The safest in-match response is simple: stop replying, mute or ignore the abusive teammate, use only brief objective-focused pings if coordination still helps, and report specific misconduct through the game’s own system after—or, where supported, during—the match. Do not threaten a report, organize teammates against the player, or treat a bad score, unusual build, or strategic disagreement as proof of toxicity.
The exact buttons differ among MOBAs. The policy and interface examples below are documented for League of Legends; use your own game’s current help pages for other titles.
What counts as toxicity, and what is merely a bad game?
A teammate missing skill shots, choosing an unusual champion, testing an off-meta build, or disagreeing about an objective is not automatically abusive. The useful test is whether the conduct is directed at people or deliberately disrupts the match, rather than whether the player is performing poorly.
Riot Games’ Player Reporting Guide and FAQ gives League of Legends examples. Apply the distinction before muting or reporting:

A pattern can change the assessment. Repeatedly abandoning fights to sabotage the team, deliberately feeding after an argument, or directing slurs at a player is different from making several ordinary errors. Report what you can describe objectively, not your conclusion that someone is “bad” or “tilted.”
The 30-second de-escalation sequence
Use this order when chat turns personal or repeatedly unhelpful. It removes the argument from your attention before it can consume the match.
- Stop responding. Do not defend yourself, explain your score, or answer an insult with another insult. Every additional line gives the conflict another turn.
- Mute or ignore the player. Open the in-game player list, scoreboard, chat controls, or equivalent menu and use the mute/ignore option that your MOBA provides. Names and placement vary by game and patch.
- Keep only useful coordination. If the game lets you mute text or voice while retaining pings, leave that tactical channel available. If not, choose the quietest setting that still lets you play effectively.
- Send one factual call when it helps. Examples include “group for objective,” “back off,” or “ward river.” These are short instructions, not invitations to debate.
- Return attention to the game. Farm, watch the minimap, track timers, and follow your win condition. Do not monitor the muted player for new material.
- Report concrete misconduct through the official system. Do it at the appropriate point in the game, without announcing the report or asking others to join you.
Riot’s support guidance states: “The only way to handle these types of players is to mute them and continue playing the game followed by giving them a report at the end of the match.” That is platform guidance for League, not a guarantee that every MOBA uses the same controls or enforcement.
If you are unsure whether to answer
Ask whether your next message changes a game decision. If it does not identify an objective, timing, location, retreat, or other actionable fact, leave it unsent. A factual correction can become an argument when it is repeated, so make the call once and then play. You do not need to establish who started the conflict, persuade spectators that you are right, or obtain an apology before muting. The point of the sequence is to end the conversational loop, not to win it.
Set communication boundaries before the match
Some games offer communication settings, channel toggles, or a pre-game mute choice. Decide what you actually need before conflict starts:
- Team coordination: Keep pings or another low-friction tactical channel if it improves objective calls.
- Text chat: Disable or mute it when written arguments are more distracting than useful.
- Voice: Use the game’s player or channel controls if available. A physical microphone mute switch silences your outgoing audio; it does not silence incoming messages from a teammate.
- Social features: If the title provides blocking or post-match contact controls, use them after leaving the match rather than continuing the exchange.
Do not assume that a setting from one MOBA transfers to another. Look for the current game-specific labels and confirm whether muting affects text, voice, pings, party chat, or all communication.
Mute selectively or mute everything?
The right choice depends on whether the player is still providing useful information. Selective muting preserves coordination; full muting is better when every channel is being used to provoke or distract you.

Muting is not conceding that the other player is right. It is an attention-management decision. You can still make your own tactical choices and report behavior that crossed the rules.

Use objective pings instead of arguments
When coordination matters, replace explanations with one short, neutral signal. League’s support FAQ identifies Smart Ping as an alternative communication channel; other MOBAs may use different names or limits.
Useful examples
- “Group for objective” when teammates need to arrive before a neutral objective spawns.
- “Back off” when a fight is unfavorable or an enemy is missing.
- “On my way” when you are committing to a rotation.
- A location or danger ping when vision is missing or an enemy may be approaching.
Rules for low-conflict calls
- Describe the next action, not the previous mistake: “reset” is better than “why did you fight?”
- Send one or two signals, then allow time for teammates to respond.
- Do not spam pings to punish, mock, or force compliance.
- Do not use a ping to continue an argument after chat is muted.
- Accept that a teammate may choose another play; disagreement alone is not misconduct.
These scripts are practical examples, not quoted game instructions or measured interventions. The objective is to reduce words that can be interpreted as blame.
How to report without turning the report into another fight
Report the behavior, not the player’s identity, rank, score, champion, or build. A concise description such as “repeated slurs in team chat” or “left the match after an argument and stayed inactive” is more useful than “toxic feeder.” Include only conduct you actually observed.

Riot’s Player Reporting Guide and FAQ, dated June 2, 2026, says League supports reporting in the client before, during, and after a match, and also supports reporting from match history for up to five days. The available controls and wording can change, so check the current guide when you need the exact path.
- Use the in-client report control at the point the client provides it; select the behavior category that matches what occurred.
- Keep the description factual and brief. Separate harassment, hate speech, intentional disruption, AFK behavior, and other categories rather than selecting every option.
- Submit the report once. Do not repeatedly threaten to report the player, announce that you have reported them, or recruit teammates to submit coordinated reports.
- Leave the interaction after submitting. Do not carry the dispute into post-game chat or direct messages.
For another MOBA, substitute its own reporting menu and policy. The League timing, categories, and five-day match-history window should not be presented as universal rules.
Describe a pattern, not a verdict
Moderation systems can evaluate the actual match context more effectively when your report identifies what happened and when. “Three targeted slurs in team chat” communicates observable conduct; “ruined game” does not. If the concern is intentional disruption, describe the repeated action that made it appear deliberate rather than inferring a motive from a lost fight. If you only saw one missed spell or an unpopular item choice, there may be nothing reportable.
What a report can—and cannot—do
Riot says its systems can evaluate match data, chat, and a player’s report history. One report can trigger review, but the outcome depends on the severity and context of the case. A report is not an automatic penalty, and you should not promise that the reporter will receive a particular sanction or feedback.
The Instant Feedback System FAQ explains the platform’s review approach. Treat the report as a way to provide relevant evidence, not as a vote that guarantees punishment.

Why “everyone report them” can backfire
Recruiting reports turns a moderation tool into a new confrontation and can encourage players to exaggerate or report conduct that did not occur. Submit your own accurate report and let the game’s review process assess the available data.
Severe abuse deserves a faster exit from the conversation
Threats of violence, hate speech, and severe aggression are not ordinary “flaming.” Do not attempt to debate, diagnose, or de-escalate a person making those statements. Mute the account, preserve the relevant in-game context if the game provides it, and use the official reporting path.
Riot’s post “/dev: Bans for Severely Abusive Chat” says gameplay bans for severely disruptive communications begin with patch 26.5 and distinguishes severe cases from mild flame. Riot also indicated that rollout details would continue to develop. This is a League-specific policy note for the stated rollout; do not infer that another MOBA has the same ban threshold or schedule.

What to do after the match
- Exit the interaction. Do not stay in post-game chat to obtain an apology or prove that you were right.
- Complete the report if you have not already. Choose the narrowest accurate category and submit once.
- Block or restrict contact if the game offers it. Use the official control rather than replying through direct messages.
- Reset before queueing again. A short break can prevent the previous argument from shaping your next match.
If the game provides a separate support-reporting route for threats or persistent contact, follow that game’s current instructions. The available post-match and direct-message controls differ by title and were not verified here for games other than League.
Why disengagement matters, without overpromising its effect
A 2018 observational study by J. A. de Mesquita Neto and Karin Becker, “Relating conversational topics and toxic behavior effects in a MOBA game,” examined League of Legends Tribunal data. It reported that allies of toxic players were generally more affected than opponents, with lower performance and more toxic expressions, and that some teammates tolerated or copied the behavior.
That finding explains why removing hostile conversation from your attention is sensible: the social effect can spread to teammates. It does not prove that muting causes better performance, apply automatically to every MOBA, or establish a guaranteed result for an individual match. Use it as context for disengagement, not as a promise.
Common situations and the least-escalating response
A teammate insults your mechanics
Do not answer with your own score or an insult. Mute the player, then use a factual ping only if a team action still needs coordination. Report harassment if the conduct meets the game’s rules.
A teammate blames you for a lost objective
One mistake is gameplay, not necessarily toxicity. If the player keeps discussing the mistake, stop replying. If the messages become personal or abusive, mute and report the specific harassment rather than the missed objective itself.

A teammate chooses an unusual build
An off-meta choice is not reportable on that fact alone. Judge the player’s conduct: deliberate sabotage, intentional feeding, or AFK behavior is different from experimenting while trying to win.
A player refuses a call and the team loses
Strategic disagreement is not proof of griefing. Record no report unless there is observable abuse or deliberate disruption beyond the disagreement.
The player is ping-spamming
Use the game’s ping-mute or player-mute control if available. A single location or danger signal can be useful; repeated signals used to harass are a reason to remove that channel from your view.

Do not engage. Mute immediately, use the official severe-abuse reporting route, and follow any safety or support instructions the game provides. Do not promise the player a punishment or reveal what evidence you submitted.

Before applying League-specific instructions to another title, verify these points in its current help center or client:
- Does mute apply separately to text, voice, pings, party chat, or all channels?
- Can you report before the match ends, only after it ends, or from match history?
- How long does match-history reporting remain available?
- Which categories distinguish harassment, hate speech, intentional disruption, and AFK behavior?
- Is there a separate block or support route for post-match messages and threats?
- Does the publisher explain how chat, match data, or report history are reviewed?
If you cannot verify a control, describe it generically—“use the player’s mute option”—rather than importing a command or report window from another game.
Quick decision guide
- Is it a mistake, weak performance, unusual build, or disagreement? Keep playing; do not report on that fact alone.
- Is there a personal attack or repeated abuse? Stop replying and mute or ignore the player.
- Would one tactical signal still help? Keep the least disruptive channel and send a short objective call.
- Is there deliberate disruption, AFK behavior, hate speech, or a threat? Note the observable conduct and use the official report category.
- Are you tempted to announce the report or recruit teammates? Do neither; submit your own accurate report once.
This decision guide is deliberately conservative. It separates conduct that affects moderation from ordinary disagreement, while giving you an immediate way to protect your concentration.

You do not have to win an argument with a teammate to protect the match. Remove the abusive channel, communicate only the next useful action, keep playing, and submit a specific report when the conduct—not merely the result—breaks the rules. That approach limits escalation while preserving the information your team still needs.

Should I report a teammate just for playing badly?
No. In League, poor play while trying to win, an unusual champion or build, and a strategic disagreement are not reportable on those facts alone. Report observable harassment, hate speech, intentional disruption, AFK behavior, or other conduct that breaks the game’s rules.
Should I tell the teammate that I muted or reported them?
