Deploy Claude securely by treating it as a data-flow and access-control project, not a simple desktop installation. Decide which service path will process prompts, where data may travel, how long it may be retained, how users authenticate, what gets logged, and who owns model and incident operations. Claude Code can execute locally while sending prompts and model outputs to a remote model service, so the workstation, network route, provider account, and any gateway all belong in the threat model.
The safest rollout starts with a limited pilot, representative but approved data, explicit retention and residency requirements, an allowlisted network path, centrally managed identity, tested logging, and a documented model-migration process.
What “secure deployment” must guarantee
Security depends on the guarantees your organization must make to customers, regulators, employees, and software owners. Write those requirements before choosing an access method.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesData handling
Inventory every data class a user or application could submit: source code, internal documents, credentials, customer records, personal data, and regulated information. Mark which classes are prohibited, which require masking, and which may be processed only under specific contractual terms.

- Retention: Define whether prompts, completions, attachments, telemetry, and support records may be stored, for how long, and in which system.
- Residency: Identify countries or cloud regions where processing and logs are permitted. A regional endpoint can help route traffic, but it does not by itself satisfy every residency or transfer obligation.
- Regulated use: Determine whether a business associate agreement or another sector-specific contract is required. A general product label is not proof of compliance.
- Separation: Decide whether development, testing, production, and highly sensitive workloads need separate accounts, projects, keys, or gateways.
Identity and accountability
Every request should be attributable to a person or workload identity. Decide how employees sign in, how service accounts are issued, how access is revoked, and which administrators can view usage or logs. Do not assume that a feature exists on every subscription: verify the current administration documentation and your contract for the exact plan.
Operational ownership
Assign owners for API keys, proxy and firewall rules, gateway configuration, log retention, cost limits, model upgrades, vulnerability response, and provider incidents. A deployment without named owners will eventually accumulate stale credentials and unreviewed data paths.
Choose the service path
Most enterprises choose among direct access to Anthropic’s service, a cloud platform integration, or an internally approved gateway. The right choice depends on which party must control routing, identity, logs, and contracts.

Direct access gives your application a straightforward path to the model service and leaves your team responsible for key management, network egress, application-level authorization, prompt filtering, and request logging. It can be appropriate when your organization already operates a mature secrets system and does not require a cloud-provider control plane for every invocation.
Confirm the account’s retention terms, eligibility for zero data retention, available administrative controls, supported models, and regional options before committing. These properties can vary by plan, model, geography, and contract.
Amazon Bedrock
Claude Code can be configured to use Amazon Bedrock. Bedrock documents regional endpoints and invocation logging for prompts and completions, allowing the organization to align requests and records with its cloud-region and logging design. You still need to verify which Claude models and features are available in the chosen region and account, and whether invocation logging is enabled, where it is stored, who can read it, and how long it is retained.
Google Vertex AI
Claude Code can also use Google Vertex AI. The cloud route may fit organizations that already enforce identity, network, and audit controls in that platform. Verify the current region, model identifiers, feature support, quota behavior, logging configuration, and contractual terms for the planned workload; availability is not uniform across regions or models.

An internal gateway
A gateway can place a controlled interface between users or applications and one or more model services. Anthropic describes gateway patterns that can provide centralized authentication, usage tracking, budgets, rate limits, request logging, and model routing.
The gateway becomes a security-sensitive system in its own right. Evaluate its code, deployment boundary, credential handling, administrator access, log protection, update process, and failure behavior. Anthropic explicitly states that it does not endorse, maintain, or audit LiteLLM; any third-party gateway must therefore undergo your own security and operational review.
Decision matrix
| Service path | Where controls are concentrated | Key questions before approval |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Anthropic API | Your application, identity system, network, and secrets platform | What retention and zero-data-retention terms apply to this account and model? How will keys, logs, and egress be controlled? |
| Amazon Bedrock | Your cloud account plus the model provider | Is the required regional endpoint available? Are invocation logs enabled and protected? Does the selected model support every required feature? |
| Google Vertex AI | Your Google Cloud controls plus the model provider | Is the required region and model available? Which identity, quota, and logging settings apply to this workload? |
| Approved gateway | Your gateway operations team, upstream provider, and cloud account | Who authenticates users, stores credentials, applies budgets, routes models, and protects request logs? What happens if the gateway is unavailable? |
Understand Claude Code’s network and storage behavior
Claude Code runs on the local machine, but that does not mean prompts or results remain local. Prompts, code context selected by the user or tool, and model outputs are sent to the configured model service. Network flow is therefore part of the enterprise threat model, even when execution, terminal access, and local file operations occur on a developer workstation.
Encrypt traffic in transit
Anthropic documents TLS encryption in transit. Validate certificate inspection, outbound firewall behavior, and any security appliance that terminates and re-encrypts TLS. If your organization performs inspection, document which component can see plaintext prompts and outputs and apply the same access and retention controls as the model service.
Control local session storage
Claude Code documentation describes configurable local session storage. Decide whether sessions may be written to developer machines, which directories are covered by endpoint protection, how long files remain, and how they are deleted during offboarding or incident response. Treat local transcripts as sensitive records: workstation backups, search indexing, crash reports, and synchronization tools may copy them.
Do not confuse local execution with data isolation
A local process can still disclose secrets through prompts, tool output, diagnostics, or model responses. Apply secret scanning, least-privilege file permissions, endpoint controls, and developer guidance before allowing repositories containing credentials or regulated data.
Configure corporate proxy and firewall boundaries
Anthropic documents corporate HTTP and HTTPS proxy support for Claude Code and identifies required destinations for the documented setup: api.anthropic.com, statsig.anthropic.com, and sentry.io. Your network team should create an explicit egress policy for these destinations and review whether telemetry is permitted under your privacy requirements.

- Build a test network segment. Place a pilot workstation or developer container behind the same proxy, DNS policy, TLS inspection, and firewall controls planned for production.
- Configure the approved HTTP/HTTPS proxy. Use the operating system or secure secret-management mechanism supported by your environment. Do not hard-code proxy credentials in shell scripts, repository files, container images, or CI logs.
- Allowlist required destinations. Permit the documented endpoints over the required ports, and record the rule owner, review date, and emergency rollback procedure.
- Test authentication and certificate handling. Verify that proxy authentication succeeds without exposing credentials and that certificate chains remain valid on managed workstations.
- Test failure modes. Confirm that blocked egress fails closed, produces an actionable diagnostic, and does not silently fall back to an unapproved direct route.
- Document unsupported patterns. Anthropic’s documentation says Claude Code does not support SOCKS proxies or
NO_PROXY. Test your infrastructure against those limitations instead of assuming a generic proxy setting will work.
Recheck endpoint requirements when the client changes. A firewall rule that is correct for one release may become incomplete after a telemetry or service update.
Set retention, residency, and contractual controls
Retention and zero data retention
Ask, in writing, what happens to prompts, completions, tool results, attachments, abuse-monitoring records, and operational telemetry. Determine whether zero data retention is available for the exact model, account, and service path. If you use a cloud platform or gateway, map retention independently at each layer: the client, proxy, gateway, cloud invocation log, provider service, backups, and support systems.
Regional routing
For Bedrock, regional endpoints are documented as a way to select geographic routing. Confirm the actual processing path, cross-region behavior, failover configuration, and log location for your workload. A region selection does not remove obligations concerning international transfers, subcontractors, backups, or administrator access.
Healthcare and other regulated workloads
Anthropic’s legal and compliance documentation describes a specific healthcare prerequisite for the covered Claude Code use: an executed business associate agreement and zero data retention. Confirm the scope, eligible products and models, configuration requirements, and account-level activation with Anthropic and your counsel before processing protected health information. Do not infer that the same terms automatically apply to every Claude product or cloud integration.
Contract review checklist
- Named entities and subprocessors that may process prompts or logs.
- Retention periods and deletion commitments for each data type.
- Regional processing and transfer mechanisms.
- Security-incident notification duties and timelines.
- Service-specific zero-data-retention eligibility.
- Audit, support-access, and termination-deletion provisions.
- Model and feature availability commitments, if any.
Establish identity, permissions, and administration
Use the organization’s currently supported identity and administration controls for the exact subscription and deployment. Current availability and configuration of SSO, SCIM, granular roles, and organization-wide audit events must be verified in the relevant Enterprise administration documentation and contract; do not present them as universal capabilities.
Recommended Free Tools
Workforce access
- Require named accounts for interactive use and remove shared credentials.
- Connect access to the corporate identity lifecycle so departures and role changes revoke access promptly.
- Separate administrators, developers, auditors, and billing operators according to least privilege.
- Use short-lived or tightly scoped credentials for automation where supported, and store secrets in an approved vault.
Claude Code permissions
Claude Code security documentation describes permission controls for local actions. Configure those controls to limit file access, shell commands, network actions, and tools to what the project requires. Review permission changes through code review or an equivalent change process. Local permission prompts do not replace centrally managed workforce identity, endpoint policy, or repository access controls.
Gateway identity
If a gateway is used, require it to authenticate the caller before forwarding a request. Bind each request to a user or workload identity, enforce project-level budgets and rate limits, and prevent callers from bypassing policy by connecting directly to an upstream provider. Protect gateway administrator credentials separately from application keys.

Design logging and audit evidence
Logging should answer who sent what type of request, through which path, using which model and identity, and what administrative action occurred—without creating an uncontrolled copy of sensitive content.
Define the minimum useful record
- Timestamp with a documented time source.
- User, service account, project, and gateway or cloud account identity.
- Model identifier, region or endpoint, request status, latency, token or quota metadata where available, and cost data.
- Policy decisions, denied actions, key changes, permission changes, and administrator events.
- Correlation identifiers that connect application, gateway, cloud, and incident records.
Decide separately whether prompt and completion bodies are necessary. If they are retained, classify them, encrypt them, restrict access, set a deletion schedule, and prevent them from appearing in debug logs or support tickets.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Bedrock invocation logging
Bedrock documentation describes invocation logging for prompts and completions. Confirm whether your account has enabled it, which destination receives the records, who can query them, and whether retention matches your policy. Test redaction and access alerts before production traffic begins.
Gateway logs
A gateway may centralize usage and request logs, but centralization increases impact if the gateway is compromised. Separate operational metrics from content logs, restrict administrator access, monitor exports, and test deletion from primary storage and backups.
Pilot before broad rollout
Use a staged deployment with approved test data that resembles real workflows without exposing live secrets or regulated records.
- Define success criteria. Include allowed data classes, latency, model features, cost limits, retention behavior, regional route, and incident contacts.
- Exercise representative workflows. Test code review, document analysis, tool use, CI automation, and failure recovery if those are in scope.
- Inspect outbound traffic. Verify that requests use the approved proxy or cloud endpoint and that no direct fallback exists.
- Inspect local artifacts. Locate session files, shell history, temporary files, crash reports, editor caches, and backups that may contain prompts or outputs.
- Test authorization. Attempt access with revoked users, wrong project identities, expired keys, and insufficient roles. Confirm denial and alerting.
- Validate logs. Confirm required events arrive, sensitive content is handled as designed, timestamps correlate, and retention deletion works.
- Run incident drills. Revoke a key, block an endpoint, disable a gateway route, and investigate a simulated data disclosure.
- Approve a narrow production scope. Record prohibited data, approved repositories, supported models, operating owners, and review dates.
Manage model changes and service retirement
Model identifiers and availability change. Maintain an inventory of every model ID used by applications, scripts, gateways, and developer tooling. Track announced retirement dates and identify owners for each dependency.

Common failure modes and fixes
“The code stays on the laptop, so it is isolated.”
Cause: Local execution is confused with local processing. Fix: Document the outbound path and treat prompts, tool results, and completions as data leaving the workstation.
Proxy configuration works for a browser but not Claude Code
Cause: The environment depends on SOCKS or NO_PROXY, which the documented Claude Code setup does not support. Fix: Use the supported HTTP/HTTPS proxy pattern, test certificate and authentication behavior, and remove assumptions copied from unrelated tools.
Credentials appear in scripts or logs
Cause: Proxy or API secrets were embedded for convenience. Fix: Move them to approved environment injection or a secret store, rotate exposed credentials, and add secret scanning to repositories and CI.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Regional routing is assumed but not demonstrated
Cause: Selecting a cloud region is treated as proof that every processing and logging step remains there. Fix: Trace the request, failover, telemetry, support, and backup paths and obtain contractual confirmation.
Logs contain more sensitive content than intended
Cause: Debug, invocation, gateway, or support logging captured full prompts and completions. Fix: Minimize content logging, redact where possible, restrict access, shorten retention, and verify deletion in a controlled test.
A gateway becomes an unreviewed single point of failure
Cause: Central policy was added without high-availability, credential, or update ownership. Fix: Define gateway operators, backups, health checks, emergency bypass policy, patching, and a tested outage procedure.
Production readiness checklist
- Approved data classification and prohibited-input rules.
- Documented service path, provider, region, and failover behavior.
- Verified retention and zero-data-retention terms for the exact model and account.
- Completed contract and, where applicable, healthcare BAA review.
- HTTP/HTTPS proxy and firewall rules tested; unsupported SOCKS and
NO_PROXYassumptions removed. - Secrets stored in an approved vault with rotation and revocation procedures.
- Named identities, least-privilege roles, and offboarding tests.
- Local session-storage policy applied to managed workstations and backups.
- Logging design approved, access-controlled, monitored, and deletion-tested.
- Gateway independently assessed if one is deployed.
- Model inventory, evaluation suite, deprecation monitoring, and migration runbook.
- Incident contacts and exercises covering key compromise, data disclosure, provider outage, and misrouting.
Bottom line
Deploy Claude securely by controlling the complete path from user or application to model service and back: classify data, choose a route that satisfies residency and contract requirements, enforce the supported proxy boundary, manage identity centrally, minimize and protect logs, test local session storage, and plan for model change. Bedrock or Vertex AI may align with existing cloud controls, while a gateway can centralize policy; neither removes the need to verify retention, regional behavior, feature support, and contractual scope for the exact workload.
