevant directory
Run the scan against each server and proxy plugin directory, not just the directory where a player reported a problem. Include archived plugin folders and copies used by test instances if they can later be restored. A clean result on one directory says nothing about another directory that was not scanned.
Understand what a plugin scanner can and cannot prove
A Minecraft-specific scanner can identify suspicious JAR patterns and known malicious plugins. It cannot prove that a host operating system is clean after an attacker obtained host access. It also cannot establish that an unlisted, newly modified, encrypted, or custom payload is safe. Use the scanner as one signal alongside provenance, checksums, code review where practical, logs, and observed behavior.
General endpoint antivirus, spyware-removal tools, intrusion-prevention controls, and firewalls are complementary safeguards. NIST describes these controls as useful but limited; none replaces a Minecraft-specific review of plugin provenance and the incident response steps in this guide.
Decide whether an alert is a real compromise
A generic antivirus name is not enough
Spigot has warned that a Windows Defender signature change caused many legitimate Java plugins to be reported as Trojan:Script/Wacatac.B!ml. A single generic antivirus alert is therefore a lead, not a final verdict.
"A recent Windows Defender signature change has caused very many plugins to be falsely reported as malware, usually as ‘Trojan:Script/Wacatac.B!ml’."
Increase confidence by finding at least one independent signal:
- The JAR checksum differs from the checksum of the official release.
- The file came from an unofficial mirror, private message, or re-upload rather than the project’s established source.
- MCAntiMalware or another independent scanner identifies the same file.
- Decompilation or code review shows unexpected downloaders, command execution, credential collection, or obfuscated network code.
- Logs and network records show behavior that began immediately after the plugin was installed or updated.
- The publisher account or release channel was reported as compromised.
Check provenance before trusting a replacement
Compare the suspicious JAR’s version, release date, file size, checksum, and package contents with the project’s official release. Do not assume that a filename or plugin icon proves authenticity. A malicious file can use the same name and version as a legitimate release.

Read logs and establish a timeline
Start with the current server log
PaperMC identifies logs/latest.log as the newest server log. Preserve it before cleanup, then correlate its timestamps with plugin downloads, server starts, permission changes, operator grants, player-account changes, and unusual commands. Keep rotated logs because the first suspicious event may no longer be in the newest file.
Review more than Minecraft output
Collect host authentication logs, control-panel activity, SSH or FTP access records, database logs, firewall events, scheduled-task records, and service-manager history. Look for logins from unfamiliar locations, newly created users, modified startup scripts, unexpected scheduled tasks, and outbound connections that do not match the server’s normal function.
Preserve scanner reports
Keep the files in AntiMalware/logs together with your timeline. Note which scanner version produced each report, which directory was scanned, and when the scan ran. This makes a later review reproducible and helps distinguish a file that was present before containment from one introduced afterward.
Remove malicious plugins safely
Do not delete a single file and immediately restart the server. Use this sequence:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Keep all affected servers and proxies offline.
- Confirm that the forensic copy and scanner reports are stored separately from the live host.
- Remove every flagged JAR and every JAR whose provenance cannot be established. Check all servers, proxies, staging folders, and plugin caches.
- Download clean replacements only from the plugin’s official project page or an established repository. PaperMC lists Hangar, Modrinth, and BukkitDev as plugin sources.
- Compare the replacement version and checksum with the publisher’s release information when available.
- Scan the clean plugin set again before starting any service.
- Review startup scripts and configuration files for changes; do not restore executable scripts from an unknown state.
- Keep the original suspicious JARs in evidence storage rather than overwriting them with replacement files.
If a plugin is not essential, leave it removed until you can verify its source and integrity. Reinstalling the same JAR from the same untrusted mirror defeats the containment step.
Rotate credentials and investigate persistence
Change credentials from a clean machine
Assume credentials may have been exposed if the malicious plugin could read configuration files or if the host itself may have been accessed. From a separate, trusted device, rotate:
- Control-panel credentials.
- SSH, FTP, and operating-system accounts.
- Database usernames, passwords, and connection secrets.
- RCON passwords.
- Minecraft operator and administrative accounts.
- Discord-bot tokens and other integration secrets.
- API keys, webhook secrets, and backup-storage credentials.
Invalidate sessions and tokens, remove accounts you did not create, and review newly granted privileges. Changing a password on the compromised host is weaker than changing it from a clean machine because malware may capture the replacement immediately.

Look for persistence
Deleting the original plugin may not remove scheduled tasks, modified service definitions, startup scripts, new users, SSH keys, web shells, or other files created while the attacker had access. Compare the host’s startup configuration with a known-good baseline and inspect files changed around the incident time.
When to rebuild the operating system
Reinstall the operating system from trusted media when you cannot confidently limit the incident to a plugin JAR, when host credentials may have been used, when system files or startup services changed, or when unexplained access continued after plugin removal. The Spigot incident guidance recommends backing up needed data and reinstalling the operating system after removing malicious JARs because deleting the original plugin may not remove its effects.
A rebuild is disruptive, but it gives you a more defensible clean starting point than trying to locate every possible persistence mechanism on a host that an attacker controlled. Before reinstalling, preserve the forensic copy and logs. Afterward:
- Install the operating system from trusted media.
- Apply current security updates before exposing the host to the internet.
- Create least-privilege service accounts rather than running the server with unrestricted administrative rights.
- Install the Minecraft server software and verified plugins from clean sources.
- Restore only inspected data and configuration.
- Rotate credentials again if any secret was present on the old host.
Use backups without restoring the compromise
Keep separate, usable backups
PaperMC describes functioning backups as essential. A backup is useful only if it is separate from the compromised host, recent enough for your recovery needs, and tested so you know it can actually be restored. Keep more than one recovery point when possible, and protect backup credentials from the server account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Restore data selectively
Restore world data and other inspected content first. Treat executable JARs, startup scripts, scheduled-task definitions, and unknown configuration files as untrusted until reviewed. A backup made after the attacker’s entry may preserve the same malicious plugin or persistence mechanism.
Record which backup was selected, what was restored, and what was deliberately excluded. This creates a clear boundary between vetted data and files that still require investigation.

Use least privilege
Run the service with only the filesystem and network permissions it needs. Separate server accounts from administrative accounts, restrict panel access, disable unused integrations, and limit RCON exposure. Least privilege reduces the damage if a future plugin is compromised.
Monitor after updates
PaperMC recommends watching server logs after updates. Continue checking logs/latest.log, rotated logs, authentication records, resource use, and outbound connections during the first hours and days after recovery. Pay particular attention immediately after adding or updating a plugin.
Threat context: unusual behavior can be hostile
Microsoft has documented MCCrash, a botnet targeting private Minecraft servers through server and Minecraft commands, and described Defender detections for associated malware. This is why unexplained command activity, abnormal resource consumption, or unexpected network behavior should be investigated as potentially hostile rather than dismissed as an ordinary game bug.
The presence of one unusual symptom does not identify a specific malware family. It does justify containment, evidence preservation, and a review of every server and proxy that could share the same credentials or plugin files.
Choose the response depth
Likely limited to one untrusted plugin
If the file is from an unofficial source, independent scanning confirms it, host logs show no unauthorized access, and the server runs with restricted permissions, you can still follow the full removal process: preserve evidence, remove every copy, replace it from an official source, rescan, rotate credentials, and monitor closely.
Scope uncertain
If you cannot establish when the file arrived, find unexplained account or startup changes, or share credentials across servers, treat the host as potentially compromised. Keep services offline, rotate secrets from a clean machine, inspect all instances and proxies, and favor an operating-system rebuild.
Host access suspected or confirmed
Preserve evidence, rebuild the operating system, patch it, reinstall the server software, restore vetted data, and recreate credentials. Do not rely on deleting a plugin as proof of recovery.
Common mistakes that prolong an incident
- Restarting repeatedly: this can execute the payload again and overwrite useful evidence.
- Scanning only the reported server: copies on proxies or other instances remain active.
- Trusting one antivirus label: Java plugins can be falsely flagged, so corroborate the alert.
- Deleting the JAR before copying it: you lose evidence needed for comparison and timeline analysis.
- Downloading a replacement from a mirror: the replacement may be the same malicious file or an altered copy.
- Restoring an entire backup blindly: executable files and scripts may contain the original compromise.
- Changing passwords on the suspect host: malware may capture the new credentials.
- Ignoring the operating system: a plugin scanner cannot certify a host that an attacker already controlled.
- Failing to watch after recovery: persistence or a second compromised component may become visible only after services resume.
A practical recovery record
Keep a written incident record containing the time each service was stopped, the servers and proxies scanned, JAR names and checksums, scanner versions and reports, suspicious log entries, credentials rotated, backups selected, files restored, and the time each service returned online. This record helps you prove what was checked, repeat the process if a second server shows symptoms, and identify gaps without relying on memory.
