Use hideObject, not deleteVehicle, for a building that was already part of the terrain. Find the structure’s map ID in Eden Editor, resolve that ID with nearestObject, and hide the returned object. deleteVehicle is for objects placed in the mission or created while the mission runs; it does not remove Arma 3’s map-native terrain buildings.

Choose the method from the building’s origin

Arma 3 presents two different kinds of objects that can look identical in game:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Terrain buildings: houses, warehouses and other structures baked into the island. They exist as part of the map rather than as mission entities.
  • Mission objects: items placed in Eden Editor or spawned by scripts during the mission.

The command you need depends on that origin. The following table is the quickest decision guide.

What you want to remove Correct operation How you identify it Result
A building already present on the island [0,0,0] nearestObject BUILDING_ID, then hideObject true Eden Editor map ID Hidden from the mission; the terrain object is not destroyed
An object placed in Eden Editor deleteVehicle _object Object reference or variable name Mission object is deleted
An object spawned by a script deleteVehicle _object Reference returned by the creation command Runtime object is deleted
A vehicle with occupants Delete occupants with deleteVehicleCrew, then delete the vehicle Vehicle object reference Avoids crew-related bugs and ghost objects

“Delete” is therefore slightly misleading for a map building. The supported terrain workflow makes the structure invisible by hiding its object representation. You can later reverse that state with hideObject false if your mission needs the building again.

Hide one terrain building by its Eden map ID

For one known structure, the essential code is:

private _building = [0,0,0] nearestObject 1117336;
_building hideObject true;

1117336 is only an example. Replace it with the ID displayed for your target building in Eden Editor. The position [0,0,0] is used as the search origin because the numeric map ID identifies the object; the returned object is the one on which hideObject operates.

What each line does

  • private _building creates a local script variable so the object reference does not leak into other code.
  • nearestObject resolves the numeric terrain ID to an Arma object. Without that lookup, you do not have an object reference to pass to hideObject.
  • hideObject true hides the resolved building. It does not turn the terrain model into a mission-created object and does not make deleteVehicle applicable.

If the ID is wrong, the lookup may return a different object or no useful target. Recheck the value in Eden and test with a client connected to the dedicated server.

Find the building ID in Eden Editor

  1. Open the mission in Eden Editor.
  2. Enable the editor’s map IDs display.
  3. Zoom in until the target building is unambiguous.
  4. Record the numeric ID shown for that structure.
  5. Use the number in the nearestObject expression, replacing the example value.

Do not confuse an Eden object’s variable name with a terrain map ID. A map-native house may not have a mission variable at all; its displayed map ID is what the lookup requires.

Use an Eden helper object when you want an editor-only setup

A convenient way to test the change is to place a small helper object near the building and put the expression in that helper’s initialization field. The following pattern combines hiding with simulation and damage settings:

this enableSimulation false;
this allowDamage false;
delh = [0,0,0] nearestObject HIEROBJEKTID;
delh hideObject true;

Replace HIEROBJEKTID with the recorded numeric ID. The variable name delh is arbitrary; you can use a private variable in a script if you do not need the reference elsewhere.

Which lines are essential?

The removal effect comes from resolving the ID and calling hideObject true. enableSimulation false prevents the helper object from running its simulation, and allowDamage false protects that helper from damage. Those two lines are useful for the helper setup but are not what hides the terrain building.

Preview and then test on the server

  1. Use Eden’s Preview function to confirm that the target disappears and that the ID points to the intended structure.
  2. Start the mission on the dedicated server.
  3. Connect a client and inspect the same location from the client’s view.
  4. Check nearby collision, pathing and mission triggers, because hiding the model does not automatically redesign every gameplay system that referenced the location.

The editor workflow demonstrates disappearance in Preview, but a Preview result alone does not establish persistence or identical behavior under every dedicated-server framework. Treat the connected-client test as the authoritative check for your deployment.

Why deleteVehicle does not remove a map house

The official deleteVehicle command reference limits the command to objects inserted in the mission editor and objects created during gameplay. A terrain building is neither of those: it is part of the island’s scenery. Calling deleteVehicle on a terrain object therefore does not provide the supported way to remove it.

This is the common failure pattern:

_house deleteVehicle;

If _house refers to a map-native building, changing syntax, running the line from another client, or wrapping it in a loop will not turn that terrain object into a deletable mission object. Resolve the map ID and hide the object instead.

When deleteVehicle is the right command

Use it for an object that your mission owns, such as an editor-placed crate or a vehicle returned by a spawn command:

// Mission-created object
_myObject deleteVehicle;

// Array form
{ deleteVehicle _x } forEach _objects;

The command accepts an array through iteration, so you can remove a collection of known mission objects. Keep the collection limited to objects your mission created or placed.

Delete vehicle crew separately

For a vehicle that still has occupants, remove the crew first:

deleteVehicleCrew _vehicle;
deleteVehicle _vehicle;

The official reference warns that deleting crew with deleteVehicle can leave bugs or ghost objects. This warning concerns mission vehicles and their occupants; it does not make deleteVehicle suitable for terrain scenery.

Remove mission objects inside a trigger area

If your goal is an area cleanup rather than one terrain building, a community pattern uses nearestObjects with the trigger’s position and radius:

{
    deleteVehicle _x
} forEach (nearestObjects [thisTrigger, ["all"], (triggerArea thisTrigger) select 0]);

This is a starting pattern, not a safe “erase everything” switch. The ["all"] selector can find players, vehicles, mission objects and scenery. Before executing it on a live server:

  • Filter out players and any objects that must survive the cleanup.
  • Keep protected mission objects in a separate exclusion list.
  • Use it only for mission-created objects; do not pass terrain scenery to deleteVehicle.
  • Account for vehicles with crew by using deleteVehicleCrew before deleting the vehicle.
  • Test the radius and trigger position in a copy of the mission so an oversized area cannot remove unintended entities.

For a terrain building, an area scan is unnecessary. The map ID gives you a precise target and avoids treating the island’s scenery as a mission-owned object.

Multiplayer locality: preview is not the whole test

Locality determines where Arma applies an object’s state. Bohemia Interactive’s multiplayer locality documentation classifies terrain objects such as buildings as local everywhere. Editor-placed objects and empty vehicles are local to the server. That difference matters when the same code appears to work in a local Preview but behaves differently in a dedicated session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Terrain objects

A terrain building is available as a terrain object on each machine, so use the ID lookup and hide operation in the mission context that your server framework expects. Then verify the visual result from an actual connected client rather than relying on the host’s screen.

Editor objects and empty vehicles

These are server-local according to the locality reference. Put their deletion logic where the server owns the object, or the command may not affect the authoritative entity.

allowDamage is local state

allowDamage has its own locality requirements and changes only the local object state. Setting it on a client does not prove that the server has the same setting. If you use the helper-object example, test the resulting behavior on the dedicated server and on a connected client.

Troubleshooting checklist

The building is still visible

  • Confirm that the target is a terrain building rather than an Eden-placed duplicate.
  • Re-enable map IDs and verify every digit of the ID.
  • Check that the code actually ran by placing it in the helper object’s initialization field or in a server-start script that your framework executes.
  • Join as a client on the dedicated server; a local Preview result is not sufficient evidence for the deployed mission.

The wrong object disappeared

  • Zoom in further in Eden before recording the ID.
  • Make sure you did not copy the ID of an adjacent prop, road object or another building.
  • Use a distinct helper location and test one ID at a time.

deleteVehicle appears to do nothing

  • Determine whether the object is map-native. If it is, replace the deletion attempt with nearestObject plus hideObject true.
  • If it is mission-created, confirm that your variable contains the actual object reference and that the command runs where the object is local.
  • If it is a vehicle with occupants, remove its crew first with deleteVehicleCrew.

The building is hidden in Preview but returns on a later run

Check where the hide code is stored and whether that initialization path runs every time the mission starts. The cited editor workflow demonstrates hiding during Preview but does not promise persistence behavior for every server framework. Put the command in the mission’s reliable startup path and retest from a connected client after a fresh server start.

Hide versus delete: operational trade-offs

Criterion Hide a terrain building Delete a mission object
対象 Map-native terrain buildings Eden-placed or runtime-created objects
Command nearestObject followed by hideObject true deleteVehicle
Scope Usually one known map ID, though the code can be repeated for several IDs One reference or an explicitly filtered collection
Reversibility Yes; use hideObject false on the same object reference Normally no; recreate or respawn the object if needed
Main risk Incorrect ID or code not running in the deployed startup path Deleting protected entities, players, crew or unintended objects

Choose hiding when you are altering the appearance of an island location and may want to restore it. Choose deletion when your mission owns the object and its lifecycle should end.

A safe implementation pattern

For a single terrain building, keep the implementation explicit and easy to audit:

private _buildingId = 1117336;
private _building = [0,0,0] nearestObject _buildingId;
_building hideObject true;

For several known buildings, repeat the operation with a controlled list of IDs rather than scanning the whole map:

private _buildingIds = [1117336, 1117337];
{
    private _building = [0,0,0] nearestObject _x;
    _building hideObject true;
} forEach _buildingIds;

Use only IDs you have verified in Eden. This preserves the distinction between terrain editing by ID and mission-object cleanup by reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Key points to retain

  • deleteVehicle removes mission-editor and runtime-created objects; it is not the terrain-building removal command.
  • For an existing island building, obtain its Eden map ID, resolve it with nearestObject, and call hideObject true.
  • The helper-object expression may also disable simulation and damage on the helper, but those lines are not required to hide the building.
  • Preview the mission, then validate the result on the dedicated server with a connected client.
  • Locality differs: terrain objects are local everywhere, while editor-placed objects and empty vehicles are server-local.
  • When cleaning an area, filter players and protected objects and never treat terrain scenery as a normal deleteVehicle target.
