To make a wallpaper with two planets, choose a digital workflow for a quick, editable draft or draw the artwork by hand and digitize it. Start with the device you want to use it on, arrange the planets for that screen’s shape, then export separate phone and desktop crops rather than stretching one image to fit both.
Choose a digital or hand-drawn workflow
| Workflow | Good fit when | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Digital-first | You want to build a draft quickly and revise planet placement, colors, or crops. | Use a prompt-based wallpaper generator or compose the image in an editor. Canva describes text prompting, editing, and aspect-ratio selection on its wallpaper creation page. |
| Hand-drawn source art | You want the drawing process itself to shape the result or prefer making the planetary forms by hand. | Draw with pastels or another medium, then scan or photograph the art and finish it in a digital canvas. NASA/JPL’s Art & the Cosmic Connection activity suggests soft pastels or other drawing media. |
Neither approach is required for every project. You can also combine them—for example, draw the planets and use an editor to add a background and prepare device-specific versions.
Plan the composition and screen shape
Decide how the planets relate
Choose whether the pair sits side by side, overlaps, appears to orbit, or uses one large planet and one smaller companion. Keep both bodies recognizable at the size they will appear on screen. A quieter area around or beside the pair can give app icons or text less-busy space.
Start with the target device
Pick a phone or desktop as the first target before making the canvas. Screen proportions affect where the planets and open space can go. NASA’s wallpaper collection provides separate desktop and smartphone files; one example is 1920×1080 for desktop and 1080×1920 for mobile. Those are dimensions of example assets, not universal screen standards—use the resolution and shape appropriate to your device. See the NASA Scientific Visualization Studio wallpaper collection.

Create the planetary artwork
For a digital-first image
- Open a wallpaper generator or image editor and select a canvas matching your first target device.
- Describe the two planets, their relative sizes and positions, the background, and the mood you want. For example: “Two distinct planets, one large and ringed, one small and blue, floating in a deep indigo star field, with open space in the upper left.” Treat this as a starting point, not a guaranteed result.
- Generate or assemble a draft, then edit it until the planetary pair is clear. If your tool offers aspect-ratio selection or resizing, use it to prepare additional screen formats rather than distorting the image.
For hand-drawn source art
- Sketch the planet shapes and their relative positions before adding surface detail.
- Use pastels or another drawing medium to add color and texture. NASA/JPL’s activity connects shape, line, color, texture, and value with observing and interpreting planetary imagery. Its creators, artists and educators Monica and Tyler Aiello, write: “Using the elements of art—shape, line, color, texture, value—make sense of what you see, honing observation skills and inspiring questions.”
- Scan or photograph the finished drawing, then place it in a digital canvas for cropping, contrast adjustments, and export.
Refine the pair and make separate crops
Review the artwork at the size it will actually appear. If the planets blend into each other or the background, adjust their brightness, color, or edge contrast. Check where your device puts icons and text, and move important details away from those areas.
For a second device format, make a new crop and reposition the planets for that screen. A wide desktop canvas and a tall phone canvas usually need different composition choices; stretching one image can make the planets look unnaturally wide or narrow. Keep an editable original so you can revise the layout or palette later.

Review and export the wallpaper
- Check that both planets remain distinct and that the crop preserves the intended composition.
- Preview the image on the intended screen if possible, especially around icon areas.
- Export a separate file for each target device at a resolution appropriate to that screen.
- Keep the editable project or highest-quality source image in case you want to change the crop later.

NASA’s exoplanet coverage offers concepts for a fictional paired-planet setting, including double sunsets, lava seas, and a nearby planet appearing like a giant moon. Use these as visual prompts rather than as a tested wallpaper method: NASA’s article on planets with two suns.
