There is no evidence-based universal list of seven popular Windows apps everyone should refuse to install. Whether an app belongs on your PC depends on what it does, what its vendor says it collects, and whether you are comfortable with its settings and trade-offs. Start by checking the app’s own privacy controls and policy: Windows privacy settings may not govern desktop apps.
Why Windows privacy settings may not protect you from every desktop app
Windows privacy controls do not necessarily apply to traditional desktop programs. Microsoft says desktop apps may not use Windows permission prompts and may not appear in the relevant privacy-settings lists. Its guidance is to review the app’s own settings and privacy policy, and install only from a source you trust.
That distinction matters: a setting that limits access for Microsoft Store apps should not be assumed to limit a desktop program in the same way. Check the specific app’s controls rather than treating a Windows toggle as a complete privacy audit.
Three examples worth evaluating on their own merits
The available policy disclosures below can help you decide what to investigate. They describe vendors’ stated practices; a disclosure alone does not prove an app is harmful, that data is misused, or that every user should avoid it.

CCleaner: distinguish local cleaning from service data
CCleaner’s Products Policy, last updated in February 2026, says selected cleaning functions may process browser form data, cookies, installed browsers and plugins, downloaded-item records, files, Windows profile names, and Registry entries locally on the device, and that this cleaning data is not sent to CCleaner’s environment. Separately, the policy describes service and device data, including IP address, hardware information, Windows language and locale, and application information, along with stated purposes and retention periods. Those are distinct categories; the policy does not say that all information involved in local cleaning is uploaded.
If you are considering a cleaner, ask whether you need its functions and review its current policy and settings. The policy is the vendor’s account, not independent verification of its implementation.

Google services: service-level collection is not a Chrome-specific finding
Google’s Privacy Policy, effective May 26, 2026, says Google collects information about apps, browsers, and devices used to access Google services. The examples include identifiers, browser type and settings, device and operating-system settings, IP address, crash reports, system activity, and request date, time, and referrer. The policy explains that collection occurs when a Google service on a device contacts Google’s servers.

This is a disclosure about Google services overall. It does not, by itself, establish a separate finding about Chrome or show that every listed data type is collected in every interaction. Consider which Google services you use, the account and activity controls available to you, and whether their benefits justify the data practices described.

A practical checklist before installing any app
- Identify the app type and source. Determine whether it is a Microsoft Store app or a desktop app, and get it from a source you trust.
- Read the app’s own privacy policy. Look for what data is collected or processed, why, whether processing is local or remote, and how long information is retained.
- Inspect in-app privacy settings. Check what you can disable, limit, export, or delete. Do not assume Windows privacy controls cover a desktop program.
- Check installation and update choices. Review the installer’s options and the app’s update behavior. Do not attribute unwanted additions or Windows-setting changes to a particular app without evidence about that app.
- Decide whether the function is worth the trade-off. If you do not need the app’s main feature, skipping installation is the simplest way to avoid its additional software and data practices. If you do need it, look for a meaningful alternative that provides the same function and examine that alternative using the same checks.
Windows 10 support status is a separate issue
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. It says free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided for that system. This is an operating-system lifecycle issue, not evidence against any particular app. App privacy decisions and the security implications of using an unsupported Windows version are separate questions.

In a February 9, 2026 Windows Experience Blog post, Microsoft Distinguished Engineer Logan Iyer described a goal of making app and AI-agent behavior more transparent, decisions reversible, and access limited to approved capabilities. That platform direction does not establish how any particular third-party app behaves today. For an individual app, rely on its own documented settings and practices rather than inferring its behavior from a general Windows announcement.
