Customize a PC by starting with the change you actually want—better looks, quieter cooling, gaming performance, or a more useful desk setup—then checking what your existing hardware supports. A case, lighting strip, fan curve, or monitor can improve one part of the experience without improving everything else. Fit and compatibility come first; tune performance only with a clear reason.
Start with your goal and your current PC
Decide what is falling short before buying parts or changing settings. A visual refresh, excess fan noise, heat under load, a specific gaming workload, and an uncomfortable desk setup call for different solutions. A change that helps one goal may do little for another.
Identify your case, motherboard, graphics card, cooling hardware, monitor, and any lighting or system-control software you already use. ASUS’s PC DIY guidance describes core PC components and notes that productivity needs inform component choices. Knowing your current parts makes it easier to check whether an upgrade will fit and work.

Refresh the look without sacrificing compatibility
Choose a case for fit as well as style
Color, a windowed side panel, coordinated lighting, and tidy cables can make a build feel distinctive. But a case must also support the motherboard format and provide clearance for the graphics card and other components. Check its fan and radiator capacity and airflow before choosing it. MSI’s case selection guide and compatibility guide outline these fit and cooling considerations.
#1 Best Overall

Tool-free assembly process with easily removable panels, making upgrades and maintenance quick and hassle-free.
An airflow-focused case may suit a system that needs better heat management, but appearance alone does not establish that a case will cool your particular PC well. Compare the case’s supported components and cooling arrangement with your build rather than assuming that a larger or more decorative case is automatically better.
Check RGB connectors before connecting lighting
RGB connectors that look similar or serve a similar purpose are not necessarily interchangeable. MSI distinguishes 12V 4-pin RGB from 5V 3-pin addressable RGB. Verify the device’s voltage and connector against the motherboard header or controller before connecting it; do not force a mismatch.

For compatible devices, Windows Dynamic Lighting can provide centralized controls. Microsoft says it supports HID LampArray devices, but supported hardware and available controls vary. Check whether Windows recognizes your devices and whether its controls cover what you need. For additional device-specific options, the manufacturer’s software may be necessary. ASUS’s Aura Sync guide describes synchronization for supported devices and an addressable strip connected to a motherboard.
A restrained palette can make different components look coordinated without requiring every device to use the same effects. If adding addressable RGB fans or a lighting strip, confirm both the electrical connector and the software or controller support—not just the lighting brand or appearance.

Improve cooling and airflow deliberately
Components generate heat under load. Microsoft’s thermal-management design guide explains that thermal management helps keep temperatures from adversely affecting the system and user. Microsoft’s Windows gaming setup guidance also connects cooling and airflow with avoiding thermal throttling, when heat constrains performance.
- Check temperatures during the workload that causes concern. Compare readings with the limits specified for your components; acceptable behavior depends on the hardware and workload.
- Inspect airflow. Look for blocked intakes, dust buildup, or cables obstructing airflow, and address those issues before adding hardware.
- Verify support before buying fans or cooling. Check case fan and radiator capacity, motherboard connections, and component clearance. MSI’s compatibility guide covers fan and radiator support alongside clearance and airflow.
- Recheck the same workload after a change. Use your own system’s temperatures and behavior to judge whether the change helped; there is no universal fan count or guaranteed temperature reduction for every build.
Tune performance with care
System-control software may offer modes for cooling, noise, energy use, lighting, or overclocking. These controls are specific to the supported hardware and software, not a universal PC setting. ASUS’s Armoury Crate application documentation describes examples of these controls and warns that manual fan-curve changes or CPU/GPU overclocking can carry hardware risk.

- Support Back-Connect Motherboard: Supports ATX and Micro-ATX Back-Connect PROJECT ZERO motherboards, simplifying cable management for a clean, clutter-free, and aesthetically pleasing setup
- Upgrade Airflow Layout: This model supports up to 10 fans and 360 mm radiator on top and side. The lower chamber also surrounded by vents further enhance heat dissipation for optimal performance
- Dust Filter: Magnetic top and removable bottom dust filters enhance airflow while keeping your system clean, protecting internal components from dust buildup
- Pre-build with Reverse Blades Fan: Pre-installed reverse blade fans on the side allow the unobstructed display of the ARGB fan's beauty without interference
Choose a mode to suit the workload: quieter or energy-saving behavior may be preferable for everyday use, while a cooling- or performance-focused mode may suit a demanding task if the system supports it. Change one setting at a time and observe noise, temperatures, and stability. Overclocking is optional, not a necessary customization, and the documentation does not establish a specific performance gain for your PC.

Match the monitor to the task and PC
Choose monitor capability and budget around the system and the work you do. A display intended for gaming has different priorities from one used mainly for documents or creative work; the PC also needs to support the capability you want to use. Microsoft’s setup guidance recommends considering monitor capability and budget, rather than treating one specification as right for everyone.
Fix practical friction at the desk
Route cables so they do not obstruct access or airflow, and choose peripherals to address a real comfort or workflow problem. A keyboard, mouse, or lighting effect is not inherently a productivity upgrade; its value depends on how you use the setup. Prefer changes that solve a specific issue, such as easier access to frequently used controls or a more comfortable working position.
Use this compatibility checklist before buying
- Case: Does it support your motherboard format and provide enough clearance for the graphics card and other components?
- Cooling: Does the case support the intended fan or radiator arrangement, and can airflow reach the components that need it?
- Lighting: Does the motherboard header or controller match the device’s connector and voltage—especially 12V 4-pin RGB versus 5V 3-pin addressable RGB?
- Controls: Does Windows or the relevant vendor utility support and recognize the device and the controls you want?
- Monitor: Does the PC support the display capability you intend to use, and does it suit your workload and budget?
Check the case and device specifications against your actual parts before ordering. For lighting, ASUS’s Aura Sync guide provides an example of supported devices and motherboard-connected addressable lighting; the precise support for your build depends on its hardware.
