Reliable QR Codes come from matching the encoded data, module size, printer, reader, and scanning conditions—not from applying one universal minimum size or contrast ratio. Start with the final payload, choose an appropriate error-correction level, preserve the four-module quiet zone, and test the finished code on its actual print material.

1. Finalize the payload before choosing the code size

A QR Code’s small squares are called modules. The number of modules depends on its version: Version 1 is 21 × 21 modules, and Version 40 is 177 × 177, with four additional modules per side at each version step. The required version depends on the amount and type of data and the selected error-correction level. A longer or less compact payload can therefore create a denser symbol that needs more physical space to keep its modules readable. DENSO WAVE’s version guidance explains the relationship between version and capacity.

Encode the destination or information you actually need, then generate the QR Code. Avoid adding unnecessary text or parameters: more data can mean more modules. Confirm that the decoded result is correct before moving on to layout.

2. Choose error correction for the use conditions

QR Codes offer four conventional error-correction levels. DENSO WAVE gives these approximate recovery figures as percentages of total codewords—not percentages of the visible symbol that can safely be covered or damaged. Its error-correction guidance describes the levels as follows:

Level Approximate codeword recovery Context
L 7% DENSO WAVE says it may suit cleaner environments with larger data amounts.
M 15% DENSO WAVE identifies it as the most commonly selected level.
Q 25% May suit harsher conditions, such as factory environments where codes can become dirty.
H 30% May suit harsher conditions, such as factory environments where codes can become dirty.

These are approximate figures from DENSO WAVE’s undated technical guidance, accessed in 2026, not independent performance measurements. Greater correction adds redundancy and can increase the amount of encoded data and the symbol’s size. Choose a level for the likely environment, then account for the resulting density when setting physical size.

Do not treat H as permission to place a logo over 30% of the code. Recovery depends on which codewords and locations are affected, and restoration is not assured in every damage condition. A logo, smear, or missing area can prevent reading or slow it, even when the selected level is higher.

3. Set module size for both the printer and the reader

There is no stand-alone minimum print size that guarantees a scan. The symbol’s version and module size interact with the printer’s ability to reproduce the modules and the reader’s ability to resolve them. DENSO WAVE recommends printing the code as large as the available area allows and says to consider the intended scanner when setting module size. Its guidance recommends at least four printer dots per module for stable operation; this is technical guidance, not a universal rule for every consumer printer or print process. See DENSO WAVE’s module-size guidance.

A very high-resolution printer can reproduce tiny modules that a particular phone or scanner cannot distinguish. For a public flyer, the intended reader is likely a phone camera; for workplace labels, a dedicated scanner may be the relevant device. Phone readability varies with the camera. DENSO WAVE’s FAQ also gives a common laser-printer example, but cautions that practical size depends on printer and reader capability. Do not turn an example into a guaranteed minimum. When calculating the physical footprint, include the quiet zone described in the next section. DENSO WAVE’s guidance and example tables show that achievable module dimensions differ by printing technology and resolution; a result from one process should not be assumed to apply to another.

4. Keep the four-module quiet zone clear

A standard QR Code needs an unprinted margin four modules wide on all sides. That space helps a reader distinguish the symbol from surrounding content. The full layout area is larger than the matrix itself: add eight modules to the matrix width and height to allow four on each edge. For example, DENSO WAVE’s worked area calculation uses a 50-character alphanumeric payload, Version 3, and a 0.254 mm module, then adds those eight modules across the total width. DENSO WAVE’s code-area guidance gives the margin specification and calculation.

5. Use crisp modules and strong contrast

Start with black on white

Black modules on a white background are the recommended default. Colored combinations may work, but their shade and optical behavior affect readability, so there is no universal numeric contrast ratio established in the cited guidance. DENSO WAVE recommends experimenting with a color treatment rather than assuming it will scan. The official FAQ warns that some combinations fail and identifies black on white as the basic treatment.

Account for the material and lighting

Transparent packaging can make nominally light areas reflect too little light. Glossy surfaces can introduce glare, and a flexible bag can skew the pattern. DENSO WAVE suggests placing a white background or label behind a code on transparent packaging and flattening a bag to reduce distortion. Test any treatment on the actual substrate and in representative lighting.

Do not distort or obscure the modules

Avoid stretching a raster image or resizing it in a way that changes the square geometry of its modules. DENSO WAVE warns that image-processing enlargement or reduction can distort modules even if the result still looks like a QR Code. Keep overlays and nearby artwork from blurring the boundaries between light and dark areas; these problems can make a code difficult or impossible to read. See DENSO WAVE’s troubleshooting guidance.

6. Test the final output in its real setting

Scanning depends on the print process, module size, reader resolution, colors, surface reflections, and distortion. DENSO WAVE’s cited guidance does not specify a universal consumer-phone test protocol, required device count, pass rate, or numeric acceptance threshold. The checks below are a practical workflow based on those documented dependencies, not a formal procedure prescribed by DENSO WAVE.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the exported file. Scan the final-size artwork, not only a design preview, and confirm that it decodes to the intended destination or data.
  2. Print a proof when the code will be printed. Use the intended print process and actual substrate; a screen preview cannot establish how the final material will reflect light or reproduce modules.
  3. Try the intended readers. Use the kind of phone camera or dedicated reader expected to scan the code. For workplace labels, reader resolution may be part of the module-size decision.
  4. Check representative conditions. Test at the expected viewing distance and under typical lighting, including likely glare, folds, or curvature where relevant.
  5. Change one variable at a time if scans fail. Increase physical size, restore the quiet zone, improve contrast, flatten or add a white backing to the substrate, or remove interfering artwork; then retest the changed output.

Are QR Codes governed by a standard?

DENSO WAVE says QR Code is standardized under ISO/IEC 18004 and JIS X 0510, and that the specifications are publicly available. Its FAQ says use does not require an application or usage fee when the standards are followed. The cited pages identify the standards but do not establish the currently applicable edition, so no edition number is specified here. DENSO WAVE’s FAQ.
