Deleting an AI chat is only one part of removing your data. Conversation history, saved memory, model-improvement activity, connected-app data, and account records are usually controlled separately. To make a clean break, export anything you need, delete the relevant conversations, clear saved memories, disconnect connected apps, and then disable future activity or personalization. The exact sequence differs between ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot.
History, memory, and training are different controls
Most AI services keep several kinds of information. Treating them as one setting is the main reason people think they deleted data when they have only hidden it.
- Conversation history is the list of chats you can open again. Deleting a chat normally removes it from the visible account view; archiving merely moves it out of the main list.
- Saved memory or personalization is a separate profile of facts, preferences, or instructions the service may use in later chats. Deleting the conversation that supplied a fact does not necessarily remove a separately saved memory.
- Model-improvement or training activity determines whether future conversations may be used to improve the provider’s models. Turning this off generally affects future use, not records that already exist.
- Connected-app and uploaded-file data can have their own retention rules. A chat may refer to information from a storage, mail, calendar, or other integration even after the original conversation is removed.
- Account and safety records can remain for a limited period after deletion because providers need to complete deletion, investigate abuse, or meet legal obligations.
Use the service’s delete command for history, its memory or personalization controls for remembered facts, and its privacy or activity controls for future collection and model improvement. If you need the information later, export it before deleting anything.
Prepare before you delete
- Decide what must be preserved. Save prompts, responses, project files, or account records that you are allowed to keep. An export is preferable to copying a few visible messages because it can include account information and chat history.
- Identify the account type. Personal accounts normally expose the controls described below. A work, school, team, enterprise, or healthcare account may be governed by an administrator instead.
- List every place the information may exist. Include ordinary chats, archived chats, saved memories, uploaded files, libraries, custom instructions, connected applications, and other devices signed in to the same account.
- Delete the source and the derived record. If a provider says it created a memory from a chat, remove both the saved memory and the chat. If a connected app supplied the information, remove the relevant chat and disconnect the app.
- Turn off future collection only after deciding whether you still need the service. Disabling activity or personalization does not automatically erase old records.
ChatGPT: delete chats, clear memory, and limit future use
Delete or archive individual conversations
For a particular conversation, open its options menu and choose Delete or Archive. Archive is not deletion: the chat leaves the regular sidebar but remains saved and searchable. Choose Delete when the conversation itself must be removed.

A deleted conversation disappears from the account view immediately, cannot be restored, and is scheduled for permanent system deletion within 30 days. OpenAI lists exceptions for data that has already been de-identified and disassociated or that must be retained for security or legal reasons.
Delete or archive all conversations
Open Settings > Data controls. The controls there let you archive all chats or delete all chats. Use the all-chat command only after checking that you do not need any of the conversations; deletion is irreversible in the product.
Remove saved memories separately
Open Settings > Personalization > Memory and review the memory controls available to your account. To remove a fact completely from the places ChatGPT can use, delete the saved memory and the chat in which you shared it. Also review regular and archived chats, Library files, and connected apps for copies or references to the same information.
Deleting only the chat does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory. OpenAI may retain logs of deleted memories for up to 30 days for safety and debugging, so a memory disappearing from the interface is not a promise of instantaneous backend erasure.
Stop future model-improvement use
The Improve the model for everyone setting controls model-improvement use; it is not a history-deletion command. Switch it off if you do not want eligible future conversations used in that way, but delete existing chats separately.
For a conversation that should not appear in history or create or update memories, start a Temporary Chat. Temporary chats are not used to improve models while they remain temporary. OpenAI may keep a copy for safety for up to 30 days.

Delete the account
Account deletion is permanent. OpenAI says account data is deleted within 30 days, subject to a limited legal-retention exception. If you pay through Apple or Google, cancel that mobile subscription separately; deleting the OpenAI account does not cancel the store-billed subscription. Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces may require help from the organization that manages the account.

Delete a conversation
On Claude for the web, open the conversation list, use the conversation’s menu, select Delete, and confirm. The conversation disappears from history immediately. Anthropic says it is deleted from backend systems within 30 days.
Deleting a conversation does not automatically remove other associated account data. Projects and account information remain until you delete them separately or delete the account.
Export before deletion
Individual Free, Pro, and Max users can request an export of account information and chat history from Settings > Privacy on the web or Claude Desktop. The export feature is not available in the Claude iOS or Android apps. For Team and Enterprise accounts, export access is limited to the organization’s Primary Owner. Anthropic’s help page carrying this guidance is dated July 8, 2026.
Gemini Apps: manage activity, memory, and connected apps
Delete Gemini activity
Open Gemini Apps Activity from the web or app settings, or open the Gemini activity page while signed in. You can remove one activity item, a day, a custom date range, or all activity. These choices delete selected activity; they do not change other Google services’ independent records.
Choose an automatic deletion period
For personal accounts, Keep Activity is on by default for adults. Gemini activity older than 18 months is auto-deleted by default. The available personal-account choices are 3 months, 18 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention.

Turn off future activity
Turn off Keep Activity in Gemini Apps Activity when you do not want new activity saved under that setting. Turning it off does not remove prior activity. Google says conversations may remain associated with the account for up to 72 hours for service provision and feedback even after Keep Activity is disabled.
Account for human-review retention
Google’s Gemini Privacy Hub says chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data are not deleted when you delete activity and may be retained for up to three years. This is a retention exception, not a setting you can shorten by repeatedly deleting the same activity. Other Google services may retain their own data under their own rules.
Switch off past-chat memory
On desktop, open Settings & help > Personal Intelligence and switch off Gemini’s past-chat memory. To remove information Gemini remembered, delete the relevant chats as well. A memory control and a chat-deletion control address different stores of information.

If Gemini learned the information from a connected app, delete the relevant Gemini chats and disconnect that app. Google notes that deleting or updating the source data can take days to affect Gemini, so a change in the source application is not necessarily reflected immediately.
Work and school accounts
Some Gemini activity controls may be unavailable for work or school accounts because a Google Workspace administrator manages them. If a setting is missing, the account administrator may need to change the policy or perform the deletion.
Microsoft Copilot: separate personalization, history, and training choices
Clear memory without deleting visible history
Consumer Copilot distinguishes memory and personalization from conversation history. Turning off personalization and memory makes Copilot forget saved memories, but old conversations can remain viewable. Delete the history separately if those conversations must disappear.

Control training activity separately
Microsoft provides separate privacy choices for training on conversation activity and voice conversations. Review those choices in the privacy settings rather than assuming that a history-delete command changes model-training eligibility.
Use the current app labels
Microsoft’s privacy-controls page describes an older version of the Copilot app and directs users of the updated web, desktop, and mobile experience to newer guidance. Microsoft states that the updated version became available on August 18, 2026. Because menu names can differ by version, follow the labels shown in your current Copilot interface instead of treating an older path as universal.
Do not confuse consumer Copilot with Microsoft 365 Copilot
Microsoft says prompts, responses, and file contents used in Microsoft 365 apps are not used to train foundation models. That statement applies to Microsoft 365 Copilot and should not be generalized to consumer Copilot’s separate controls.
Microsoft’s Copilot Privacy FAQ also advises: You shouldn’t provide any confidential or sensitive personal data that you would not want Microsoft to use for purposes explained in this FAQ and in the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

Exporting and storing a copy safely
Export only what you are permitted to retain. Claude provides a documented account-and-chat export through web and Desktop settings, and Google says Gemini users can export their information. ChatGPT’s deletion workflow should likewise be treated as irreversible, so save anything you may need before confirming deletion.

- Use a strong device passcode and encryption.
- Do not place an export in a shared folder unless every recipient is authorized.
- Keep a note of the export date and account it came from.
- Delete duplicate downloads from cloud-sync folders, recycle bins, and old computers when your retention period ends.
Common deletion mistakes and the correct fix
You archived a chat but expected it to be erased
Archive is a visibility feature. In ChatGPT, an archived chat remains saved and searchable. Return to the archived-chat controls and choose Delete if you need actual deletion.
You deleted a chat but the AI still recalls the fact
Check saved memory or personalization. ChatGPT specifically requires deleting the saved memory and the source chat, plus reviewing archives, files, and connected apps. Gemini’s past-chat memory also has a separate switch and may draw on earlier conversations.
You turned off activity and old records are still present
Future-activity controls are not retroactive. Delete existing Gemini activity, Copilot history, or ChatGPT conversations separately. Gemini may still associate conversations for up to 72 hours after Keep Activity is disabled.

You changed source data in a connected app and the AI has not updated
Delete the relevant chat and disconnect the integration. Google says changes to connected source data can take days to affect Gemini.
A work or school account has no delete button
The organization may control retention and activity settings. Contact the administrator or the service’s designated account owner; do not assume that creating a personal account changes the organization’s copy of the data.
You deleted the account but billing continues
For ChatGPT subscriptions billed through Apple or Google, cancel the subscription in the relevant app store separately. Account deletion alone does not cancel that billing relationship.
A practical privacy routine for future AI chats
- Use a temporary or no-history mode for a one-off question when the service provides one.
- Do not enter confidential information that you would not want handled under the provider’s stated privacy terms.
- Review memory and personalization periodically, not only after a privacy incident.
- Set the shortest automatic-delete period that meets your need; Gemini personal accounts offer 3, 18, or 36 months and indefinite retention.
- Disconnect integrations you no longer use and remove chats that contain imported data.
- Export before bulk deletion, then protect or securely destroy the export.
- For organization-managed accounts, ask the administrator which retention policy applies before relying on a personal deletion control.
Bottom line
For a thorough cleanup, handle the controls in layers: export first, delete conversations, clear saved memory or personalization, remove connected-app copies, and then disable future activity or model-improvement use. ChatGPT and Claude describe 30-day backend deletion windows with exceptions; Gemini documents a 72-hour service-association period and up to three years for human-reviewed chats; Copilot separates memory, history, and training controls and varies by app version. No single button guarantees that every copy disappears immediately.
