You can delete an individual conversation, clear all conversations, or delete your entire account in ChatGPT and Claude. Those actions are different from archiving a chat, disabling model-improvement use, starting a Temporary Chat, or removing a separately stored file. Choose the narrowest action that meets your privacy goal, then verify other data locations before you confirm.
The instructions below describe the consumer interfaces available on October 13, 2026. Labels can differ by device, account type, app version, or an administrator-managed workspace, so use the current Settings labels shown in your account if they are different.
Decide what you actually need to remove
“Delete my history” can mean several different things. Selecting the wrong control may hide a conversation without deleting it, or change future model-use settings while leaving existing chats untouched.

If your goal is simply to remove sensitive text from the sidebar, archiving may be enough. If you need the conversation removed from the account, use Delete. If you no longer want the service at all, account deletion is a separate, broader step.

Before you delete anything
- Export needed information. A deleted conversation cannot be recovered through ChatGPT, and account deletion removes access to saved chats in Claude. Save text, links, or attachments you are entitled to keep before confirming.
- Identify separate data. Check ChatGPT’s Library if you uploaded or created files. A file can remain there after its conversation is deleted.
- Check the account type. Consumer instructions do not establish the retention or deletion rules for Claude Team, Enterprise, API, or other managed accounts.
- Review subscriptions. Claude Pro and Max users should cancel in Billing and wait for the current subscription period to end before deleting the account.
- Use the exact account. If you have multiple sign-ins, confirm the email or profile currently shown before selecting a destructive control.
- Separate privacy goals. Decide whether you are trying to remove a visible chat, stop future model-improvement use, remove a file, or close the service account. You may need more than one control.
How to delete ChatGPT conversations
Delete one ChatGPT conversation
- Open ChatGPT and display your chat history.
- Locate the conversation you want to remove.
- Open that conversation’s more-options menu.
- Select Delete.
- Review the warning and confirm the deletion.
The chat should disappear from the account view immediately. OpenAI says deleted conversations are scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, subject to exceptions for information that has already been de-identified and disassociated from the account or that OpenAI must retain longer for security or legal obligations.
Deletion is permanent from the user’s perspective. ChatGPT and OpenAI Support cannot restore a deleted conversation, so do not confirm until you have copied anything you need. If you are unsure about a specific chat, archive it first rather than using Delete.
Delete every ChatGPT conversation
- Open Settings.
- Go to Data controls.
- Choose Delete all chats.
- Read the confirmation details, then continue to confirm.
This is a bulk deletion action, not an archive. It applies to the conversations covered by the account’s current controls. A business or school workspace may impose additional retention or administrative rules, so the result can differ from a personal consumer account. Review the confirmation screen carefully: an all-chats action is broader than deleting one selected conversation and cannot be rolled back through ChatGPT.

Archive a ChatGPT conversation instead
Use the conversation’s options menu and choose Archive when you want to remove it from the usual sidebar without deleting the saved chat. Archived conversations remain retained until you delete them or an applicable workspace policy removes them. Archiving is useful for reducing clutter or hiding a chat from casual view, but it does not satisfy a request to erase the conversation. If you later need the chat, use the archived-chat controls to locate it and restore or delete it.
What ChatGPT’s 30-day deletion statement means
OpenAI describes a two-stage process: the deleted chat leaves your account view immediately, then is scheduled for permanent system deletion within 30 days. The 30-day period is a policy limit, not a promise that every record is physically erased at the exact same moment. OpenAI lists two categories of exception:
- Data already de-identified and disassociated from your account may no longer be linkable to you in the same way.
- OpenAI may retain information longer when security or legal obligations require it.
Regular and archived chats remain saved until you delete them or a relevant workspace policy removes them. Therefore, deleting only the conversations you can currently see is not the same as closing the account or removing every other data category. The retention statement applies to ChatGPT conversations; it should not be treated as a promise about Claude or an organization’s separately governed systems.

ChatGPT controls that are not conversation deletion
Turn off “Improve the model for everyone”
In ChatGPT, open Settings > Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone when that control is available for your account. This setting governs whether new conversations are used to improve models; it does not delete existing chats and does not hide them from your history. Account type and workspace administration can change which data controls you see.

If you need old conversations removed, delete those conversations separately. Do not treat the model-improvement switch as an eraser. Conversely, deleting a chat does not by itself explain or change the setting for future conversations; check the switch separately if limiting future use is also part of your goal.
Use Temporary Chat for future conversations
Temporary Chats do not appear in normal chat history while they remain temporary and do not create or update memories during that period. OpenAI says it may retain a copy for safety for up to 30 days. Saving a Temporary Chat converts it into a regular chat governed by your account settings.
Temporary Chat is a forward-looking choice. It does not convert an existing regular conversation into an automatically deleted one. Before sharing sensitive material, verify that the Temporary indicator is active; choosing a normal chat and trying to change the setting afterward does not provide the same treatment.
Delete files from ChatGPT Library separately
If you uploaded a document or generated a file, inspect Library after deleting the related conversation. OpenAI explicitly states: “Deleting a chat does not delete a file saved separately in Library.” Delete the Library copy as a separate action if your goal includes removing that file. This is an easy step to miss because the file may no longer be visible in the conversation even though its Library entry remains.

Anthropic’s consumer Claude instructions cover individual and multiple conversations. They are separate from the process for deleting a Claude account. Menu names can move as Claude’s web or app interface changes, so look for the conversation title and the Chats sidebar if your layout differs.

Delete one Claude conversation
- Open the conversation in Claude.
- Click the conversation name at the top.
- Choose Delete.
- Confirm when Claude asks you to proceed.
Anthropic’s personalization guidance says deleting a prior chat is currently the way to ensure it will not be included when Claude uses conversation search. That is a specific personalization consequence; it does not establish a universal system-retention period for every deleted consumer conversation. If you only want a cleaner list and may need the chat later, do not assume Delete is reversible.
Delete multiple Claude conversations
- Open Chats in the left sidebar.
- Select the conversations using the checkboxes that appear.
- Choose Delete Selected.
- Confirm the bulk deletion.
Review the selected list carefully before confirming. Bulk deletion is convenient for clearing history, but it is easier to remove a chat accidentally than when deleting one conversation at a time. If a conversation is missing from the selection list, check that you are in the intended Claude account and workspace before assuming it was already deleted.
How to delete a Claude account
- Sign in to Claude.
- Select your initials or name in the lower-left corner.
- Open Settings > Account.
- Choose Delete Account.
- Follow the confirmation prompts through completion.
Account deletion is permanent and removes access to saved chats. Export data first if you need a copy. If you pay for Claude Pro or Max, open Billing, cancel the subscription, and wait until the current subscription period ends before deleting the account, as Anthropic’s instructions specify. Deleting the account is broader than deleting selected conversations: it ends access to the account, so treat the final confirmation as irreversible.
Anthropic’s consumer guidance does not state an exact retention period or list the exceptions that apply after a deleted conversation. Do not transfer ChatGPT’s 30-day policy to Claude. For Claude Team, Enterprise, or API accounts, ask the organization owner or consult the current commercial policy; consumer instructions do not establish those organizations’ retention rules. An administrator may control retention, exports, or deletion permissions, and a personal-account procedure may not apply.

The practical difference is not just the button’s location. ChatGPT documents a specific 30-day deletion schedule and a separate Library location, while Claude’s consumer guidance focuses on conversation and account controls without publishing an equivalent timeframe. Use each provider’s own wording rather than assuming identical behavior.
When deletion appears not to work
The chat is still visible
- Refresh the page or reopen the app and check the same account.
- Confirm that you selected Delete, not Archive.
- Check whether you are viewing a managed workspace with its own policy.
- Allow for the interface to update, but do not assume continued visibility means the deletion request was cancelled; ChatGPT’s stated process removes a deleted chat from the account view immediately.
- If the wrong conversation was selected, stop and verify the title before repeating a bulk action. Deleted chats cannot be restored in ChatGPT.
You deleted a chat but still see the file
For ChatGPT, inspect Library and delete the stored file independently. Conversation deletion and Library deletion are separate actions. Also check whether you saved a local copy, downloaded attachment, or export outside the service; deleting an online conversation cannot remove copies you stored elsewhere.

You cannot find the deletion control
- Open the conversation itself and inspect its title or more-options menu.
- For ChatGPT, open Settings > Data controls for account-wide options.
- For Claude, open your profile menu and check Settings > Account for account deletion.
- If the account is managed by an employer, school, or team owner, contact that administrator because consumer controls may be limited or relabeled.
- Check that you are not looking at a read-only shared view or a different signed-in profile.
You need proof that data is gone
Save the confirmation screen or email if the service provides one, and note the date and account used. A confirmation does not override stated legal, security, or de-identification exceptions, and Claude’s consumer instructions do not promise a specific deletion deadline. For a managed account, retain the administrator’s written policy or confirmation as well, because organization rules may govern the final disposition.

Does deleting a ChatGPT chat delete an uploaded file?
