Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
The reliable pattern is to run each independently deployable microservice as a Nomad task group, register every network endpoint with a health check, and have callers resolve the service through Nomad’s catalog or Consul instead of storing an allocation IP. Nomad places and reschedules the workloads; discovery updates when those placements change.
On Ubuntu, prepare reachable server and client hosts, install and validate Nomad with the current Ubuntu instructions, enable the Docker driver when you use Docker images, submit a jobspec, and verify deployment, allocation, catalog, and health status. Native Nomad discovery is sufficient for a simple or edge deployment. Choose Consul when you need richer catalog, DNS, health-routing, ACL, key-value, or service-mesh capabilities and are prepared to operate a separate Consul installation.

What you are deploying
Nomad is a declarative workload orchestrator for containers, binaries, and batch jobs. A jobspec is the contract you submit to a Nomad cluster: it describes the job, task groups, tasks, drivers, images or commands, resources, networking, services, checks, and rollout behavior. The scheduler turns that contract into allocations on eligible client nodes.
A microservice normally maps to one task or to a small task group. A Docker task specifies an image and resource limits; a group declares the named ports that tasks expose. Groups can be placed and scaled independently, which lets you release or add capacity to one service without redeploying every other service.

Dynamic placement makes discovery part of the design, not an optional add-on. An allocation can move to another client after a failure, an update, or a reschedule. Applications must therefore look up a current service address at runtime. Never put an allocation IP in a permanent environment variable or configuration file.
Ubuntu prerequisites and cluster layout
Use a supported reference environment
HashiCorp’s Countdash example uses Ubuntu 22.04 on AMD64. Treat that as a reference environment, not a promise that every future Ubuntu release or CPU architecture has identical package support. Before a production rollout, check the current Nomad and Docker driver support for the Ubuntu release and architecture you selected.
Provide reachable Nomad hosts
Use at least one Nomad server and one Nomad client for a small test. Production installations normally use multiple servers for resilient control-plane operation and multiple clients so a failed host does not remove all capacity. All servers and clients need network connectivity for the Nomad protocols, and clients need connectivity to the container registry and to any databases or external APIs used by the services. Configure host firewalls and routing from the current Nomad documentation rather than copying port values from an old tutorial.
Install the runtime and drivers
Install Nomad on every server and client by following HashiCorp’s current Ubuntu installation procedure. Repository keys, package names, supported releases, and service-unit details change over time, so do not hard-code an old installation command. Install Docker on clients that will run Docker tasks and verify that the Nomad client can use the Docker driver. If a client cannot load the driver, allocations using it will remain pending or fail immediately.
Check time, identity, and connectivity
- Use consistent time synchronization on all hosts; mismatched clocks make deployment and health events difficult to interpret.
- Give each Nomad agent a stable node identity and an address reachable by the other agents.
- Confirm that the CLI can reach a server before attempting an application deployment.
- Decide where images will come from and provide registry credentials through the supported Nomad mechanism rather than embedding credentials in an image tag or jobspec.
Nomad v1.3.3 or later appears as a prerequisite in one HashiCorp tutorial. That is a historical tutorial requirement, not a current universal release recommendation; use a currently supported Nomad version and keep the server, client, and CLI versions compatible.

Define a microservice jobspec
Start with one independently deployable group
Keep a service in its own group when it needs independent scaling, rollout, or failure isolation. A group’s count controls how many allocations Nomad should maintain. Tasks in the same group share the group’s network namespace and lifecycle, so place tightly coupled helper tasks there only when they must be scheduled together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDeclare the driver, image, resources, and port
The Docker driver configuration names the image and maps the task to a named group port. Resource values are workload-specific; the values in the example below are starting points for illustration, not capacity guarantees. Measure CPU and memory use in your environment and adjust them before production.
job "payments" {
datacenters = ["dc1"]
type = "service"
group "api" {
count = 2
network {
port "http" {
to = 8080
}
}
task "payments-api" {
driver = "docker"
config {
image = "registry.example/payments:1.4.0"
ports = ["http"]
}
resources {
cpu = 500
memory = 512
}
}
}
}
The image tag should identify an immutable build in a real release process. A floating tag can cause two allocations of the same job version to run different binaries, making failures and rollbacks harder to diagnose.
Register the endpoint with a health check
Add a service block for every endpoint that other workloads must discover. Use the named port, give the service a stable name, and expose a health check that represents readiness rather than merely process existence. An HTTP check should return success only after the service can perform the work that callers expect.
service {
name = "payments"
port = "http"
provider = "nomad"
check {
name = "payments-ready"
type = "http"
path = "/health/ready"
interval = "10s"
timeout = "2s"
}
}
Place this block inside the group that owns the endpoint. Use unique service names for distinct APIs, and use tags only for a deliberate routing or filtering scheme. A check that is too strict causes needless removal from discovery; one that is too permissive sends traffic to an instance that cannot serve requests.

A complete two-service Docker example
The following example demonstrates separate groups for an API and a frontend. The frontend discovers the API through a rendered environment file, while each group can be scaled independently.
job "shop" {
datacenters = ["dc1"]
type = "service"
group "api" {
count = 2
network {
port "http" {
to = 8080
}
}
service {
name = "shop-api"
port = "http"
provider = "nomad"
check {
name = "shop-api-ready"
type = "http"
path = "/health/ready"
interval = "10s"
timeout = "2s"
}
}
task "api" {
driver = "docker"
config {
image = "registry.example/shop-api:2026-10-15"
ports = ["http"]
}
resources {
cpu = 500
memory = 512
}
}
}
group "frontend" {
count = 2
network {
port "http" {
to = 3000
}
}
service {
name = "shop-frontend"
port = "http"
provider = "nomad"
check {
name = "shop-frontend-ready"
type = "http"
path = "/health/ready"
interval = "10s"
timeout = "2s"
}
}
template {
data = <<EOH
SHOP_API_URL="{{ with nomadService "shop-api" }}{{ range . }}http://{{ .Address }}:{{ .Port }}{{ end }}{{ end }}"
EOH
destination = "local/config.env"
env = true
change_mode = "restart"
}
task "frontend" {
driver = "docker"
config {
image = "registry.example/shop-frontend:2026-10-15"
ports = ["http"]
}
resources {
cpu = 500
memory = 512
}
}
}
}
The template uses Nomad’s nomadService function to obtain currently registered instances. The application must tolerate the result changing: an update can add an instance, a failed allocation can disappear, and a rescheduled allocation can receive a different address. For a client that supports a list of backends, render all returned instances instead of selecting only one.
For a production job, add the update and restart policies appropriate to the application, log settings, artifact or registry authentication, and any constraints or affinities required by your topology. Keep those choices explicit in the jobspec so a later operator can understand why a task was placed or restarted.
Validate and submit the job
- Save the specification, for example as
shop.nomad. - Run
nomad job validate shop.nomad. Fix syntax, unknown fields, driver errors, and invalid resource or port declarations before contacting the scheduler. - Run
nomad job plan shop.nomadand read the proposed changes. A plan shows whether Nomad will create, replace, or leave allocations in place. - Submit it with
nomad job run shop.nomad. Record the deployment ID and job version printed by the CLI. - Inspect the deployment with
nomad job status shop. Follow allocation details withnomad job status -verbose shopandnomad alloc status <allocation-id>. - Read task logs and events if an allocation is pending, lost, restarting, or unhealthy. The event message usually identifies a missing driver, unsatisfied constraint, image-pull failure, resource shortage, or failed check.
Do not treat a successful submission as proof that the service is usable. Submission proves that the server accepted the jobspec; readiness requires healthy allocations and a successful request through the service’s normal endpoint.

When native Nomad discovery is enough
Use the native provider when the services live in one Nomad environment, applications can consume addresses rendered by a Nomad template, and you do not need a separate cross-platform catalog. It removes another cluster to install, secure, upgrade, and monitor. It is a practical choice for a small Ubuntu deployment, an edge site, or a test environment.
When Consul is the better fit
For production workloads, HashiCorp recommends integrating Consul as the service-discovery solution. Consul is a separate product: install and configure Consul agents or a cluster beside Nomad clients rather than assuming Nomad installs it for you. The payoff is a richer catalog and DNS interface, health-based routing, and optional mesh, key-value, and ACL capabilities. Those capabilities also add operational responsibilities, including Consul quorum, agent connectivity, policies, certificates where applicable, and backup and upgrade planning.
Provider selection
Set provider = "nomad" for native registration. When the Nomad–Consul integration is configured, Consul is commonly the default provider; set provider = "consul" explicitly when you want the job’s intent to be unambiguous. Verify that the selected provider is available on every client that may run the group.
Connect dependencies without hard-coded IPs
Native Nomad templates
Use a template stanza and nomadService to render a dependency’s current address and port. The template can write an environment file, a framework configuration file, or an upstream list consumed by a proxy. Choose change_mode = "restart" when the process reads configuration only at startup; choose a reload action only when the application can safely reload changed endpoints.
Account for an empty result during startup. A dependent service may not yet have a healthy allocation, so the consuming application should retry with backoff rather than exit in a tight loop. If the application requires one endpoint to start, express that dependency in application-level readiness logic instead of assuming Nomad starts groups in a particular order.

Consul catalog and templates
With Consul, register the service through the Consul provider and resolve it from the Consul catalog, DNS, or a Consul template. Catalog lookups should be filtered by health so an allocation that fails its check is not returned to callers. The exact template and DNS wiring depends on how Consul agents are deployed; keep the agent address reachable from the task network and follow the current Consul integration guidance.
What changes after rescheduling
Nomad identifies a placement with an allocation ID, not a permanent server address. If a client fails, a deployment replaces an allocation, or a constraint moves a task, the new allocation can have a different IP and port. The service registration is updated after the new task passes its check, while the old instance is removed or marked unhealthy. A correctly configured catalog lookup therefore follows the workload; a baked-in IP does not.
Health checks and safe rollouts
Design a meaningful readiness endpoint
Expose a lightweight endpoint that verifies the process is ready to accept traffic. If readiness depends on a database migration or another service, decide whether that dependency belongs in the check or in a separate application circuit breaker. Keep the check interval and timeout long enough to tolerate normal Ubuntu and container scheduling jitter, but short enough to remove genuinely broken instances.
Observe health after every change
After a deployment, inspect both allocation events and the service catalog. A task can be running while its endpoint is failing. Confirm that the expected number of healthy instances is registered, that the port is reachable from a caller, and that the response is correct. Repeat those checks after deliberately replacing an allocation in a staging environment; this validates the rescheduling path rather than only the first placement.
Use update settings that match the service
Nomad update settings control how many allocations are replaced at once and how long Nomad waits for healthy progress. A frontend that can tolerate parallel replacement may use a faster rollout; a stateful or capacity-sensitive API may need a slower, canary-style change. Health checks should gate progression, and failed deployments should have an explicit recovery plan such as stopping the rollout or reverting to the last known-good job version. HashiCorp documents health-based routing and load-balancing behavior but does not prescribe one universal rollout policy.
Scale, expose, and operate the services
Scale the right boundary
Change the count on the group that needs capacity, then run a plan before applying it. Independent groups let you add frontend instances without multiplying a database adapter, or increase API capacity without restarting the frontend. Verify that the client pool has enough CPU, memory, and network capacity before raising counts.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep external exposure deliberate
A service registration makes an endpoint discoverable to other workloads; it does not automatically make it public on the Internet. Use an ingress or load-balancing layer appropriate to your network, and register only the internal ports that need discovery. Keep administrative and health endpoints restricted to the networks that require them.
Make failures diagnosable
- Give jobs, groups, tasks, and checks descriptive names so allocation events identify the failing component.
- Emit application logs to the destination supported by your Ubuntu operations workflow and retain enough history to correlate with deployment IDs.
- Track desired count, running count, healthy count, restart count, pending allocations, and image-pull errors.
- Record the jobspec version used for each release so a rollback is reproducible.
Troubleshoot common deployment failures
| Symptom | Likely causes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Allocation remains pending | No eligible client, insufficient CPU or memory, an unsatisfied constraint, or an unavailable driver. | Read allocation placement events, compare requested resources with client capacity, and confirm the Docker driver is loaded on candidate clients. |
| Task restarts repeatedly | Process exits, an invalid command, a missing environment variable, or a failed startup dependency. | Inspect task logs and restart events; run the image with the same command and required configuration in a controlled environment. |
| Image cannot be pulled | Wrong tag, registry connectivity, or missing authentication. | Verify the image reference from the client, registry credentials, and outbound network policy. |
| Service is running but absent from discovery | Missing service block, wrong provider, an unhealthy check, or Consul-agent connectivity failure. | Inspect the rendered job, check status, provider configuration, and the Nomad or Consul catalog. |
| Caller uses a stale address | An allocation IP was stored permanently or a template change was not applied. | Replace static configuration with a catalog lookup, confirm the template destination and change mode, and test after replacing an allocation. |
| Traffic reaches an unhealthy instance | The check tests only process existence, has an overly long interval, or routing ignores health state. | Make the readiness check reflect real service availability and ensure the lookup or load balancer filters unhealthy registrations. |
| Deployment never becomes healthy | Readiness takes longer than the rollout deadlines, capacity is too tight, or the new image is incompatible. | Read deployment events, compare health timing with update settings, increase capacity or adjust policy deliberately, and revert when the version is faulty. |
Production checklist for Ubuntu
- Confirm the Ubuntu release, CPU architecture, Nomad version, Docker version, and driver support are currently supported.
- Run Nomad servers and clients with stable identities, synchronized time, and the required firewall and routing rules.
- Validate the jobspec and review a plan before every change.
- Give every discoverable endpoint a stable service name, named port, and meaningful health check.
- Choose native discovery or Consul consciously; if using Consul, operate its agents or cluster as separate infrastructure.
- Resolve dependencies through
nomadService, the Nomad catalog, or the Consul catalog and DNS, never through a stored allocation IP. - Check catalog membership and health after initial deployment, scaling, upgrades, and forced rescheduling.
- Set rollout behavior, restart behavior, and rollback expectations for each service rather than adopting one policy blindly.
- Test registry authentication, log access, and recovery from a failed client before calling the deployment production-ready.
Conclusion
Deploying microservices with Nomad on Ubuntu is a matter of making placement, networking, discovery, and health explicit in the jobspec. Model each independently scalable service as a task group, use the Docker driver and named ports for container workloads, register health-checked endpoints, and submit through the validate–plan–run workflow. Native Nomad discovery keeps a small deployment simple; Consul is the stronger production option when its richer catalog, routing, mesh, key-value, and ACL features justify operating separate infrastructure. Once callers resolve services dynamically and health is verified after every reschedule, changing allocation placement becomes an operational event rather than an application outage.
