A useful study group feature helps online learners form or join a small group, agree on a shared goal, schedule a first session, and collaborate in ways that support learning—not just chat. Evidence from online higher education points to small groups and guided sessions as promising design choices, but it does not establish one universally best group size, matching method, or interface.

What a study group feature should help learners do

Design the feature around a concrete study task and the steps required to complete it together. Learners should be able to find or form a group, understand what the group is for, coordinate when and how to meet, and contribute to a shared activity.

That scope reflects the evidence: online collaboration commonly takes place through learning-management systems, discussion boards, shared writing tools, and synchronous tools. The right combination depends on the activity. A group reviewing practice problems may need a shared workspace and a live meeting; learners discussing a reading may benefit from an asynchronous discussion space.

A systematic review of 63 studies published from 2012 through 2021 found these tools and small-group formats recurring across online learner collaboration research. The review describes varied settings, rather than prescribing a single interface.

What research can—and cannot—tell you

Study-together groups and learner outcomes

A randomized controlled trial in a for-credit online course at a public four-year college offered students groups of three randomly selected classmates and guidance on scheduling and holding regular study sessions. The authors reported higher belonging among students offered a group: “Our findings indicate that students who were offered a study-together group reported a higher sense of belonging than those who were not.” Read the trial.

The reported academic improvements were concentrated among students with lower academic preparation or baseline motivation. Motivation increased among students who preferred passive interaction. The trial also identified a possible time-management downside for students with higher baseline motivation or a preference for active interaction. These results are specific to that course and intervention; they do not show that adding any study group feature will raise grades for all learners.

Group size and formation are open design choices

A case study discusses collaborative groups of three to five, including group composition, assignments, positive interdependence, and individual accountability. Members were responsible for work processes such as deciding when and how to meet. This is a useful design example, not proof that this size is optimal.

A 2025 survey study reported that 70.0% of respondents described small groups of two to four, 44.5% reported random assignment, and 28.2% reported self-selection. These are descriptive findings about reported practice, not recommended targets. Taken together, the sources show that both assigned and learner-formed groups are used; they do not establish a winning approach.

How to shape the feature

1. Make starting the first session straightforward

Give learners a clear sequence: choose or receive a group, set a shared study goal, coordinate a time, and begin the first session. Include practical guidance on how to hold regular meetings rather than assuming that group membership alone will lead to collaboration. Scheduling and regular-session guidance were part of the randomized trial’s intervention.

2. Treat small groups as a hypothesis to test

Groups of three to five are a defensible starting range drawn from reviewed examples, not a universal rule. Test the size in the intended course and product context. A useful evaluation should consider whether groups form successfully, whether members participate, and whether the group remains workable over time.

3. Make group formation understandable and flexible

Explain how groups are formed and what learners can do if a match does not work for them. Random assignment has been used in an intervention, while student self-selection also appears in reported practice. The evidence does not show that either method is best. Choose based on the course context and track who joins, who persists, and who benefits.

4. Match collaboration tools to a learning activity

Offer tools for a defined purpose rather than accumulating features. Depending on the task, that may mean a discussion space, shared writing, or synchronous meeting support. State what the group is expected to work on and how each tool supports that work.

5. Combine shared goals with individual contribution

Make the shared outcome visible while clarifying how each member can contribute. Collaborative-learning research highlights positive interdependence—the group needs members to work together—and individual accountability. Avoid a design where one learner can do all the work while others cannot tell what is expected of them.

6. Account for coordination barriers without forcing participation

Time constraints, technical problems, and anxiety, fear, or stress recur as challenges in online collaboration research. Reduce avoidable coordination steps and provide ways to participate that suit the activity. Treat these as design hypotheses to evaluate, not guaranteed fixes. Where the course permits, preserve learner control over participation; the trial’s subgroup findings suggest that a compulsory or overly prescriptive format may not suit everyone.

How to evaluate a study group feature

Compare plausible configurations in a pilot rather than treating any one arrangement as settled. The evaluation should connect design choices to both learning and practical experience.

  • Formation: Compare random assignment with learner choice where the course context allows, and observe joining and persistence.
  • Group size and duration: Test whether the chosen size and time together remain workable for the intended activity.
  • Activity and timing: Compare synchronous and asynchronous support against the actual task learners need to complete.
  • Participation and belonging: Check whether learners take part and feel included, rather than measuring only feature adoption.
  • Learning outcomes and autonomy: Examine course-relevant outcomes alongside coordination effort and learner control.
  • Practical friction: Record scheduling difficulties, technical issues, and signs that the format creates anxiety or unwanted time costs.

Decide in advance what would count as a workable result for the particular course. The existing studies describe options and context-specific findings; they do not supply a universal benchmark for success.

Questions to settle for the product context

The evidence summarized here does not establish privacy, safeguarding, accessibility, moderation, or jurisdiction-specific requirements for a particular product. Those decisions depend on who will use the feature, what data it collects, and where it will be deployed. Resolve them as part of product and course planning rather than assuming that a format tested in online higher education transfers unchanged to every learner population.
