Character.AI describes account deletion as permanent and irreversible. If you want to keep a copy of your information, request an export first and wait until you have downloaded it: Character.AI estimates that an export may take 3–4 weeks. You can delete your account on the web or in the mobile app, but the menu labels differ.
It is also important to separate four different actions: downloading an export, deleting your account, making a privacy-rights request, and opting out of data use for model training. The available help-center material does not say that any one of these automatically completes the others.
Before you delete your account
First decide whether you want a copy of your information. Character.AI’s data-export instructions estimate that a request may take 3–4 weeks to process. The download link is emailed to the address associated with the account and is valid for 7 days after the email is sent. Request the export early, retrieve the file, and confirm you can access it before proceeding with an irreversible deletion. The help article does not say that a pending export is guaranteed to finish after an account is deleted.
This sequence matters because an export is a separate request, not a step that happens automatically when you delete an account. If you submit the export and immediately delete the account, the instructions do not establish whether that export will still be processed or delivered. The cautious approach is to wait for the email, download the file during its validity period, and only then decide whether to delete the account.

Deletion is not a way to move your content to another account. Character.AI says users cannot change, update, or remove the email address associated with an account, and that data, characters, and chat histories cannot be transferred between accounts. Opening a new account therefore should not be treated as a backup or migration plan. See the email-address help article for the current limitations.
In practical terms, do not assume that changing accounts will preserve a character or chat history, or that you can later switch the original account to a different email address. The help-center material describes those options as unavailable. If retaining account information is important, use the export function before starting deletion; the documentation does not describe account-to-account transfer as an alternative.
Export your data first, if you want a copy
The export control is available in both web and app settings. Follow the path for the platform you are using; the labels are not identical.

After you submit the request, allow the stated 3–4 weeks for processing. Watch the email account associated with your Character.AI account for the download link, then download the file within its 7-day validity period. Those timings are Character.AI’s estimates and link-expiration terms in its export article, updated October 8, 2026; they are not a guarantee of an individual request’s completion date.
Allowing for that estimate means an export-first plan can take several weeks before you are ready to delete the account. If you have a date in mind for leaving the service, make the request in advance rather than assuming the file will arrive immediately. Once the link email arrives, the 7-day window begins when it is sent, so do not leave the download until after that period. The article specifies an emailed download link and its validity, but does not provide a different delivery method or a more precise completion promise.
The available source describes an export of your data but does not provide a complete inventory of every type of information in the file or a particular file format. Do not assume that the export is a transferable copy of the account, a migration tool, or a guarantee that all content will be recreated in a new account. Its practical role here is to let you retrieve a copy before taking an irreversible account action.

Delete your Character.AI account
Once you are ready to proceed, use the steps for the platform where you are signed in. Character.AI’s deletion article says, “Account Deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed.” Its instructions were updated October 3, 2024; interface labels may change, so look for the corresponding account or privacy controls if your screen differs.

In the mobile app, the documented control is Remove Account under Profile settings. The different wording does not mean the article is describing two different goals: these are the respective account-deletion paths in Character.AI’s help instructions.
On the web
- Sign in to Character.AI.
- Open Profile, then select Profile Settings.
- Open Account, then Manage Account & Data.
- Select Delete Account and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the request.
In the mobile app
- Open the Character.AI app and go to Profile.
- Tap the settings icon.
- Choose Remove Account and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the request.
The official steps are in Character.AI’s account-deletion help article. The app uses “Remove Account,” while the web instructions use “Delete Account”; they are the respective paths Character.AI provides for account deletion.
Before confirming an on-screen prompt, make sure you are signed in to the account you intend to remove. The listed steps begin from the Profile menu for the signed-in account, and the deletion is described as irreversible. If you are uncertain whether you have exported what you need, stop before completing the deletion and return to the export instructions instead.
If your menus look different, first check that you are following the instructions for the correct platform. The web and app paths are not interchangeable: the web article points to Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data, while the app instructions begin at Profile and use the settings icon. Character.AI notes the help article’s update date, but does not promise that interface labels will remain unchanged indefinitely.
What account deletion does—and what is not specified
Account deletion is the account-level action described by Character.AI’s help center. Its public instructions call deletion permanent, but they do not give a specific backend processing time, a backup-retention schedule, or a complete list of records that may be retained for legal or security reasons. The linked Privacy Policy FAQ describes categories of data collected and how information may be used, but the materials do not establish that every copy disappears immediately after you submit a deletion request. Do not assume a particular erasure date or retention outcome from the account-deletion button alone.

That uncertainty is not the same as evidence that a particular record will be retained, nor do the instructions support a claim that everything is erased instantly. It means the sources do not answer the precise timing and backup questions. If you need an answer about the handling of your particular information, consult the privacy materials applicable to your location or contact Character.AI through the privacy contact it lists.
The FAQ says Character.AI collects information users provide directly, information generated through interactions—including usage data and IP address—and, in some cases, information from third-party services a user connects. It says the service uses information to operate, improve, and personalize the service, including customer support, model improvement, security, and legal compliance. These are general descriptions of data handling, not a user-specific inventory of what will be erased or retained after deletion.
Those categories help explain why “delete my account” and “delete every piece of personal data” are not interchangeable promises in the materials. The account-deletion article documents a way to remove the account; the privacy FAQ describes data categories, uses, and region-dependent rights. It does not supply a record-by-record deletion report or say what happens to every copy in every system. Avoid treating the account button as proof of an immediate, total erasure on a specific date.

Account deletion, privacy-rights requests, and training opt-out are different
If your main goal is to exercise a privacy right concerning personal information, consult the Privacy Policy and the regional disclosure that applies to your location. Character.AI says the rights available depend on region. They may include access, correction, deletion, objection or restriction, and portability. Its disclosure for EEA and UK users describes rights including access, objection, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, withdrawal of consent, and the ability to complain to a supervisory authority. These rights should not be read as applying identically to every user in every country.
The distinction matters when you are choosing what to do. Deleting the account is the action described in the account-deletion help article. A privacy-rights request is a way to ask about or exercise rights described in the applicable privacy materials. The sources do not say that completing account deletion automatically submits every possible rights request, or that asking a privacy question deletes the account. Check the relevant regional disclosure for your situation rather than relying on a general list as if it applied everywhere.
The policy update effective July 1, 2026 says the update “does not remove or reduce your rights, and it does not add new requirements for users.” Check the privacy update and regional disclosures for the terms relevant to your location. For privacy-policy questions, Character.AI lists privacy@character.ai.

Character.AI’s July 2026 update also says users can opt out of personal data being used to train and improve its AI models, with instructions in a separate FAQ. That opt-out is distinct from account deletion. The published materials do not explain whether deleting an account reverses any prior model training, or how a pending opt-out request is handled, so neither outcome should be assumed.

If avoiding future use for model training is your goal, use the separate opt-out instructions referenced in the update rather than assuming account deletion does the same thing. Conversely, an opt-out should not be treated as account removal: the documentation describes them as distinct actions. The sources do not specify whether an opt-out changes information already used in prior training, how long an opt-out takes, or what happens if you submit one while an account-deletion request is pending.
Character.AI’s training-data documentation, updated March 11, 2026, describes varied sources for generative AI systems, including publicly available data, user text and interaction data, internally generated safety and engineering data, synthetic data, and data from commercial agreements. It says the company began collecting and using data for model development in 2021. That company-level description does not establish what happened to a particular person’s data after deletion or whether it can be removed from a trained model.
The 2021 date is the company’s statement about when it began collecting and using data for model development; it is not an individual account’s data-use date or a measure of what any one person contributed. The list of data sources also describes the company’s systems generally. Neither statement answers whether deleting an account removes data from an already-trained model, so do not infer an individual outcome from the training-data documentation.

The main tradeoff is straightforward: deleting promptly ends your ability to use that account, while requesting an export first can preserve a copy but means waiting for the stated processing estimate. Character.AI calls deletion irreversible, and its export article does not guarantee that a pending request will complete after deletion. If keeping a copy matters, the documentation supports the export-first sequence; if it does not, you can proceed to the platform-specific deletion path.

There is no account-transfer option described in the current email help article. Character.AI says account email changes are not available and account data, characters, and chat histories cannot be moved to another account. So the choice is not between deleting now and seamlessly restarting elsewhere with your existing material. Plan around the available export and deletion controls, and do not rely on a new account to carry over content.
