Most Docker failures become straightforward once you identify the layer that is broken: daemon, image build, container startup, application runtime, network, storage, permissions, or host integration. Start with docker info to test daemon reachability, then collect the container status, exit code, and logs before changing configuration. This guide maps the common symptoms to safe, reversible fixes on Linux, macOS Docker Desktop, Windows/WSL2, and rootless installations.

Classify the failure before changing anything

Docker Engine combines a long-running dockerd daemon, a command-line client, and managed images, containers, networks, and volumes. A command can fail because the client cannot reach the daemon, because an image cannot be built, because a container cannot be created, or because the application inside a running container is unhealthy. Treating all of these as “a Docker problem” leads to destructive fixes such as deleting volumes or rebuilding every image.

What you observe Likely layer First check
The CLI says it cannot connect to the daemon Daemon or host integration docker info, then daemon or Desktop VM logs
A build stops at a Dockerfile step Build context, Dockerfile, registry, package access, or architecture Read the first failing BuildKit step
The container exits immediately Startup command or application runtime docker ps -a, exit code, command, and logs
“Port is already allocated” or “address already in use” Host port ownership or container networking Find the process or container holding the host port
A mount is missing, denied, or contains unexpected files Host path, Desktop sharing, UID/GID, or mount masking Verify the path, sharing permission, and ownership
Networking works on one setup but not another Network membership, DNS, bind address, rootless driver, or host forwarding Inspect networks, service names, DNS, and the process bind address

Record the exact command and error text. Include the image tag or digest, Docker and host versions, platform, and whether the engine is rootful or rootless. Those details determine which remedies are safe.

A reliable first-pass diagnostic workflow

  1. Test the daemon. Run docker info. This operating-system-independent check confirms whether the client can reach a running engine and displays useful server details. If it fails, do not troubleshoot the application or image yet.
  2. Check client and server versions. Run docker version and note both sides. A client that reaches the daemon can still expose compatibility or API-version problems.
  3. Determine whether a container exists and whether it stopped. Run docker ps -a. A container that is absent has a creation or Compose-selection problem; one shown as exited has a startup or runtime problem.
  4. Inspect state without guessing. Run docker inspect <container>. Look at the configured command, entrypoint, environment, mounts, network attachments, restart policy, and the recorded exit state.
  5. Read the application output. Run docker logs --tail=200 <container>. Capture both normal output and errors before restarting repeatedly, because a restart policy can otherwise hide the original failure.
  6. Check the host boundary. For published services, verify the host port and process that owns it. For mounts, verify the host path and Desktop file-sharing permission. For networking, verify that both containers are on the intended network and that the application listens on an address reachable from that network.
  7. Change one variable at a time. Prefer a reversible change such as a different host port, a corrected path, or a temporary command override. Record the result before trying the next hypothesis.

When Docker cannot connect to the daemon

Use docker info as the dividing line

If docker info returns server information, the daemon is reachable and the problem is probably at the build, container, network, storage, or application layer. If it reports that it cannot connect, check the engine service or the Docker Desktop virtual machine instead of changing container settings.

Linux service logs

On Linux, inspect the service journal with:

journalctl -xu docker.service

Also check the distribution’s syslog or messages log if the journal does not contain the startup failure. Look for an invalid daemon configuration, a failed filesystem or socket setup, storage-driver errors, or a resource exhaustion message. Correct the reported cause and restart the service through the normal service manager; do not repeatedly delete Docker’s data directory, because that can remove images, containers, and volumes.

Docker Desktop on macOS and Windows/WSL2

Docker Desktop runs the engine inside a managed virtual machine. Its VM service diagnostics are written to an init.log file. Use the Desktop Troubleshoot area and inspect that log when the application opens but the engine is unhealthy, repeatedly stops, or cannot initialize. If the engine is healthy but a bind mount fails, move to file-sharing and path checks rather than reinstalling Desktop.

Enable daemon debug logging only temporarily

Debug logging can reveal socket, storage, networking, or authorization details that ordinary logs omit, but it also produces more output and may expose sensitive configuration. Enable it only for the reproduction, collect the relevant failure, then revert the setting and restart the daemon. Leaving debug mode enabled makes later diagnosis noisier and can increase log volume.

Why a container exits immediately

Confirm the exit code and command

A container lives only as long as its main process. A shell that receives no interactive input, a one-shot command that completed successfully, or an application that terminates on a configuration error will all produce an exited container. Run:

docker ps -a
docker inspect --format '{{.State.ExitCode}} {{.State.Error}} {{.Config.Cmd}}' <container>

An exit code of zero usually means the configured process finished normally; a nonzero code indicates an error, but the code has meaning only in the context of that application. Check the image’s entrypoint and command, required environment variables, configuration-file paths, and working directory.

Read startup output before changing the image

Use docker logs <container> and inspect the first error. If the process needs a shell, a foreground mode, a configuration file, or a writable directory, correct that requirement in the run command, Compose configuration, or image. Do not add an arbitrary long-running command merely to keep the container alive; that masks the real startup failure and changes the process Docker is meant to supervise.

Check restart behavior

A restart policy can make a failing container appear to be continuously starting and stopping. Inspect the policy and temporarily remove or disable it while diagnosing. Once the application starts reliably and its health behavior is understood, restore the intended policy.

Why docker logs is empty

docker logs displays what the container’s configured logging path receives from the process’s standard output and standard error. It is not a universal view of every application log.

  • The application may write exclusively to files inside the container or to a mounted host directory.
  • The configured logging driver may send records to another destination instead of retaining them for the CLI.
  • The process may exit before emitting output, or its output may be buffered.
  • You may be inspecting a different container than the one that handled the request.

Confirm the container ID, command, and logging driver with docker inspect. Check the application’s configured log path and the corresponding mount. If an external logging driver is intentional, read from that driver’s destination; changing the image will not make the CLI display records it was never configured to receive.

Build failures: isolate the first broken step

Read BuildKit output in order

Start with the first failing BuildKit step, not the final cascade of errors. Verify that the build context contains the files referenced by COPY and ADD, that the Dockerfile path is the one you intended, and that the base-image name and tag exist for the target architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check external dependencies

Package-manager failures commonly come from registry authentication, DNS, proxy settings, certificate validation, or temporary repository errors. Test access from the build environment and confirm that the requested package is available for the selected base image and architecture. A successful build on one machine does not prove that the same repository or architecture is available elsewhere.

Use a clean build as a test, not a ritual

Run a cache-free build when you need to distinguish stale cache data from a deterministic failure:

docker build --no-cache -t your-image:diagnostic .

If the clean build succeeds, inspect cache-sensitive steps and invalidation rules instead of permanently disabling cache. If it fails at the same step, focus on the Dockerfile, context, dependency source, or architecture. Rebuilding without a cache does not repair a wrong path, unavailable package, or invalid base-image tag.

Port conflicts and container networking

Fix “port is already allocated” safely

The host port in a publish rule can be owned by another process or another container. Identify the owner before stopping anything. On Linux and macOS, tools such as ss or lsof can show the listening process; on Windows, use the platform’s network tools to map the port to a PID. Check existing containers with docker ps and their published ports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop the owner only when you know it is safe to do so. Otherwise publish the container on an unused host port while leaving its internal listening port unchanged. For example, mapping host port 8081 to a service listening on container port 80 changes the host URL but not the application’s internal configuration. Update clients, reverse proxies, and health checks that use the host port.

Diagnose container-to-container failures

  • Confirm both containers are attached to the same user-defined network with docker network inspect <network>.
  • Use the service or container name that exists on that network rather than assuming localhost refers to another container. Inside a container, localhost points back to that same container.
  • Check that the server process binds to an address reachable from the network, not only to a loopback address.
  • Verify DNS resolution, destination port, firewall rules, and any host-forwarding requirement.
  • Inspect the application’s own connection error; a refused connection, timeout, and name-resolution failure indicate different layers.

Docker’s host-forwarding and DNS behavior can differ between native Linux and Desktop virtualized environments. Compare the platform and network mode before copying a Linux-only workaround to Desktop.

Rootless mode: ports and network behavior change

Rootless Docker runs without a privileged daemon and therefore has additional restrictions. Binding a privileged port such as 80 can fail when the host’s unprivileged-port threshold is higher. The simplest fix is to publish a non-privileged host port and place a suitable front end in front of it if port 80 or 443 is required.

Lowering the threshold or applying a documented capability/sysctl approach may make privileged publishing possible, but it changes host security and operational assumptions. Make that change only when you understand who can bind the port, how it persists across updates, and how it affects other services.

The rootless network driver also affects throughput and whether the original source IP is visible to the application. If an application depends on source-IP auditing, performance, or a particular forwarding mode, verify the driver’s behavior in the target environment rather than assuming rootful networking semantics.

Volume mounts, missing files, and permission errors

Verify the host path first

For a bind mount, check that the source path exists, is the intended file or directory, and is spelled correctly. A typo can cause Docker to create or use an unexpected path, while a file mount can hide a directory that was present in the image. Inspect the effective mounts with docker inspect <container>.

Grant Desktop access to the containing location

On Docker Desktop, the drive or folder containing a project may need to be allowed in file-sharing settings. This is especially important when the project is outside the default locations. A healthy engine can therefore coexist with a mount error: the failure is host integration, not daemon availability.

Compare UID/GID ownership

Inside the container, identify the application user with id and compare that UID/GID with the mounted path’s ownership and mode on the host. A process that runs as a non-root user may be unable to read or write a path owned by a different identity. Correct the ownership or permissions deliberately; making everything world-writable is fast but weakens isolation.

Choose a named volume when host semantics are the problem

Named volumes avoid many host-filesystem differences and are often a better fit for database data or applications that require consistent ownership. On Windows, shared-volume permission defaults can conflict with software that expects strict Unix-style ownership. A named or otherwise non-host-mounted volume can remove that mismatch, at the cost of less direct editing from the host.

Do not switch storage types without considering persistence and backup. A named volume survives container replacement, while deleting a volume can destroy data even when the image and container are disposable.

Windows and WSL2-specific failures

Convert scripts from CRLF to LF

A Unix shell script copied from a Windows editor with CRLF line endings can fail in a Linux container with a confusing syntax or interpreter error. Convert the file with dos2unix or configure the editor and repository to preserve LF endings for scripts. Rebuild after conversion so the corrected file is actually included in the image.

Find the owning PID before reclaiming a port

When Windows reports that a port is already allocated, map the port to its owning PID with the platform’s network tools, then identify the corresponding program or container. Stop it only after confirming that it is not a required host service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Desktop troubleshooting for integration issues

If docker info succeeds but mounts, networking, or WSL2 integration fail, inspect Docker Desktop’s Troubleshoot area, file-sharing permissions, WSL2 integration settings, and the VM’s init.log. Reinstalling the application should be a last resort after collecting those diagnostics.

Choose fixes by reversibility and risk

Fix Useful when Trade-off
Publish a different host port A host process owns the requested port Clients must use the new host port
Correct a bind path or Desktop sharing rule A file or directory is missing or denied Changing the path can expose different data; verify before starting stateful services
Align UID/GID ownership The container user cannot access a mount Host ownership changes affect other users and services
Use a named volume Host filesystem permissions or line-ending behavior interfere with application data Files are less convenient to edit directly from the host
Run a cache-free build You need to test whether cache is masking a deterministic build issue Slower builds; it does not fix an invalid dependency or Dockerfile
Lower a rootless port threshold or add capabilities A rootless service genuinely must bind a privileged port Security and operational impact; prefer a non-privileged port when possible
Enable daemon debug logging Normal daemon logs do not explain startup or runtime behavior More volume and potentially sensitive detail; revert afterward

What to collect before escalation

Escalation is appropriate when the daemon remains unresponsive after service or Desktop checks, the problem reproduces on a supported clean setup, or the evidence points to a platform defect or enterprise subscription issue. Provide a compact, reproducible record:

  • The exact command or Compose invocation and complete error text.
  • Docker client and server versions, host operating system, architecture, and rootful/rootless mode.
  • The image tag or digest and the first failing BuildKit step, if the issue is a build.
  • Output from docker info, plus docker ps -a and the affected container’s exit code.
  • Relevant daemon logs, Desktop init.log details, and container logs, with secrets removed.
  • The Compose configuration or minimal command that reproduces the problem.
  • What changed immediately before the failure and which reversible tests you already performed.

This evidence lets support or issue maintainers distinguish a daemon defect from a port owner, an inaccessible host path, a UID/GID mismatch, or an application that simply exits by design.

A practical stopping rule

Stop changing Docker-wide configuration once the failing layer is localized. A daemon error belongs in daemon logs; an exited process belongs in container state and application output; a mount error belongs at the host-path and ownership boundary; a port conflict belongs with the process that owns the port. Keeping those boundaries separate prevents data loss, preserves security defaults, and turns a vague Docker failure into a testable sequence of fixes.
