Godlike.Host offers hosted SCP: Secret Laboratory servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Change your SCP: Secret Laboratory server’s displayed name by editing the server_name entry in config_gameplay.txt, inside the configuration folder for that server’s port. Save the file and restart the server; the setting is read at startup.
The exact parent folder depends on your operating system and hosting provider. A custom name appears in the server browser only when the server is publicly listed. A server that is not listed can still be joined by direct connection.
Where SCP: Secret Laboratory stores the server name
Dedicated-server settings are separated by port. Find the configuration directory whose name matches the port used by your server, then open config_gameplay.txt in that directory.

The base path shown by documentation is not completely consistent between installations. Treat the paths above as the usual locations, then confirm the actual generated folder on your machine. Do not create a second configuration tree simply because a guide shows a different base directory; editing an unused copy will have no effect.

Identify the correct port folder
If you operate more than one SCP:SL server, each instance can have its own port directory. Match the folder name to the port of the instance you intend to rename. Editing the file belonging to another port changes that other instance, not the one players are currently viewing.
On a hosted service, the provider may expose only a web file manager rather than the operating-system path. Look for a file named exactly config_gameplay.txt under the configuration area for the selected server instance. If the host offers several instances, select the one whose port matches your launch or allocation settings.

- Stop or prepare to restart the server. You can locate and edit the file while the process is running, but the value is read when the server starts. Plan a restart after saving so the new name is loaded.
- Open the per-port configuration folder. Use the Windows, Linux or host-panel location described above, and select the folder named for the correct port.
- Open
config_gameplay.txtin a plain-text editor. Do not editconfig_remoteadmin.txtfor this task; that file is used for administrator SteamIDs and is unrelated to the public server name. - Find the
server_nameline. Keep the setting’s existing key and separator. Set the value after the separator to the text you want players to see. A typical form isserver_name: My SCP:SL Server. - Keep the name as one setting value. Avoid deleting the key, changing it to a different spelling, or placing the text in another configuration file. If the file already contains a value, replace only that value unless you intentionally need to change another setting.
- Save the file in place. Confirm that the editor did not add an extra filename extension such as
.txt.txtand that you saved the file belonging to the selected port. - Restart the server process. A restart is required because SCP:SL reads this configuration during startup rather than continuously reloading the file.
- Verify the result. Check the server browser if the server is listed, or connect directly if it is not. If the old name remains, work through the troubleshooting section below before editing additional files.
Choose a clear name
Use a name that tells players what they are joining without relying on unexplained abbreviations. Include a community or instance identifier only when it helps distinguish multiple servers. Keep the value on the server_name line; changing unrelated gameplay settings is not necessary to rename the server.

Use rich text carefully
SCP:SL can display rich text in the server name, including styling such as colours, different sizes, bold text and italics. The exact tags available depend on the game’s current implementation, so use the syntax supported by your server version rather than copying tags from an unrelated game.
Tags must be closed and nested in the proper order. If an opening tag is left unclosed, or if nested tags are closed in the wrong order, the styling can be ignored. When troubleshooting a styled name, first replace it with a plain-text value such as server_name: My SCP:SL Server. Restart and verify the plain version, then add one formatting element at a time. This separates a formatting error from a path, listing or restart problem.
Keep a readable fallback in mind. Players may see the name in contexts where styling is unavailable or rendered differently, so the unformatted words should still identify the server.

Understand the related player-list title
The player_list_title setting controls the text displayed above the in-game player list. Guides indicate that, when it is left at its default, it matches server_name. This gives you two choices:
- Leave
player_list_titleat its default when the in-game heading should follow the server name automatically. - Set
player_list_titleseparately when the browser name and the in-game player-list heading should be different.
Do not edit config_remoteadmin.txt when your goal is either of these labels. Admin SteamIDs belong in that separate file and do not control the displayed server name.
Why the new name may not appear in the browser
The name can be correct in the configuration file and still be absent from the public browser if the server is not listed. Browser visibility depends on listing status, not only on the text in server_name.

Publicly listed servers
For a listed server, players should see the configured name in the server browser after the server has restarted and registered. Listing on the official server list may require verification by Northwood Studios. An unverified server can still be reachable through direct connection, but it may not appear in the official browser.

Direct-connect servers
A server does not need to appear in the official list to accept direct connections. If you know the address and port, use the game’s direct-connect option or the connection method provided by your host. This is useful for testing a new name before dealing with listing or verification requirements.
Official-list eligibility
Rules for official listing can change. A Community Division requirements document dated January 2022 stated that gameplay options had to remain unchanged for official listing, with specific exceptions. That document is historical guidance, not a guarantee that the same requirements apply now. Check the current Northwood Studios and Community Division rules before changing gameplay settings or relying on official-list eligibility.

Renaming the server itself is separate from meeting listing requirements. A successful name change does not prove that the server is verified, eligible or currently registered on the official list.

Installation and launch documentation can differ
Server-installation instructions found online are not uniform. Many guides describe installing the server through SteamCMD with application ID 996560 and launching it with a command resembling ./LocalAdmin 7777. Another guide states that the server software is LocalAdmin, provided by Northwood Studios, and is not distributed through SteamCMD.

Verify the current distribution and launch procedure against the official SCP: Secret Laboratory documentation for your version and platform. This conflict does not change where the name is configured once the server has generated its per-port configuration: the setting remains server_name in config_gameplay.txt.
Configuration defaults and version differences
Generated configuration files can differ between revisions. For example, TechWiki revisions have shown different defaults for server_ip, including 0.0.0.0 in one revision and auto in another. Do not overwrite your generated file with a complete block copied from an older guide merely to change the name. Read the file created by your own server and alter the single setting required.
The same principle applies to any option that appears near server_name. A guide’s example is useful for showing the key’s form, but it is not a substitute for the configuration generated by your installed version.
Safe rename checklist
- Identify the running server’s numeric port.
- Open the matching per-port configuration folder.
- Edit
config_gameplay.txt, notconfig_remoteadmin.txt. - Change the value of
server_nameand leave the key intact. - Use plain text first if you are diagnosing a problem.
- If using rich text, close and nest every tag correctly.
- Save the file without adding a second extension.
- Restart the server so the setting is read at startup.
- Check the browser only if the server is listed; otherwise test by direct connection.
- Treat official-list verification and current Community Division rules as separate requirements.
What to remember
The rename itself is a one-setting change: locate the configuration directory for the correct port, edit server_name in config_gameplay.txt, save, and restart. If the new text is not visible, first check that you edited the active instance and restarted it. Then distinguish between a configuration problem and a listing problem: direct connection can work even when the server is not present on the official browser, while official-list eligibility depends on current verification and Community Division rules.
