To open the Citadel of Penance’s main gate permanently, defeat the Bloodcursed Lithopod in the ravine southeast of the Gloomshade Grove Beacon, pick up the Citadel Gate Lever from its remains, then return to the gate and install it in the wall mechanism. A separate teleport route can put you inside the Citadel, but it does not unlock the front gate.
Where to find the Bloodcursed Lithopod and Citadel Gate Lever
- Fast-travel to the Gloomshade Grove Beacon and head southeast toward the water. Follow the descending path into the ravine. If you are starting at the Citadel gate, take the sloping paths downhill toward the same area.
- Cross the broken gap using the pale bone structure. Continue along the coastal ledge, past the campfire, until you reach an open rocky area.
- Look for the Bloodcursed Lithopod at a large rocky outcropping. Nearby smaller enemies may also join the fight; one guide recommends clearing them first.
- After defeating the Lithopod, inspect its remains and manually collect the Citadel Gate Lever. It may not be added to your inventory automatically. Defeating the creature is also reported to open the nearby Ravaged Hideout.
How to beat the Bloodcursed Lithopod
Guides describe the Lithopod as a large stone crab that leaps and crashes down. Watch for the jump, dodge the slam, then attack during its recovery. Clear nearby enemies first if they are present so they do not interrupt the fight. These are reported tactics from published guides, not independently tested combat results.
How to install the lever and open the Citadel gate
- Return to the Gloomshade Grove Beacon and follow the cave or path route back toward the Citadel gate.
- Deal with the guard at the entrance if one is present.
- Interact with the empty mechanism beside the barred gate and confirm the “Put Lever?” prompt.
- Pull the installed lever to raise the gate. Guides report that it stays open permanently.
Can you enter the Citadel without the lever?
Yes. From the One-Legged Wolf Beacon in southeastern Fainweald, head toward the nearby ruins and touch the unusual candle- or pouch-like object. It teleports you into a lower prison cell inside the Citadel. This bypasses the Lithopod and the front entrance, but it does not raise the main gate; you will need to progress through the fortress to get out, and a Beacon is available inside.

What the gate gives you access to
GameSpot reports that the Citadel interior includes a fast-travel Beacon, a Revered Gland behind a breakable wall near the market stalls, and the Eredrim Shell near the center. AllThings.How says Eredrim is obtained after defeating the Warden. These are guide-reported destination details, rather than official developer documentation.
