To delay an iOS or iPadOS release on company-owned iPhone and iPad devices, deploy a software-update deferral policy through your organization’s mobile device management (MDM) service. Apple documents a configurable delay of 1 to 90 days. On iPhone and iPad, that period applies to both ordinary updates and major upgrades. The exact console labels depend on the MDM service, enrollment method, operating-system version and supervision state.
A deferral only postpones when a release is offered. It is not a permanent block, and an administrator can separately enforce a target version by a deadline. Apple’s deployment documentation explains the controls in Install and enforce software updates for Apple devices.
How do I delay iOS updates with Apple device management?
The practical workflow is the same across most MDM platforms, even though each service presents different menus:
- Identify the devices. Record each iPhone or iPad’s iOS or iPadOS version, enrollment method and supervision status. These details determine which Apple configuration the device can receive.
- Choose the policy type. Use a time-based deferral when the goal is to hide a newly released update temporarily. Use a cadence setting when you want to influence which release choices are shown. Use enforcement when a selected version must be installed by a deadline.
- Create the Apple software-update configuration. In the MDM console, select the Apple software-update, restrictions, declarative configuration or software-update-settings control supplied by your service. Apple says each service developer implements these settings differently, so the exact path and field names must come from that service’s documentation. - Set the deferral period. Enter an integer from 1 through 90 days where the service exposes the Apple delay value. For iPhone and iPad, the combined period controls when updates and upgrades become visible after release.
- Assign the profile to a test group. Start with a small set of representative devices. Check that the release is no longer offered, that existing user-installed updates remain unaffected and that the configuration reports as installed.
- Expand the assignment. Apply the policy to the remaining device groups after confirming the intended behavior. Keep an exception group for urgent security validation or early testing.
- Document the end date and escalation rule. A deferral expires automatically when its configured period elapses. Record who can shorten it, what happens when a critical issue is discovered and whether a separate enforcement policy will later require installation.
There is no physical accessory, repair tool or special iPhone hardware required. The policy is delivered remotely to devices already enrolled in an organization’s management service.

What exactly does an iOS deferral do?
A time-based deferral prevents a managed device from offering an over-the-air software release until the selected interval has elapsed since Apple published it. During that interval, the user should not be able to choose that release through the normal software-update experience controlled by the policy. Once the period ends, the release becomes available according to the device’s other update settings.
On iPhone and iPad, Apple documents one combined delay for both updates and upgrades. In Apple terminology, an update is generally a release on the current operating-system line, while an upgrade moves to a newer major line. Do not configure an iPhone policy expecting the delay to hide only minor releases.
The delay is time-based rather than a permanent approval gate. It does not declare a release unsafe, remove Apple’s update package, or guarantee that users can never install it. It simply changes when the release is offered under the managed policy.

How long can I defer an iPhone update?
Apple’s current deployment guidance allows a custom deferral of 1 to 90 days. The number is the administrator-selected period, not a promise that every MDM console will display the same wording or default value. The countdown is tied to the release becoming available, and the device can show the update after the configured period has passed.
Older restriction documentation describes a 30-day default before updates become visible to supervised managed devices when no custom value is selected. That default belongs to the older restriction implementation; it should not be confused with the maximum configurable period. If your console shows 30 days without an explicit choice, verify whether it is displaying that default or an organization-defined policy.
Apple does not document a longer time-based iPhone or iPad deferral in the cited deployment material. A 90-day setting therefore represents the documented upper limit for this kind of visibility delay, not an indefinite hold.
Does an iOS update deferral delay major upgrades too?
Yes. For iPhone and iPad, Apple’s documented combined deferral covers both software updates and software upgrades. A policy set to 30, 60 or 90 days therefore delays the visibility of a new major iOS or iPadOS release as well as releases on the existing line.

This differs from Apple’s macOS terminology, where documentation describes separate minor-update and major-upgrade periods. Do not copy a Mac policy’s two-field model into an iPhone or iPad configuration. On iOS and iPadOS, look for the combined period or equivalent single deferral field supplied by the MDM service.
Which Apple management configuration should you use?
Apple documents several related controls. They solve different problems and have different platform requirements.

The table separates availability controls from enforcement. Treating every software-update field as a deferral can produce the wrong result: a target-version deadline may force installation, while a deferral only postpones offering the release.
Using the iOS 17 declarative Software Update configuration
Apple’s declarative Software Update configuration supports iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 and later. Apple lists both Device Enrollment and Automated Device Enrollment, and says supervision is not required for this configuration. The guide was published on September 25, 2024.

Its TargetLocalDateTime value represents the local date and time by which installation is forced if the user has not already installed the target version. That is an enforcement deadline, not a substitute for a 1–90-day release-visibility delay.
Use this path when the policy objective is “reach version X by date Y.” Use a deferral control when the objective is “do not offer the newly published release until the delay has elapsed.” In a mature rollout, an organization can use both: defer a release during validation, then enforce the approved version later.
Using Software Update settings on iOS 18 and later
Apple’s newer Software Update settings configuration applies to iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 and later. It supports Device Enrollment and Automated Device Enrollment. Supervision is required for most settings, although Apple documents exceptions for particular enforcement and beta-testing keys.

The deferral controls are represented by a Deferrals dictionary. The key CombinedPeriodInDays accepts an integer from 1 through 90 and controls when updates and upgrades become visible after release. Your MDM console may expose this as a friendly field such as “combined deferral period” rather than showing the Apple key.
The same configuration includes RecommendedCadence values that influence which update choices appear to the user. Apple documents values such as Oldest, which can keep the user on the older release line while the configured delay elapses. Cadence is not identical to deferral: it shapes the choices presented, while the combined period controls the timing of visibility.
For exact key behavior and exceptions, consult Apple’s Software Update settings declarative configuration for Apple devices. Then confirm that your MDM service exposes the needed keys for the device’s enrollment and supervision state.
Can MDM still force an update during a deferral?
Yes. Apple says automatic software updates follow time-based deferrals and begin after the delay passes, but an administrator can separately specify a target version and an enforcement date. Enforcement can occur regardless of the configured deferral.
The user may install the target before the deadline. If the user does not, the device is forced to install it at the specified local time. This makes enforcement a deliberate override of the waiting period, not an accidental failure of the deferral.

Plan communications and connectivity expectations accordingly; a deadline does not eliminate the device’s network or user-confirmation behavior in that situation.
Use enforcement sparingly and document the reason. A deferral is appropriate for application compatibility testing, help-desk preparation or a staged rollout. An enforcement deadline is appropriate when the organization has approved a specific version and needs devices to reach it by a fixed date.

Enrollment and supervision requirements to check first
- Operating-system generation: confirm whether the device runs iOS/iPadOS 17 or later for the declarative Software Update configuration, or iOS/iPadOS 18 or later for Software Update settings.
- Enrollment method: distinguish Device Enrollment from Automated Device Enrollment. Apple lists both for the two newer configurations, but other Apple management products can expose different capabilities by enrollment type.
- Supervision: the iOS 17 declarative Software Update configuration does not require supervision. The iOS 18 Software Update settings configuration requires supervision for most settings, subject to Apple’s stated exceptions.
- Service support: verify that the MDM service implements the Apple configuration and the specific deferral or cadence keys you need. Apple explicitly notes that service developers implement these settings differently.
- Apple Business capability: Apple’s feature table lists iPhone and iPad deferral support with Automated Device Enrollment. Do not assume that a user-enrolled device exposes the same controls. Check the current Apple Business software-update configuration capability table for your enrollment scenario.
- Device ownership and scope: assign the policy only to devices that are actually managed. An unmanaged personal iPhone will not receive an organization’s MDM deferral profile.
How to verify that the delay is working
- Choose a test device whose release status is known and record its current iOS or iPadOS version.
- Confirm that the device reports the intended configuration as installed or acknowledged in the MDM console.
- Open the device’s software-update screen and check whether the newly released version is offered. Do not judge success only by the absence of an automatic installation; the policy is intended to control visibility as well.
- Check a device whose enrollment and supervision state match production. A supervised Automated Device Enrollment device can behave differently from a differently enrolled test phone.
- Record the release publication date, configured delay and expected availability date. A 90-day policy should not be evaluated as if it were a calendar-month setting.
- Test the transition after the period expires. The update should become available according to the device’s other update settings.
- If an enforcement policy is also assigned, verify its target version and local deadline separately. A forced installation during the deferral window may be the intended result.
Common failure modes and fixes
The update is visible immediately
Check that the profile is assigned to the device, has been acknowledged and contains a deferral rather than only a target-version enforcement setting. Confirm that the device meets the configuration’s minimum operating-system version and required supervision state. Also check whether the release has already passed the configured interval.
The console does not show a 1–90-day field
The service may expose Apple’s setting under another name, support only an older restriction path or omit the configuration entirely. Review the service’s Apple payload documentation and verify whether the device is eligible for the iOS 18 Software Update settings configuration. Apple does not require every service to present identical menus.

A supervised device still cannot receive the profile
Supervision alone does not guarantee support. Confirm the enrollment method, iOS/iPadOS generation and assignment scope. For Apple Business-managed deployments, check whether the feature table limits deferrals to Automated Device Enrollment.
The update installs before the delay ends
Look for a separate enforcement command, target-version deadline or administrator action. Apple states that enforcement can occur regardless of a configured deferral. Also check whether the user installed the release manually before the policy was applied.
The user sees several release choices
Review RecommendedCadence and related software-update settings. Deferral controls when a release becomes visible; cadence settings influence which choices are presented. A cadence value such as Oldest may be needed when the goal is to keep users on the older release line during the waiting period.
The device has no Wi-Fi and cannot complete enforcement
For an iPhone or iPad downloading over a mobile network, Apple says the user is prompted to confirm the download. Provide an approved network path or communicate the confirmation requirement before the enforcement deadline.
Policy examples for staged rollout
Compatibility review
Set a combined deferral within the documented 1–90-day range, assign it to production devices and keep a smaller pilot group outside the delay. Use the pilot to validate critical applications and support procedures. When the review is complete, allow the release to become visible or replace the delay with an approved target-version policy.

Longer change window
Choose a period near the upper end of the range when the organization needs more time for testing, training and help-desk preparation. The delay still ends automatically; it does not create a permanent freeze.
Security-driven deadline
Use a short deferral for validation, then configure a target version and local enforcement date. Tell users that the deadline can override the waiting period. This separates the operational need to test from the security need to reach an approved release.
Different policies for different fleets
Separate pilot, general-production and specialized-device groups. Keep the same Apple configuration family where possible, but confirm every group’s iOS/iPadOS version, enrollment method and supervision state. Avoid assuming that a policy proven on an Automated Device Enrollment fleet will behave identically on another enrollment type.

Write these objectives separately in the organization’s change record. A single field labeled “delay updates” may hide materially different behavior depending on which Apple payload the MDM service generates.
What an administrator should record
- The device group and enrollment method.
- The iOS or iPadOS version and supervision state.
- The Apple configuration family used.
- The configured combined deferral value and the date the release became available.
- Any cadence value that changes the release choices shown to users.
- The target version and local enforcement time, if enforcement is used.
- The expected availability date and the person authorized to shorten or replace the policy.
- The MDM service documentation link used to map its console fields to Apple’s configuration keys.
Keeping these records prevents a common operational mistake: treating a temporary visibility delay as if it were a permanent block, or treating a deadline as if it were merely a recommendation.
