A Soulslike is more likely to suit you if you enjoy deliberate combat, learning enemy patterns, and treating repeated attempts as part of the challenge—not as wasted time. The genre is not one fixed difficulty setting: before buying, check how a specific game handles combat, retries, exploration, and ways to change your approach when you get stuck.

Will I enjoy the combat?

Soulslike combat generally rewards attention and timing more than repeated button-mashing. Bandai Namco describes its Souls combat as responding to enemy movement with deliberate attacks and evasions, learning patterns, and taking advantage of openings. If reading an opponent and choosing when to commit sounds satisfying, that is a promising sign. If you prefer fast, forgiving encounters where you can attack continuously without closely tracking an enemy, the rhythm may feel frustrating. Bandai Namco’s overview of Souls and Elden Ring is publisher-authored, so treat it as a description of mechanics and design rather than an independent review.

Controls and combat emphasis vary. If the feel of a game is your main concern, watch representative gameplay before buying; a short description cannot tell you whether its timing and movement will feel good to you.

Does dying and retrying sound motivating or draining?

Expect to learn through attempts rather than assuming the first attempt should succeed. Discussing Dark Souls, director Hidetaka Miyazaki described the intended loop: “The main concept has not changed: You try something, die, learn from your mistakes, and eventually overcome those mistakes.” That is a statement of design intent, not a guarantee that every player will find the process fair or enjoyable. ELDEN RING: Tarnished Edition - Nintendo Switch 2
  • ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition contains the Elden Ring Base Game + Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion + Additional Content (including Torrent Skins, New Armors, and More...)
  • MASSIVE OPEN WORLD
  • DEEP, CUSTOMIZABLE COMBAT
  • NEW STARTING CLASSES
  • NEW PLAYER-FRIENDLY ENHANCEMENTS
  • Likely a good fit: you enjoy noticing what went wrong, adjusting your timing or strategy, and seeing progress across attempts.
  • Potentially a poor fit: repeated failure quickly stops being interesting, or you mainly want a low-pressure experience that keeps the story moving.

There is no player-preference statistic here that can predict your reaction. The useful test is your own: does the idea of gradually solving a demanding fight appeal to you?

Can I change my approach if I get stuck?

That depends on the game. Elden Ring gives players open-world space to explore, develop a build, change equipment, use summons or Spirit Ashes, and return to a difficult encounter later. These are ways to affect the challenge, not a conventional easy-mode setting. Miyazaki said of Elden Ring, “We don’t try to force difficulty or make things hard for the sake of it.” His comment describes the developers’ intent; it cannot guarantee how difficult the game will feel to you. Sekiro offers a different set of choices, including stealth, movement, and prosthetic tools. Its publisher’s interview says that direct confrontation may be as challenging as, or more challenging than, earlier FromSoftware games. That illustrates why a genre label alone cannot tell you what getting stuck will feel like. Activision’s interview with FromSoftware about Sekiro

How do the games differ in the kind of challenge they offer?

Use the specific game’s structure and tools—not a universal difficulty ranking—to make your decision. These official publisher and developer descriptions show meaningful differences, but they are not a complete comparison of every Soulslike.

Game Structure and options when stuck Combat and strategic choices
Elden Ring Open world; players can leave an impasse, explore elsewhere, and return later. The described options include summons, Spirit Ashes, builds, and equipment. Deliberate Souls combat, with broad weapon and equipment choices described by Bandai Namco.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Stealth and movement are among the approaches described in the publisher interview. Prosthetic tools and combat choices shape its action style; the publisher warns direct confrontation may be at least as challenging as earlier FromSoftware titles.
Dark Souls Bandai Namco describes earlier Souls structures as more linear, with branching paths. Miyazaki describes trying, dying, learning from mistakes, and eventually overcoming them as the intended loop.

What should I check before buying?

  1. Decide whether the retry loop appeals to you. Picture learning a fight over several attempts. If that sounds like problem-solving, keep considering the game; if it sounds like an obstacle to the experience you want, choose a different kind of game.
  2. Check what the game lets you do when progress stalls. Look for its actual options: leaving to explore, changing equipment or a build, summoning help, using stealth, or mastering a particular encounter. Do not assume every Soulslike includes Elden Ring’s options.
  3. Watch representative gameplay. Focus on ordinary combat, movement, and how fights are approached—not only a trailer or a highlight reel. This is especially useful if timing and control feel matter more to you than setting or story.
  4. Verify the exact product listing. Check the platform, region, format, and current price on the storefront you plan to use. The Steam listing for Elden Ring establishes a Steam product page; it does not establish current prices elsewhere or availability of a physical edition.

Which game is a reasonable starting point?

If you want a Soulslike but are concerned about being trapped at one difficult encounter, Elden Ring is a reasonable example to investigate because its open world allows players to explore elsewhere and try different builds, equipment, and support options. That flexibility does not make it an easy-mode game or guarantee it will suit you. If you are more interested in stealth, movement, and prosthetic tools, Sekiro has a distinct approach, but its publisher cautions that taking enemies head-on can be very challenging.
