OctoDNS lets you manage DNS as code: records are stored in version-controlled YAML, reviewed like software changes, and synchronized to one or more DNS providers from a Linux VPS. The dependable workflow is validate, plan, review, apply, and verify. Start with an isolated Python environment and a disposable zone, because OctoDNS treats the managed zone as authoritative for the records you declare and can delete records that are absent from the desired configuration.
What OctoDNS does and why the VPS matters
OctoDNS is an open-source toolset for defining DNS records in files and publishing them through provider APIs. The project describes it as “In the vein of infrastructure as code octoDNS provides a set of tools & patterns that make it easy to manage your DNS across multiple providers.” Your Linux VPS is the execution host: it stores a checked-out configuration repository, runs OctoDNS commands, reads provider credentials from the environment, and contacts the configured DNS APIs.

This model separates the desired state from any single provider dashboard. A Git commit or pull request records who changed a name, address, TTL, or routing rule. Multiple targets can receive the same source zone, which is useful for migrations, secondary copies, or multi-provider designs. It does not remove provider-specific constraints: supported record types, DNSSEC behavior, routing features, API limits, delegation, and propagation remain dependent on the provider and zone.
The documentation currently identifies the 1.22.0 release line. That version is time-sensitive; confirm the installed version and the selected provider package’s requirements before a production rollout.

Plan the deployment before installing anything
Choose a safe first zone
Use a fake or disposable domain for the first synchronization. OctoDNS assumes ownership of a zone that points at a target provider. If the source does not contain a record that exists at the target, the generated plan can include a deletion. A test zone lets you inspect that behavior without risking mail, web, authentication, or verification records for a live domain.
Decide where configuration and secrets live
- Keep YAML and the OctoDNS configuration in a Git repository with pull-request review and a rollback path.
- Keep API keys, secret keys, and tokens outside the repository. Use environment variables or a secret manager to inject them into the VPS process.
- Restrict the VPS account and provider credentials to the zones and operations required. Prefer the provider’s least-privilege API role.
- Schedule periodic plans in CI or a system timer so provider-side drift is detected even when nobody is editing the repository.
Map the execution flow
During a sync, OctoDNS populates source zones, runs configured processors, creates a plan for each target, and performs safety validation before applying it unless a force option is used. Understanding that sequence helps you decide where to add review gates: validation before provider access, plan review before changes, and post-apply DNS checks.

Run these commands as the account that will execute synchronization. The official basic setup uses a Python virtual environment so OctoDNS and its provider dependencies do not interfere with the operating system’s Python packages.
- Create a working directory and enter it.
mkdir -p ~/octodns cd ~/octodns - Create and activate a virtual environment.
python3 -m venv env source env/bin/activateIf
python3 -m venvfails on a minimal Ubuntu installation, install the distribution package that supplies Python’s venv module, then rerun the command. Keep the activation step in every interactive shell, or call the virtual environment’s binaries by full path from automation. - Install OctoDNS and the selected provider integration.
pip install octodns <provider-specific-requirements>Replace the angle-bracketed portion with the package named by the provider integration you selected. Provider packages and API requirements change independently of OctoDNS, so check the provider’s current documentation before pinning versions for production.
- Record the installed versions.
octodns-versionsSave the output with your deployment notes. Pin known-good package versions in your environment-management process after testing; do not assume that a provider plugin released later supports every record feature in your zone.

OctoDNS configuration has two required concepts: providers and zones. A provider entry names a class and its options. A zone entry identifies the DNS name, its source providers, and the target providers that receive synchronized records.

- route53Save this as config/octodns.yaml. The YamlProvider reads zone files from the directory given by directory. The trailing dot in example.com. is the DNS presentation of the zone name and should be retained. default_ttl: 3600 supplies a one-hour TTL when an individual record does not specify one.
The credential references use the env/ form. Before running a command, export the variables in the process environment rather than writing their values to YAML:

export AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY='replace-with-the-secret'Use the credential names and options documented by your chosen provider class. The example above demonstrates the structure; it is not a universal credential interface for every OctoDNS integration.
Options that become important in larger configurations
- Ordering controls: use the configuration options documented for deterministic provider and zone processing when output order matters to reviews.
- Wildcard zone matching: the configuration guide supports wildcard matching for zones; use it only when you understand which source and target entries will match each name.
- Schema validation: the project publishes a JSON Schema for checking configuration structure in editors or CI. Schema validation complements, but does not replace,
octodns-validate. - Multiple targets: list more than one target when the same desired records must be sent to several providers. Confirm that every target supports the records and semantics you use.
Write the zone file and understand record names
Create config/example.com.yaml to hold the records for the zone:

value: example.com.The empty key ('') represents the zone apex, so this creates an A record for example.com.. The www key creates www.example.com.. A wildcard name is written as * according to the records documentation.
Use the record fields required by the type: some records use a singular value, while address and set-style records commonly use values. Add an explicit TTL when a record needs a value different from the provider’s default:

- 203.0.113.20Check each record type against the current OctoDNS records documentation and the target provider's API. A syntactically valid YAML record can still be unsupported by a target, rejected by a provider, or interpreted differently when routing or DNSSEC features are involved.
Validate before contacting providers
Run the dedicated validator against the configuration file:
octodns-validate --config-file=config/octodns.yamlFix YAML indentation, missing zone files, invalid record fields, and schema errors before proceeding. Validation is a local correctness check; it does not prove that credentials work or that a provider supports every declared feature.
Use the safe plan-review-apply-verify loop
1. Generate a plan without changing DNS
octodns-sync --config-file=config/octodns.yamlWithout --doit, OctoDNS reads the source and target states and prints planned creates, updates, and deletes. Treat every deletion as significant. Investigate an unexpected change by checking the zone filename, the trailing-dot zone key, source/target assignments, record spelling, and the target provider's current contents.
2. Review the diff
- Confirm that the apex record and critical names such as mail, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, certificate validation, and service-discovery records are present.
- Check TTL changes separately from value changes; a lower TTL affects resolver caching and does not instantly erase already cached answers.
- Verify that the target provider supports each record type and any routing or alias behavior represented in the plan.
- Have another operator review production changes through Git history or a pull request.
3. Apply only the reviewed plan
octodns-sync --config-file=config/octodns.yaml --doitThe command applies the plan through the target provider's API. Keep the terminal output with the deployment record. Do not use a force option to bypass safety checks unless you have documented why the guard is safe to override.
4. Confirm idempotence
octodns-sync --config-file=config/octodns.yamlWhen the target matches the source, the subsequent plan should report No changes were planned. A non-empty plan immediately after an apply indicates drift, provider normalization, an unsupported field, eventual API consistency, or a configuration mismatch that deserves investigation.
5. Verify authoritative and recursive answers
Use dig to query the authoritative servers and a recursive resolver:

dig @1.1.1.1 example.com AReplace the authoritative-server placeholder with a nameserver listed at the delegation. Compare answers, TTLs, and response status. Recursive resolvers can continue returning cached data until the previous TTL expires, so a successful API update is not the same as immediate global visibility. The octodns-report command can provide an additional provider-oriented view of the resulting state:

Do not recreate a busy production zone from memory. Import the provider's current records first, then make small, reviewable changes.
Dump the current state
octodns-dump --config-file=config/octodns.yamlUse the dump command or a populate configuration supported by the provider integration to bring existing records into YAML. The exact provider options and output handling vary, so follow that integration's current command documentation.
Keep the first import close to reality
- Export or dump the zone while it is still served by the existing provider.
- Compare the generated names, TTLs, aliases, and record sets with the provider dashboard or API.
- Commit the minimally changed import before introducing cleanup, naming changes, or TTL policy.
- Run a no-
--doitplan against the existing target. The safest initial result is no meaningful change. - Apply incremental improvements one group at a time, verifying each group with
dig.
Some existing records may not initially satisfy OctoDNS's normal requirements. The migration guidance documents octodns.lenient: true for temporarily non-compliant records. Treat lenient mode as a migration aid, not a permanent substitute for correcting the records or confirming provider compatibility.

OctoDNS has integrations spanning cloud DNS, commercial managed DNS, BIND/RFC-2136, and other systems. There is no universal ranking because the right target depends on the records and operational guarantees your zone needs.

Install the provider-specific package separately from the core package and recheck its current documentation before deployment. Feature parity is not guaranteed across targets, so a configuration that works with one provider may need a different record model or may be impossible to synchronize to another.

Make Git the change log
Commit zone and configuration changes with a reason, reviewer, and rollback reference. Keep generated dumps or normalized files consistent so a pull request shows actual DNS changes rather than incidental formatting churn.

Detect drift on a schedule
Run a read-only plan from CI or a system timer. Alert when the plan contains unexpected updates or deletes. Drift can come from a manual dashboard edit, another automation system, provider normalization, or a record changed outside the managed zone.

Separate environments
Use a disposable zone for experiments and a protected production workflow for live domains. A production job should load credentials from a secret store or protected environment, run validation, publish the plan as an artifact, require approval, and then invoke the same configuration with --doit.
Control concurrency
Do not let two jobs synchronize the same zone at once. Serialize scheduled runs and pull-request deployments so one plan cannot be applied against a state changed by another job.
Plan for propagation and rollback
DNS changes are subject to resolver caching and provider propagation. A rollback is another DNS change, not an instantaneous undo. Keep the previous Git commit available, restore the desired records, apply a reviewed plan, and verify authoritative responses before interpreting recursive results.
Troubleshoot common failures
The command cannot find a provider class
Confirm that the provider package is installed inside the active virtual environment and that the class path in YAML exactly matches the integration's documentation. Run octodns-versions and inspect the environment used by automation; a system Python and the virtual environment can contain different packages.
The plan contains unexpected deletes
Stop before applying. Check that the zone source file is in the configured directory, that the zone key includes its trailing dot, and that the record name uses the expected relative form. Compare the provider's live records with the imported YAML. If another system owns part of the zone, do not put that same zone under OctoDNS ownership until you have a clear source-of-truth boundary.
Credentials are rejected
Verify that the environment variables exist in the shell or service account that launches OctoDNS, that the key has permission for the zone, and that the provider's endpoint and region settings are current. Never paste the secret into the repository or command history.
Validation passes but apply fails
Local validation cannot guarantee provider support. Look for an unsupported record type, invalid alias target, routing combination, DNSSEC restriction, API quota, or provider-side policy. Reduce the plan to a small change, consult the integration's current requirements, and rerun a no---doit plan after correcting the configuration.
Answers differ after a successful apply
Query an authoritative server first, then a recursive resolver. If authoritative data is correct but recursive data is old, wait for the prior TTL and check again. If authoritative data is wrong, inspect the provider response, nameserver delegation, and the next OctoDNS plan rather than repeatedly applying the same change.
What OctoDNS does not guarantee
- It does not provide zero-downtime DNS changes; resolver caching and provider behavior still govern visibility.
- It does not make provider features identical. Advanced routing, DNSSEC, record types, limits, and propagation differ by integration.
- It does not protect records that are outside the declared desired state. A managed zone can have records deleted when they are absent from the source.
- It does not replace operational review. The safest deployment remains a validated, reviewed plan applied with explicit intent and then verified from DNS.
For a Linux VPS deployment, the practical baseline is simple: isolate OctoDNS in a virtual environment, store YAML in Git, inject scoped credentials through the environment, validate locally, inspect every plan, apply only with --doit after approval, and verify with dig and octodns-report. That process gives you reproducibility without pretending that DNS propagation or provider-specific behavior can be abstracted away.
