Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Use the VPS as the host, run Rancher with its state mounted to durable storage, and deploy the Node.js service and MongoDB service on a private network. Publish only the application through an HTTPS ingress or reverse proxy. Give MongoDB a persistent volume, keep credentials out of Git, and back up both MongoDB data and Rancher state.
This design is appropriate for a small production system or a controlled staging environment. A single VPS is also a single failure domain, so it does not provide the resilience of a multi-node cluster or a managed database service.
Recommended Free Tools
What the finished deployment looks like
The VPS runs Docker and a single-node Rancher installation. Rancher’s Docker installation includes an embedded local Kubernetes cluster and requires the --privileged capability for features that start containers inside containers. Rancher then manages the application workloads.
The application has two services:
- web: your Node.js container, attached to the private application network and reachable from the HTTPS ingress.
- mongo: the MongoDB container, attached only to the private network and backed by a persistent volume.
Inside the web container, MongoDB is addressed as mongo, the service name. localhost would point back to the Node.js container and is therefore incorrect. Clients on the internet never connect directly to MongoDB; only the web service is published.

| Database durability | Named or host-backed volume mounted at MongoDB’s data directory |
| Public traffic | HTTPS ingress or reverse proxy in front of the web service |

1. Provision and harden the VPS
Start with a Linux distribution and Docker version supported by the Rancher release you intend to install. Record the chosen Rancher, Node.js and MongoDB versions so that a later rebuild is reproducible.
Create an administrative path
- Create a named administrator account and use SSH keys rather than a password for routine administration.
- Keep direct root login disabled where your distribution and recovery process allow it. Use
sudofor privileged commands. - Apply the operating-system security updates before installing Rancher or your application.
- Configure the host firewall to allow SSH only from the addresses that need it, and allow web traffic on TCP ports 80 and 443. Do not open MongoDB’s port to the internet.
Prepare DNS and storage
Create an A record, and an AAAA record if the VPS has usable IPv6, pointing your application hostname to the VPS. Decide where durable data will live before deployment. A separate block-storage volume or host-backed volume makes it easier to snapshot and restore MongoDB without tying the data to a disposable container layer.
Measure your application’s memory use and MongoDB working set under realistic load before selecting VPS capacity. There is no trustworthy universal CPU, RAM, throughput or uptime figure for this architecture; sizing should come from your workload and the provider’s documented resources.
2. Install Rancher with durable state
Rancher’s supported single-node Docker method uses the Rancher image, publishes ports 80 and 443, and runs with the privileges required by its embedded cluster. Follow the installation page for the exact release image and SSL options rather than substituting an arbitrary tag.
- Create a dedicated host directory or durable volume for Rancher state, with ownership and permissions suitable for the Docker installation.
- In Rancher’s single-node Docker instructions, select the release you have approved and copy its command. Keep the
--privilegedoption, the restart policy, and the port mappings required by that release. - Bind-mount the durable host location to
/var/lib/rancher. Replacing the Rancher container must not replace this directory. - Open the Rancher URL over HTTPS and complete the initial administrator setup. Rancher requires SSL because it protects Rancher network communication, including login and cluster interactions.
For a public installation, use a certificate from a recognized certificate authority or the documented Let’s Encrypt flow. A self-signed certificate can be useful for a closed test environment, but it causes trust warnings and is not a suitable public endpoint.

Check the installation before deploying the app
- Confirm that the Rancher container remains running after a host reboot.
- Open the Rancher URL from a workstation and verify that the browser sees the expected certificate name.
- Confirm that the local cluster reports healthy nodes and that Rancher can create a test workload.
- Record the host path or volume containing
/var/lib/rancher; it belongs in the backup plan.
3. Build a production Node.js image
Build the web image from a maintained Node.js base image whose tag is pinned to a version tested by your project. Do not use an unpinned moving tag for a production release. The image should install dependencies, copy the application source, set the production environment, and start the server on the port your application actually listens on.
Dockerfile responsibilities
- Copy dependency manifests first, install production dependencies, then copy the application source so dependency layers can be reused.
- Set
NODE_ENV=productionin the image or deployment configuration. - Run the application with its normal production command rather than a development watcher.
- Expose the listening port as documentation for the orchestrator; exposing a port alone does not publish it to the internet.
- Run as a non-root user when the application and its dependencies support it.
Build the image in CI or on a controlled build host, tag it with an immutable release identifier, and make that identifier available to Rancher. Keep the Dockerfile and lock file in version control. A release should be reproducible from those files without copying dependencies from a developer workstation.
4. Define the web and MongoDB services
Rancher can manage services from a Compose-style stack or from Kubernetes workloads, depending on the Rancher version and cluster configuration. The names and screens vary between releases, but the required relationships do not: both services share a private network, the web service receives the MongoDB connection string, and MongoDB has no public port mapping.
Compose-style service model
The following compact model shows the important fields. Pin the image tags used by your approved release before applying it. The password expression is shown to explain the connection; use a secret mechanism for the actual credential.
services:
web:
build: .
environment:
NODE_ENV: 'production'
MONGODB_URI: 'mongodb://appuser:${MONGO_APP_PASSWORD}@mongo:27017/app?authSource=admin'
depends_on:
- mongo
networks:
- app_private
restart: unless-stopped
mongo:
image: 'mongo'
volumes:
- mongo_data:/data/db
networks:
- app_private
restart: unless-stopped
volumes:
mongo_data:
networks:
app_private:
driver: bridge
This example deliberately has no ports entry for MongoDB. The web service is reached through the ingress or reverse proxy, not by publishing the Node.js container directly to every interface.

Connection-string details
Use the MongoDB service name as the hostname: mongo. Use the database name required by your application and set the authentication source to match where the user was created. If the Node.js driver receives its URI from an environment setting, keep the same setting name in every environment so deployment changes do not require code edits.
At startup, the application should handle a database that is still initializing. A health check that reports the web process is alive is different from one that confirms a successful MongoDB operation; use both where your application supports them.
5. Make MongoDB data survive container replacement
A container’s writable layer is disposable. Attach a named Docker volume or a host-backed volume to MongoDB’s data directory, normally /data/db for the official MongoDB image. Docker manages a named volume independently from an individual container, so removing and recreating the MongoDB container does not remove the volume unless you explicitly delete it.
Volume checks
- Declare the volume in the Rancher stack or create the equivalent persistent volume and claim in Kubernetes.
- Mount it only at MongoDB’s data directory; do not mount an empty host directory over the wrong path.
- Insert a test document through the application or a controlled administrative connection.
- Restart or recreate the MongoDB workload without deleting the volume.
- Read the test document back and record the result in the deployment checklist.
Persistence is not the same as backup. A failed disk, accidental deletion, filesystem corruption or compromised host can destroy both the container and its local volume. Schedule MongoDB backups to storage outside the VPS and perform restoration tests on a separate environment. Keep retention rules and encryption requirements with the backup procedure.
Back up Rancher state too
Back up the host location mounted at /var/lib/rancher. That state contains the single-node Rancher installation’s operational data. A database backup alone cannot rebuild Rancher’s configuration, and a Rancher-state backup alone cannot restore application records.

6. Handle passwords and other secrets safely
Never commit MongoDB root credentials, application passwords, private keys or certificate material to Git. A protected env_file can keep ordinary configuration out of the Compose document, but Docker’s guidance warns against using ordinary environment variables for sensitive passwords and recommends secrets instead.
Separate configuration from secrets
- Keep non-sensitive settings such as
NODE_ENV, a log level and a public application URL in normal deployment configuration. - Store the MongoDB application password in Rancher or the underlying orchestrator’s secret facility, with access limited to the web and database workloads that need it.
- If a protected environment file is unavoidable, keep it outside the repository, restrict its filesystem permissions, and prevent it from entering build logs.
- Use a dedicated least-privilege MongoDB application user rather than using the root user for normal requests.
- Rotate credentials after staff changes, suspected exposure or a planned security cycle, and update the dependent service in a controlled deployment.
Changing a password requires coordination: create or rotate the MongoDB user, update the secret consumed by the web service, restart the web workload, and verify a read and a write before removing the old credential.
7. Put the application behind HTTPS
Point the public DNS name at an ingress or reverse-proxy layer that terminates TLS. The proxy forwards requests to the internal web service over the private network. Expose only the proxy’s web ports; do not publish MongoDB.
TLS choices
- Recognized certificate authority: use a certificate whose name matches the public hostname and renew it before expiration.
- Documented Let’s Encrypt flow: use Rancher’s supported certificate procedure and ensure the hostname resolves to the VPS so validation can complete.
Rancher’s own external access also uses ports 80 and 443 and requires SSL for secure communication. Decide whether Rancher’s administrative endpoint and the application endpoint use separate hostnames. Restrict administrative access with firewall rules or an additional access layer; do not treat the public application hostname as an administrative control.
Proxy correctness
- Forward the original host and protocol headers so the Node.js framework can generate correct URLs and enforce secure cookies.
- Set a request-body limit appropriate for the application rather than accepting an unlimited upload.
- Configure WebSocket or long-lived connection support if the application requires it.
- Keep the internal service port private and let the proxy perform TLS termination.
8. Deploy through Rancher
After the image, network, volume and secrets are defined, create the workload in Rancher. The exact navigation differs by release, so use the labels shown by your installation.

- Open the local cluster and choose the project or namespace that will own the application.
- Create the private network or Kubernetes Service definitions required by the stack.
- Deploy MongoDB with its persistent volume, secret references and restart policy.
- Deploy the web workload with the immutable image tag,
NODE_ENV=production, the MongoDB URI secret and the internal listening port. - Create the ingress or reverse-proxy route for the public hostname and attach the TLS certificate.
- Wait for both workloads to become ready. Inspect Rancher events and container logs instead of repeatedly restarting a failing workload.
Initial verification
- Request the application’s configured health endpoint through the HTTPS hostname.
- Exercise one authenticated or representative application path that reads from MongoDB.
- Create or update a harmless test record, read it back, and remove it if the application allows that operation.
- Confirm that the browser receives a valid certificate and that HTTP traffic is redirected or otherwise handled according to your policy.
- Verify that no public scan or external connection can reach MongoDB’s port.
9. Update the web service without touching database data
Build a new web image for each release and deploy only that service. Docker’s production Compose guidance uses the pattern docker compose build web followed by docker compose up --no-deps -d web; the equivalent Rancher action is to update the web workload’s image and redeploy it without recreating MongoDB or deleting its volume.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Run tests against the new image and confirm its database migration requirements.
- Build and tag the image immutably.
- Update the web workload to that tag in Rancher.
- Wait for the replacement web container to pass readiness and application health checks.
- Check logs, Rancher events and a real read/write operation.
- Keep the prior image available for rollback until the release has been accepted.
Do not apply a schema migration that the previous application version cannot tolerate unless the release plan explicitly uses a compatible expand-and-contract sequence. If the new web container fails, roll back the web image first; do not remove MongoDB’s persistent volume while troubleshooting an application release.
10. Operate and maintain the VPS
Reliability controls
- Use restart policies for the web and MongoDB workloads, while remembering that a restart policy cannot repair corrupted data or a full disk.
- Monitor disk capacity, inode usage, memory pressure and MongoDB health. Alert before the volume reaches capacity.
- Retain application and database logs long enough to investigate failures, and prevent unbounded log files from consuming the VPS.
- Patch the host, Rancher image, Node.js base image and MongoDB image on a planned schedule.
- Test both MongoDB restoration and Rancher-state restoration, not merely backup-job completion.
- Document DNS, certificate renewal, firewall rules, image tags, volume locations, secret rotation and rollback steps.
Production-specific configuration
Keep development and production settings separate. Docker recommends a production-specific Compose override for deployment changes such as published ports, environment values and restart policies. The same separation principle applies in Rancher: development images, debug settings and temporary database ports should not leak into the public workload.
11. Troubleshoot common failures
The web container cannot connect to MongoDB
- Check that both workloads are attached to the same private network or namespace services.
- Confirm that the URI hostname is
mongo, notlocalhostor the VPS address. - Verify the username, password, database name and authentication source.
- Read MongoDB and web logs for authentication, DNS or connection-refused errors.
- Check that MongoDB finished initialization before judging the web workload unhealthy.
Data disappeared after a redeploy
- Inspect the MongoDB workload and confirm that the expected volume is still attached.
- Verify that the mount targets MongoDB’s actual data directory.
- Check whether an operator deleted the volume while removing a stack.
- Restore the newest valid off-host backup if the volume was deleted or corrupted.
HTTPS fails or the browser warns about the certificate
- Confirm that DNS resolves to the VPS and that ports 80 and 443 reach the ingress.
- Check that the certificate covers the exact hostname and has not expired.
- Review Rancher certificate and ingress events for validation or routing errors.
- Ensure the proxy forwards the request to the web service’s internal port, not MongoDB.
Rancher is unavailable after a container replacement
Verify that the replacement used the same durable mount for /var/lib/rancher, the required privileged mode and the release-supported ports. If the state directory was omitted, restore it from backup before attempting further changes.
12. Know when a single VPS is no longer enough
| Architecture | Operational simplicity | Failure domain | Scaling and recovery | Database topology |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rancher on one VPS with local MongoDB | Lowest setup and operating complexity | One host; a host or storage failure can take down the stack | Vertical scaling and restore-based recovery; limited by one machine | Single MongoDB instance with backups |
| Multi-node Kubernetes with self-managed MongoDB | More components, scheduling and upgrade work | Can tolerate selected node failures when designed correctly | Horizontal workload scheduling, but database replication and storage still require specialist design | Replicated topology that must be operated and tested |
| Rancher or Kubernetes with a managed MongoDB service | Application operations remain, database administration is reduced | Depends on the provider’s architecture and chosen plan | Provider may supply scaling, backups and failover; verify the actual terms | Provider-managed topology and recovery process |
Move beyond one VPS when downtime or data-loss objectives cannot be met by restore-based recovery, when the workload needs more capacity than one host can provide, or when operating a replicated database is justified by the business. The cited Rancher and Docker mechanics explain how to run the single-node design; they do not establish a current price or service-level comparison for larger architectures.
