The short answer: customize a new character during character creation, revise many features at an in-game Barber Shop, and change the look of equipment through the current Transmog system. Character options are race-specific, while transmog controls the appearance of gear. In World of Warcraft: Midnight, the updated system saves looks in Outfit Slots, lets replacement gear inherit those looks, and supports manual or situation-based outfit changes.

This guide separates those systems so you can choose the right one, explains what each changes, and gives a practical workflow without assuming that every race or class has the same options.

Which WoW customization system should you use?

World of Warcraft has three distinct appearance tools. Character creation establishes your character’s physical identity. The Barber Shop changes many of those physical features after the character already exists. Transmog changes the visible appearance of equipment without changing the underlying item, its statistics, or your character’s race.

Method When it applies What it changes Important qualification
Character creation Before you enter the game with a new character Race-dependent features such as skin tone, hairstyle, eyes and additional details The available menu depends on the race you select.
Barber Shop After the character exists Many physical features, including hair and facial details; Blizzard has also described gender changes and other options Menus vary by race and can change with updates.
Transmog and Outfit Slots Whenever you manage the appearance of gear The visible style of equipment and saved outfits It does not replace the item’s gameplay statistics. Updating a style or unlocking a slot costs gold; switching among unlocked outfits is free.

Use the first two methods when the character itself looks wrong. Use transmog when the character is fine but the armor, weapons or other equipment do not match the style you want.

Choose appearance options during character creation

Character creation is the broadest point at which to establish a look. Blizzard’s Shadowlands customization preview describes race-specific choices including skin tones, hairstyles and eye colors, plus features such as tattoos, jewelry, beards, scars and hair ornaments. Some choices that had previously depended on one another were redesigned so they could be selected independently.

Those examples describe the design of the system, not a complete catalogue for every current race. Do not expect one race’s hair, jewelry or tattoo menu to appear for another race. Your race determines which categories, variants and combinations the creator presents.

A reliable creation workflow

  1. Select the race first. Treat the race choice as a customization decision, not just a story or ability decision. The race determines the appearance categories available later.
  2. Review each visible category. Check skin, hair, eyes and any additional categories the creator exposes for that race. Look for independent controls rather than assuming one choice will automatically replace another.
  3. Check the character from more than one angle. Zoom and rotate before confirming. Scars, jewelry, hair ornaments and facial details can look different in profile or under the creator’s lighting.
  4. Save only after checking combinations. A feature that looks good alone may conflict visually with a hairstyle, beard or ornament. Revisit the categories before finalizing the character.

If a desired option is absent, that normally indicates a race-specific limitation rather than a missing universal control. You can still use the Barber Shop later for the categories that race supports.

Change an existing character at the Barber Shop

For an existing character, visit an in-game Barber Shop and interact with its customization interface. Blizzard’s 2020 Barber Shop update describes changes including gender, hair, facial features and more. The Shadowlands preview also describes selecting Druid shapeshift appearances at the Barber.

The exact menu can differ by race and by game update. The official descriptions establish the kinds of changes the Barber can provide, but they do not publish one permanent, race-by-race menu. Treat the controls you see in your character’s current client as authoritative.

Step-by-step Barber Shop process

  1. Travel to a Barber Shop. Enter the shop and open the character-customization interaction.
  2. Inspect the available categories. Typical categories described by Blizzard include hair and facial features; the interface may also expose gender, race-specific details or class-specific cosmetic controls.
  3. Preview each change. Rotate and zoom the model as you compare options. A feature can read differently with another hairstyle, beard or facial setting.
  4. Set any Druid form appearances shown. For a Druid, the Barber may include shapeshift-form appearances in addition to the character’s normal model.
  5. Confirm the appearance. Save only when the preview matches what you want. If a category is not offered, the current race or update may not support that change there.

The Barber Shop is for the character model and certain class-specific forms. It is not a substitute for transmog: changing your hair will not change the appearance of your armor, and changing your armor’s transmog will not change your face.

Why race matters

Race is the main boundary on physical customization. Blizzard’s examples show race-specific hair, skin, jewelry, tattoos, scars and other features rather than one shared catalogue. A look available to one race may be unavailable to another even when the categories have similar names.

Examples of race-specific additions

Blizzard’s later update posts illustrate how the catalogue has expanded over time:

  • The Seeds of Renewal post mentions additional Troll hair colors, a Draenei skin color and Warlock demon options.
  • The 9.1.5 update covered additional looks for Highmountain Tauren, Lightforged Draenei, Nightborne and Void Elves.

These are examples of additions associated with particular updates. They are not a promise that every listed option is available to every race, nor that the menus remain identical in every current patch. When planning a character, verify the options in the creator or Barber Shop for that race in your installed version.

Independent feature choices

The Shadowlands preview is useful for understanding the system’s intent: some options that once depended on one another could be selected independently. That can make combinations such as a particular hairstyle with a separate facial feature possible where the older interface forced a linked choice. The creator still enforces race-specific rules, so independent selection does not mean unrestricted mixing across races.

What transmog changes

Transmog changes how equipment looks while you continue using the item’s actual gameplay properties. It is the right tool when you want a different armor set, weapon style or coordinated theme without replacing the gear that provides your current statistics.

Blizzard’s February 12, 2026 article says the updated Transmog system is available in Midnight. Its central change is that you apply and save an appearance to an Outfit Slot instead of repeatedly assigning a look to each individual piece of gear. When new equipment is placed in that slot, it inherits the slot’s selected appearance. You therefore do not have to reapply the same style every time an item is replaced.

How Outfit Slots differ from old item-by-item transmog

Older mental model Current Outfit Slot model
A replacement item could require you to apply the desired appearance again. New equipment in a configured slot inherits that slot’s chosen appearance.
Each applied transmog was treated as a look on a particular piece. The appearance is saved as part of an outfit configuration.
Changing themes meant rebuilding or reapplying many pieces. You can save multiple outfits and switch among unlocked ones.

Previously applied transmogs and legacy outfits were converted into Custom Sets under the updated system. If an older look appears as a Custom Set rather than in the form you remember, that conversion is expected behavior described by Blizzard.

Build and save an outfit

The official overview names Outfit Slots, saved appearances, Custom Sets and situation options, but it does not publish a permanent click-by-click interface map. Labels and placement can change as the system receives updates. Use the following workflow with the labels visible in your current transmog interface.

  1. Open the Transmog interface. Use the game’s current transmog access point and select the Outfit Slot or outfit-management area.
  2. Choose the equipment appearance. Assign the appearance you want for each relevant gear position. The selected style belongs to the outfit slot rather than only to the item currently equipped.
  3. Review the full combination. Check armor, weapons and any other visible positions together. A replacement item will inherit the slot’s look, so make sure the chosen appearance works with the complete theme.
  4. Save or update the outfit. Updating an outfit’s style costs in-game gold. The official article does not state an exact amount, so the interface’s current price is the authoritative figure for your character.
  5. Repeat for other themes. Create additional outfits for roles or activities such as a town appearance, a dungeon set or a specialization-specific look.

Unlocking an additional Outfit Slot also costs gold. The amount is not specified in Blizzard’s overview and may be subject to the live game’s balance, so do not rely on an unstated fixed price.

Switch outfits manually or automatically

Once an Outfit Slot is unlocked and saved, switching among saved outfits is free. Blizzard describes two controls for changing them.

Manual switching

  1. Open the outfit controls and choose an already unlocked outfit.
  2. For faster access, add an outfit to an action bar if your interface exposes that option.
  3. Select the action-bar entry when you want to change appearance. The switch uses the saved style; it does not require you to pay the style-update cost again.

Situation-based switching

You can configure situation options so the game changes outfits automatically. Blizzard’s examples include going to town, entering a dungeon, changing specialization and returning home. The available triggers and their exact labels can change, so review the current list rather than assuming every situation is present on every character.

  1. Open the outfit’s situation or automatic-switching settings.
  2. Choose a situation offered by the current interface, such as a town visit, dungeon entry or specialization change.
  3. Assign the saved outfit to that situation.
  4. Test the trigger in a low-risk setting. If two rules could apply at once, check which rule the interface treats as higher priority.
  5. Disable or replace a rule if the game changes to an outfit you did not intend to use.

Automatic switching changes the saved appearance; it does not alter your specialization, equipment statistics or class role. It is a presentation tool for keeping a consistent look as your activity changes.

Action Gold cost? What is established
Unlock an Outfit Slot Yes Blizzard states that unlocking slots costs gold; no exact amount is given in the official overview.
Update an outfit’s style Yes Blizzard states that style updates cost gold; no exact amount is given.
Switch between unlocked outfits No Switching among saved, unlocked outfits is free.
Use an action-bar outfit entry No additional switch fee The action bar provides manual access to an already saved outfit.

Common problems and how to diagnose them

“I cannot find the appearance I want.”

First determine whether you are editing the character or the gear. Hair, facial features, skin and similar details belong in character creation or the Barber Shop. Armor and weapon appearances belong in transmog. If you are in the correct system, check race-specific availability; Blizzard does not describe a universal menu shared by every race.

“My replacement gear lost the look.”

Check whether the appearance was saved to an Outfit Slot in the current system rather than applied only through an older item-by-item workflow. The updated system is designed for new equipment in that slot to inherit its selected look. If the slot is not configured or the outfit was not saved after editing, update the outfit and confirm the saved state.

“I was charged when I changed outfits.”

Switching among already unlocked outfits is free. A gold charge indicates that you likely unlocked a new slot or edited an outfit’s style rather than merely selected a saved outfit. Read the confirmation text before accepting the action.

“An old transmog appears under a different name or category.”

Blizzard says previously applied transmogs and legacy outfits were converted into Custom Sets. Look for the converted Custom Set in the current outfit-management interface instead of expecting the older presentation.

“Automatic switching keeps choosing the wrong look.”

Open the situation settings for each outfit and inspect every assigned trigger. A town, dungeon, specialization or homecoming rule may be applying when you did not expect it. Remove overlapping assignments, save the intended rule and test it again.

“A guide shows a menu or option I do not have.”

Customization catalogues and interfaces change. Blizzard’s September 2, 2025 post described the transmog changes as an upcoming overhaul and warned that UI elements could change. The February 12, 2026 article describes the updated system as available now in Midnight; use that current description for Outfit Slots and inheritance, while treating older screenshots and labels as historical.

What is known, and what can change

The broad division between character customization, the Barber Shop and transmog is stable enough to guide your choices. The exact race catalogue, the number and presentation of Outfit Slots, individual eligibility rules and interface placement are more changeable. The official material reviewed for this guide does not publish a complete current matrix for every race and class, nor does it enumerate every transmog eligibility rule.

For that reason, verify a specific option in the live character creator, Barber Shop or transmog interface before changing a character or spending gold. Patch notes can add race-specific hair, skin colors, facial details or class-related cosmetic options, as shown by the Seeds of Renewal and 9.1.5 examples.

A practical customization checklist

  • Choose the race before judging the available physical features.
  • Use character creation for a new character’s initial skin, hair, eyes and other race-specific details.
  • Visit the Barber Shop to revise supported features on an existing character.
  • For Druids, check whether the Barber includes the shapeshift appearances you want.
  • Use transmog for the appearance of equipment, not for the character’s face or body.
  • Save gear styles to Outfit Slots so replacement equipment can inherit the selected appearance.
  • Look for older appearances under Custom Sets after the current-system conversion.
  • Budget gold for new Outfit Slots and style updates.
  • Use action-bar entries for manual changes and situation options for automatic changes.
  • Remember that switching among already unlocked outfits is free.
  • Recheck race-specific menus and interface labels after major updates.

With those distinctions in place, you can change the character model at the Barber Shop, maintain a persistent gear theme through Outfit Slots and let the game present different saved looks for town, dungeons or specializations without rebuilding the appearance each time your equipment changes.
