Configure your object store to publish object-change notifications to a queue or event bus, then have consumers retrieve the relevant object and process it idempotently. Native notifications can commonly arrive within seconds, but that is a typical behavior—not a hard end-to-end latency guarantee. Design for duplicate events, reordering, retries and occasional longer delays.
The key architectural distinction is between learning that an object changed and finishing useful work on that object. Storage notifications trigger the work; queues and event buses buffer or route it; consumers fetch or otherwise process the object. Each stage contributes to the time before the result is ready.
What a low-latency object-event pipeline does
Object storage is optimized for storing and retrieving objects, not for running a consumer continuously to check whether each object has changed. A notification-driven pipeline lets the storage service announce selected changes—such as an object being created—so a downstream service can react without relying on frequent polling.
A common flow is:
- An application uploads or changes an object.
- The storage service emits a notification describing the change.
- A queue or event bus accepts and, where configured, routes that notification.
- A consumer receives the event, validates it, and retrieves or processes the object.
- The consumer records successful work and safely handles retries or duplicate notifications.
Keep notifications compact: they identify the relevant object and change, while the consumer obtains the object itself. This keeps the event channel focused on signaling and avoids treating a notification as a substitute for the object. The exact fields vary by provider and event type.

Latency should be measured from the upload or object change through the consumer’s successful completion, not just from storage to notification service. Queue wait time, consumer availability, object retrieval, processing duration and retries can all extend the end-to-end interval.
Choose a notification and delivery path
Select the transport according to the consumers and the behavior you need. A direct queue is useful when workers should poll and process independently of the upload path. A publish-and-subscribe service can fan one publication out to multiple subscribers. An event bus is useful when rules and routing to different targets are important. A managed function can be appropriate when a service-managed function should respond to events.
| Option | Useful when | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Direct queue | Workers should retrieve messages when they are ready, with processing decoupled from uploads. | Choose queue behavior, retention and consumer concurrency to fit the workload. A queue does not itself make object processing idempotent or guarantee end-to-end latency. |
| Publish/subscribe | One publication should reach multiple subscribers. | Confirm the delivery and retry behavior for each subscriber path; fan-out does not remove the need to handle duplicate work. |
| Event bus | Rules, filtering or routing to multiple targets are part of the design. | Routing adds a delivery stage. Target retries and an optional dead-letter queue affect what happens after an event reaches the bus. |
| Managed function | A managed function is the intended event handler. | Function execution is only one part of the pipeline; measure through successful completion, including any downstream work. |
These are architectural roles, not interchangeable latency promises. A queue may be the right fit for buffering and worker control, while a bus may be better for routing or a publish/subscribe service for fan-out. The reviewed provider documentation does not establish one universally best choice.
AWS: route S3 object events to the right target
Amazon S3 Event Notifications can publish selected object events to Amazon SNS, Amazon SQS, AWS Lambda or Amazon EventBridge. AWS describes S3 notification delivery as at least once and says notifications typically arrive in seconds, but can sometimes take a minute or longer. That is provider-reported typical behavior, not a latency SLA or an independent benchmark. See Amazon S3 Event Notifications (AWS documentation, accessed October 9, 2026).

Use SQS when workers need a buffer
Choose direct SQS when consumers should poll a queue and uploads should not depend on workers being immediately available. This separates the upload from the time a worker handles the event. S3 does not support an SQS FIFO queue as a direct notification destination. AWS documents using EventBridge to send S3 events to FIFO queues when that queue type is required; that route has additional configuration and is not a promise of end-to-end ordering or lower latency. See S3 Event Notifications and Using EventBridge.
Use SNS when one event needs multiple subscribers
SNS is a fit when a single publication should reach more than one subscriber. Consider each subscriber’s availability and delivery handling as part of the design: one subscriber’s successful processing does not mean every downstream action has completed.
Use Lambda for a managed function response
A Lambda destination can invoke a function in response to a selected S3 event. Treat that invocation as the start of processing, not proof that the full business operation is complete. If processing must outlast or survive the function’s immediate work, design the downstream handoff and retry handling accordingly.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse EventBridge when rules and routing matter
S3 can publish events to EventBridge, which can apply event rules and route to configured targets. AWS reports EventBridge typical latency of about half a second and notes that it can vary. This figure describes EventBridge’s typical latency, not the complete S3-upload-to-consumer pipeline, and should not be presented as a subsecond end-to-end guarantee. See AWS EventBridge FAQs (accessed October 9, 2026).

AWS distinguishes best-effort from durable delivery according to the event source; durable means at-least-once attempts to deliver to EventBridge. After an event reaches EventBridge, target retry settings and an optional dead-letter queue influence delivery to the target. These stages should be monitored separately from storage notification delivery. See EventBridge retry policy.
SNS, SQS and Lambda destinations have same-Region constraints in the S3 notification configuration. Confirm the current requirements for the particular source, destination and account before selecting a topology. See S3 notification destination requirements.
Google Cloud: publish Cloud Storage notifications to Pub/Sub
Google Cloud Storage can publish object notifications to Pub/Sub. Google documents at-least-once delivery and says notifications are typically delivered within seconds, but explicitly states there is no delivery-time SLA and substantial delays can occur. Notification ordering is not guaranteed. These are provider statements, not independent measurements. See Cloud Storage Pub/Sub notifications (Google Cloud documentation, accessed October 9, 2026).
Use Pub/Sub when its delivery and consumer model fits the workload, but do not treat “typically within seconds” as a deadline. Measure the full upload-to-completion path in the target project and region, and make consumers safe to retry. If a consumer changes an object in response to a notification, use generation and metageneration preconditions so its write does not silently apply to an unexpected object state. See Cloud Storage generation and metageneration preconditions.

Plan for duplicates, reordering and changing object state
Both providers’ notification patterns require consumers to tolerate at-least-once delivery. A message may be delivered more than once, and object events are not globally ordered. Correctness therefore belongs in the consumer design, not in an assumption that each event arrives once and in upload order.
Make each operation idempotent
Choose a durable idempotency key that represents the work being done. A useful basis is the bucket plus object key plus object version or generation, where available. Persist completion against that key so retrying the same event does not repeat an irreversible action, such as creating duplicate downstream records or triggering the same external operation twice. If the required object version is not available or enabled, define how the consumer distinguishes repeated work from a genuinely new change.
Handle ordering at the object level
S3 does not guarantee notification order. For S3 PUT and DELETE events, the notification includes a sequencer; compare sequencer values for the same object key when maintaining an index or other state that must reflect the latest event. Do not compare values across different keys as if they established a global order. Google Cloud Storage notifications likewise do not guarantee ordering, so a consumer must not assume that arrival order represents change order. See S3 event message structure and Cloud Storage Pub/Sub notifications.

An event reports that an operation occurred; it does not ensure that the object remains unchanged by the time a worker reads it. If the consumer needs the exact version associated with the event, track and retrieve the relevant version or generation where the service and configuration support it. If the consumer writes to a Cloud Storage object based on a notification, generation and metageneration preconditions help prevent the write from applying to a state different from the one the consumer expected. See Cloud Storage preconditions.

Parse the event defensively
S3 notifications are JSON, and the maximum message size is 64 KB. The S3 test notification has a different structure from ordinary event records, so do not assume every delivered message is a regular object-event record. Event schemas can evolve; consumers should tolerate supported version changes rather than fail on a harmless change in a supported schema. See S3 event message structure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Filter triggers and prevent event loops
Configure notifications for only the object changes the consumer needs. Where supported, key prefixes and suffixes can limit irrelevant traffic—for example, a handler intended to process incoming files can be scoped to an input prefix rather than all objects in a bucket. Filtering can reduce unnecessary work, but it does not replace validation in the consumer.
Watch for recursive triggers. If a handler writes its output back to a bucket that triggers the same handler, the new write can cause another invocation. Restrict the trigger to an input prefix and write outputs outside that prefix, or use a separate output bucket. Confirm that the filter actually excludes the handler’s outputs. AWS documents this risk for S3-triggered processing. See S3 notification filtering and S3 notification event types and destinations.

- Set the completion objective. Decide what “low latency” means for your workload: event arrival, consumer start, or successful completion. Establish whether the target is an operational goal or a hard service-level objective. The provider behavior described above does not establish a hard end-to-end deadline.
- Select the event types and scope. Identify the object changes that should trigger processing and apply available prefix or suffix filters. Document which objects and operations are intentionally excluded.
- Choose the transport for the workload. Decide whether you need worker buffering, multiple subscribers, event-rule routing or a managed function. Check provider constraints such as supported destinations and same-Region requirements before wiring the path.
- Define the event-to-object mapping. Specify how the consumer will identify the bucket and key and, where supported, the object version or generation. Treat the event as a signal and verify the object state needed for the operation.
- Make the consumer safe before enabling production traffic. Implement durable idempotency, handling for duplicates, and a policy for out-of-order events. For S3 PUT and DELETE events that update per-object state, account for the sequencer. For Cloud Storage writes based on notifications, use generation and metageneration preconditions.
- Configure failure handling. Decide how failed messages are retried, how long they remain available, and how operators will inspect or redrive messages that cannot be processed. Where applicable, configure target retry behavior and a dead-letter queue; do not assume those settings cover failures earlier or later in the pipeline.
- Test end to end in the target environment. Upload representative objects and measure through successful consumer completion. Include concurrent changes to the same key, duplicate handling, delayed processing and consumer downtime in the test plan. A notification-service latency figure alone cannot validate the whole path.
- Instrument and operate the system. Track event age, queue depth, retries, dead-letter volume, handler duration and time from object creation to successful completion. Use these signals to distinguish slow notification delivery from a backlog or a slow consumer.
Decide whether the design meets the latency need
Native notifications are usually the practical trigger when an object change should start downstream processing quickly. They are a better fit than frequent polling when the application needs to react to changes without repeatedly checking storage. However, the documented behavior is seconds-level typical delivery, not guaranteed completion within seconds.
If a requirement is a strict deadline, evaluate the full service path under the conditions that matter to the workload and confirm that the provider contract actually supports the required objective. The documentation cited here does not establish a hard end-to-end latency SLA for either storage-notification path. Design a fallback or escalation policy for work that exceeds the application’s acceptable age rather than treating a typical figure as a bound.
Latency is only one decision axis. Compare queue retention and replay needs, fan-out, consumer count and type, ordering requirements, filtering, cross-provider boundaries, operational ownership and service costs. A transport that is marginally faster in one stage can still be a worse overall choice if it lacks the buffering, routing or failure handling the workload needs.
