Beat Sadness by treating the encounter as a movement-and-punish fight: keep leaving the landing zones of the falling pink or purple bubbles, avoid the spinning hitbox, and move in as soon as the reported dizzy animation begins. The difficult middle phase is less certain. Two guides describe a bubble shield with one, then two, then three clock objectives reached through floating platforms, bounce pads, and glowing grapple points; other walkthrough material describes platform breaks without confirming clocks. Use the visual objective that appears in your game rather than following an unverified route literally.

Sadness is reported in the Amphitheater of Tears, with one walkthrough placing the fight after Apprentice’s Wing. The attack advice below is based on overlapping secondary accounts, while every shield-phase instruction is labeled according to the conflicting reports.

Quick reference: what to do against each reported pattern

Pattern Your response Confidence and limitation
Falling pink or purple bubbles Keep moving and step completely out of each bubble’s landing path. Reported by two secondary guides; medium confidence. No published damage radius or timing is established.
Spinning attack Stay outside the hitbox, then close the distance when Sadness is reported dizzy. Reported by two guides; medium confidence. Neither gives an exact punish duration.
Slam or other heavy attack Back away and wait for the animation to finish before attempting a hit. Recommended by one guide only; low confidence.
Bubble shield or platform phase Look for clocks, platforms, bounce pads, grapple points, or breakable platform segments and follow the objective shown on your screen. Accounts conflict. The one/two/three-clock sequence is not confirmed by an official source.

The table is intentionally conservative. No source supplies a verified damage value, a named build, a frame-perfect timing, or a guaranteed route. A safe, repeatable response is more useful here than invented precision.

Find the arena and recognize the encounter

Multiple pages place Sadness in the Amphitheater of Tears. Duskfade.org’s walkthrough is the source that connects the encounter to Apprentice’s Wing, while its boss index and the Duskfade Wiki also identify the Amphitheater of Tears. If you are progressing linearly, check that you have reached this arena before assuming an earlier fight is Sadness.

At the start, spend a few seconds observing instead of committing to an attack. Note where the floor gives you room to sidestep, where a ring or outer edge limits your movement, and whether the arena contains platforms, bounce pads, or glowing grapple points. This observation matters because the returned guides disagree about the shield phase. The safest plan is to identify the current objective visually, then execute it without assuming that every version of the fight uses the same mechanism.

Build a movement habit before trying to deal damage

Sadness rewards short, deliberate movement rather than standing still to complete a long attack string. Keep your character close enough to reach the boss after a spin, but never so close that a single turn catches you. Use the open side of the arena as your default escape direction and avoid backing into an edge while watching for bubbles.

  • Keep the boss in view while moving laterally; turning your camera away makes a falling bubble harder to read.
  • Leave the entire projected landing area, not just the point directly under Sadness.
  • After an evade, re-establish a medium distance instead of immediately attacking from panic range.
  • Save your most committed attack for a confirmed opening, especially the dizzy state after the spin.

These habits do not depend on a specific weapon or build, and the available accounts do not establish a superior loadout. Choose the controls and attacks you already execute reliably; survival creates more opportunities than an unverified damage setup.

Falling bubbles: the primary space-control attack

How the warning works

Two secondary guides describe pink or purple bubbles falling into the arena. Their common advice is to keep moving and leave the landing path. The reports do not publish a fixed interval, a damage number, or a confirmed shape for the impact zone, so do not memorize a timing from another player’s clip and assume it is universal.

Safe response

  1. Keep Sadness on screen and watch the floor for the next bubble’s projected landing area.
  2. Move laterally or diagonally until your character is clearly outside that area.
  3. Do not stop merely because the bubble is descending; wait until the landing threat has passed or the next target appears.
  4. Once the floor is clear, return to a position from which you can see Sadness’s next animation.

Running in a straight line across the entire arena can create a second problem: you may lose the distance needed to punish the spin. Prefer a compact sidestep that clears the bubble while preserving a route back toward Sadness.

Common bubble mistakes

  • Micro-stepping: moving a few pixels while remaining inside the projected area still leaves you vulnerable.
  • Camera fixation: staring at Sadness and ignoring the floor makes the warning easy to miss.
  • Greedy attacks: beginning a slow attack after a bubble appears can lock you into the impact zone.
  • Edge trapping: repeatedly retreating to the outer boundary removes your next escape direction.

Spin attack: create the reliable punish window

Survive the spin

The overlapping guides describe a spinning attack followed by a short period in which Sadness becomes dizzy. First avoid the spinning hitbox. Because no reviewed page gives an exact duration or a measured radius, use the animation itself as your signal: keep moving until the rotation has clearly ended, then confirm the dizzy state before committing.

Convert dizziness into damage

  1. Stay at a safe medium distance while the spin is active.
  2. As the animation ends, watch for the reported dizzy state rather than attacking during the final rotation.
  3. Move in promptly once dizziness is visible; the guides specifically advise staying close enough that you can reach this opening.
  4. Use your most dependable short attack or combo, then disengage before the next pattern begins.

The goal is not to remain beside Sadness indefinitely. It is to be near enough to capitalize on the opening and far enough away that the next spin or bubble does not catch you. If your attack has a long recovery, use a shorter option until you understand how quickly the boss resumes action.

Why the spacing advice is not contradictory

“Stay close” and “avoid the spin” describe different moments. During the spin, prioritize the hitbox and move out. During the reported dizzy animation, close the gap immediately. Holding one distance for the entire sequence either leaves damage on the table or puts you inside the attack.

Slam and heavy attacks: a cautious, lower-confidence rule

One guide recommends backing off from a slam or heavy attack and waiting until the animation ends before striking. The other reviewed pages do not corroborate this pattern, so treat it as a practical precaution rather than a confirmed universal sequence. If you see a large, committed wind-up that is not a spin, disengage, watch the recovery, and test a single safe hit only after the animation has finished.

Do not build your whole strategy around an assumed slam. The evidence does not establish its exact name, frequency, hitbox, or whether it appears in every current build. Your on-screen animation is the authority for the attempt you are playing.

The shield or platform phase: two incompatible descriptions

Clock-objective account

NerdsChalk’s Sadness guide and the Duskfade Wiki both describe three bubble-shield stages. In that account, the objectives increase from one clock to two clocks and then three clocks. Floating platforms, bounce pads, and glowing grapple points provide access, and the Duskfade Wiki says health pickups appear on the platforms. After the objectives are broken, the guides direct you back to the arena floor to damage Sadness.

If your game clearly displays clocks and those traversal elements, use this conservative route:

  1. Identify every visible clock before jumping so you know whether the stage contains one, two, or three objectives.
  2. Use the floating platforms, bounce pads, and glowing grapple points to reach the objective rather than attempting an unsupported shortcut.
  3. Break the visible clock, then reassess the arena for the next target; the reported count rises by stage.
  4. Collect a health pickup on a platform only when doing so does not strand you above a hazard.
  5. Return to the arena floor after the objectives are gone and resume the normal bubble-and-spin loop.

Platform-break account

Duskfade.org’s boss index and walkthrough describe standard platform breaks, outer-ring positioning during sweeps, and using platform segments to close distance. Their supplied descriptions do not confirm clocks, the one/two/three progression, or the exact traversal route above. They may reflect a different mechanic, a different build, or an inaccurate retelling.

When your screen shows breakable platform segments but no clocks, follow those visible breaks and use the outer ring during sweeps as described by that account. Do not spend time searching for clock mechanisms that are not present. The shared principle is to complete the arena objective before expecting normal damage opportunities to return.

Can Sadness be damaged inside the bubble shield?

The clock-objective guides tell you to return to the floor for damage after breaking the objectives; they do not establish a reliable way to damage Sadness while the shield is active. Treat the shield as protective until the visible objective is cleared. Testing attacks against it may waste your opening and expose you to hazards, so prioritize the objective shown in your arena.

A complete attempt, from pull to victory

  1. Enter and observe. Confirm the Amphitheater of Tears setting and identify your movement lanes, outer ring, platforms, bounce pads, and grapple points.
  2. Establish medium spacing. Keep Sadness visible and leave enough room to react to a spin without losing the path back to the boss.
  3. Resolve bubbles first. When a pink or purple bubble targets your area, move fully out of the landing path before attacking.
  4. React to the spin. Evade the rotating hitbox. Do not attack during the rotation unless your own animation is clearly safe.
  5. Confirm dizziness. Once Sadness is reported dizzy, close in and perform a controlled attack, then disengage.
  6. Handle an unfamiliar heavy wind-up defensively. Back away, let the animation end, and test one hit rather than committing to a long sequence.
  7. Switch objectives when the shield appears. If clocks are visible, use the reported one-to-two-to-three progression and traversal tools; if only platform breaks are visible, follow those breaks instead.
  8. Return to the floor. After the shield objective is visibly cleared, resume the bubble-and-spin loop and spend your damage attempts on the reported dizzy opening.
  9. Repeat without rushing. The guides provide no verified enrage timer or damage threshold, so a clean cycle is preferable to a speculative burst.

Positioning choices that prevent avoidable losses

Center versus outer ring

The clock-focused reports emphasize platforms and traversal, while Duskfade.org advises outer-ring positioning during sweeps. These are not mutually exclusive instructions for every arena state. Use the center or an open interior lane when you need several escape directions for bubbles; move toward the outer ring during a sweep only if the edge leaves you a clear route and does not trap you. During a platform objective, prioritize the platform geometry actually present on your screen.

How close should you stand?

No source provides a distance measured in meters, character lengths, or frames. Use a practical test: if you can reach Sadness during the dizzy animation with one short movement, you are close enough; if the spin can touch you before you have time to evade, increase the gap. Adjust after each attempt rather than copying an unverified number.

What to do when health starts draining during the clock phase

The available accounts do not establish a confirmed cause, rate, or universal health-drain rule for a clock phase. The Duskfade Wiki says health pickups appear on the platforms, but it does not prove that every loss of health is caused by a timer or that a pickup always resolves it. If your health begins falling, first leave any visible hazard, complete the active objective, and take a clearly reachable platform pickup when doing so is safe. Record what the arena displays so you can distinguish a persistent hazard from damage caused by a missed bubble or traversal mistake.

Do not assume that standing still, attacking the shield, or waiting on the floor will stop an unverified drain. If the effect continues after the visible objective is completed, treat that behavior as version-specific until an authoritative source confirms the mechanic.

Troubleshooting failed attempts

I die before reaching the dizzy opening

You are probably spending too long inside the spin’s range or sacrificing movement to finish attacks. Shorten your approach, wait for the unmistakable end of the rotation, and use one dependable attack during dizziness. The guides report an opening, not a guaranteed full combo.

Bubbles keep clipping me while I attack

Stop attacking as soon as a landing area appears. Clear the entire projection, then return to medium spacing. A hit gained before impact is not worth being locked in the bubble’s path.

I cannot find the clocks

Do not assume they exist. The clock sequence is reported by two pages but not confirmed by Duskfade.org’s boss and walkthrough accounts. Look for the objective your build actually displays; it may use platform breaks instead.

The shield never seems to open

Check whether every visible objective has been completed, including a second or third clock in later stages. If your arena has no clocks, inspect platform segments and traversal points instead. The evidence does not support a universal checklist beyond clearing the visible phase objective and returning to the floor.

I attack immediately after a spin and get hit

Wait for the dizzy state rather than guessing from the end of the rotation. The exact punish duration is unpublished, so use the animation as your confirmation and withdraw after a controlled hit.

What is confirmed, and what remains uncertain

The strongest overlap among the returned guides is the falling-bubble pattern and the spin-to-dizzy opening. Those reports support the core strategy in this article, but they still do not provide exact timings or damage values. The shield phase is materially less certain: two pages specify clocks in a one, two, three sequence, while two Duskfade.org pages describe platform breaks without confirming clocks. No official developer source was found in the available material, so a future patch or a different platform build could explain the discrepancy.

For current context, see NerdsChalk’s Sadness boss guide (updated 2026-08-14), the Duskfade Wiki boss guide (updated 2026-09-20), Duskfade.org’s boss index (reviewed 2026-09-07), and its full-game walkthrough (publication date not established in the returned listing). Read the shield instructions against what your own encounter displays, not as a promise that every account describes the same implementation.
