To beat the Spider Crab in How to Fish, use the Empty Beer Can you get from the Lighthouse Keeper as bait near the Lighthouse. Bait the crab into charging, sidestep, then attack during its brief stagger. Repeat the cycle, collect the remains after the kill, and take them back to the Keeper for the Boat Keys.
Prepare for the encounter
The crab is summoned with a quest item, so prepare before using it. Eat first, and consider equipping a melee weapon. A knife is one guide writer’s preferred solo option; another guide also suggests brass knuckles as a lower-cost choice. These are recommendations, not requirements. Keep clams available if you have them and need emergency healing. PC Gamer’s guide describes one writer’s solo experience, while How to Fish Wiki’s guide gives general preparation advice.
Summon the Spider Crab
- Buy beer and give it to the Lighthouse Keeper.
- Keep the Empty Beer Can the Keeper returns and equip it as bait.
- Fish with the can near the Lighthouse to start the encounter. The can is the summon item; do not discard it before you use it. How to Fish Game Wiki’s walkthrough describes this trigger.
Use the charge-and-punish cycle
- Stay at a short distance. Keep close enough to encourage the crab to charge, but leave room to dodge.
- Sidestep the charge. Move laterally out of its path instead of retreating across the arena.
- Attack during the stagger. When the crab misses and becomes dazed or staggered, use a controlled attack combination.
- Disengage when it recovers. Reset your spacing and bait another charge rather than trading hits while it is active.
The opening is the recovery after a missed charge. Guides recommend repeating that pattern rather than trying to stay close and attack continuously. Exact hit counts and timing are not established as universal, so watch the crab’s animation instead of relying on a fixed sequence.
Keep the encounter moving
A September 2026 walkthrough identifies a second, white bar as an escape timer: if it expires before you defeat the crab, the encounter ends or resets. It does not establish a universal number of seconds. Use safe stagger windows to deal damage instead of kiting indefinitely. How to Fish Game Wiki also notes prior community bug reports, but the available guidance does not establish the current status of any particular patch-specific bug.

Adjust if the fight goes wrong
The crab keeps jumping instead of charging
One guide suggests that too much distance may be prompting the jumps. Move closer to encourage the charge, then dodge sideways when it commits. How to Fish Wiki presents this as advice, not a guaranteed fix.
The crab disappears
If the white escape bar runs out before the kill, the attempt has ended. Get another Empty Beer Can and summon it again. The cited guide does not specify a fixed timer duration.
You are playing solo
A melee weapon can help shorten the fight by adding damage during each safe opening. One PC Gamer writer found bare-handed solo attempts difficult, but that is an individual account rather than a universal difficulty result. Use the same charge, sidestep, and stagger approach whether or not you bring a weapon.

A current guide recommends having one player draw the crab’s attention while the others attack from positions away from its charge line. Avoid bunching together. This is guide advice, not a controlled comparison of solo and co-op strategies.

Claim the Boat Keys
After defeating the Spider Crab, pick up its remains and return them to the Lighthouse Keeper. Confirm that you receive the Boat Keys; defeating the boss alone does not complete this quest hand-in. PC Gamer and How to Fish Wiki describe the Keeper return as the progression step that follows the fight.
