Put Nginx on the public interface and bind CherryPy to a private loopback port. Nginx accepts the browser request, serves static files when configured to do so, forwards dynamic requests to CherryPy with proxy_pass, and supplies headers that preserve the public host and originating client address.
A reliable deployment sequence is: make CherryPy answer on 127.0.0.1:8080, verify it locally, define that listener in an Nginx upstream, configure the public server block, enable CherryPy’s proxy tool, then test local and public routes separately. You can add a second CherryPy listener for simple load distribution, or use uWSGI as an alternative WSGI process model.

How the request path works
The finished arrangement has three logical layers:
- Client: connects to the public hostname and port exposed by Nginx.
- Nginx: terminates the public HTTP connection, optionally serves
/static/, and proxies application routes. - CherryPy: listens on a private endpoint such as
127.0.0.1:8080; it is not directly reachable from the internet.
For a dynamic request, Nginx sends an HTTP request to the CherryPy listener. The forwarded Host, X-Real-IP, X-Forwarded-For, and X-Forwarded-Host headers let the application reconstruct the original request context. The proxy tool in CherryPy then uses that information when it builds URLs and reports the client address.
This separation also makes failures easier to locate. A failed loopback request is an application or process problem; a successful loopback request followed by a public 502 usually points to the Nginx endpoint, protocol, or service configuration. A successful dynamic request with a missing stylesheet is generally a static-file mapping issue rather than a CherryPy routing issue.

Choose a CherryPy process model first
Nginx can proxy to CherryPy’s own HTTP server, which CherryPy documents as production-ready, or to a uWSGI process that exposes the application over HTTP. Both approaches work; the important rule is that Nginx’s upstream protocol and endpoint must match the process actually listening there.
| Model | What listens locally | Nginx target | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct CherryPy | CherryPy HTTP server on 127.0.0.1:8080 |
proxy_pass http://apps; |
You want the simplest supported deployment and CherryPy’s built-in server is sufficient. |
| uWSGI with HTTP protocol | uWSGI on 127.0.0.1:8080, started with --protocol=http |
The same HTTP proxy_pass style |
You need a WSGI process model while retaining an HTTP-speaking local endpoint. |
Do not start both models on the same port. Select one owner for each listener, and make every Nginx upstream entry point to an endpoint that is actually running. Decide this before writing the proxy block: changing the process model later can change the protocol Nginx must speak even when the port number stays the same.

Prepare the CherryPy application
Bind to a private listener
Set global server options before starting the application. The following example binds CherryPy to loopback port 8080 and enables proxy awareness for a public HTTP hostname:
import cherrypy
class Root:
@cherrypy.expose
def index(self):
return "Hello from CherryPy"
cherrypy.config.update({
"server.socket_host": "127.0.0.1",
"server.socket_port": 8080,
"tools.proxy.on": True,
"tools.proxy.base": "http://www.example.com",
})
cherrypy.quickstart(Root())
server.socket_port is a global server setting, not an application-specific option. Binding to 127.0.0.1 keeps the application private when Nginx runs on the same host. If your public site uses HTTPS, set the proxy base to the public HTTPS URL instead, so generated absolute links use the correct scheme.
Keep the listener, public hostname, and proxy base documented together. A port change in CherryPy requires the matching change in every Nginx upstream entry. A hostname change requires both the Nginx server_name and the value used by tools.proxy.base to be reviewed, rather than assuming that DNS alone updates application-generated URLs.
Why the proxy tool matters
Without proxy handling, CherryPy may see Nginx’s address as the client and may construct links from the internal listener rather than the public hostname. tools.proxy.on tells CherryPy to interpret the forwarded request metadata, while tools.proxy.base defines the externally visible base URL. The base should correspond to the hostname in Nginx’s server_name and to the scheme users actually access.

curl -i http://127.0.0.1:8080/
You should receive an HTTP response from the application. If this request fails, inspect the CherryPy process and its logs before changing Nginx. Typical causes are a syntax error in the application, a different socket host or port than expected, or another process already occupying the port.
When using two instances, repeat the direct request against 127.0.0.1:8081 before putting both addresses in the upstream. This proves that each process is independently usable and prevents Nginx from masking a dead or misbound second process.
Configure Nginx as the reverse proxy
Use an upstream block
An upstream names the local CherryPy endpoints. One server is enough for a single instance; listing two enables Nginx’s basic load distribution:
upstream apps {
server 127.0.0.1:8080;
server 127.0.0.1:8081;
}
server {
listen 80;
server_name www.example.com;
location ^~ /static/ {
root /app/static/;
}
location / {
proxy_pass http://apps;
proxy_redirect off;
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Host $server_name;
}
}
Save the adapted server configuration in the directory used by your installation; the CherryPy deployment example places it under /etc/nginx/conf.d/ on Ubuntu. Replace the hostname, filesystem path, and ports with values from your host. The proxy_pass http://apps; line sends requests to the named upstream. Leaving the URI portion off preserves the incoming request path; changing it to a URI with a trailing slash changes how Nginx rewrites that path, so do not add one casually.
The upstream name is local configuration, not a DNS name that clients must resolve. Nginx resolves the listed addresses from the configuration and chooses among them when handling requests. Keep the public hostname in server_name; keep private listener addresses in upstream. Mixing those roles makes it harder to tell whether a failure is DNS, virtual-host selection, or application connectivity.
Understand each forwarded header
Host $hostpasses the hostname requested by the client instead of the private upstream name.X-Real-IP $remote_addrcarries the address Nginx saw on the client connection.X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_forappends the current address to an existing forwarding chain, preserving multiple proxy hops.X-Forwarded-Host $server_nametells the application which public server block handled the request.
CherryPy’s proxy tool reads this forwarded context. If another trusted proxy is placed in front of Nginx, define your trust model before accepting forwarded-address headers; otherwise an untrusted client could supply misleading values.
Check these values in application logs after making a public request. The host should be the public name, and the client address should represent the connecting user or the trusted upstream hop your design specifies. Seeing only the loopback address is a useful diagnostic signal that the headers or proxy tool are incomplete.
Serve static files directly from Nginx
The /static/ location in the example bypasses CherryPy for matching files. This reduces application work and lets Nginx handle those responses directly. The documented example uses:

location ^~ /static/ {
root /app/static/;
}
Treat /app/static/ as an example, not a universal directory. Nginx combines a root with the request URI, so verify that a request such as /static/site.css maps to the file location you intend. Check directory and file permissions for the Nginx worker account, and test a real asset independently of a dynamic route. If your filesystem layout does not match the URL prefix, adjust the location or path mapping rather than silently returning 404 responses.
The ^~ prefix gives this location priority over regular-expression locations, which helps keep known static paths from falling through to the application block. Keep the static URL convention stable across every application instance; otherwise a request served by Nginx can refer to an asset layout that differs from the files expected by CherryPy-generated pages.

Test and reload Nginx safely
- Check the configuration with the Nginx configuration-test command provided by your platform, commonly
nginx -t. Fix every reported error before reloading. - Reload the service using your operating system’s service manager so existing connections can finish while the new configuration is adopted.
- Request the public hostname, for example
curl -i http://www.example.com/, and compare the result with the direct loopback request. - Request a known static file under
/static/separately from a dynamic URL. - Inspect CherryPy logs for the forwarded host and client address. A value of Nginx’s loopback address where the client address is expected usually indicates that proxy headers or CherryPy’s proxy tool are missing or misconfigured.
When DNS is not ready, test with a local hosts entry or a request whose Host header matches the configured server name. Make sure the request reaches the intended Nginx server block rather than a default site.
Perform the syntax test after every edit, not only after the initial installation. A valid test followed by a reload gives you a clear configuration boundary: if the direct request still works but the public request changes afterward, inspect the newly loaded server block and its upstream rather than restarting CherryPy unnecessarily.
Add a second CherryPy instance for simple scale-out
To run two direct CherryPy processes, give them different ports, such as 8080 and 8081, and include both in the upstream:
upstream apps {
server 127.0.0.1:8080;
server 127.0.0.1:8081;
}
Nginx then distributes requests across the listed servers. Each instance must have the same application code and compatible configuration. If the application stores session or upload state only in local memory or on one instance’s disk, requests routed to the other instance may not see it; design shared state separately instead of assuming that load distribution provides it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor an operational check, stop one instance temporarily and make a request through the public hostname. Confirm that the observed behavior matches your availability expectations, then restart the instance and repeat the local health check. The basic upstream declaration is not a substitute for application-specific health checks or failover policy.
Scaling the upstream does not remove the need to supervise each process. Record which port belongs to each instance, start them with the same environment and code revision, and verify both after a deployment. If only one instance is healthy, the public result may appear intermittent because successive requests can reach different endpoints.

Use uWSGI instead of CherryPy’s HTTP server
uWSGI is optional. If you choose it, expose the WSGI callable over a local HTTP endpoint and let Nginx continue to use an HTTP proxy_pass. A minimal module can look like this:
import cherrypy
class Root:
@cherrypy.expose
def index(self):
return "Hello from CherryPy"
def make_app():
return cherrypy.Application(Root())
wsgiapp = make_app()
cherrypy.config.update({
"tools.proxy.on": True,
"tools.proxy.base": "http://www.example.com",
})
cherrypy.engine.start()
In this model, disable CherryPy’s built-in HTTP server and let uWSGI own the socket. The documented command is:
uwsgi --socket 127.0.0.1:8080 --protocol=http --wsgi-file mymod.py --callable wsgiapp
The --protocol=http option is significant: it makes the local endpoint speak HTTP, which matches proxy_pass http://apps;. If your uWSGI invocation exposes a different protocol or port, change the Nginx configuration to match that actual endpoint rather than copying the direct-CherryPy setup unchanged.
A common mistake is to change the application runner without changing the ownership of the socket. Stop the direct CherryPy server before launching uWSGI, verify the local endpoint with curl, and only then reload Nginx. This keeps a process-model change from being confused with a proxy configuration error.
Handle HTTPS, redirects, and other edge features deliberately
The baseline shown here listens on port 80. In a real public deployment, you may terminate TLS at Nginx and redirect plain HTTP to HTTPS. When you do, set CherryPy’s proxy base to the HTTPS public URL and ensure the forwarded scheme information used by your application reflects the external connection. Exact TLS, redirect, timeout, buffering, and access-control values depend on the application; there is no universal safe value supplied by the baseline.
Configure those features only after the plain HTTP path works. Otherwise a redirect loop, an incorrect absolute URL, or an overly short timeout can obscure a simpler upstream failure.
Test both the redirect and the final secure URL. A browser may hide an intermediate redirect, while curl -i exposes the status and Location header so you can check that the public hostname and scheme are correct. If CherryPy generates an HTTP link after TLS termination, revisit its proxy base and the scheme information passed through the edge.
WebSockets need an additional upgrade path
CherryPy’s advanced documentation identifies the external ws4py library for WebSocket support. A normal HTTP proxy configuration is not automatically a complete WebSocket deployment. If the application uses WebSockets, configure Nginx’s HTTP-to-WebSocket upgrade handling, confirm that the selected upstream process supports the connection lifecycle, and test a real WebSocket handshake end to end. Keep this separate from ordinary HTTP troubleshooting: a page request can succeed while an upgrade request fails.

Test the handshake through the public hostname, not only against the loopback listener. Verify that the connection remains open for the period your application expects and that requests are sent to an instance capable of maintaining the session. A static-file success or ordinary page response does not prove that upgrade headers and long-lived connections are configured correctly.
Troubleshoot by symptom

| Only one of two instances responds | The second process is stopped, bound elsewhere, or blocked by permissions | Test both loopback ports directly and inspect each process log before investigating Nginx balancing. |
| WebSocket handshake fails while pages work | Missing upgrade directives or unsupported upstream handling | Add explicit WebSocket upgrade configuration and test the handshake separately from HTTP. |
Deployment checklist
- CherryPy listens on the intended private address and port.
- A direct loopback request returns the expected application response.
- The Nginx
upstreamlists only live, protocol-compatible endpoints. - The public
server_namematches the hostname users request. Host,X-Real-IP,X-Forwarded-For, andX-Forwarded-Hostare forwarded.- CherryPy’s proxy tool is enabled when public URL and client metadata are required.
- Static files are tested separately, with verified path mapping and permissions.
- Nginx configuration passes its syntax test before every reload.
- Each configured upstream instance has been tested directly and through the public hostname.
- HTTPS, WebSocket upgrades, timeouts, buffering, and access controls have been added only for requirements the application actually has.
What to remember
Nginx is the public edge; CherryPy remains on a private application endpoint. The essential connection is an Nginx upstream plus proxy_pass, with forwarded host and address headers and CherryPy’s proxy tool enabled. Direct CherryPy hosting is a supported baseline, while uWSGI is an optional WSGI process layer. Once the single-instance path is verified, the same upstream pattern can include additional CherryPy listeners and Nginx can serve static assets without involving the application.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should proxy_pass point to for CherryPy?
Point it to the Nginx upstream name, such as proxy_pass http://apps;, where apps lists the live CherryPy HTTP listeners. The endpoint and protocol must match the process actually running.
How do I preserve the real client IP?
Set X-Real-IP and X-Forwarded-For in the proxy location, forward the host headers, and enable CherryPy’s tools.proxy. Trust forwarded values only from proxies you control.
Do I need uWSGI to run CherryPy behind Nginx?
No. CherryPy’s own HTTP server is a supported production baseline. uWSGI is optional when you want a WSGI process model; run it with an HTTP protocol endpoint if Nginx will continue using proxy_pass http://....
Why does a static file return 404 while the page loads?
Check how Nginx combines the /static/ URI with the configured root, then verify the directory layout, filename, and Nginx worker permissions. Test the asset URL separately.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I put two CherryPy instances in one upstream?
Yes. List distinct listeners such as ports 8080 and 8081. Both instances need compatible code and configuration, and state stored only in one process or on one disk will not automatically be available to the other.
What changes are needed for WebSockets?
CherryPy WebSocket support uses the external ws4py library. Configure Nginx’s HTTP-to-WebSocket upgrade path and test a real handshake separately from ordinary HTTP requests.
The Bottom Line
Bind CherryPy privately, verify it directly, then proxy it through Nginx with a matching upstream, forwarded request headers, and CherryPy’s proxy tool. Add static serving, additional instances, uWSGI, TLS, or WebSocket handling only after the basic path is working and each extra requirement has been tested.
