Teams recordings are usually ordinary files now—not Stream videos. For a standard meeting, the file is normally in the organizer’s OneDrive under Recordings. Channel meetings use the team’s SharePoint site instead.
The quickest deletion method is therefore to open the storage location, select the recording, and delete the file. Your ability to do that depends on who owns the recording and whether it belongs to a channel or event.
Delete a standard Teams meeting recording
Use this procedure for a scheduled Teams meeting that is not associated with a channel.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Teams.
- Select OneDrive from the left-hand app rail. If it is not visible, select More apps (…) and choose OneDrive.
- Select My files.
- Open the Recordings folder.
- Find the recording. Its filename commonly includes the meeting name, date, or organizer.
- Hover over the file and select More actions (…).
- Select Delete, then confirm.
The recording is moved to OneDrive’s recycle bin rather than being immediately and permanently erased.

Who can delete a Teams recording?
For an ordinary meeting, Microsoft identifies the meeting organizer and co-organizers as the people who can download or delete the recording. Being able to watch the video does not automatically give you permission to remove it.
By default, the organizer owns the recording. If you recorded a meeting for someone else, that does not necessarily make you the owner or give you a Delete option.
If the recording is not in OneDrive
Do not assume the file is missing. Its location depends on the meeting type.

Delete a channel-meeting recording
A channel recording is stored in SharePoint, not your personal OneDrive. The location follows this pattern:
Teams name – Channel name/Documents/Recordings
- Open the relevant team and channel in Teams.
- Select the channel’s Files tab.
- Open the SharePoint location, if necessary, by selecting Open in SharePoint.
- Open the Recordings folder.
- Select the recording, choose Delete, and confirm.
SharePoint permissions inherited from the channel determine whether the Delete command appears. A channel owner or SharePoint site owner may be required.

- Versatile: Adjustable-height mic stands adapt to studios, stages, podcasts, and more.
- Durable: Steel-built mic stands with non-slip rubber feet for secure, stable support.
- Compatible: Adjustable boom arms offer 30" reach and standard threading for wide equipment compatibility.
- Portable: Folds flat for easy storage, transport, and convenient travel between setups.
- Precise: Removable boom arm adjusts angle for accurate microphone positioning and optimal sound capture.
What to do when there is no Delete option
Missing Delete is normally a permissions or storage-location issue. Work through these checks:
- Confirm the meeting type. A channel meeting will not appear in your personal Recordings folder.
- Identify the owner. For a normal meeting, ask the organizer or a co-organizer to open OneDrive and remove it.
- Check whether another person recorded a call. A 1:1 or group-call recording belongs in the recorder’s OneDrive.
- Check SharePoint permissions. Channel recordings use the channel’s SharePoint access rules.
- Check whether the file has already been deleted. Search the relevant OneDrive or SharePoint recycle bin.
External attendees generally cannot delete the recording, even if the organizer shared it with them. For meetings with more than 250 participants, some attendees may also need to be added manually to the recording’s sharing list; access to watch is separate from permission to delete.
Restore a deleted Teams recording
If you deleted the wrong file, restore it from the recycle bin:
- In Teams, open OneDrive.
- Select Recycle bin.
- Select the recording.
- Select Restore.
The recording returns to its original location. For a channel recording, use the SharePoint site’s recycle bin instead of your personal OneDrive recycle bin.
Manual deletion versus automatic expiration
Teams can remove a recording automatically according to its expiration policy. This is different from selecting Delete yourself. Watching the recording does not reset or extend its expiration date.

- Adjustable microphone stand designed to hold a microphone securely in place (microphone clip sold separately) at the height you choose
- Long boom arm with molded plastic counterweight; adjust to standing height for singing or speaking or seated height for playing an instrument
- Versatile design folds flat for use as straight mic stand; max height 85.75 inches; base width 21 inches
- Sturdy steel construction; ultra-light for easy transport
- Compatible with 3/8-inch to 5/8-inch adapter; clip-on cable holder keeps cords out of the way
After an expiration, the owner can have up to 90 days to recover the file from the recycle bin. If it is recovered after expiration, it no longer expires automatically. Retention and compliance policies set by an organization can change what users see and how long deleted files remain recoverable.
Deleting the recording does not necessarily delete the transcript
A meeting transcript is a separate artifact. Removing the MP4 recording does not reliably remove every transcript or meeting-related file. If the transcript also needs to be removed, open the meeting’s transcript controls and use Delete there. Organizers and co-organizers can manage transcripts, subject to the organization’s policies and the transcript’s storage location.
Town hall and VOD recordings
A town hall published through Video on Demand can use a SharePoint Embedded File Storage Container rather than the ordinary OneDrive or SharePoint folder workflow. An administrator cannot simply browse to that container and delete the file.
For this type of event, the documented administrator route is:
- Open Teams admin center.
- Go to Analytics and reports → Usage reports.
- Open the View reports tab.
- Under Report, select Teams events usage reports.
- Select the event row.
- Select Delete event data.
This is an administrator workflow, not a normal attendee deletion method.

A recording that failed to upload
If the organizer, co-organizers, and recording initiator do not have usable OneDrive accounts—or the available storage quota is full—Teams can temporarily place the recording in async media storage.
Teams does not automatically retry the upload. The organizer must download the recording, and an uncollected file is deleted after 21 days. If the meeting is important, download a copy as soon as the failed-upload notice appears and store it according to your organization’s retention rules.
Where Teams recordings are stored now
Older guides often say that Teams recordings are saved in Microsoft Stream. That is outdated for ordinary Teams meeting recordings: since the storage change introduced in 2021, they are generally stored in OneDrive for work or school or SharePoint, depending on the meeting type.
There is no PowerShell command required for the normal deletion process. The standard user workflow is performed through Teams, OneDrive, or SharePoint. Administrative commands that block recording downloads do not delete existing recordings.

FAQ
Can I delete a Teams recording if I did not organize the meeting?
Usually not. For a standard meeting, the organizer and co-organizers control deletion. For a channel meeting, the relevant SharePoint or channel permissions control it.

Why is my Teams recording not in OneDrive?
It may be a channel recording stored in SharePoint, a call recorded by another user, a Teams Rooms recording, a shared-mailbox recording, or an event recording stored in a different location.
Can I permanently delete a Teams recording?
Selecting Delete sends it to OneDrive or SharePoint recycle bin. Permanent removal depends on emptying the applicable recycle bin and on any retention or compliance policy enforced by your organization.
Can I recover a deleted Teams recording?
Yes. Open the relevant OneDrive or SharePoint recycle bin, select the recording, and choose Restore. An expired recording may be recoverable for up to 90 days, depending on policy.
Recommended Free Tools
Does deleting a Teams meeting delete its recording?
Not necessarily. The recording is a separate file. Delete it from its OneDrive or SharePoint storage location, and handle the transcript separately if it must also be removed.
Can an external attendee delete the recording?
External attendees do not automatically have deletion rights. The organizer or co-organizer normally needs to manage the file.
The Bottom Line
For most non-channel meetings, go to Teams → OneDrive → My files → Recordings, select the file’s … menu, and choose Delete. If it is not there, check whether the meeting was held in a channel, recorded by another user, or created as a Teams Rooms, shared-mailbox, or town-hall event. When Delete is unavailable, the recording owner or a SharePoint administrator usually needs to remove it.
