Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
Deploying Meteor.js on a VPS means turning the project into a plain Node.js bundle, installing its native dependencies on the target Linux machine, running that Node process on a private port, and putting Nginx in front of it for the public HTTP, HTTPS, and WebSocket endpoint. The reliable sequence is: match the VPS architecture and Node.js version, build and transfer the bundle, run npm install inside programs/server, configure ROOT_URL, PORT, and MONGO_URL, then validate Nginx, TLS, database access, and WebSockets before promoting the same tested build to production.
What the finished deployment looks like
A production Meteor installation on a VPS normally has four layers:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Browser: connects to your public domain over HTTPS.
- Nginx: terminates the public HTTP/HTTPS connection, forwards requests, and preserves WebSocket upgrades.
- Node.js: runs Meteor’s generated
main.json an internal interface and port such as127.0.0.1:3000. - MongoDB: stores application data and must be reachable from the VPS through a properly secured connection.
meteor build creates a deployable application bundle that runs without the Meteor command-line tool. The bundle is not universally portable: it must be built for the operating system and CPU architecture of the server that will run it. Native C/C++ addons also need to be rebuilt on that server.
Nginx should be the public endpoint. Keeping Node on a private port means firewall rules can expose only Nginx, while Nginx handles certificates, redirects, request forwarding, and WebSocket connection upgrades.

Prerequisites and planning checklist
Before building anything, collect the values and access you will need:
- A supported 64-bit Linux VPS and administrative access.
- The Node.js version required by the Meteor release.
- Nginx installed on the VPS.
- A DNS record that can point your application hostname to the VPS address.
- A MongoDB deployment that supports your Meteor version and application requirements.
- A plan for process supervision, logs, updates, backups, TLS certificates, and firewall rules.
- A separate staging target for release verification.
Node.js compatibility is a hard prerequisite. Meteor’s documentation warns: If you use a mis-matched version of Node when deploying your application, you will encounter errors!
Check the project’s meteor node -v output and, after building, inspect the generated .node_version.txt. Install that required version on the VPS rather than assuming the newest system package is suitable.
1. Prepare the VPS
Install the operating-system packages
Start with a current, supported 64-bit Linux installation. Apply the distribution’s security updates, install the Node.js version required by the project, and install Nginx. The exact package commands differ by distribution, so use the package manager documented for that operating system. Confirm the installed runtime with:
node -v
npm -v
nginx -v
The Node version shown by node -v must match the version expected by the Meteor project. A mismatch can surface as deployment or native-module errors rather than an obvious version warning.
Configure DNS before testing the proxy
Create an A or equivalent DNS record for the hostname users will visit, pointing it at the VPS. If you will serve both the bare domain and a subdomain, decide which hostname is canonical and configure redirects deliberately. DNS changes can take time to propagate; test resolution from a separate network before diagnosing an application failure.
Plan the database connection
Decide whether MongoDB will run on another managed service, a separate server, or the same VPS. A managed deployment is operationally simpler for many teams, but whichever option you choose must support the MongoDB version required by the application, replica-set and oplog behavior where the application needs it, monitoring, backups, access control, and encryption.

2. Build the Meteor bundle for the VPS
Run the build from the project source, using a machine with the project’s Meteor toolchain and dependencies. Install production dependencies and specify the target architecture explicitly:
npm install --production
meteor build /path/to/build --architecture os.linux.x86_64
The output is a compressed bundle containing the server application and client assets. The architecture value must match the VPS. An x86_64 build is not interchangeable with an ARM64 build; build a separate bundle when your staging and production machines use different CPU architectures.
Keep the build output versioned. A release identifier, source revision, and build date in your deployment records make it possible to identify exactly what is running and to return to a previous bundle if a release fails.
What the build does not do
- It does not install the Meteor tool on the production server.
- It does not make dependencies built on another operating system safe to copy into production.
- It does not configure
ROOT_URL,PORT, MongoDB credentials, Nginx, TLS, or process supervision.
3. Transfer and install the bundle on the VPS
Copy the compressed bundle to the VPS and extract it into a release directory owned by the account that will run the application. After extraction, enter the bundle directory and install the server dependencies on the VPS itself:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11cd my_build_bundle_directory
(cd programs/server && npm install)
This command is required because it rebuilds native C/C++ addons for the operating system and CPU architecture that will actually run the app. Copying a node_modules directory from a different OS or architecture can produce an invalid ELF header
error. If that error appears, remove the copied dependencies and repeat the install inside programs/server on the target machine.
Keep releases in separate directories instead of overwriting the active one. A versioned layout makes rollback safer: install and verify a new directory, then change the process supervisor’s release path only after checks pass.

4. Configure and start Meteor privately
Meteor reads three deployment variables that must be correct:
| Variable | What it controls | Typical value |
|---|---|---|
ROOT_URL |
The public base URL Meteor uses when generating absolute links and determining its external address. | https://your-app.example |
PORT |
The internal TCP port on which the Node process listens. | 3000 |
MONGO_URL |
The MongoDB connection URI used by the application. | mongodb://db-host:27017/myapp |
Start the generated server with the public URL in ROOT_URL, an internal port in PORT, and the secured database URI in MONGO_URL:

node main.js
Run this command from the directory containing main.js. In a real deployment, use a process supervisor appropriate to the VPS distribution so the service starts after a reboot, restarts after an unexpected exit, and writes logs where operators can inspect them. Do not rely on an interactive SSH shell for production uptime.
Keep Node off the public interface
Bind the application to a private listener where practical, such as 127.0.0.1:3000, and expose only Nginx through the firewall. The exact binding mechanism depends on the Meteor and Node versions in use; the important boundary is that the public DNS name reaches Nginx, not an unprotected Node port.
Protect configuration secrets
Do not commit database credentials to the source tree or place them in a world-readable release directory. Supply environment variables through the process supervisor’s protected configuration, restrict file permissions, and rotate credentials if they have been exposed in shell history, logs, or source control.
5. Configure Nginx as the reverse proxy
Point the application hostname at the VPS, then create an Nginx server block that forwards traffic to the private Node listener. Meteor uses WebSockets, so the proxy location must preserve HTTP/1.1 and the connection-upgrade headers.

Use the configuration layout required by your Linux distribution, and adapt the server name and upstream port to your deployment. Certificate automation and the final HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect vary by distribution and certificate tooling; add TLS only after the plain proxy works, then redirect HTTP to HTTPS once certificate renewal is in place.
Validate before reloading
- Check that DNS resolves the hostname to the VPS.
- Confirm the Meteor process is listening on the expected private port.
- Run
nginx -tand fix every reported syntax or file-path error. - Reload Nginx using the service command supplied by your distribution.
- Open the site and test a normal page load, login or other representative application request, and a feature that requires a live WebSocket connection.
A page that loads while live updates, subscriptions, or hot data changes fail usually indicates a WebSocket upgrade or proxy-header problem rather than a MongoDB query issue.
6. Connect and secure MongoDB
The VPS must be able to reach the host and port in MONGO_URL. Test network reachability from the VPS, then verify that the MongoDB credentials have only the permissions the application requires.
For production, evaluate these properties before selecting a deployment:
- Version support: the server version must be supported by the Meteor release and your application’s MongoDB driver.
- Replica set and oplog behavior: use a deployment that provides the topology and oplog access required by your application’s real-time features.
- Monitoring and alerts: watch connection failures, replication health, storage, CPU, memory, and query latency.
- Backups: use continuous or otherwise regular backups, and periodically test restoring them.
- Access control: require authentication, restrict network access with an allow-list, and avoid exposing MongoDB directly to the public internet.
- Encryption: use encryption in transit and encryption at rest where supported and required by your risk model.
- Location: place the database in the same region as the app when possible to reduce network latency.
Keep the MongoDB URI out of Nginx configuration and client-visible code. If the database provider requires TLS options, include them in the URI or the supervisor’s environment exactly as that provider documents.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Release through staging, then promote the identical build
Build once, deploy that candidate to staging, run QA, and promote the same bundle to production. Rebuilding after QA can introduce a different dependency tree or generated asset set, making the tested result no longer identical to the production result.

ROOT_URL,PORT, andMONGO_URL. - Exercise ordinary pages, authentication, data writes, subscriptions, file uploads, scheduled jobs, and any integrations your app uses.
- Review application and Nginx logs, restart behavior, and database connectivity.
- Promote the exact tested bundle, changing only environment-specific values such as hostname and database URI.
The --production flag used during dependency installation or a build is not itself a production deployment mechanism. Production readiness comes from the deployment process, supervision, proxy, database controls, monitoring, backups, and staged verification.

Operational safeguards after launch
Process supervision and logs
Use a supervisor that starts the app at boot, restarts it after failure, and records stdout and stderr. Set restart limits so a persistent configuration error does not create an endless crash loop. Retain enough logs to correlate Node failures, Nginx responses, and database events.
Backups and rollback
Back up MongoDB independently of the application bundle. Keep more than one known-good application release, document the active release path, and practice switching back to the previous bundle. A rollback cannot undo a destructive database migration, so pair schema changes with a tested migration and recovery plan.
Updates
When upgrading Meteor, Node.js, or MongoDB, first build and test in staging with the new versions. Recheck native dependency installation, WebSocket behavior, database compatibility, and the generated .node_version.txt before production promotion.
Security boundaries
- Expose HTTP/HTTPS through Nginx and keep the Node listener private.
- Allow MongoDB traffic only from the application’s required network sources.
- Apply operating-system security updates and limit administrative SSH access.
- Use HTTPS in production and verify certificate renewal before the existing certificate expires.
- Monitor disk space, because application logs, uploaded files, and database backups can fill a VPS even when CPU usage is low.
Alternatives to a self-managed VPS
A custom VPS gives you control over the operating system, proxy, process layout, and release process, but you also own patching, monitoring, failover, TLS, and database operations. Other deployment models change that balance:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Option | Operational burden | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPS with Nginx and a custom bundle | Highest | Teams that need control over the OS, proxy, and process layout. | You operate patching, monitoring, failover, TLS, and the database. |
| Meteor Up (Mup) | Medium | Teams wanting repeatable deployment automation. | Verify its current maintenance status and adapt configuration to current Meteor versions. |
| Docker | Medium | Teams standardizing container deployment. | You still own orchestration, secrets, storage, and monitoring. |
| Galaxy Cloud | Lowest infrastructure burden | Teams prioritizing managed Meteor operations. | There is an external service cost and a platform-specific deployment model. |
Galaxy Cloud is the managed alternative when you do not want to operate a VPS, Nginx, process supervision, and database infrastructure yourself. Choose the VPS route when those controls and responsibilities are intentional, not because the initial server setup appears simpler.
