When AI-generated code fails a test, do not immediately rewrite the function or the test. First preserve the failure, capture the exact command and output, and determine whether the defect is in the implementation, the expectation, the test setup, or the environment. Use the AI assistant to generate hypotheses and explain code—not to declare the cause. Confirm every hypothesis against the traceback, assertion values, call stack, runtime state, project requirements, and a fresh test run.
What a failing test actually tells you
A red test proves that an observed result differs from what the test currently expects, or that execution could not complete. It does not, by itself, prove that the generated implementation is wrong. The test may have an invalid expectation, missing fixture, broken import, incorrect configuration, unavailable dependency, timezone assumption, race condition, or another environmental problem.
Start by recording four facts:
- The exact command, including flags and working directory.
- The failing test name and file.
- The complete relevant exception, traceback, assertion message, or build output.
- The expected value, actual value, input, and whether the failure repeats.
Keep crashes and incorrect results separate. An exception identifies an operation that could not complete. A wrong-result failure means the program ran, but its output does not match the required behavior. Those cases require different evidence and debugging paths.

1. Read the project’s test instructions
Check the README, contribution guide, package scripts, build configuration, and continuous-integration workflow for the supported runtime, dependency installation, environment variables, and test command. Identify the framework rather than guessing it. A Python project may use pytest or unittest; a JavaScript project may expose a script such as npm test. Use the command documented by that project.
2. Run the narrowest relevant test
- Run the single failing test or test file, for example
pytest path/to/test_file.py::test_name -qwhen the project uses pytest. - Save the complete output, not only the final summary.
- Run it again if the result may be intermittent.
- Record the current working-tree status and diff so pre-existing changes are visible.
If the same failure existed before the AI-generated change, it is a baseline failure rather than evidence that the new code introduced the defect. If the test now fails differently, preserve both outputs; a changed symptom is useful evidence.
3. Capture runtime context
Note the language and runtime versions, operating system, dependency lockfile state, configuration files, locale, timezone, and relevant environment variables. Do not paste secrets into an AI prompt. Redact tokens, passwords, private URLs, and customer data while retaining the values’ types and relationships.

State the required behavior independently of the implementation
Before asking an assistant to explain a failure, write the requirement in observable terms. Include normal inputs, boundary inputs, invalid inputs, and required error behavior. Documentation, an API contract, a ticket, or a user story is a better authority than the current function body.
Expected values must be independent of the function under test. A test that calculates its expected result by calling the same potentially faulty helper can reproduce the defect and still pass. For a date conversion, specify the intended timezone and calendar rule explicitly; for a parser, specify whether unknown fields are rejected, ignored, or preserved.
| Question | Evidence to write down |
|---|---|
| What should happen? | An observable requirement, including return value, side effect, or documented exception. |
| For which inputs? | Representative, boundary, empty, malformed, and maximum-size cases that matter to the feature. |
| What happened? | The actual value, exception type and message, output, logs, and relevant state. |
| How is it verified? | The exact command, test selection, runtime, configuration, and whether the run completed. |
Classify the failure before diagnosing it
Exception, build error, or process crash
Use the exception type, message, source file, line number, and call stack to locate the failing operation. Inspect the values passed into that operation. A TypeError may indicate an implementation bug, but it may also reveal a fixture supplying the wrong type or a missing setup step. A dependency or import error points first toward installation, module paths, or configuration.

Program runs but output is wrong
Write the input, required output, and observed output side by side. Trace the value through the relevant branches and transformations. Check filtering, ordering, rounding, encoding, null handling, mutation, and error recovery. A plausible-looking output can still violate a boundary rule.
Test setup or expectation failure
Inspect fixtures, mocks, imports, test data, configuration, database state, and cleanup. Confirm that the assertion describes the requirement rather than an assumption inherited from the generated code. If a requirement changed, update the test deliberately and document why; never alter an assertion merely to obtain a green run.
Environment-, timing-, or ordering-dependent failure
A failure that appears only under a particular timezone, operating system, dependency version, process order, or timing schedule needs comparison between runs. A single log rarely identifies this class reliably.
Use the AI assistant as a hypothesis generator
Give the assistant enough context to reason about the specific failure, but keep the request falsifiable. Include the failing test, relevant implementation and test files, exact command, complete output, requirement, and checks already performed.
Use a prompt such as:
This test fails with the output below.
Requirement: [observable behavior]
Command: [exact command]
Relevant implementation and test files: [files]
Failure output:
[complete traceback or assertion]
Explain what the failure proves and what it does not prove. List the most likely causes, the evidence that would distinguish each cause, and the smallest proposed correction. Do not change tests or weaken assertions to make the run pass. After the fix, specify the exact targeted test and related-suite commands to run.
Ask for one or more possible causes, not a single confident verdict. Require the assistant to point to a line of code, runtime value, stack frame, configuration entry, or log record that would confirm each cause. If the explanation cannot be checked against an observation, it is speculation.

What to include for an exception
- The complete traceback, including the first application frame and the final exception.
- The call that triggered the failure and the relevant argument values.
- Whether the failure occurs consistently and whether it began after a particular change.
- Dependency, runtime, and configuration details that affect the operation.
What to include for an incorrect result
- The exact input, independently calculated expected result, and observed result.
- Intermediate values at the point where the result diverges.
- Ordering, locale, timezone, precision, encoding, and case-sensitivity assumptions.
- The requirement or documentation passage that defines the expected behavior.
Confirm the diagnosis with runtime evidence
Static explanation is useful, but execution determines what the program actually did. Use the debugger or temporary diagnostic logging to inspect call stacks, stack frames, local variables, return values, and state immediately before the failing operation. Microsoft’s Visual Studio debugging guidance describes this runtime context as a basis for AI-assisted diagnosis; the same principle applies in other editors and languages even when their interfaces differ.

- Set a breakpoint at the failing line and at the caller that supplied its inputs.
- Run the focused test under the debugger or with safe diagnostic logging.
- Inspect the values, types, collection lengths, timestamps, and branch conditions.
- Compare the first incorrect value with the requirement and expected result.
- Remove or appropriately gate temporary logging before committing.
Do not infer runtime state from source code alone. A variable may be transformed by a fixture, environment variable, mock, serialization layer, or earlier mutation. Likewise, an assistant may miss an import-time side effect or an asynchronous task that has not completed.
Make the smallest targeted correction
Once evidence distinguishes the cause, change only what is necessary. Preserve the test’s intent and avoid unrelated refactoring while the failure is being isolated.
When the implementation is wrong
Correct the branch, data transformation, error handling, synchronization, or configuration that violates the requirement. Add a regression test if the existing test did not capture the case, especially for a boundary or invalid input. Keep the expected value independently defined.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When the test is wrong
Change the test only when the documented behavior shows that its expectation, fixture, or setup is incorrect. Record the reason in the change description. A test that conflicts with the requirement is not made correct by forcing the implementation to satisfy it.
When setup or configuration is wrong
Repair imports, fixtures, dependency installation, environment variables, database preparation, or test isolation. Verify that the test fails for the intended reason when setup is deliberately removed or misconfigured, then restore the valid setup and rerun.
When the cause is unknown
Do not accept a broad rewrite. Add a narrow observation, reduce the input, or create a minimal reproduction that distinguishes the remaining hypotheses. Ask the assistant to propose diagnostic steps rather than another unverified patch.

Verify the patch instead of trusting a green-looking result
- Review the complete diff, including test and configuration files.
- Run the focused test and inspect its actual output and exit status.
- Run the related test file or suite to catch interactions.
- Run formatting, type checks, linting, build, or integration checks required by the project.
- Confirm that no assertions were removed, weakened, skipped, or marked as expected failures without a documented reason.
- Check that the reported test actually executed. A skipped, blocked, filtered, or never-started test is not a verified pass.
Report verification accurately. “The test passed” means the intended test ran to completion and produced the expected result in the stated environment. If a dependency or service prevented execution, say that it was not verified.
Fix “passes locally but fails in CI” failures
Compare a passing local run with a failing CI run rather than assuming the implementation changed. Inspect the runner’s operating system, language and dependency versions, lockfile use, environment variables, configuration, command-line flags, filesystem behavior, locale, timezone, network access, database state, and test order.
Timezone and date assumptions
A date assertion near midnight can produce different calendar dates when a developer’s machine uses a local timezone and the CI runner uses UTC. Make the clock or timezone explicit in the code and test, inject a controllable clock where appropriate, and assert the documented zone rather than the machine’s default.
Dependency and configuration drift
Compare resolved dependency versions, feature flags, service endpoints, secrets availability, and configuration files. Reproduce CI’s command and environment locally when possible. A lockfile that is ignored in one environment or a missing variable can look like an application defect.
Order, isolation, and shared state
Run the failing test alone and in the same order used by CI. Look for global variables, temporary files, database rows, caches, ports, and mocks that are not reset. Parallel workers can expose state leakage that a serial local run hides.
Fix intermittent tests without hiding the race
If the test passes sometimes and fails sometimes, collect logs from both outcomes. Compare timestamps, event order, worker assignment, retries, resource availability, and the exact state observed by the assertion.

Asynchronous code is a common cause. A test may check a job’s status before the job has reached a defined terminal state. Replace the timing assumption with an explicit synchronization mechanism: await the operation, subscribe to its completion event, poll with a bounded timeout for a documented state, or use a deterministic fake clock. An arbitrary sleep can make the race rarer while leaving it intact.
- Record the start and completion of the operation under test.
- Assert on a documented state transition, not elapsed time alone.
- Use bounded timeouts so a real hang fails diagnostically.
- Run the focused test repeatedly or with CI’s parallel settings after the fix.
Common AI-debugging mistakes and better alternatives
| Mistake | Why it fails | Better action |
|---|---|---|
| Accepting the first plausible explanation | Several causes can produce the same assertion or exception. | Ask what evidence would confirm or disprove each cause. |
| Changing the test to match generated output | It can encode the defect as the new expectation. | Check the requirement and keep expected values independent. |
| Removing an assertion or skipping a test | A green run no longer verifies the behavior. | Fix the implementation, setup, or documented expectation. |
| Applying a large rewrite | It changes too many variables and obscures the original cause. | Make one small, evidence-based correction. |
| Adding an arbitrary delay | It masks, rather than resolves, an asynchronous race. | Wait for a defined event or state with a bounded timeout. |
| Trusting source-only reasoning | Fixtures, configuration, mocks, and runtime values can differ from assumptions. | Inspect the call stack, variables, logs, and actual outputs. |
| Claiming success after a skipped run | The code was not exercised by the intended test. | Report blocked or skipped verification explicitly. |
A reusable debugging checklist
- Have I saved the exact command, test name, traceback or assertion, expected value, actual value, and repeatability?
- Did I run the narrowest relevant test before making another change?
- What requirement or documentation independently defines correct behavior?
- Is this an exception, wrong output, setup problem, expectation problem, environment difference, or timing/order problem?
- Did I provide the assistant with the complete relevant context and ask for falsifiable hypotheses?
- What runtime value, stack frame, log entry, or configuration detail would confirm the proposed cause?
- Did I make the smallest correction without weakening coverage?
- Did the focused test, related suite, and required checks actually run after the change?
- For CI-only failures, did I compare timezone, versions, configuration, command, and filesystem or service behavior?
- For intermittent failures, did I compare passing and failing runs and replace timing guesses with explicit synchronization?
How to interpret the final result
A reliable fix has a chain of evidence: a stated requirement, a reproducible or characterized failure, a diagnosis tied to observed state, a narrowly scoped change, and test results that were actually executed. The assistant can accelerate each step by explaining unfamiliar code and suggesting hypotheses, but the developer remains responsible for deciding whether the requirement is satisfied and whether the verification is meaningful.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does this test fail even though the generated function looks correct?
The failure may be caused by the test expectation, fixture, import, configuration, dependency, timezone, asynchronous ordering, or another runtime condition. Compare the requirement and actual runtime values before changing the function.
How should I handle a test that fails only in CI?
Compare the local and CI command, runtime and dependency versions, timezone, environment variables, configuration, filesystem, services, and test order. Reproduce CI’s conditions and fix the specific difference rather than adding a machine-specific workaround.
Should I let an AI assistant rewrite the failing test?
Only when the documented requirement proves that the test is wrong. Never weaken or remove an assertion merely to obtain a passing run; expected values should remain independent of the implementation.
What is the safest way to fix an intermittent asynchronous test?
Compare passing and failing logs, identify the missing state transition, and wait for that event or state with a bounded timeout. An arbitrary sleep can hide the race without correcting it.
