Keep a subscription only when its current value justifies its full renewal cost and contract obligations. To decide, find every recurring charge (including annual renewals), calculate the true yearly price, compare that price with how you actually use the service and with realistic alternatives, then check the cancellation terms before choosing to keep, pause, downgrade or cancel. There is no official universal rule such as “use it twice a month” or a fixed cost-per-use limit; the right decision depends on your budget, needs, substitutes and contract.
Start with a complete list of recurring charges
You cannot judge value until you know what you are paying for. Review recent bank and credit-card statements and your bank’s regular-payment or recurring-payment view. Search for service names, parent companies and payment processors that may appear differently from the product name you recognize.
A monthly scan can miss annual renewals. Look back far enough to identify charges that occur once a year, and include subscriptions billed quarterly or on another schedule. MoneyHelper advises checking a longer period for this reason. Do not assume that a charge is unimportant because it appeared only once in the statements you reviewed.

For each recurring charge, record:
- the provider and the service you receive;
- the amount and billing interval;
- the date of the last renewal and the next expected renewal;
- the current full price, including the end date of any introductory offer;
- the cancellation notice deadline, minimum term and possible early-exit fee; and
- the payment method used.

Convert every price to a yearly cost
Periodic prices can look small when viewed one payment at a time. Convert each charge to the amount you would pay over a full year at the current rate. Multiply a monthly charge by 12, a quarterly charge by four, and an annual charge by one. If the billing period is different, multiply by the number of those periods in a year.
Use the renewal price rather than an introductory price when deciding whether to keep the service. Note when a promotion ends and whether the next charge will be higher. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises checking that the renewal price matches your expectations. A discount that expires soon does not represent the ongoing cost.
Calculate the cost for the period you realistically expect to keep the subscription. If you will use it for only part of the coming year, write down that shorter commitment as well, but still check the annual renewal because the contract may renew automatically unless you give notice.

Do not turn the calculation into a rigid cost-per-use test. Official consumer guidance does not establish a universal number of uses or a maximum acceptable price per use. A service used once can be worth keeping if it meets an important need, while a heavily used service can still be poor value if a cheaper option provides the same result.
Judge value from your actual use and current need
Check when you last used it
Look at your recent activity rather than your intention to use the service someday. Ask when you last opened, watched, read, booked or otherwise used it, and how often that use has occurred during the period you have been paying. If you have not used it, treat that as a strong reason to examine cancellation or a pause, not as proof by itself that cancellation is always correct.

Identify the need it serves now
Describe the job the subscription performs today: access to particular content, a work function, a recurring household need, a professional requirement or another specific benefit. Then ask whether that need still exists. A service can remain valuable even when use is seasonal or irregular if you know when you will need it and the contract lets you stop before the next unwanted renewal.
Compare realistic alternatives
Check whether another service you already pay for, a free option, a lower-cost plan or a one-off purchase would meet the same need. Compare what you would actually lose: specific features, access rights, saved data, convenience, support or contract benefits. The alternative must be available to you and adequate for the task, not merely cheaper on paper.
Write down the current annual cost, expected use, the need served and the best substitute for every charge. This creates an explicit decision instead of relying on the fact that the payment has become familiar.
Use a keep-or-cancel decision framework

This framework is a practical application of consumer guidance to examine routine use, annual cost and cancellation terms. It is not a published scoring formula. You do not need to assign points or reach a particular usage threshold.
Read the renewal and exit terms before acting
Find the service’s current terms, account settings and cancellation instructions. Confirm:

- the next renewal date and the time zone, if one is stated;
- how much will be charged at renewal;
- how far in advance you must give notice;
- whether there is a minimum term or remaining balance;
- whether an annual plan renews automatically;
- the permitted cancellation route, such as an online account path, written request or telephone process; and
- any early-exit fee, refund rule or loss of access after cancellation.
Annual contracts can require advance notice. Record the renewal date and set a calendar reminder before the applicable notice deadline, as MoneyHelper suggests. A reminder is useful only if it is early enough for the provider’s stated process; there is no single notice period that applies to every service or country.

A lower price is useful only if you will use the service during the discounted period and understand what price, term or renewal follows. A pause may preserve your account while stopping charges for a defined period; a downgrade may remove features; neither option should be treated as cancellation unless the provider confirms that it is.
Choose among keep, pause, downgrade and cancel
Keep
Keep the subscription when the service solves a current need, you use it often enough for your own circumstances, the full renewal cost fits your budget and the contract terms are acceptable. Note the next renewal date anyway so that the decision remains deliberate.
Pause or downgrade
Check these options when your need is temporary or the current tier includes features you do not use. Verify the exact pause duration, charges during the pause, reactivation date, reduced features and future renewal price. If the provider automatically resumes billing, put that date on your calendar.
Cancel
Cancel when the need has ended, use is too limited for the cost, an adequate alternative exists or the renewal terms no longer work for you. Follow the provider’s stated cancellation route rather than assuming that deleting an app, removing a card or stopping a bank instruction ends the agreement.

Do not confuse stopping payment with cancelling the contract
A Direct Debit, standing order and recurring card payment are different payment arrangements. Blocking one payment route may stop money moving through that route without ending the underlying subscription contract.
MoneyHelper says that cancelling a Direct Debit does not necessarily cancel the contract and advises contacting the company to check whether money is owed. The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) likewise says that a customer remains responsible for money owed under a contract when cancelling a recurring card payment. U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) guidance distinguishes cancelling an ongoing subscription from merely changing how it is paid.

Because terminology, rights and procedures vary by country, payment method and contract, contact the provider about cancellation and contact your bank or card issuer about the payment instruction. Do not present a payment block alone as proof that the subscription has ended.
Cancel in a way you can prove
- Open the provider’s account, help or billing area and follow the stated cancellation instructions. If the provider requires a written request or telephone call, use that route.
- State clearly that you are cancelling the subscription, identify the account and service, and ask for the effective cancellation date and any final amount due.
- Save a copy of the request, the date and time, the confirmation screen or email, and any case or reference number. If you speak by phone, record the representative’s name or identifier and the details of the conversation.
- Check whether access ends immediately or continues until the paid-through date, and note whether a refund is available under the terms.
- Review later bank and card statements for the expected final charge and for any further renewal. The FTC recommends retaining cancellation requests and checking statements after cancellation.
If you are close to a notice deadline, complete the provider’s process immediately and keep evidence of when you did it. A request made after the contractual deadline may not prevent the next renewal, depending on the agreement and local law.
What to do if charges continue or were unauthorized
First confirm that the cancellation was completed, rather than merely started, and compare the charge date with the effective cancellation date. Contact the provider with your confirmation and ask for an explanation and correction. Keep the statements and correspondence.

If the company continues charging after cancellation, the FTC’s U.S. consumer guidance describes disputing the charge with the card issuer. That is jurisdiction-specific guidance, not a guarantee of a particular result everywhere. Contact your payment provider promptly and ask which dispute or unauthorized-payment process applies to your payment method and location. Continue keeping records of the original cancellation, confirmation and subsequent charges.
If you do not recognize the subscription at all, treat it as a possible unauthorized payment and contact the bank or card issuer through its established fraud or dispute channel. Do not rely solely on deleting an account or replacing a payment card to resolve an underlying billing dispute.
Account for location and changing rules
The practical audit is broadly useful, but legal rights and payment terminology are not universal. The guidance cited here combines UK sources (MoneyHelper and the FCA) with U.S. sources (the FTC and CFPB). Notice periods, refund rights, recurring-payment controls and dispute procedures can differ by jurisdiction, contract wording and payment method.

That announcement alone does not establish the rule’s current status or how it applies to your subscription. Check current official information for your location before relying on a particular legal requirement.
Why a subscription audit can matter at household scale
A 2026 UK Government policy announcement estimated 155 million active subscriptions in the UK, with nearly 10 million believed to be unwanted. The same announcement estimated that the proposed government crackdown could save consumers around £400 million each year. These are government estimates connected with that policy announcement, not a measured probability that any individual subscription is unwanted and not a guaranteed saving for a particular household.
The estimates illustrate why annual renewals and forgotten services deserve attention, but your own statements and contract terms remain the evidence for your decision.
A repeatable subscription review checklist
- Review recent bank and credit-card statements and the bank’s regular-payment view.
- Look back far enough to catch annual and other infrequent renewals.
- Record provider, amount, interval, last renewal, next renewal and notice deadline.
- Convert each charge to a yearly cost at both the current and expected renewal price.
- Check when you last used the service and what current need it meets.
- Compare an included service, free option, lower-cost plan or one-off purchase that could meet the same need.
- Read the minimum term, cancellation route, notice requirement, penalty and refund terms.
- Evaluate a pause, downgrade or retention offer by expected use, not price alone.
- Cancel through the provider when that is your decision; do not treat stopping a payment instruction as contract cancellation.
- Save the request and confirmation, then inspect later statements.
- If charges continue or are unauthorized, contact the provider and ask your bank or card issuer about the applicable dispute process.
The bottom line
MoneyHelper’s concise advice is: “If you don’t use it, don’t pay for it.” The practical version is more precise: identify every recurring charge, price the renewal over a year, test the service against your actual need and alternatives, read the exit terms, and keep evidence when you cancel. Keep only what earns its place in your budget under the terms that will actually apply.
