Defeat Deerclops by preparing armor, healing food, a dependable light source and a thermal stone, then draw it well away from your base before attacking. The safest solo plan is disciplined hit-and-run kiting; the lowest-risk group plan is to lure Deerclops into one or two Treeguards or a Beefalo herd and let them do the damage. Do not simply run away: until it dies, it can return during winter and may eventually destroy your base.
What Deerclops is and why the encounter is dangerous
Deerclops is the winter giant in Don’t Starve Together. The fight normally takes place at night, when poor visibility and cold make an otherwise manageable battle much harder. Its most important strategic behavior is structural targeting: it generally attacks the nearest structure to your character. That makes the location of the fight as important as your weapon.

The Don’t Starve Together wiki lists Deerclops at 4,000 health. A separate guide gives 2,000 health for single-player Don’t Starve and 4,000 for Don’t Starve Together; use the 4,000 figure for the multiplayer game, while remembering that health and behavior can change with game updates or configuration.
There is no universally reliable spawn-day rule across current guides. The wiki records at most one Deerclops per winter and says the first commonly appears around world Day 30.8 with default 15-day winter settings. Switchblade Gaming describes a winter Day 3 spawn, while another source says no giant can attack during the first 27 days. Because those claims conflict, treat the entire first winter as a preparation window rather than planning around one calendar day.

Build a pre-fight loadout
Armor and weapon
A practical baseline is a log suit paired with a football helmet. Carry a spear or ham bat for damage. This combination gives a new or moderately equipped survivor enough protection to make a mistake survivable without requiring rare equipment. Bring a replacement weapon if your primary weapon is close to breaking; stopping to craft in the arena is much more dangerous than arriving with a spare.
Healing and emergency supplies
Pack healing food before you leave camp. Tanking or taking an unexpected hit consumes health quickly, and healing is difficult when you are also watching attack timing and temperature. Include cut grass, twigs and logs so you can make an emergency fire, replace basic tools or repair your setup without returning to the base. A thermal stone is especially useful because the battle occurs in winter and often lasts through the night.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Light and warmth
Choose a light source that will not expire during the encounter. Set up light around the intended fighting area before Deerclops arrives; a campfire is one suggested option, and it also provides warmth. Leave enough room to move around the fire rather than placing it where your kiting path will collide with the flame. If you rely on portable light, carry the materials needed to refresh it instead of assuming the first light will last until the kill.
Keep the arena away from anything valuable
Scout a clearing before winter night. The arena should be far enough from farms, chests, crafting stations and other structures that Deerclops will not select your base as the nearest target. Remove obstacles that can trap your character during a sideways dodge, but do not clear every tree: nearby Treeguards can become a deliberate weapon if you choose a luring strategy. Mark the route between camp and arena so a retreat does not accidentally lead the boss back through your settlement.

Choose the right way to kill it
| Method | Gear requirement | Players | Main risk | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kiting | Armor, weapon, light, healing and room to move | One or more | Misreading the attack and being frozen by repeated hits | Reliable solo damage when you can keep a rhythm |
| Luring | Enough mobility to guide Deerclops and a suitable enemy group | One or more | Other creatures may kill your character or consume the loot | Reducing direct combat, especially with Treeguards or Beefalo |
| Tanking | Strong armor and a large healing reserve | One | Health loss and a possible death before the boss falls | Only when your supplies and protection clearly exceed the damage you expect |
| Team attack | Each player needs protection, food and a light plan | Two or more | Players can block one another or pull the boss toward structures | Splitting attention between a kiter and a rear attacker |
Kiting: the standard solo method
One guide recommends striking Deerclops up to four times and immediately running. Another recommends waiting for the attack animation, dodging sideways, hitting two or three times, then repeating. These are timing variations of the same principle: never stand in the attack zone waiting for one extra hit. Start with the shorter two- or three-hit pattern until you can read the animation consistently; increase the number only when the spacing is comfortable.
Keep your movement path broad and predictable. A wide circle gives you time to see the wind-up, while a tight circle around a tree, rock or fire can make your own obstacle the cause of a hit. If you are struck twice or more in quick succession, the cited guide warns that you can be frozen. Break contact, restore health and re-establish a clear path rather than trying to finish a low-health boss while your character is exposed.
Luring into Treeguards or Beefalo
Luring is the most frequently cited low-combat solution. Lead Deerclops toward Treeguards, which are the common choice; one or two are reportedly enough. A Beefalo herd can also fight it. Keep moving so Deerclops follows you into the hostile group, then stay outside the creatures’ attack area and intervene only when it is safe.
Do not use enemies that eat loot, such as spiders and pigs, if you want the meat and eyeball. Watch the battle from a distance and be ready to redirect Deerclops if it breaks away toward your base. Luring still requires armor, food and light because the creatures may switch targets, and a dark forest can make it impossible to tell whether Deerclops is following you.

Tanking: simple, but expensive
Standing still and attacking can work only with enough armor and healing food. A cited guide describes hitting continuously until one player dies, which illustrates the method’s limitation: it converts the fight into a race between your health and Deerclops’s health. Use it only when you have deliberately brought more protection and healing than the encounter demands. If your gear is merely the baseline log suit, football helmet and spear, kiting is the safer choice.
Two-player positioning
In a team, assign one player to kite in a wide circle while the other attacks from behind. The kiter controls the boss’s direction and keeps it away from structures; the second player uses the opening to deal damage. Agree on the retreat direction before the fight starts. A second player who attacks from the wrong side can make Deerclops turn toward the base or collide with the kiter, so communication matters more than adding an extra weapon.
A safe encounter sequence
- Finish preparation before the warning becomes urgent. Put armor on, equip the weapon, carry healing food, pack cut grass, twigs and logs, and bring a thermal stone.
- Move to the prepared arena. Light the area, check that no valuable structure is the nearest target, and confirm that your retreat route does not pass through camp.
- Choose one method. Decide whether you are kiting, luring or tanking before the first attack. Changing methods in the middle of a panic usually creates more exposure than it saves.
- Control distance. During kiting, wait for the attack animation, dodge sideways and take your selected number of hits. During luring, keep Deerclops moving toward Treeguards or Beefalo without allowing it to redirect toward the base.
- Reset when damaged. Use healing food and regain a clean movement path after a hit. Do not trade additional hits merely because Deerclops is close to death.
- Secure the arena after the kill. Keep the light active while you collect drops, check your temperature and confirm that no surviving creatures are still hostile.
What to do when the fight goes wrong
Deerclops is heading toward your base
Stop attacking and pull it in the opposite direction. Because it tends to target the nearest structure to your character, your position determines where the threat travels. Do not kite in a circle that repeatedly brings you past your main base; use a long route to a spare clearing or an already prepared arena.
You lose the light
Do not continue swinging in darkness. Drop the materials for an emergency fire, restore visibility and warmth, then resume the chosen method. This is why spare logs and a thermal stone belong in the loadout rather than in a chest back home.

You are repeatedly hit or frozen
Abandon the four-hit pattern and use the shorter two- or three-hit timing, or disengage entirely while healing. Reposition on open ground before trying again. Repeating the same mistimed attack is more dangerous than allowing the fight to last another minute.
You run away and the boss disappears from view
Assume it is still a threat. One guide says Deerclops keeps returning until winter ends or the base is destroyed unless it is killed. Track its location, restore your supplies and either finish the fight away from camp or deliberately lead it to a suitable group of Treeguards or Beefalo.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA lure turns chaotic
Back away from spiders or pigs if they enter the battle, because cited guides warn that such enemies can eat loot. Reclaim control of Deerclops’s path before attempting another lure. If no safe enemy group remains, switch to kiting in the prepared clearing rather than improvising near your structures.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Loot and what the Deerclops Eyeball does
A kill yields eight pieces of Meat and one Deerclops Eyeball. The eyeball does not spoil. It restores a large amount of health and hunger but drains sanity, so treat it as a powerful emergency food rather than ordinary travel rations. The sanity effect is separate from the unverified claims about a passive sanity drain while standing near the boss; that proximity mechanic has not been confirmed by the available guides.

The primary documented craft is the Eyebrella, which provides complete rain protection. Some guides also name the eyeball in recipes for the Chester Eye Bone or the Life-Giving Amulet, but those recipe claims differ between sources. Open the in-game crafting menu for your current game version before planning around either item; do not assume a recipe from an older guide is still available or unchanged.
Version and source caveats
Deerclops guides do not agree on every mechanic. The 4,000-health value above is the figure listed by the Don’t Starve Together wiki, while another guide separates single-player and multiplayer health. Spawn timing is similarly disputed: the wiki’s “around world Day 30.8” description under default 15-day winter settings conflicts with claims of winter Day 3 and with a statement that giants cannot attack during the first 27 days.
The Klei forum thread and GamerEmpire guide used by many older explanations are more than 1,400 days old, so their combat details may no longer match the current build. Check your game’s version and in-game recipe book when a detail affects a high-cost decision. The robust advice remains version-resistant: prepare protection, healing, warmth and light; fight away from structures; and use controlled kiting or a carefully selected lure.
