A SaaS business should advertise on a review site only when its target buyers use that site while comparing software—and only as a measured campaign, not as a shortcut to better reviews or rankings. Review-site ads can buy visibility or clicks; whether they generate qualified pipeline at an acceptable acquisition cost depends on your audience, offer, and measurement.

What does advertising on a review site buy?

Paid visibility is distinct from maintaining a vendor profile or collecting customer reviews. G2’s public plans page lists advertising alongside those other offerings, but package details and prices can change; confirm current terms directly with the platform. G2’s plans page can help you distinguish the options.

Pay-per-click placements

G2 describes G2 Clicks as pay-per-click advertising through sponsored listings and referral links. G2 says activation does not change a vendor’s organic category ranking or inclusion in G2 Market Reports. It also notes that traffic available for Clicks can depend on Paid Promotions inventory.

Reserved placements

G2 Paid Promotions lets vendors purchase placements on eligible category and competitor-alternative pages. G2’s documentation describes limited inventory and a default three-month campaign duration. Placement availability and terms can change, so confirm eligible pages, positions, duration, and current conditions before committing.

G2’s advertising page says its marketplace reaches “over 100 million software buyers.” That is G2’s own audience claim, not an independently verified count or a forecast of impressions available to your campaign. G2 advertising is the source of that statement.

How can you decide whether a campaign is worth testing?

Assess the opportunity before comparing it with other channels. Ask the platform for the campaign mechanics and terms that apply to your category, then check whether the likely audience and economics fit your business.

  • Audience fit: Do your target buyers use this specific site and category during active evaluation? Look for evidence from customers, sales conversations, and your existing referral data.
  • Placement mechanics: Is the offer pay-per-click, a sponsored listing, a time-limited placement, or profile and lead-generation support? Confirm the pages, positions, targeting, and how paid visibility is labeled.
  • Cost and commitment: Verify minimum spend, campaign duration, renewal terms, eligibility, geography, and available inventory directly. Do not assume one platform’s terms apply to another.
  • Measurement: Agree on tagged destinations and an attribution window. Track qualified leads, sales-accepted opportunities, influenced pipeline, conversion, and customer acquisition cost—not clicks alone.
  • Trust and data: Review the platform’s review-solicitation rules, disclosure requirements, data-use terms, and process for flagging questionable reviews.

Set a baseline using your normal channel economics, then run a bounded campaign in a category where you have reason to believe your buyers are present. Continue only if attributable qualified outcomes justify the cost. Treat a platform’s case studies and testimonials as inputs for a hypothesis, not independent evidence of the return your company should expect.

How should you protect review credibility and comply with the rules?

Paid placement should not be confused with an independent rating, review, or editorial recommendation. The FTC warns that comparison sites may present themselves as unbiased while selling better ratings, reviews, or placement. Its marketer guide says, “Don’t participate in this kind of deceptive advertising.” If a platform sells reputation or visibility benefits, the commercial relationship should be clearly disclosed. FTC guidance for marketers explains the concern.

  • Do not pay for favorable ratings, positive reviews, or ranking positions presented as independent.
  • Do not ask only customers you expect to be positive to submit reviews. Follow each platform’s current solicitation rules.
  • Never make an incentive conditional, explicitly or implicitly, on positive sentiment. The FTC says incentives for consumer reviews cannot be conditioned on a particular sentiment, and failing to disclose incentives may violate the FTC Act. Some platforms prohibit incentives altogether. FTC Q&A on the Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule covers the rule.
  • Do not misuse reporting tools to suppress honest negative reviews or use campaign terms that suggest customers must be favorable or cannot criticize your business.
  • If you use reviews or testimonials in ads, disclose material connections clearly in context. The FTC notes that a disclosure tool alone may not always make a relationship clear. See its Endorsement Guides FAQ.

Platform-specific rules matter. For example, G2 says it does not require only positive reviews and labels business-partner reviews, which do not count toward its G2 Score. That is G2’s stated policy, not a rule to assume for other sites; consult the current guidelines for each platform. G2’s community guidelines describe its approach. The FTC’s general advertising guidance also requires claims to be truthful, non-deceptive, and evidence-based, while the Consumer Review Fairness Act protects people’s ability to share honest opinions about a business.

What the available evidence cannot tell you

The cited platform materials explain G2’s ad formats and stated policies, but they do not establish that review-site ads outperform search, events, partnerships, or other B2B SaaS channels. They also do not establish a reliable independent benchmark for incremental pipeline, conversion lift, or return on ad spend. Treat expected performance as a company-specific hypothesis to test.

G2 is the only platform in the sources here with verified, detailed advertising mechanics. Current vendor advertising products and terms for Capterra and TrustRadius are not established here, so check their official documentation before evaluating an offer or making claims about how paid visibility affects rankings.
