Use the game’s specially forged melee weapons, remove any Lymbic growths before attacking the body, build Lymbic energy with ordinary strikes, and spend it during staggered openings. Keep stamina available for defense, use the drone to create space or control an encounter, and treat parrying as optional rather than mandatory.
That approach works because the recurring supernatural enemies—often called Hollow Walkers in reviews—share a combat logic even when their attacks differ. The evidence does not support a reliable enemy-by-enemy weakness chart, so the safest strategy is to read each encounter, identify its protection state and punish the opening you create.

What makes these enemies different
Nacon describes the supernatural creatures in Hell Is Us as enemies that modern weapons cannot defeat. The game instead gives you specially forged swords, spears and axes designed for fighting them. That makes the melee weapon system your primary answer; conventional firearms are not a substitute for the weapons intended to harm these creatures.
PC Gamer’s 2026 review refers to the recurring creatures as Hollow Walkers and describes five broad enemy types. That is a reviewer’s count, not an official bestiary or a confirmed list of universal counters. The practical distinction that matters in a fight is between an enemy’s broad type and a protected variant of that type.
#1 Best Overall
- A HOSTILE WORLD: In addition to the civil war dividing the country, the region is suffering from a mysterious calamity, which has given rise to supernatural creatures that no modern weapon can defeat. Your drone and sword from a different age are your faithful allies as you cut a path through lands infested with terrifying chimeras and try to unravel the mystery of their appearance.
- A UNIQUE EXPLORATION SYSTEM: No map, no compass, no quest markers. Following your instincts is part of the adventure. Enjoy a unique experience that uses innovative writing and level design to let you make your own decisions and follow your instincts as you explore. Your discoveries are yours alone.
- COMBAT AGAINST ORIGINAL CREATURES: Swords, spears and axes. A wide range of weapons forged specially for fighting these supernatural creatures is available. You must learn how to fight these monsters and use your drone wisely to stay alive.
- 'The central theme of Hell is Us is that human violence is a perpetual cycle fueled by human emotions and passions.'' – Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, Creative Director
Enemy type versus variant
An enemy type is the broad behavior category an opponent belongs to. A variant can add a particular protection mechanic without changing the basic rules of the entire type. Some variants carry bulbous Lymbic growths. While those growths remain, attacks aimed at the main body do not deal meaningful damage. Destroy the growths first, then attack the exposed body.
Do not assume that a name, visual effect or apparent element proves a specific weakness. The available evidence does not verify a complete named roster or establish that a particular emotion, weapon or damage type universally counters one category.
The reliable combat loop
Use the following sequence whenever you meet a recurring supernatural enemy. It is more dependable than trying to memorize an unverified weakness table.
- Read the enemy before committing. Check whether the opponent has visible Lymbic growths. Note whether the incoming attack is a single, readable strike, a multi-hit sequence, an area attack or something that cannot be blocked.
- Equip a forged melee weapon. Swords, spears and axes are the weapon families Nacon identifies for these creatures. Select the one whose reach and handling let you stay in control of the encounter.
- Clear protective growths. If the variant has bulbous Lymbic growths, make them your first targets. Do not waste your strongest attacks on the main body while the protection is intact.
- Build Lymbic energy with ordinary hits. A June 2026 combat guide recommends using regular attacks to build energy instead of spending the resource immediately.
- Create a vulnerable opening. Evade or defend through the enemy’s committed attack, or use a stagger created by your own pressure or support abilities. The stronger Lymbic attack is most valuable during this opening.
- Spend the stronger Lymbic attack. Use it on an exposed or staggered target, where the resource produces a meaningful damage window rather than being thrown out while the enemy can simply interrupt you.
- Reset before your stamina is empty. Back away or reposition while you still have enough stamina to dodge the next dangerous sequence. A small loss of damage is safer than being trapped without an escape.
Handling Lymbic growth variants
How to recognize the protection state
Look for conspicuous, bulbous growths attached to the enemy. Their presence is the key signal that the encounter is using the protected variant behavior documented by PC Gamer. Treat the growths as separate objectives rather than as decoration.
Target priority
Attack the growths first and keep your camera or character position arranged so you can see the remaining ones. If you lose track of a growth while circling the enemy, pause your offense and reacquire it rather than repeatedly striking an invulnerable body.
After the growths break
Once the protection is gone, return to the normal loop: ordinary attacks to build Lymbic energy, defense through the enemy’s retaliation and a stronger Lymbic attack during a stagger or other vulnerable moment. The growth mechanic changes when damage becomes possible; it does not replace the need to manage stamina and timing.
Choosing dodge, parry or block
Your defensive choice should match the attack pattern and your consistency with the timing. The guide updated in June 2026 recommends preserving stamina, dodging multi-hit, group and unblockable attacks, and using a parry against a familiar single strike. A GamesRadar+ review reports that dodging and direct attacks, with occasional blocking, were viable and that no enemy type required mastery of parrying.
| Defensive option | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Dodge | Multi-hit strings, group pressure, unblockable attacks or any pattern you do not yet recognize | Consumes stamina and may move you away from the target |
| Parry | A familiar, readable single strike when you can consistently match the timing | Missed timing can leave you exposed; it is not required for any documented enemy type |
| Block | An occasional answer when you need to absorb a manageable hit and cannot reposition | It is less flexible than moving away from broad or unblockable attacks |
If parry timing is giving you trouble
Stop treating parrying as a progression gate. Build your routine around dodging, direct attacks and occasional blocking, as the GamesRadar+ review describes. Practice parries later against attacks you can identify early; the reward is a possible counter opportunity, not access to a required enemy-specific solution.
Stamina discipline
Do not chain attacks until the stamina bar is exhausted. End a sequence with enough reserve to evade the response you expect. Against a multi-hit attack, one early dodge may not be enough; preserve the resource for the complete sequence instead of spending it all on an extra swing.
Weapon handling: choose control, not a claimed matchup
The available comparisons concern handling rather than a verified elemental or enemy-type advantage. GamesRadar+ characterizes dual axes as faster but weaker and greatswords as slower but harder-hitting. Use that distinction to match your weapon to the space and tempo of the encounter, not to infer that one weapon is a universal counter.

| Weapon approach | Handling described by the review | When it may suit you |
|---|---|---|
| Dual axes | Faster attacks with lower individual damage | You prefer shorter commitments and more opportunities to disengage before a retaliation |
| Greatsword | Slower attacks with heavier hits | You can recognize safe openings and are comfortable committing to a longer animation |
| Other forged melee weapons | Nacon identifies swords, spears and axes as the relevant weapon families; documented material does not establish a complete performance ranking for every model | Choose based on reach, timing and your ability to stay inside a safe attack window |
There is no verified evidence here that one forged weapon defeats a named enemy type more efficiently in every situation. A weapon you can stop, dodge with and aim reliably is generally more useful than a theoretically stronger option that repeatedly leaves you open.

Use the drone and Lymbic abilities as support
Melee, the drone and Lymbic abilities are complementary systems. GamesRadar+ describes drone modules that can distract, stun or damage enemies as more modules become available. Use those effects to create a melee opening, interrupt pressure or buy time to deal with a growth—not as a promise that the drone alone solves every encounter.
Creating a safe opening
- Deploy a distraction when you need a moment to reposition or line up a growth.
- Use a stun to interrupt an enemy before committing to the stronger Lymbic attack.
- Apply drone damage while maintaining enough distance to recover stamina, then return to melee when the enemy is vulnerable.
The drone’s exact value depends on the modules available to your character. The documented point is its role as control and supplementary damage, not a universal replacement for forged weapons.
Resource timing
Do not spend every available ability as soon as it becomes ready. If the enemy is protected by growths, reserve the effect that gives you the safest access to those targets. If the body is exposed but the enemy is not staggered, wait for a better opening when possible. This keeps the support system aligned with the same stamina-and-window discipline used by melee.
Reading an encounter before it starts
A few seconds of observation can prevent an entire failed attempt. Before attacking, move far enough away to see the enemy’s silhouette and check whether growths are attached. This also tells you whether the opponent is already committing to an attack. Starting an attack string while the enemy is halfway through a multi-hit sequence usually forces you to spend stamina defensively before you have built any useful Lymbic energy.
Recommended Free Tools
Once you identify the pattern, decide what your next successful exchange should accomplish. Against a protected variant, the goal is a growth, not body damage. Against an exposed body, the goal is to build energy safely and create a stagger. This simple objective keeps you from mixing several priorities into one risky combo.
When several enemies pressure you
Group pressure is a reason to value space over maximum damage. The June 2026 guide specifically places group and multi-hit attacks in the dodge category. Back away early enough to avoid being surrounded, then use a drone distraction or stun if a module is available. Re-enter only after the immediate attack has ended and you can see which target is safe to approach. Do not assume that a powerful Lymbic attack will protect you from every attacker at once; spend it when the target and timing are clear.
When the body is exposed but not staggered
Exposure is an opportunity, not a command to empty every resource. Use ordinary attacks to build energy, finish the shortest safe sequence and disengage before the enemy’s response. If the enemy is close to staggering, a drone stun or controlled pressure may create the opening you need. If it is still attacking freely, preserve stamina and wait rather than forcing a heavy commitment.
What is—and is not—known about the five broad types
PC Gamer’s review reports five broad enemy types, but the evidence available for this guide does not verify a complete list of their names or a unique counter for each. A fan-site search result mentions labels such as Primeval, Feral, Protector, Artillery and Negator, yet the retrieved material does not provide enough verifiable tactical detail to publish those labels as a weakness taxonomy.

Attacking the body before the growths
Symptom: Your hits appear to connect but the main enemy does not take meaningful damage.
Correction: Stop attacking the body and scan for bulbous Lymbic growths. Destroy every visible protective growth before returning to the main target.

Spending Lymbic energy on cooldown
Symptom: Your strongest attack is unavailable when the enemy is staggered or exposed.
Correction: Use ordinary attacks to build energy, then wait for a vulnerable opening. The June 2026 guide specifically recommends this order.
Running out of stamina during a retaliation
Symptom: You land an extra hit but cannot dodge the follow-up.
Correction: End the attack string earlier. Reserve stamina for the complete incoming sequence, especially against multi-hit, group or unblockable attacks.

A practical training routine
- Start with observation. Spend the first exchange watching the attack shape instead of trying to maximize damage.
- Test your defense. Dodge the first dangerous sequence. If a later single strike is clearly telegraphed, try a parry only when you can do so without risking the entire encounter.
- Practice target order. Against a growth variant, deliberately ignore the body and remove the protection first.
- Build one complete energy cycle. Use regular attacks until you have Lymbic energy, then wait for a staggered opening before spending it.
- Add support deliberately. Use the drone once to create space or a stun, then return to the melee rhythm rather than activating every available ability at once.
- Review the failure. If you were hit, identify whether the cause was a missed growth, an empty stamina bar, an early Lymbic attack or an incorrect defensive choice. Change one variable on the next attempt.
A quick decision tree for difficult attempts
When an encounter goes wrong, ask three questions in order. First, was the enemy protected? If yes, stop measuring your damage against the main body and return to the growths. Second, did you spend stamina or Lymbic energy before the enemy committed to an attack? If yes, shorten your opening sequence and reserve resources for the response. Third, did you choose a defense that matched the attack? Dodge broad, multi-hit, group and unblockable pressure; reserve parries for readable single strikes; use a block only when moving away is impractical.
This decision tree is useful because it separates mechanical problems. A failed parry does not mean the weapon is wrong, and a protected body that will not lose health does not mean the enemy has an undiscovered elemental resistance. Correct one decision at a time, then repeat the encounter.
Platform and terminology note
Nacon’s official FAQ identifies console platforms for Hell Is Us. Platform-specific controls can change how comfortable dodging, parrying and drone deployment feel, but the combat principles above do not depend on a particular controller layout.
Bottom line for every encounter
Read the state of the enemy before attacking. If Lymbic growths are present, destroy them first. Fight with the specially forged melee weapons, build energy through ordinary hits and spend the stronger Lymbic attack on a staggered or exposed target. Preserve stamina, dodge attacks that are broad or unblockable, parry only when the timing is familiar, and use the drone to make openings rather than as a universal replacement for melee. That is the documented, repeatable method for defeating the common supernatural enemies without relying on an unsupported weakness chart.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I defeat the enemies in Hell Is Us?
Use the specially forged swords, spears or axes, identify whether the enemy has Lymbic growths, destroy those growths first, then build Lymbic energy with ordinary attacks and spend the stronger attack during a staggered or exposed opening.
How do you kill Hollow Walkers?
Reviews call the recurring supernatural enemies Hollow Walkers. Their practical counter is the forged melee system; modern weapons are not the intended solution. Remove protective Lymbic growths on variants before attacking the main body.
What are the Lymbic weaknesses?
The documented mechanic is that some variants have bulbous Lymbic growths that must be destroyed before the body can take meaningful damage. No verified source establishes a universal emotion, element or weapon weakness for every broad enemy type.
Do I have to parry in Hell Is Us?
No. A GamesRadar+ review found dodging, direct attacks and occasional blocking viable, and reported that no enemy type required mastery of parrying. Use parries when a single attack is familiar, but dodge when timing is uncertain or the attack is multi-hit, group-based or unblockable.

Treat the drone as support. Its modules can distract, stun or damage enemies, creating safer melee openings, but the forged weapon system remains the core way to fight these creatures.
Are dual axes or greatswords better against a specific enemy type?
No confirmed type-specific matchup is established. GamesRadar+ characterizes dual axes as faster but weaker and greatswords as slower but harder-hitting, so choose according to your preferred timing, reach and ability to disengage safely.
The Bottom Line
Use forged melee weapons, destroy Lymbic growths before attacking protected bodies, build energy with ordinary strikes, and spend stronger attacks during staggered openings. Preserve stamina, dodge dangerous patterns, and use parries or drone modules as optional tools.
