Export first if you need a record, then delete the conversations and related data from each provider’s own controls. An export only makes a copy; it does not remove the provider’s copy. The exact menus depend on whether you use a personal, work or school account, your plan, and your device. The instructions below reflect provider documentation checked on October 17, 2026; interface labels and eligibility can change.
Exporting and deleting are different actions
Downloading an archive preserves a copy for you. It does not erase chats, uploads or activity from the service. Google’s Gemini help states this explicitly: “If you download your Gemini Apps activity, it doesn’t delete it from Google’s servers.” Treat every export as a backup step, not a deletion request.
Deletion is also not always instantaneous or universal. Removing a conversation from a visible history list may start a provider’s deletion process while copies remain temporarily in backend systems, safety logs or separately managed features. A training or activity switch controls some future use; it does not necessarily erase data you already sent.

- Conversation deletion: removes selected chats or a history list through the provider’s controls.
- Account deletion: a broader, usually permanent action that can affect subscriptions and all associated data.
- Retention or training controls: change how future activity is stored or used, but are not a substitute for deleting past activity.
Because these actions are separate, the safest sequence is: identify every account and device, export what you need, remove chats and related surfaces, change future-retention settings, and then verify.

Before you start: identify every data surface
Make a short inventory before opening settings. A chatbot conversation may be connected to more than the text visible in the sidebar.
- The personal account, subscription or sign-in method used for the chat.
- A work or school workspace whose administrator controls retention.
- Uploaded documents, images, audio or generated media.
- Saved memory, personalization or profile information.
- Custom assistants, agents, Gems or similar reusable configurations.
- Public or shared links created from a conversation.
- Connected applications or other services that received data.
- Mobile, desktop and web sessions that may show different controls.
Do not assume that deleting one item removes the others. Google says Gemini activity deletion does not remove information saved in other Google services. Deleting a Gemini chat containing a Gem does not delete the Gem, and deleting a shared chat does not necessarily remove its public link.

How to export or delete ChatGPT data
Check which account controls you have
Sign in to ChatGPT and open Settings, then Data controls. The options shown depend on whether you are signed in, the plan attached to the account and any workspace policy. A personal account and an organization-managed workspace should not be treated as the same environment.

- Open ChatGPT and select Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Choose the export or data-download option shown for your account and confirm the request.
- Alternatively, use the OpenAI Privacy Portal and submit a data-export request after verifying the account.
- When the archive arrives, save it in encrypted storage and inspect it before deleting anything from the service.
OpenAI documents self-service exports for signed-in personal Free, Go, Plus and Pro users. Self-service export is unavailable for Business, Enterprise and Healthcare workspaces; ask the workspace owner to handle the request. Some Edu workspaces may permit exports when an administrator enables the feature. If you do not see an export control, that absence can reflect account type or workspace policy rather than a browser problem.

Delete selected chats or all chats
- In the ChatGPT history list, open the menu for the conversation you want to remove and choose the delete command.
- For a bulk removal, open Settings > Data controls and use the control for deleting all conversations, if your account presents it.
- Confirm the warning. Do not close the confirmation dialog until the deletion has been accepted.
OpenAI’s consumer privacy information also describes account deletion. Use that only when you intend to remove the account itself: account deletion is permanent and affects associated data and subscriptions. Export anything you need first, including records that are not visible in the conversation list.
Stop new chats from being used for model improvement
- Open Settings > Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
- Read the resulting notice and keep the setting disabled on each account where you want it applied.
This setting changes future model-improvement use; it does not delete existing conversations. OpenAI states that new conversations may still appear in chat history when model improvement is off. Delete the history separately if your goal is removal rather than training opt-out.
How to export or delete Claude data
Export chats and user information
- Open Claude in a web browser or in Claude Desktop.
- Open Settings and select Privacy.
- Choose the export option and submit the request.
- Wait for Anthropic’s email containing the download link, then save the archive securely.
Claude’s iOS and Android apps cannot initiate this export. Use the web app or desktop application even if you normally chat on a phone. Anthropic does not state a fixed availability period for the emailed link in the cited help, so download it promptly rather than assuming it will remain active.

The export is a record for your use, not a one-click migration package. Anthropic says it cannot be imported into another personal Claude account and does not support migration between personal accounts.

Delete conversations
- Open the conversation history in Claude’s web or desktop interface.
- Use the conversation menu to choose the delete action.
- Confirm the deletion and repeat for any other conversations you want removed.
For consumer Claude, Anthropic says a deleted conversation is removed from the history view immediately and automatically deleted from its backend within 30 days. That 30-day period is a Claude-specific operational statement, not a universal chatbot rule.
Delete the Claude account
Use the account-deletion control only if you want to close the account rather than clean up selected chats. Anthropic describes account deletion as permanent. Export needed information before confirming, because a later recovery or personal-account migration is not supported.
How to delete or export Gemini activity
Delete all, a range, a day or one item
- Open Gemini settings and go to the Gemini activity controls, or open Google My Activity and select the Gemini activity area.
- Choose the scope you need: all activity, a custom date range, a particular day or one activity item.
- Review the selected entries and confirm deletion.
- Repeat the check in related Google services if the conversation included files, links or other content stored outside Gemini.
Deleting Gemini activity does not delete data saved in other Google services. A conversation that referenced a Gem or was shared publicly also needs separate review: deleting the chat does not necessarily delete the Gem, and deleting the chat does not necessarily remove its public link.
Export Gemini chats, uploads and Gems with Google Takeout
- Open Google Takeout while signed in to the relevant personal account.
- For Gems, select Gemini.
- For chat activity, generated media and uploads, select My Activity and then Gemini Apps.
- Continue through the Takeout delivery and file-format choices, then create the export.
- Open the emailed download link within seven days and store the archive securely.
The seven-day window applies to the emailed Takeout download link. Exporting does not remove the original activity from Google’s servers, so perform deletion separately after checking the archive.

Choose an automatic-deletion period
- Open Gemini activity settings or the relevant Google My Activity controls.
- Find the auto-delete period for Gemini Apps Activity.
- Choose the period that fits your needs: the default is 18 months, with alternatives of 3 months, 36 months or indefinite retention.
- Save the setting and verify that it is applied to the correct account.
These are Google’s documented options in the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub updated September 24, 2026. Activity already reviewed by human reviewers is a separate exception and may be retained for up to three years. Google states: “If you delete your activity, past chats already reviewed by service providers aren’t deleted because they aren’t connected to your Google Account.”
Turn Keep Activity off
- Open Gemini’s activity controls.
- Turn Keep Activity off and confirm the change.
- Read the notice about service retention and feedback before leaving the page.
With Keep Activity off, future chats do not appear in Activity and are not used to train Google’s AI models, subject to feedback-related exceptions. Google still retains those chats for 72 hours for service delivery, feedback processing and safety. Turning the setting off also does not remove activity that was already reviewed by human reviewers; that data may remain for up to three years.
Work and school Google accounts
A Google Workspace administrator may control Gemini retention and activity settings for a work or school account. You may be unable to change or even inspect the effective policy. If a control is missing, ask the administrator which retention, export and deletion process applies instead of assuming your personal-account steps failed.
What to do when deletion appears incomplete
The chat disappeared, but related content remains
Check memory or personalization, uploaded files, generated media, custom assistants or Gems, connected applications and shared links individually. A conversation list is only one surface. For Gemini, specifically inspect other Google services, the Gem itself and any public link.

You cannot find an export button
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account that owns the data.
- Switch to the web or desktop interface when a mobile app cannot initiate export, as with Claude.
- Check whether a workspace owner or administrator must submit the request, as with ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Healthcare workspaces and some managed education accounts.
- Verify that a browser profile or single-sign-on session has not opened a different account.
The download email never arrives
- Check spam, quarantine and organizational mail filters.
- Confirm the email address associated with the account.
- Do not assume that a delayed link means the export failed; use the provider’s current privacy or support process to check status.
- For Gemini Takeout, remember that the link is available for seven days once delivered.
You disabled training but old chats are still visible
That is expected for ChatGPT’s documented control: turning off model improvement prevents new conversations from being used for training but does not automatically hide them from history. Delete the conversations separately if you want them removed from the visible list.
You need proof that cleanup occurred
Save the export request confirmation, deletion confirmation and the date you changed retention settings. After the provider’s stated period, sign out and check the account again from a separate session. Evidence of a disappeared sidebar item is not proof that every related copy, reviewed record or linked-service item was deleted; record those surfaces separately.
A reliable cleanup sequence
- Map accounts: list personal, work and school identities, plus web, desktop and mobile use.
- Inventory related data: include chats, files, media, memory, Gems or custom assistants, shared links and connected services.
- Export: request the provider archive and download it before deleting anything.
- Review the archive: confirm that the material you need is present and protect the copy.
- Delete conversations: remove individual items or the full history using the provider’s controls.
- Remove separate surfaces: handle account deletion, memory, public links, Gems, uploads and linked services where applicable.
- Set future controls: disable model-improvement use, turn off activity retention or select an auto-delete period.
- Verify authority: ask a workspace or Google Workspace administrator to confirm organization-managed retention.
- Document the result: keep confirmations and the dates on which each action was completed.
Limits of these instructions
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini publish different controls, timing and exceptions. Their workflows should not be copied onto another chatbot without checking that provider’s current official documentation. Labels, eligible plans, administrator policies and retention terms can change, so compare the live settings page with the account type you are actually using before confirming an irreversible deletion.
