To permanently reset a 7 Days to Die server, stop it, back up the current files, delete the active save at Saves/<GameWorld>/<GameName>, and delete the matching random-generation terrain folder under GeneratedWorlds/<world name>. Set a new WorldGenSeed or, safer, change GameName, then start the server and wait for the new world to generate.
Decide which kind of reset you need
A world reset can mean either replacing the existing map or creating a fresh save while retaining the old one. Choose before deleting anything because the two methods have different recovery options.

Use the new-name method when you are unsure whether the community will want the old map later. Use a full wipe when disk space matters or the old world must be removed after a verified backup.
What the server considers a world
The save is identified by several values, not by the seed alone. The usual save layout is:

Saves/<GameWorld>/<GameName>Randomly generated worlds also use terrain data in:
GeneratedWorlds/<world name>On a Linux client, generated terrain is commonly found at ~/.local/share/7DaysToDie/GeneratedWorlds/<world-name>/. A server host may use a different root or rename the folders. Some panels place saves under Saves/Saves and generated worlds under Data/Worlds. Treat the host’s actual file tree as authoritative.

To reload a particular existing save, those values must match the values used when it was created. A mismatch can cause the server to create a different world instead.
Before touching files
Stop the server completely
Use the host panel’s Stop control or the server console’s shutdown command, then wait until the process is shown as offline. Do not edit serverconfig.xml, delete folders, or rename a save while the server is running. A live process can keep files open and write changes back after you delete them, leaving a partial or apparently unchanged reset.
Warn connected players
A reset removes the shared world state that players are using. Tell players when the shutdown starts, whether the old world will be retained, and what the new GameName or seed will be. If you are changing only the map but want to keep a community record, copy the old save before proceeding.
Make a restorable backup
Download or copy the complete active save folder and, for a random-generated world, its matching generated-terrain folder. Include the current serverconfig.xml so you know which names, seed, and size were in use. Store the backup outside the server’s live data directory and give it a date-based name. Do not call a file copy a backup until you can see that the folders contain files and the archive can be opened.

Full wipe: replace the existing world
1. Record the active configuration
Open serverconfig.xml only after the server is stopped. Record these entries exactly, including capitalization and punctuation:
GameWorld— the world type or named map.GameName— the save name used belowSaves/<GameWorld>.WorldGenSeed— the random-generation seed.WorldGenSize— the generated map size.
Also check whether UserDataFolder or SaveGameFolder is set. When either is configured, it can override the default location, so the save may not be under the directory you first expect.
2. Locate and back up the save
Follow the configured save path and open Saves. Then open the folder named for the active GameWorld, followed by the folder named for GameName. For example:
Saves/MyWorld/ServerOneCopy the entire ServerOne folder to your backup location. If the panel exposes a compressed-download option, download the archive and verify it locally. If you use a file-transfer client, let the transfer finish before deleting anything.

3. Remove the active save folder
With the server still offline, delete only the folder for the world you intend to reset:
Saves/<GameWorld>/<GameName>Do not delete the whole Saves directory unless you deliberately want to remove every save stored there. If several server instances share a host account, deleting the parent directory can destroy unrelated worlds.

4. Remove random-generation terrain
If GameWorld is a randomly generated map, locate the terrain folder whose name corresponds to that world and delete it as well:
GeneratedWorlds/<world name>Deleting only the save can leave the generated terrain behind. The server may then reuse that terrain, making the reset appear not to have worked. On hosts that use a different layout, the same data may be under Data/Worlds; confirm the folder by opening the host’s documented data tree rather than assuming the default path.
5. Choose a new seed or name
Edit serverconfig.xml and use one of these approaches:
- New seed: replace
WorldGenSeedwith a value that has not been used for this save name. - New save name: replace
GameNamewith an unused name. This creates a separate save and leaves the old one available for recovery. - Both: changing both gives the clearest separation from the previous world, especially after a complicated or failed reset.
A seed change by itself is not always enough. If the resulting world name already exists, the server can load that existing world instead of generating a new one. Changing GameName avoids that collision because the new save directory does not yet exist.
6. Save the configuration without changing unrelated settings
Keep GameWorld and WorldGenSize intentional. If you want the same map dimensions, leave WorldGenSize unchanged. Accidental edits to other settings can create a different server configuration and make troubleshooting harder.
7. Start and wait for generation
Start the server from the host panel. A new random map can take several minutes to generate, especially on the first start after its terrain folder was removed. Keep the server running during this process. Watch the console for world-generation progress, then connect only after the server reports that it is ready.

8. Verify that the reset succeeded
Check the server’s save directory while it is stopped again or through the panel’s file browser. You should see a newly created folder matching the new GameName. For a random map, a corresponding folder should appear under the host’s generated-world location. Join with a test account and confirm that the spawn area and discovered map are new before inviting the entire player group.
Safer reset: change GameName and keep the old world
Changing GameName is the non-destructive route. It does not require deleting the old save, so you can return to it later.
- Stop the server and wait for the process to exit.
- Back up
serverconfig.xmland note the currentGameName. - Choose a new, unused value such as
Season2orMap-2026-10. Avoid a name that already appears underSaves/<GameWorld>. - Change
GameNameinserverconfig.xml. Set a newWorldGenSeedas well if you want a clearly different random map. - Leave the old save folder in place. Do not rename it while the server is offline unless you understand how your host maps names to directories.
- Start the server and allow generation to finish.
- Confirm that a new save folder with the new name was created. If you need the old world later, stop the server and restore the original
GameNamewith the other original values.
This method uses additional disk space and does not remove the old players’ files, but it gives you a straightforward rollback if the new map has a configuration problem.
Why changing only the seed often fails
The server first looks for a save associated with its world and game names. If a folder with the resulting name is already present, it can load that save rather than generate terrain from the new seed. This is the common “seed trap”: the configuration shows a new seed, but players still see the old map.
To avoid it, use a new GameName, or delete both the existing save directory and its generated terrain directory before restarting. Also check for similarly named folders, including names that differ only by capitalization, in hosts whose file systems treat case differently.
Finding the right folders on different hosts
Default-style layouts
In a conventional installation, start at the server’s data directory, then inspect Saves and GeneratedWorlds. The save path follows the two-level pattern Saves/<GameWorld>/<GameName>.

Panel-managed layouts
Managed panels may add an extra directory level, such as Saves/Saves, or store random terrain under Data/Worlds. Use the panel’s file manager to search for the exact GameName shown in serverconfig.xml. If the search finds several copies, check timestamps and the configured UserDataFolder and SaveGameFolder values before deleting anything.

Do not delete the client copy expecting it to reset a remote server.
Recovering when the old world still loads
- Only the seed changed: change
GameNameto an unused value or remove the old save and generated-terrain folders after confirming your backup. - The save was deleted but the map looks familiar: check for a leftover
GeneratedWorldsfolder, or the host’s equivalent underData/Worlds. - No new folder appears: inspect
UserDataFolderandSaveGameFolder; they may redirect data elsewhere. - The server creates an unexpected world: compare
GameWorld,GameName,WorldGenSeed, andWorldGenSizewith the values in your backup. Any mismatch can select or create a different save. - The panel shows files returning after deletion: the server was probably not fully stopped, or an automatic restore job recreated them. Stop scheduled restarts and repeat the operation while the process is offline.
- Players report missing progress: stop immediately and restore the backed-up save before anyone continues playing on the new instance.
Seed files and reproducibility caveats
Guides disagree about where the original seed is recorded after generation. Depending on the game build and installation, check GenerationInfo.txt (the second line is described as Original Seed) and map_info.xml inside the generated-world folder. Treat these files as records to inspect, not as files to edit while the server is running.
Map generation can also change between game builds. A seed that produced one layout on an earlier build may not produce an identical layout after an update. For reliable reproduction, preserve the game version, GameWorld, WorldGenSeed, and WorldGenSize together with the save. The version-dependence warning has been reported by a 2026 secondary guide and is not confirmed here by an official technical specification.
