The cheapest way to book a Delta flight depends on your exact itinerary and which benefits you already have. Compare the cash fare with the complete award checkout price, check Delta’s current Award Deals, and then test any eligible Pay with Miles balance, Companion Certificate or eCredit. Those tools have different eligibility rules and restrictions, so a low headline fare or a large mileage balance is not automatically the best deal.
This U.S.-focused guide explains four practical methods, the math behind each one, and the booking restrictions that can erase an apparent saving. Delta policies, inventory and card terms can change; confirm the live rules and your itinerary before paying.
Start with an apples-to-apples price comparison
Before choosing a payment method, record the same flight, dates, cabin and passenger count in both cash and award searches. Compare what you will actually pay at checkout, not just the number shown in the initial search results.

- Cash option: include the published fare, taxes and fees, and any fare restrictions that matter to you.
- Award option: include the SkyMiles required plus all taxes, fees and carrier-imposed charges due when the award ticket is issued.
- Card or certificate option: include the cash still due, the miles or certificate consumed, and any fare or booking limitations.
- Credit option: confirm that the eCredit is valid for the passenger and itinerary and that it can be applied to the chosen transaction.
There is no fixed Delta mileage price or universal percentage saving. Award availability, cash fares and benefits depend on route, travel date, inventory, passenger eligibility and the terms in effect when you book. A simple worksheet helps:

| Item to compare | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Total cash due | What will be charged now, including taxes and fees? |
| Miles used | How many SkyMiles leave the account, and could they be more useful on another trip? |
| Availability | Is the desired flight offered at the required cash fare, award rate or certificate fare? |
| Eligibility | Does the traveler have the required card, certificate or valid eCredit? |
| Restrictions | What flexibility, earning, seat or upgrade benefits disappear with this fare? |
| Deadlines | When must the certificate, credit or ticket be used, purchased or traveled? |
1. Compare cash fares, award prices and Delta Award Deals
Searching both payment types is the broadest way to find a lower-cost Delta itinerary. Delta publishes Award Deals, but the listed opportunities and the underlying award inventory are not permanent. Search your dates rather than assuming a deal applies to every flight or cabin.
How to run the comparison
- Search the itinerary on Delta’s website using the exact airports, dates, passengers and cabin you need.
- Note the lowest practical cash fare. “Practical” means a fare whose change, seat and earning rules suit the trip, not merely the smallest number displayed.
- Switch the search to SkyMiles or award pricing and check the same flights. Look for a listed Award Deal, but verify that the deal applies to your dates and flight.
- Proceed far enough in each booking path to see the complete total. Award travel still requires applicable taxes, fees and carrier-imposed charges at ticketing.
- Choose the option that fits both your budget and your flexibility needs. If the cash difference is small, retaining miles for a later high-priced trip may be more useful; that is an individual opportunity-cost decision, not a guaranteed rule.
Why the award total matters
A mileage fare is not a tax-free ticket. Delta’s award terms require payment of applicable taxes, fees and carrier-imposed charges when you ticket the reservation. Compare that cash amount with the taxes already included in the cash fare. Do not describe an award as “free” when a charge remains due.
Award rates can vary between flights on the same route. Moving departure time, date or airport by a small amount may reveal a lower rate, but only the live search establishes whether a suitable seat exists. A displayed Award Deal is an opportunity to investigate, not a promise that every traveler will find the advertised rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen a cash ticket can be the better value
Cash may win when the fare is unusually low, the award rate is high, or the itinerary requires flexibility that a restricted award does not provide. Cash tickets can also preserve the ability to earn the applicable SkyMiles and status credit associated with the purchased fare, whereas some low fares do not. Evaluate the fare rules shown for your specific ticket before deciding.
A simple comparison example
Suppose the same flight displays a cash fare and an award fare. Write down the cash total, the miles requested and the award taxes and fees. If the award requires many more miles while leaving a similar cash charge, the mileage option may not be attractive for this trip. Conversely, a low award rate with modest taxes can beat the cash fare. The example is a method, not a prediction of any particular route’s price.
2. Use Pay with Miles only when you are eligible and the math works
Pay with Miles is a Delta SkyMiles American Express card benefit, not a payment choice available to every SkyMiles member. Under Delta’s current U.S. terms, an eligible basic Delta SkyMiles American Express card member can apply miles to eligible Delta- or Delta Connection-operated and ticketed flights booked at delta.com.
Key Pay with Miles rules
- The minimum redemption is 5,000 miles per passenger.
- Redemptions are made in 5,000-mile increments.
- Delta states that “Five thousand miles generally provides $50 of value.”
- The value can be lower when the amount you want to cover is not a multiple of $50.
- The remaining ticket balance must be paid with the eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express card.
- The flight must meet Delta’s operating, ticketing and booking requirements; a codeshare that is not eligible under the terms may not qualify.
The stated $50 figure is a general term value, not a promise that every redemption will produce an identical effective return in every circumstance. Check the amount applied on the payment screen before completing the purchase.

- Sign in to the SkyMiles account associated with the eligible card.
- Search for an eligible Delta-operated or Delta Connection flight on delta.com.
- At payment, select the Pay with Miles option if the itinerary and account qualify.
- Choose a mileage amount in 5,000-mile increments, starting at 5,000 miles per passenger.
- Review the dollar reduction and the remaining balance. Pay the remainder with the eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express card required by the terms.
- Save the confirmation and verify that the ticket reflects the intended fare and passenger details.
Pay with Miles versus Miles + Cash
These names describe different mechanisms:
| Feature | Pay with Miles | Miles + Cash |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | Eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express card members | SkyMiles members when offered on a select flight |
| What it is | A card benefit that reduces the price of an eligible cash ticket | An award-ticket redemption combining miles with a cash payment |
| Mileage increments or availability | 5,000-mile increments; minimum 5,000 miles per passenger | Availability and amounts vary by flight and offer |
| Ticket category | Uses the eligible cash-ticket booking path | Remains an award ticket and follows award-ticket restrictions |
| Payment requirement | Remaining amount must be charged to the eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express card | Taxes, fees and other required cash charges are due under the award rules |
Do not assume that having an eligible card turns every award into Pay with Miles or that Miles + Cash has the same rules. Select the option explicitly offered for the itinerary and read the checkout terms.

When Pay with Miles is a poor fit
- You do not hold an eligible card or the flight is not eligible.
- You need to pay the balance with a different card or another form of payment.
- The desired reduction is not a 5,000-mile multiple and the resulting value is lower than expected.
- An award search shows a materially better mileage rate for the same travel.
- You are considering opening a card solely for this feature without comparing its current annual fee, eligibility requirements and realistic use.
3. Check for a Companion Certificate before buying two tickets
Eligible Platinum, Platinum Business, Reserve and Reserve Business card members receive a Companion Certificate after card renewal. It can reduce the cost of a second ticket, but it is not an unrestricted free companion fare. The certificate’s card-specific terms govern the cabin, route, fare class, advance-purchase period, length of stay, booking channel and available inventory.
What the certificate can and cannot do
The primary traveler buys an eligible ticket and applies the certificate to the companion’s fare under the applicable terms. Delta Main Basic is excluded. Government-imposed taxes and fees still apply to the companion itinerary; Delta lists $22–$250 for itineraries of up to four segments on its current Companion Certificate information. The exact amount depends on the itinerary and can change.
How to evaluate a certificate
- Sign in to the account associated with the eligible card and locate an unused Companion Certificate.
- Read the certificate’s expiration, eligible cabin, route and fare-class requirements before searching.
- Search for two seats on dates where the required fare-class inventory is available. A flight can have two ordinary seats but not two seats that satisfy the certificate rules.
- Enter the certificate during the designated booking process and confirm that the primary fare, companion fare and taxes are displayed correctly.
- Compare the complete certificate booking cost with two independently purchased tickets on the same flights.
- Check the change, cancellation and no-show rules for both travelers before paying.
Why two separate tickets can win
A certificate may look valuable when the second base fare is discounted, yet route limits, fare-class scarcity, advance-purchase rules or the certificate’s expiration can make it unusable for your trip. If two ordinary tickets are inexpensive, buying them separately may cost less or provide better dates. Include the companion’s taxes and fees in the comparison; they are not waived simply because the base fare is covered by the certificate.
Do not treat renewal benefits as a reason to open a card
The certificate is tied to qualifying card membership and renewal terms. Those terms, including the card’s current annual fee and eligibility requirements, can change. Consider the benefit only if you already qualify or if a full, current calculation shows that the expected use justifies the card’s economics.

Delta eCredits can cover eligible Delta ticket costs and government-imposed taxes and fees. They are useful when you already have a valid credit from a previous transaction, but they do not combine freely with every other payment method.
eCredit compatibility rules
- Delta says eCredits cannot be combined with mileage redemptions such as Award Travel or Miles + Cash.
- An eCredit may be combined with a Companion Certificate when the certificate’s terms allow it.
- Credit-specific validity, passenger, itinerary and booking conditions apply; read the credit details shown in your account.
- The credit reduces eligible cash charges, but it does not turn an ineligible fare or itinerary into an eligible one.
How to apply an eCredit
- Retrieve the eCredit number or open the credit in your Delta account.
- Check its remaining value, expiration or travel deadline, eligible passenger and any fare restrictions.
- Search for a qualifying cash itinerary and proceed to the payment page.
- Enter the eCredit in the payment section and verify the amount applied.
- Pay any remaining balance with an accepted payment method and retain the receipt.
If the booking is an award ticket or Miles + Cash redemption, do not expect the eCredit to lower the mileage transaction. Compare an eligible cash booking using the credit with the award alternative instead.
The lowest displayed fare may remove valuable benefits
Delta Main Basic can show a lower headline price, but Delta lists important exclusions. Main Basic provides no SkyMiles earning or Medallion Status credit and excludes specified upgrades, paid or complimentary Comfort or Preferred Seats, and same-day confirmed or standby changes. The exact conditions shown during booking control the itinerary.
| Traveler priority | Question before choosing Main Basic |
|---|---|
| Points or status progress | Are you willing to forgo the SkyMiles and Medallion Status credit Delta lists as excluded? |
| Seat selection | Can you travel without paid or complimentary Comfort or Preferred Seat access? |
| Schedule flexibility | Would same-day confirmed or standby changes be useful? |
| Trip risk | Could a more restrictive fare cost more if plans change? |
Use an eCredit against the fare that fits the trip, not automatically against the smallest number in the search results. A slightly higher fare can deliver benefits or flexibility that matter more than the initial difference.
Best Value
Choosing among the four methods
Use this decision sequence for each itinerary:
- Price the trip in cash and SkyMiles. Include award taxes and fees and check Award Deals.
- Identify benefits you already possess. Look for an eligible Pay with Miles card, an unexpired Companion Certificate and usable eCredits.
- Filter out ineligible combinations. Pay with Miles requires the qualifying card and eligible flight; eCredits cannot be combined with Award Travel or Miles + Cash; Main Basic is excluded from Companion Certificate use.
- Compare the complete totals. Record cash due, miles spent, certificate restrictions and the value of any credit consumed.
- Price flexibility. Account for seat, upgrade, earning and same-day-change exclusions before selecting a low fare.
- Book only after checking deadlines. Confirm certificate expiration, eCredit validity, advance-purchase requirements and the travel dates permitted by each option.
Common mistakes that erase the saving
Calling an award ticket free
Award tickets require applicable taxes, fees and carrier-imposed charges at ticketing. Show those charges in your comparison.
Confusing Miles + Cash with Pay with Miles
Miles + Cash is an award-ticket option offered on select flights. Pay with Miles is a benefit for eligible card members and uses 5,000-mile increments. They have different eligibility and ticket rules.
Assuming every cardholder qualifies
Pay with Miles applies to eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express card members under the current U.S. terms, and Companion Certificates apply only to specified card products after renewal. Verify the account and product shown in the live terms.
Ignoring fare-class inventory
A Companion Certificate can fail even when two seats remain because the required fare class is unavailable. Search for the certificate’s qualifying inventory, not just two seats on the aircraft.
Using an eCredit with miles
Delta says eCredits cannot be combined with Award Travel or Miles + Cash. Decide whether the credit or the mileage redemption is more useful for this trip.
Choosing Main Basic solely on price
The fare can remove earning, seat and same-day-change benefits. Read the displayed restrictions and price the flexibility you actually need.
What to verify immediately before purchase
- The flight is operated and ticketed in a way that satisfies the selected payment benefit.
- The award checkout shows all taxes, fees and carrier-imposed charges.
- The Pay with Miles amount is a 5,000-mile increment and the remaining balance will be charged to the eligible card.
- The Companion Certificate is unexpired, applies to the route and cabin, and has qualifying fare inventory.
- The eCredit is valid for the passenger and cash itinerary and is not being applied to an incompatible mileage booking.
- The fare’s earning, seat, upgrade, change and standby rules match the trip’s priorities.
- Names, dates, airports and passenger counts are correct before final payment.
Delta’s prices, award availability, card benefits and certificate terms can change. Treat the live booking page and current terms as authoritative for the transaction you are about to make.
