Windows 11 stores System Restore points on protected drives, usually C:. They can help undo a bad driver, update, or software installation, but they also consume space. The standard System Protection window deletes every classic System Restore point on the selected drive; it does not let you choose one point from a list.
Use the graphical method for classic System Restore. Use vssadmin when you need a command-line option, want to remove only the oldest shadow copy, or need to target a specific shadow-copy ID.
Before deleting restore points
- Deleting restore points is permanent. You cannot use those points afterward.
- Deleting points from
C:does not delete points on other protected volumes. - Administrator permission is required. Approve the User Account Control prompt by selecting Yes.
- The System Protection interface deletes all restore points on the selected drive, not an individual point.
If you are trying to free disk space, check which drive is selected before confirming. The Current Usage value for that drive should become 0 bytes after all its restore points are removed.

Delete all System Restore points through System Properties
- Open Start, type Create a restore point, and select Create a restore point from the results.
- In System Properties, open the System Protection tab.
- Under Protection Settings, select the drive whose restore points you want to remove. On most PCs, this is Local Disk (C:) (System).
- Select Configure….
- In the System Protection for [drive] window, select Delete.
- Select Continue to confirm. Approve UAC with Yes if Windows asks for administrator permission.
- Select Close, then select OK in System Properties. Select OK again if the window remains open.
The selected drive’s classic System Restore points are now gone. Repeat the process for each other protected drive if necessary. A restore point stored for D:, for example, is not removed when you delete the points for C:.

Delete restore points with Windows Terminal
Windows 11 includes the Microsoft-supported vssadmin utility. This method requires an elevated terminal:

Important limits of the command-line method
vssadmin delete shadows deletes client-accessible volume shadow copies. It is not restricted to objects created only for classic System Restore. System Restore and other rollback or backup products can share Volume Shadow Copy Service storage, so a broad /all command may remove shadow copies used by other software.
If vssadmin reports:
Snapshots were found, but they were outside of your allowed context.
Those copies are not client-accessible and cannot be deleted with vssadmin. Microsoft directs administrators to use diskshadow for that situation.
System Restore versus Point-in-time restore
Windows 11 also documents a separate feature called Point-in-time restore. It uses VSS, but it is not the same user experience as classic System Restore:
| Feature | Where it is configured | Deletion approach |
|---|---|---|
| Classic System Restore | System Properties / System Protection | Use Configure > Delete, or use a volume-qualified vssadmin command with care |
| Point-in-time restore | Settings > System > Recovery > Point-in-time restore > View or edit | Manage its settings and storage behavior separately; turning it off does not immediately delete existing points |
To open the Point-in-time restore settings, go to Settings > System > Recovery > Point-in-time restore, select View or edit, and approve the UAC prompt with Yes.

Point-in-time restore points are automatically removed when they exceed the configured retention period, when VSS storage reaches its maximum, or when free space reaches or falls below 20 GB. Under storage pressure, older snapshots are removed first. Some VSS failures can remove all restore points.
Turning Point-in-time restore off prevents new points, but existing points remain until retention or disk-space cleanup removes them. If you need to remove classic System Restore points immediately, use the System Protection Delete button or the documented VSS commands.
Do not delete System Volume Information manually
Do not try to remove C:System Volume Information in File Explorer or by taking ownership of the folder. It is a protected system directory, and deleting its contents directly can damage Windows restore and shadow-copy data. Use the supported Delete control in System Protection or the appropriate VSS command instead.
Why the available space may not change immediately
After deleting points, verify the selected drive’s Current Usage value in System Protection. It should show 0 bytes when all restore points for that drive have been deleted. If storage still appears occupied, check whether another protected drive contains its own points, or whether a separate backup or snapshot product is using VSS storage.

FAQ
Can I delete just one System Restore point in the Windows 11 interface?
No. The classic System Protection interface’s Delete button removes all restore points on the selected drive. It does not provide a per-point picker. For a narrower command-line operation, you can delete the oldest client-accessible shadow copy or list shadow-copy IDs and delete a selected ID with vssadmin.
Does deleting C: restore points delete restore points on every drive?
No. Restore points are associated with individual protected volumes. Deleting points for C: does not automatically remove points stored on another protected drive such as D:.
Will turning off System Restore delete existing restore points?
The safest supported way to delete classic points immediately is to select the drive in System Protection, choose Configure…, and select Delete. For the separate Point-in-time restore feature, Microsoft states that turning it off prevents new points but leaves existing points until retention or disk-space cleanup removes them.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is vssadmin delete shadows /all the correct command?
Use the volume-qualified syntax documented by Microsoft, such as vssadmin delete shadows /for=C: /all. The command deletes all client-accessible shadow copies on that volume and may affect shadow copies used by backup or rollback software, not only classic System Restore.
What if vssadmin says snapshots are outside the allowed context?
The shadow copies are not client-accessible, so vssadmin cannot delete them. Microsoft directs administrators to use diskshadow for that case.
The Bottom Line
For the normal Windows 11 cleanup, open Create a restore point, select the protected drive in System Protection, choose Configure… > Delete, and confirm. This removes every classic restore point on that drive. Use vssadmin only when you understand that it operates on VSS shadow copies, which may belong to other backup or recovery software as well.
