A preview link is not a production launch. To put a vibe-coded app in front of real users safely, move through a controlled release: check the generated project locally, connect it to a host, create a preview deployment, test the preview, configure production-only settings, deploy the verified build, then point your domain’s DNS at the host and verify the public HTTPS URL.

This workflow applies whether your app was generated by an AI builder, assembled from prompts, or edited manually afterward. The commands below use Vercel’s CLI where a concrete command is documented; Netlify provides equivalent preview, branch, environment-variable, and custom-domain controls in its dashboard and CLI.

What changes when a vibe-coded app becomes production software?

Vibe coding can produce a working interface quickly, but a preview often runs with developer credentials, test data, permissive settings, or an automatically generated URL. Production is the live, user-facing version of the site. It needs a repeatable build, correctly scoped secrets, a known source revision, a real domain, HTTPS, and a way to detect and undo failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat “the page loaded once” as proof of readiness. A production release must also exercise navigation, forms, API calls, authentication, database-backed paths, static assets, mobile layouts, redirects, and the integrations that the generated code depends on.

The release sequence at a glance

  1. Link the project: connect the local directory to a project on your hosting platform.
  2. Configure variables: pull local values for development and add production values to the host’s Production environment.
  3. Run locally: catch build, routing, and integration errors before publishing anything.
  4. Create a preview: deploy an isolated, production-like build with a temporary URL.
  5. Verify the preview: test user journeys and inspect deployment logs.
  6. Promote the build: deploy the known-good revision to the production environment.
  7. Attach the domain: add the custom domain and apply the DNS records the host specifies.
  8. Check the public URL: verify HTTPS, apex and www behavior, canonical URLs, and the intended production deployment.
  9. Monitor and recover: watch logs and errors, and keep a rollback or redeploy path ready.

Prepare before connecting a host

Have these items ready:

  • The project directory and its source repository, if you use one.
  • The framework’s documented install and development command.
  • Accounts for the hosting platform, domain registrar, database, authentication provider, and other integrations used by the app.
  • A list of variables the code expects, including public configuration and server-only secrets.
  • A production database or API project that is intentionally separate from test data where the service supports separate environments.
  • Access to the registrar’s DNS management screen.
  • A short launch checklist and a person who can test the app after deployment.

Generated projects frequently contain assumptions that are invisible in the UI. Read the package scripts, framework configuration, route definitions, server functions, and README before deploying. Identify which routes are static, which execute server-side code, and which call third-party services. A host can build the front end successfully while an API route still fails because a variable, database migration, callback URL, or runtime setting is missing.

Step 1: Link the generated project to a hosting project

Vercel CLI path

From the project’s root directory, authenticate with the Vercel CLI if necessary, then run:

vercel link

The command associates the local directory with a Vercel project. Confirm that the selected account and project are the ones intended for this app. Linking the wrong project can send a legitimate production command to an unrelated site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Netlify path

In Netlify, create or select the site and connect the repository, or link the local directory with the Netlify CLI. Check the build command, publish directory, framework preset, and production branch in the site’s settings. Netlify’s Deploy Preview and branch-deploy behavior depends on those settings, so a successful upload is not enough if the wrong directory is being published.

Step 2: Put configuration and secrets in the right environment

Never commit API keys, database passwords, signing secrets, or private tokens to the generated source repository. Treat every value exposed to browser JavaScript as public, even if its name looks secret. Server-only credentials belong in the host’s protected environment-variable store and should be referenced by the server code at runtime or build time as the framework requires.

Pull local development values

Vercel documents this local workflow:

vercel env pull .env.local

This retrieves the variables available to the local development environment into .env.local. Keep that file out of version control when it contains secrets. Run the framework’s normal development command, or use:

vercel dev

Use values that point to test services while developing. Accidentally running local code against a production database can alter real records before the app has passed any release checks.

Set Production values deliberately

On Vercel, scope each value to the Production environment rather than assuming a Preview value will be used for the live site. Vercel defines Production as the live, user-facing version of the site. Review variable names for exact spelling and framework-specific prefixes; a one-character mismatch can make a generated app appear to have a broken API.

Netlify supports environment-variable management through its UI, CLI, API, and configuration-file approaches. Whichever method you use, verify the context in which each variable is available. Keep preview credentials pointed at test resources and production credentials pointed at production resources. If a variable is consumed during the build, a later runtime edit may not affect an already-built artifact; redeploy after changing build-time values.

Handle callbacks and allowed origins

Authentication providers, payment services, webhooks, and browser APIs commonly require an allowlist of callback or origin URLs. Add the preview URL for testing when the provider permits it, then add the final custom-domain URL before launch. Remove temporary entries that are no longer needed. Otherwise, login may work on the preview but fail on the domain, or a webhook may continue posting to a test endpoint.

Step 3: Run and inspect the app locally

Use the framework’s normal development command with the intended local variables. Check the terminal for missing-module, type-checking, migration, and server-start errors. Then exercise the app as a user rather than only viewing the home page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Open every primary route directly, including a deep link pasted into a new browser tab.
  • Submit each form with valid and invalid data and confirm that errors are understandable.
  • Test API calls, file uploads, search, pagination, and database reads and writes.
  • Sign in, sign out, reset a password if supported, and test an unauthorized request.
  • Inspect the browser console and network panel for failed requests, mixed-content warnings, and missing assets.
  • Resize to a phone viewport and test keyboard, focus, and touch behavior.

Fix local failures before creating a preview. A host’s build log is useful, but it is not a substitute for running the same user flows that will be used after launch.

Step 4: Create a preview deployment

Vercel preview

Run:

vercel deploy

This creates a deployment with a unique preview URL. It lets you test a production-like build without changing the live site. Record the deployment URL and the source revision associated with it so reviewers know exactly what they tested.

Netlify preview and branch deploys

Netlify provides Deploy Previews for changes such as pull requests and branch deploys for selected branches. The temporary netlify.app URL is distinct from the production custom domain. Use the preview context’s variables and services, then confirm that the preview actually built the commit you meant to review.

Step 5: Verify the preview like a release candidate

Use a clean browser session or an incognito window for authentication tests. Walk through the critical path from an unauthenticated first visit to the app’s most valuable successful action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Functional checks

  • Home page and every navigation link return the expected content.
  • Direct requests to nested routes do not produce a host-level 404.
  • Forms validate input, show a success state, and handle a failed API response.
  • API calls reach the intended service and return the expected status codes.
  • Authentication, authorization, session expiry, and logout behave correctly.
  • Database-backed pages show current test data and handle an empty result.
  • Images, fonts, icons, downloads, and other static assets load from the preview URL.
  • Third-party integrations use preview credentials and callback URLs, not production ones.

Deployment and runtime checks

Review the deployment’s build output for warnings that indicate a missing variable, skipped generated file, unsupported runtime, or failed migration. Vercel documents vercel curl for making checks against a deployment and vercel logs for inspecting runtime output. Use those commands when a page appears blank or an API call fails after the build itself succeeds.

For Netlify, inspect the deploy log, function log, and deploy-context settings. Separate a compile failure from a runtime failure: a compile failure prevents a deploy, while a runtime failure can affect only a route or function after the site appears online.

Step 6: Freeze production configuration before the launch

Choose the exact commit or artifact that passed preview testing. Then review the Production environment one more time:

  • Every required production variable exists and is scoped to Production.
  • Database, storage, email, analytics, and payment endpoints are the intended live services.
  • Authentication providers contain the final callback and allowed-origin entries.
  • Any required schema migration has been run using the provider’s safe production procedure.
  • Secrets are absent from the repository, client bundle, screenshots, and issue logs.
  • The build command and output directory match the project being released.

Do not silently change code and production variables at the same time if you can avoid it. Keeping the release inputs identifiable makes a failure easier to diagnose and a rollback more predictable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 7: Deploy the verified build to production

Vercel production command

After the preview is approved, run:

vercel deploy --prod

This is Vercel’s documented command for deploying to production. Confirm the terminal output identifies the expected project and that the resulting deployment corresponds to the reviewed source. A production deployment is user-facing even before the custom domain is attached, so keep the temporary URL private if the app is not ready for public access.

Netlify production branch

Netlify normally deploys production from the branch configured as the production branch. Merge the reviewed change into that branch only after preview checks pass, then watch the production deploy log through completion. If your site uses a manual deploy or a different branch strategy, document that trigger so another operator can reproduce it.

Step 8: Attach the custom domain and configure DNS

Add the domain at the host

On Vercel, the CLI form is:

vercel domains add example.com <project-name>

Replace the example values with the actual domain and project name. The host then shows the DNS records required for verification and traffic routing. Netlify provides domain management controls for associating a custom domain with the production site.

Apply the host’s DNS instructions at the registrar

Open the DNS management page at the company where the domain’s authoritative DNS is managed. Add or edit only the records requested by the host, paying attention to the record name, type, and destination. Remove conflicting records for the same hostname when the host explicitly tells you to do so; leaving an old record in place can send some visitors to a different server.

DNS changes are controlled by the registrar or DNS provider, not by the code repository. If another service manages the nameservers, make the change there instead of in a registrar screen that is not authoritative. The host’s domain panel should change from pending verification to an active status once the records match.

Use HTTPS and define apex versus www

Decide whether the canonical address is the apex domain, such as example.com, or the www hostname. Configure the other form to redirect to that canonical address. Test both forms after DNS is active. Vercel states that it automatically provisions an SSL certificate after domain setup; still verify that the certificate is presented on the exact hostname users will visit.

Step 9: Prove that the public URL serves the intended production deployment

Open the final address with https:// in a clean browser. Check the address bar, redirect chain, and page source rather than relying on a cached tab.

  • The custom domain loads over HTTPS without a certificate warning.
  • The apex and www hostnames follow the chosen redirect policy.
  • The canonical URL uses the intended hostname and protocol.
  • Navigation, forms, API calls, authentication, and assets still work after the hostname changes.
  • Absolute links, email links, OAuth callbacks, webhook URLs, and CORS or origin rules use the final domain.
  • Robots rules, sitemap output, analytics, and error monitoring are configured as appropriate for a public site.
  • The page is backed by the production deployment and not an old preview artifact.

Test a deep link, a logged-out request, and a failing request after the domain switch. Host-level routing and application-level routing can behave differently when the hostname changes.

Vercel and Netlify: which workflow fits?

Concern Vercel Netlify
Preview workflow Unique preview deployment URLs created from the CLI or connected workflow. Deploy Previews for changes such as pull requests, plus branch deploys.
Production trigger vercel deploy --prod from the CLI, or a configured production-branch workflow. Deployment from the site’s configured production branch, or the site’s chosen manual workflow.
Environment variables Environment-scoped values; vercel env pull .env.local supports local development. Variables managed through the UI, CLI, API, or configuration files, with deploy-context scoping.
Domain setup Add the domain with the CLI or dashboard, follow the displayed DNS records, and receive automatic SSL provisioning after setup. Use domain management to associate the custom domain and follow the site’s DNS instructions.
Debugging vercel curl and vercel logs provide deployment and runtime checks. Use deploy logs, function logs, and context settings to separate build and runtime problems.
Temporary URL Preview deployment URL, separate from the production domain. Temporary netlify.app deploy URL, separate from the production custom domain.

The safer choice is the platform whose build settings, server runtime, functions, and integration requirements match the generated project. A familiar dashboard does not compensate for an unsupported runtime or an unclear environment model.

Troubleshoot the failures that appear most often

The build fails before a preview is created

Read the first actionable error in the deploy log, not only the final summary. Confirm the package manager and lockfile, install command, framework version, build command, and publish directory. Reproduce the same command locally with a clean install. Missing generated files and case-sensitive import paths often pass on one development machine and fail on the host.

The site loads but API calls fail

Check whether the variable exists in the deployment’s environment and whether the code expects a build-time or runtime value. Verify the API base URL, allowed origin, authentication token, and server-function runtime. Use deployment logs and a direct request with vercel curl where applicable; a browser console error alone may hide the server’s real response.

Login works in preview but not on the domain

Add the final HTTPS callback and allowed-origin entries to the identity provider. Check cookie domain, secure-cookie, redirect, and canonical-host settings. Then redeploy if those settings are embedded during the build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The domain shows the wrong site or remains unverified

Inspect which nameservers are authoritative, compare the registrar records with the host’s current instructions, and remove conflicting records only when appropriate. Confirm that the domain was added to the intended project, not another site in the same account. Avoid guessing record values; use the exact values displayed by the host.

Only some routes return 404

Open the failing route directly on the production domain. If the host serves the root page but not deep links, configure the framework’s or host’s history-fallback behavior for a single-page application. If only server routes fail, check function routing, file placement, runtime compatibility, and production variables.

Security and operational safeguards

  • Use least-privilege keys and separate preview credentials from production credentials.
  • Rotate any secret that was pasted into source, a public issue, a screenshot, or a client bundle.
  • Protect administrative routes and verify authorization on the server, not only in the interface.
  • Turn on the host’s access controls, review deployment permissions, and require review before production merges where the team supports it.
  • Record the production deployment’s commit, variable changes, migrations, and domain configuration.
  • Keep backups or provider-supported recovery options for data that the app can modify.

Monitor after launch and keep a rollback path

Watch the first real requests in host logs, function logs, authentication logs, and the app’s error-monitoring system. Look for failed server calls, elevated authorization errors, missing assets, webhook retries, and unexpected database writes. Verify analytics and uptime or error alerts from the public domain rather than from a preview URL.

Before announcing the launch, identify how to return to the last known-good deployment. Depending on the host and workflow, that may mean redeploying the reviewed commit, promoting a previous deployment, or reverting the production branch and allowing the normal pipeline to run. Write down who can perform that action and which data migrations cannot be reversed. A code rollback does not automatically undo a destructive database change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final production gate

  • The preview build completed without errors.
  • Routes, forms, API calls, authentication, integrations, and mobile layouts passed on the preview URL.
  • Production variables are present, correctly scoped, and absent from committed source.
  • The production deployment points to the expected commit or artifact.
  • DNS records match the host’s instructions and the intended project.
  • HTTPS works on the custom domain, and apex or www redirects are correct.
  • Canonical URL, robots rules, sitemap, analytics, and error monitoring are configured as needed.
  • A rollback or redeploy procedure has been tested or at least clearly documented.

When every gate passes, the custom domain is not merely forwarding to a preview. It is serving a verified production deployment with the configuration, security boundaries, and recovery plan required for real users.
