To remove a child’s social-media presence, do three separate things: close or delete the account through the platform, send a written data-erasure request for information the platform still holds, and remove the account from the child’s devices. These actions have different effects. Deleting an app or signing out does not close an online account; deactivating an account may hide it without immediately erasing backend records; and a legal erasure request can cover wider data than the account-control screen.
Whether you can act depends on your legal authority, the child’s age and country, the service’s terms, and the child’s maturity. A parent or other holder of parental responsibility may be able to request action, but a capable child’s wishes and objections should be considered rather than automatically overridden.
Decide what “delete” needs to mean
Families often use “delete” for three different operations. Identify the result you need before touching the account.

For the strongest result, use the platform’s account-control option and send a separate written request describing all data you want erased. Then clean the devices.

Check authority, age, country and the child’s wishes
Confirm who is entitled to act
Use the precise term parent or holder of parental responsibility. Parental responsibility normally means the legal rights and responsibilities a parent has for a child; it does not automatically include every adult relative, guardian, or household member. A service may ask for evidence of that relationship or authority.
Rules differ by country and by the child’s age. Some services allow a parent to control an account created for a young child; others require the account holder to make the request or require a parent and child to participate. Do not claim to be the account holder or submit someone else’s identity document. Ask the service which proof it accepts and send only what is necessary through its official channel.
Consider a competent child’s request
UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) guidance says organisations should consider a child’s capacity and wishes. If a child is mature enough to exercise their own rights, a request or objection cannot simply be ignored. Discuss what will be lost, including photos, messages, contacts, purchases and access to linked services. Record the child’s preference and explain any safety reason for urgent action.

Handle parental disagreement carefully
If people with parental responsibility disagree, do not guess which adult has priority. Keep copies of the account details and correspondence, ask the platform what evidence it needs, and obtain advice under the law of the child’s country or residence. A platform’s decision about account access does not settle a family-law dispute.
Preserve anything the child wants to keep

- Photos, videos, stories, saved posts or drafts.
- Direct messages, contact information and group details.
- Receipts, subscriptions, creator payments or other transaction records.
- Two-factor-authentication recovery codes and usernames needed for another service.
Use the platform’s data-download or export feature when available. This is practical preparation, not a universal legal requirement. Save the export in a secure location, protect it like personal data, and do not assume that an export contains every backend record.
Record the exact username, account email address or phone number, profile URL, linked login method and approximate creation date. Take screenshots showing the profile and any deletion or deactivation confirmation. Keep confirmation emails, support-ticket numbers and dates.

Delete or close the account through the platform
- Sign in through the official app or website. Avoid links in unsolicited messages. Verify that you are in the child’s account, not a similarly named profile.
- Open account and privacy settings. Look for labels such as Account ownership, Account management, Deactivate, Delete account or Close account. Labels and menu paths change by country, app version and account type.
- Choose deletion rather than deactivation when permanent removal is intended. Read the screen describing waiting periods, what will be erased and what may be retained. If only deactivation is offered, ask support whether it hides the profile while retaining data and for how long.
- Complete the platform’s checks honestly. You may need the password, a code sent to the account’s email or phone, or evidence that you are the parent or holder of parental responsibility. Do not upload more personal information than the service requests.
- Confirm the final warning. Note the date and time, any scheduled deletion date and the support reference. Save a screenshot or confirmation email before signing out.
- Do not log back in during a cancellation window. Some services treat a login as a request to reactivate. The service’s own notice controls; do not assume every platform uses the same period.
- Check from a separate browser or account. After the stated process, search for the profile while signed out. A missing profile is useful evidence, but it does not prove that every copy or backup has been erased.
Send a separate written erasure request
An account-deletion button may not cover information held in support systems, advertising records, inferred profiles, device logs or data shared with processors. Send a written request through the service’s privacy form, privacy email address or postal address listed in its current privacy notice. Keep a copy of exactly what you submitted.
The ICO says there are no mandatory words. It recommends identifying the requester and account, describing the personal data to erase, and asking for a full response within one calendar month. You may use this official wording exactly:
“I wish to exercise my right of erasure under data protection law.”

Template you can adapt
Subject: Erasure request for [child’s full name] / [username]I am [the child / the child’s parent or holder of parental responsibility]. The account is identified by username [username], profile [profile URL], and registered email or phone [identifier].
“I wish to exercise my right of erasure under data protection law.”
Please erase the account and all personal data associated with it, including profile information, posts, photographs, videos, messages, identifiers, device and location data, inferred profiles, support records and data held by processors or other organisations where the law requires you to notify them. Please tell me which information you erased, any information you must retain and the legal reason for retaining it. If you need evidence of identity or parental responsibility, specify the minimum evidence required. Please provide your full response within one calendar month of receiving the necessary information.
Regards,
[requester’s name and contact details]
Replace the bracketed text before sending; do not include template brackets in the final request. If the child is making the request, say so clearly. If you are acting for the child, explain your authority and ask how to verify it securely.

- Account identifiers, usernames, email addresses, phone numbers and profile URLs.
- Posts, comments, direct messages, stories, live-stream recordings, photographs and videos.
- Contacts, searches, likes, follows, group memberships and interaction history.
- Device identifiers, IP addresses, approximate or precise location records and login history, where held.
- Inferences, audience or advertising profiles and recommendations linked to the child.
- Payment, subscription and support-ticket information, subject to legal retention rules.
- Copies held by processors, hosting providers or other organisations to which the platform disclosed the data.
Ask the organisation to tell you which recipients were notified. ICO guidance says an organisation should tell other recipients about erasure where required and, on request, identify who received the data. This does not mean that every recipient can be compelled to erase information in every jurisdiction; the platform should explain the applicable exception.
Understand verification, deadlines and exceptions
Verification can be legitimate
A service may request enough information to confirm the requester and locate the correct account. The response clock may start when you provide the requested identity or authority evidence. Send redacted documents where possible, use the official secure upload route, and ask how long verification material will be kept.
Erasure is not absolute
The ICO’s plain-language guidance is: “The organisation should delete your data, unless an exemption in data protection law applies.” Examples can include a legal duty to retain records, information needed for legal claims, or another statutory exemption. Ask the platform to identify the specific categories retained and the legal basis, rather than accepting a vague statement that it “keeps some data.”
Separate deletion from backups and public copies
A platform may need time to remove information from backup systems or may retain a restricted record for security, fraud prevention or legal compliance. Search engines, screenshots, reposts and messages held by other users are separate copies. Your request to the original platform cannot automatically erase a recipient’s independent copy; contact that recipient where appropriate.
Google Family Link: a specific account-deletion example
Google’s rule is narrow: “You can only delete your child’s account if you created it, and they’re under 13 or applicable age in your country.” This applies to the child account managed through Family Link, not to every social-media account that happens to be signed in on an Android device.

- Open Family Link and select the child.
- Open the child’s account settings.
- Choose the option to delete the account and follow the prompts.
- Read the final warning and save the confirmation.
Google warns that deleting the account removes access to stored emails, files, calendars, photos, purchases and related services. Remove the account from signed-in Android devices or Chromebooks first. If you delete the account while it remains signed in, the device may lock and require a factory reset. This is a separate Google-account consequence, not a general rule for every social platform.
Clean up phones, tablets and browsers separately
Remove a signed-in account from a device
Use the device’s account settings to remove the child’s account, then delete saved passwords, autofill entries, downloaded media and browser profiles. Clear app data only after confirming that the child’s wanted photos or messages have been exported. Removing a supervised child account from a device can remove local account data while leaving the online account available elsewhere; Google documents this distinction for supervised accounts.
Check other sessions
Review the platform’s active-session or logged-in-devices list and sign out devices the family no longer controls. Revoke third-party app access and remove saved login credentials from password managers that the child no longer uses. These steps reduce local access; they do not erase the platform’s servers.
Factory-reset only when necessary
A factory reset removes local data but also affects every account and file on the device. Back up unrelated family data, confirm the device can be reactivated, and use the reset only when required by the account-removal instructions or when transferring the device.
If the platform does not respond or refuses
- Give the platform one clear opportunity to fix the issue. Reply in the existing privacy or support thread, restate the account identifiers, and ask what information is missing.
- Track dates. Keep the submission receipt, verification date, promised response date, ticket number and every reply.
- Ask for a reasoned decision. Request the categories retained, the legal exception relied on, the retention period and whether recipients were notified.
- Escalate to the relevant data-protection regulator. The ICO says UK users should first give the organisation an opportunity to resolve the complaint. Residents elsewhere should use the regulator responsible for the organisation or the child’s data-protection rights in that jurisdiction.
- Protect the child while the dispute continues. Change passwords, enable multi-factor authentication, restrict visibility and report impersonation, threats or sexual exploitation through the platform’s safety channel and local authorities where necessary.
A regulator complaint concerns data-protection compliance; it does not decide custody or parental-responsibility disputes. For conflicting parental instructions, seek jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
UK policy context: a proposal is not a deletion command
A UK Government fact sheet updated 18 September 2026 describes planned under-16 social-media restrictions from spring 2027 and names Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook and X in its model. It says parents and children do not need to take action immediately under that proposal. Treat it as a UK policy update, not as a universal rule requiring deletion now and not as a substitute for the platform and privacy-law steps above.
The same fact sheet reports consultation findings that nine in ten parents supported a social-media ban for under-16s and two-thirds of young people agreed that under-16s should not be allowed to use at least some platforms. Those are consultation responses, not evidence that an account or its data has been erased.

Final deletion checklist
- Confirmed the child’s age, country, account holder and your legal authority.
- Discussed the child’s wishes and saved anything they want to keep.
- Recorded the username, account identifiers, profile URL and screenshots.
- Used the platform’s official delete or close control and saved its confirmation.
- Sent a separate written erasure request naming the data categories and recipients.
- Provided only the identity or parental-authority evidence required through a secure channel.
- Recorded the one-calendar-month target where UK ICO guidance applies and noted any verification date.
- Asked what the platform must retain, why, for how long and whether recipients were notified.
- Removed sessions, saved credentials and local account data from phones, tablets and browsers.
- Kept ticket numbers and escalated to the appropriate regulator if the platform failed to resolve the request.
