The simplest current approach is to activate a WordPress block theme, open Appearance → Editor, and build the home page as a front-page template. Assemble the page from a header, hero, positioning statement, services, proof, contact section, and footer. Give each section an HTML anchor, then point the navigation to URLs such as #services and #contact. This produces a focused site without a separate page for every section, while leaving room to add full Pages later when the business needs them.

Decide whether a one-page site fits the business

A one-page website places the core information visitors need on one continuously scrolling home page. It works best when the business has one focused offer, a small service area, and information that changes infrequently. A visitor can understand the offer, see evidence, and make contact without opening several pages.

Use the format for a consultant, local trade, studio, coach, small agency, or single-product service whose main goal is a call, quote request, booking, or email. It is less suitable when every service requires a long explanation, when the company serves many locations, or when the site needs substantial legal, educational, or editorial content. In those cases, make the one-page home page the hub and add separate WordPress Pages for detailed services, locations, policies, a blog, or other evergreen information. WordPress Pages are designed for timeless, non-chronological content and can be added to the navigation.

Plan the information before opening WordPress

Write the content in the order a prospective customer asks questions. Each section should have one job and one next action.

Section Visitor question What to include
Header and brand Whose site is this, and where can I go? Logo or business name, short navigation, and the main call-to-action button.
Hero What do you do, for whom, and what should I do next? A specific headline, a short supporting sentence, and one action such as “Request a quote.”
About or positioning Why should I trust this business? A concise credibility statement, relevant experience, and location or service area.
Services Can this business solve my problem? Your principal services or packages, described by customer outcome rather than internal jargon.
Proof Has the business done this successfully? Selected work, substantiated testimonials, certifications, or client logos you are allowed to display.
Contact How do I start? Phone, email, service area, hours, and a form when web inquiries are useful.
Footer Where are the essential business and legal details? Business details, social links, copyright, and a privacy-policy link.

Keep the first viewport understandable without scrolling. Put the primary action in the header or hero, then repeat it after visitors have seen the services and proof. Do not give the page several competing “main” actions; secondary links can remain less prominent.

Arrange the domain, hosting, and content assets

Set up the domain and WordPress hosting before construction. You will need access to the WordPress administrator, the domain’s DNS or registrar account, and a reliable way to receive form notifications.

  • Prepare the final business name, phone number, email address, hours, service area, and privacy-policy URL.
  • Collect a logo, a small set of properly licensed photographs, project images, testimonials, and certification details.
  • Decide where inquiries should go and who will answer them. A form that no one monitors is worse than a clearly published email address.
  • Write useful alternative text for informative images. Mark purely decorative images as decorative in the media settings instead of giving them misleading descriptions.

Choose a block theme

A block theme uses blocks for all major parts of the site, including navigation menus, the header, content, and footer. With a block theme active, the Site Editor controls global styles, templates, template parts, and navigation from one interface.

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, open Appearance → Themes → Add New.
  2. Filter or browse the official Theme Directory, preview candidate themes, and activate the one whose structure suits the business.
  3. Before committing, inspect the theme at narrow and wide widths. Check whether headings, buttons, columns, menus, and images remain usable without custom code.

A preview proves that a theme can render its own sample content; it does not prove that it will produce a high-converting business page. Compare candidates on the controls that affect your actual work:

Comparison point Questions to ask
Site Editor support Can you edit the header, footer, templates, styles, and navigation as blocks?
Mobile layout controls Can columns stack, spacing remain readable, and buttons stay easy to tap?
Loading and assets Can you use correctly sized images and avoid visual components you do not need?
Accessibility Do keyboard focus, headings, contrast, and menu behavior remain understandable?
Forms and integrations Will the contact method and any booking or analytics tools fit the design?
Updates and support Is the theme maintained, and can you get help when a WordPress change affects it?
Migration Would your content remain recoverable if you change themes later?

Build the front page in the Site Editor

After activation, open Appearance → Editor. The Site Editor is available with block themes and exposes the site’s styles, templates, template parts, and navigation.

  1. Open the template area and create or edit the front-page template. A block-theme template is a collection of blocks that defines the document structure.
  2. Start with a full-width Group or Cover block for the hero. Add a Heading, Paragraph, and Buttons block. Use an image only when it clarifies the offer and does not make the text hard to read.
  3. Add separate Group blocks for the about, services, proof, contact, and footer areas. Columns can present a small set of services or contact details, but let them stack on small screens.
  4. Use consistent spacing and a single visual system: one display treatment for headings, a readable body size, a restrained color palette, and high-contrast buttons.
  5. Open the Styles panel and set typography, colors, link treatment, and spacing globally before making many local overrides. Global settings make later changes safer.

Header and brand

Insert the Site Logo or a text-based business name, a Navigation block, and the primary action. Keep the menu short enough to fit on a phone. The action label should describe the outcome, such as “Request a quote,” “Book a call,” or “Call now,” rather than a vague “Click here.”

Hero

Write a headline that combines the service and audience: for example, “Residential electrical repairs in Bristol.” Follow it with one sentence explaining the result, coverage, or differentiator. Place one prominent button below it. The hero should answer what the business does and who it serves without requiring a scroll.

About or positioning

Use a short, verifiable explanation of the business, its relevant experience, and the area it serves. Avoid a long history lesson. If the business operates from a physical location, state the location and service radius clearly.

Services

Show the main services or packages as separate headings with brief outcome-oriented descriptions. If prices vary, explain what determines the quote instead of displaying a misleading fixed figure. Link a detailed service to a separate Page when the explanation would make the one-page home page unwieldy.

Proof

Choose a few strong examples rather than an unfiltered gallery. Add captions that explain the result or scope of each project. Use testimonials only with permission and identify the speaker accurately. Display certifications and client logos only when the business can substantiate and legally use them.

Contact

Publish the phone number, an email link, service area, and opening hours in plain text so visitors are not forced to use the form. Add a form when capturing structured inquiries is important. State what happens after submission and how the information will be used.

Footer

Repeat essential business details, add appropriate social links, include the copyright notice, and link to the privacy policy. If the business has required legal or regulatory information, give it a separate Page and link to it here rather than making the footer unreadably long.

Connect navigation to sections with HTML anchors

Section links work when the navigation URL and the destination anchor match exactly.

  1. Select the section’s outer Group, Cover, or other containing block.
  2. In the block settings, open Advanced and enter an HTML Anchor value such as about, services, or contact. Enter the value without the hash.
  3. Select the Navigation block and edit each menu item. Set About to #about, Services to #services, and Contact to #contact.
  4. Save the template, open the published page in a new browser window, and activate every menu item. Test from the top, from the middle of the page, and after a refresh.

Use unique, lowercase anchors with no spaces. Put the anchor on the section’s outermost block so the heading and its content arrive together. If a menu item appears to do nothing, check spelling, confirm the anchor is saved on the block that actually renders, and remove any accidental second hash.

Keep navigation available while visitors scroll

For a long one-page site, a sticky header can prevent visitors from having to return to the top. Wrap the header in a Group block and set its position to Sticky when the theme exposes that option. Check that the header does not cover the section heading after an anchor jump, obscure content at narrow widths, or trap keyboard focus.

Smooth scrolling is optional. It can make short jumps feel more connected, but an animated scroll can be uncomfortable or disorienting. If you add it with custom CSS, preserve the reduced-motion condition:

@media (prefers-reduced-motion: no-preference) {
  html { scroll-behavior: smooth; }
}

Do not use motion to compensate for unclear navigation or weak section headings. Visitors should still understand the page when animation is disabled.

Add and verify a contact form

WordPress does not require a form for a one-page site. Add a forms plugin when the business needs consistent lead fields, spam controls, notifications, or a stored submission workflow. The form belongs in the contact section and should remain shorter than an application form.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install and activate a reputable forms plugin from the WordPress admin, then create a form with only the fields needed to qualify the inquiry.
  2. Include a clearly labelled name field, a reply-to email field, a message or project-details field, and any genuinely necessary service or timing choice.
  3. Configure the notification recipient, sender identity, reply-to address, confirmation message, and any anti-spam control provided by the plugin.
  4. Insert the plugin’s form block or shortcode into the contact Group. Keep a visible phone and email option beside it.
  5. Submit the form yourself on desktop and mobile. Confirm the on-screen confirmation, the notification email, the reply address, and the privacy wording. Check the spam folder if the notification does not arrive.

Never promise an immediate reply unless the business can meet that promise. Explain the expected response window in the confirmation text and provide an alternate contact method for urgent requests.

Make the design readable, fast, and accessible

  • Use a restrained palette with strong contrast between body text, backgrounds, and buttons.
  • Keep paragraphs short, use descriptive headings, and preserve a logical heading order.
  • Compress images and select dimensions close to their displayed size. A huge background photograph can make the first viewport slow without improving comprehension.
  • Give informative images useful alternative text; do not repeat nearby text or describe decorative flourishes.
  • Keep controls large enough to activate comfortably on a phone and make keyboard focus visibly different from the unfocused state.
  • Do not place important information only inside a hover effect, carousel, color cue, or animation.
  • Use real links for phone and email actions, such as tel:+441234567890 and mailto:hello@example.com, after replacing them with the business’s actual details.

One page does not mean one oversized image or a wall of text. Use whitespace to separate decisions, and make each section scannable at a glance.

Test the complete page before publishing

Preview at desktop and mobile widths, then perform a deliberate pass rather than relying on the editor preview alone.

  • Confirm that the first viewport identifies the business, audience, service area, and primary action.
  • Activate every navigation anchor and button, including the logo link and any secondary calls to action.
  • Check that a sticky header does not conceal headings or cover the form submit button.
  • Tap the phone and email links on a mobile device and verify that they open the expected apps.
  • Submit the form with valid data, missing required data, an invalid email, and a long message. Confirm useful error text and successful delivery.
  • Navigate the page with a keyboard only. Check focus order, visible focus, menu operation, and form labels.
  • Inspect contrast, image alternative text, heading order, and the privacy notice.
  • Review every factual claim, testimonial, certification, service-area statement, and business-hour entry with the owner.

These are release checks, not a claim of a particular performance score or conversion rate. A one-page layout has no universal benchmark; its quality depends on the clarity of the offer, the content, and the implementation.

Know when to expand beyond one page

Keep the focused home page, but add separate Pages when visitors need substantially more information than a scroll can present comfortably. Typical additions include:

  • Individual service explanations with processes, exclusions, or technical specifications.
  • Location pages for multiple towns or regions.
  • Pricing, terms, accessibility, privacy, cookie, or other legal information.
  • A portfolio or case-study library that needs its own navigation and search.
  • Articles, announcements, or other frequently changing posts.

Link these Pages from the relevant section and footer. Do not force every detail into the front-page template merely to preserve a one-page label.

Troubleshoot common problems

The Site Editor is missing

The Site Editor requires an active block theme. Recheck the theme under Appearance → Themes and activate a block theme before looking for Appearance → Editor.

An anchor link changes the URL but does not scroll

Verify that the destination block’s HTML Anchor is the same text as the menu URL without the leading hash. Make sure the anchor is not duplicated elsewhere and that the menu item was saved in the active Navigation block.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The anchor lands under the sticky header

Reduce the sticky header’s height, add spacing above the section content, or remove sticky positioning on narrow screens. Retest at the actual viewport where the problem occurs.

The form appears but messages do not arrive

Check the plugin’s notification recipient and reply-to settings, then submit a test with a real address. Inspect spam filtering and the site’s mail-delivery configuration. Keep the phone and email alternatives visible while delivery is being corrected.

The mobile layout is cramped

Set columns to stack, shorten button labels, reduce decorative imagery, and check padding at the narrowest supported width. A desktop arrangement that technically fits can still be difficult to tap or read.

Maintain the site after launch

Review contact details, hours, service areas, testimonials, certifications, and form recipients whenever the business changes. Keep the theme, WordPress core, and plugins updated through a controlled maintenance routine, and retain a current backup before significant changes. Periodically repeat the anchor, form, keyboard, and mobile checks because a theme or plugin update can alter navigation or layout behavior.

The durable pattern is straightforward: use a block theme and front-page template, give visitors one clear path from offer to proof to contact, and preserve a route to detailed Pages as the business grows. That keeps the first visit focused without trapping future content in an overstuffed single screen.
