On a Samsung Galaxy tablet, open Settings > Display > Taskbar to show or hide the taskbar. Your pinned shortcuts come from the Home screen’s favorites area: drag apps into that area to add them, drag them out (or long-press and choose Remove) to delete them. App-pair and recent-app controls depend on the tablet model and One UI version, so check the Taskbar page on your own device rather than applying instructions written for another Galaxy model.
What the Galaxy tablet taskbar controls
The regular tablet taskbar is a persistent launcher along the edge of the screen. It gives you quick access to selected apps while another app is open, and on supported software it can also expose multitasking layouts such as saved app pairs. It is separate from Samsung DeX’s desktop-style taskbar, which changes between One UI generations.
Samsung’s current US support instructions describe up to four pinned apps on Galaxy tablets. That is different from the Galaxy Z Fold taskbar, which Samsung describes as eight positions: six selected apps and two recent apps. Do not use the Z Fold count or layout as a tablet setting. Samsung’s taskbar support guide is the reference for the current US menu and slot information.
A useful way to think about the regular taskbar is as a shortcut to your Home screen favorites, not as a second app drawer. Pinned icons are deliberately chosen and stay put until you change favorites. Recent apps, where a particular model exposes them, are automatically surfaced and can change as you work. A saved app pair is a third kind of item: one shortcut that launches a two-app layout.

Turn the taskbar on or off
Samsung says the taskbar is enabled by default on the devices covered by its support article. To change its state:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Taskbar.
- Tap the switch at the top of the screen to turn the taskbar on or off.
Turning the switch off hides the regular tablet taskbar; it does not uninstall apps, delete Home screen favorites, or remove saved app-pair data. If you turn it back on, the favorites you previously arranged can appear again. This makes the switch useful when you want an uncluttered screen temporarily without rebuilding your shortcuts later.
If you do not see Taskbar under Display, use the Settings search field and search for Taskbar. Samsung changes menu wording and placement between models and One UI releases, so a search result on your tablet is safer than treating an alternate path as universal. The switch controls the regular tablet taskbar; it does not describe every taskbar-like control that appears inside DeX.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Some guides use phrases such as “auto-hide taskbar.” Do not assume that phrase means your tablet has a separate universal auto-hide setting. Samsung’s documented control is the on/off switch on the Taskbar settings page. If your own build exposes an additional option, follow the label shown on that page; otherwise, use the main switch.
Change which apps appear
Add an app to the taskbar
Galaxy tablets use the Home screen’s favorites area as the source for pinned taskbar shortcuts. From the Home screen, touch and hold an app, then drag it into the favorites area. You can also drag an app from the Apps screen into that area. Once it is in favorites, it appears as a pinned shortcut in the taskbar, subject to the tablet’s slot limit. Samsung documents the favorites-to-taskbar behavior here.
Keep your most frequently switched-to apps in favorites rather than trying to build a separate taskbar list. Moving an icon in the favorites area changes the shortcut arrangement that the taskbar uses. If you want a different order, rearrange the icons in favorites; the taskbar follows that arrangement rather than requiring a second reordering step.
When you drag from the Apps screen, hold the icon until the Home screen appears, then place it in the favorites area. If the area is full, remove or move an existing favorite first. Adding an app to favorites changes its Home screen status as well as its taskbar presence, so choose apps you are comfortable keeping readily available in both places.
Remove a pinned app
To remove a shortcut, drag the app out of the favorites area. Samsung also provides a direct method: touch and hold the app and select Remove. Removing it from favorites removes the pinned taskbar shortcut; it does not uninstall the app from the tablet. The app remains available from the Apps screen and can be added again later.
Be careful to distinguish Remove from an uninstall command. The taskbar customization action only changes the favorite shortcut. If you see an uninstall choice, that is a separate app-management operation and is not needed for taskbar cleanup.

Understand the four-app limit
The current Samsung support page states that Galaxy tablets can pin up to four apps. If a fifth app will not stay in the favorites area or taskbar, remove an existing favorite first. The eight-slot figure sometimes shown in Samsung instructions belongs to Z Fold devices, not Galaxy tablets.
The four slots refer to selected tablet app shortcuts, not necessarily every visual element that a particular software build might show. A model that offers recent apps or an app-pair shortcut can present additional controls, but those do not turn the tablet into the Z Fold’s six-selected-plus-two-recent arrangement. Check the icons and labels on your own Taskbar page when counting what is available.

Recent apps: why instructions differ by tablet
Recent-app behavior is the most model- and software-sensitive part of Galaxy tablet taskbar customization. Samsung’s general support page says the recent and suggested-app controls described for the Z Fold are not available on Galaxy tablets. However, the Galaxy Tab S10 user guide documents a Show recent apps option in its Taskbar settings.
Those statements are not a reliable basis for one rule covering every model, region, and One UI build. If your tablet’s Settings > Display > Taskbar page contains Show recent apps, you can enable or disable it there. If the option is absent, the software on that model does not expose that control. Do not infer a fault simply because a tutorial for a Tab S10, Z Fold, or another generation shows a different menu.
Recent apps are not replacements for pinned favorites. A recent item can disappear or change as you open other apps, while a favorite remains until you edit the Home screen. For a dependable workflow, pin the apps you always need and treat recent apps as optional convenience shortcuts.
| Taskbar item | What it means | What to expect on a Galaxy tablet |
|---|---|---|
| Pinned shortcut | An app you choose through the Home screen favorites area | Samsung’s current support page allows up to four tablet app slots |
| Recent app | An automatically surfaced app used recently | Availability and a Show recent apps switch depend on model and One UI version |
| App pair | A saved two-app split-screen arrangement | Available only on supported models, software, and app combinations |
| Z Fold layout | A separate foldable-device arrangement | Do not apply its six-selected-plus-two-recent layout to a tablet |
Save an app pair for split-screen multitasking
On supported Galaxy tablets, you can save two apps as a single taskbar shortcut. This is useful for combinations such as a browser and notes app, or an email app and a document viewer. The exact icon can vary slightly by One UI release, but the workflow is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the first app.
- Start split-screen view and choose the second app.
- Tap the divider between the two apps.
- Tap the star-shaped App pair control in the divider controls.
- Choose the option to add the pair to the taskbar.
The saved pair then appears as a launcher in the taskbar. Tapping it reopens the two-app arrangement when the apps and orientation are supported. If the star or add-to-taskbar command is missing, that build or app combination may not support saving the pair; use the regular split-screen launcher instead.
To make a pair useful, choose apps that you routinely use together and test both orientations. Some apps do not support split-screen, and a pair can behave differently if one app changes its multi-window support after an update. Recreate the pair if the old shortcut stops opening correctly rather than assuming the taskbar itself is broken.
Samsung’s Tab S10 documentation also describes adding an app pair to the taskbar. A Samsung Global Newsroom article about the Android 12L update for the Tab S8 series described layouts with up to three apps on screen and saved app-pair arrangements. That three-app capability is historical and model-specific, not a universal limit or promise for every current Galaxy tablet. Read Samsung’s Tab S8 Android 12L announcement for the scope of that update.

Do not confuse the app-pair star with a favorite-app shortcut. A favorite opens one app. The app-pair shortcut opens a layout, and its availability is tied to the split-screen features in your particular One UI build.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Regular tablet taskbar versus DeX
Before changing a taskbar setting, decide whether you mean the normal Android tablet interface or Samsung DeX. The regular taskbar is configured through Settings > Display > Taskbar. DeX presents a desktop-style environment with its own running-app area and window behavior, so instructions for one context may not apply to the other.
Samsung distinguishes DeX generations by One UI version:
| Tablet software | DeX name in Samsung’s documentation | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| One UI 7.1 and earlier | Classic DeX | Uses the earlier desktop-style DeX behavior and controls |
| One UI 8 and later | New DeX | Uses the newer DeX taskbar and app-management behavior |
Samsung lists built-in DeX support for tablet families including Tab S6 through Tab S12 series and selected A-series models, but compatibility is model-specific. Check your exact tablet and software build in Settings > About tablet > Software information before following a DeX guide. Samsung’s DeX support page explains the supported families and the Classic/New distinction.
Samsung’s newer Access apps in Samsung DeX guide describes the DeX taskbar as the place to open and manage running apps. If you are troubleshooting an icon that appears only while DeX is active, stay within DeX instructions; changing the regular tablet Taskbar switch may not change that desktop view.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen a guide says “taskbar” without naming the interface, look for clues. A desktop with resizable windows and a running-app area is DeX; the ordinary tablet interface uses the Android-style Home screen and favorites relationship described above. Identify the interface first, then apply the matching instructions.
Using a keyboard, mouse, or keyboard cover with DeX
DeX can accept input from a compatible keyboard cover, separate keyboard, or mouse on supported tablets. These accessories are optional: turning on the regular taskbar and rearranging favorites does not require one. Compatibility varies by tablet model, so verify the accessory against the exact model number before buying or pairing it. Samsung’s DeX support documentation lists the input options and supported-device conditions.
A keyboard cover can make window and app switching more convenient for DeX users, but it does not expand the regular tablet’s four pinned-app limit. Treat it as an optional accessory for a compatible DeX setup, not as a requirement for taskbar customization. No purchase is needed to switch the taskbar on, move favorites, or save an app pair when the software supports that feature.
Fix common taskbar problems
The Taskbar menu is missing
- Open Settings search and enter Taskbar.
- Confirm that you are in the normal tablet interface rather than DeX.
- Check the tablet’s One UI version because menu names and available controls vary by release.
- Use the manual for your exact model if Settings search returns no taskbar result.
- Make sure you are checking Display, not a DeX-specific settings panel or an unrelated navigation setting.
An app will not appear in the taskbar
- Move the app into the Home screen favorites area; the taskbar reads its pinned shortcuts from there.
- Make sure you have not reached the four-app tablet limit.
- Remove an old favorite, then add the replacement.
- If you are trying to add a saved pair, first confirm that both apps are in a supported split-screen arrangement.
- Check that you actually placed the icon in the favorites area rather than elsewhere on the Home screen.
The taskbar looks different from a tutorial
Compare the tutorial’s device category and One UI version with yours. A Z Fold layout, a Tab S10 manual, Classic DeX, New DeX, and a regular tablet taskbar can expose different controls. Samsung’s own documentation is not uniform about recent-app controls, so the options actually shown on your Taskbar page are the authoritative set for that build.

Recent apps are not shown
Look for Show recent apps under Settings > Display > Taskbar. If the switch exists, enable it. If it does not, your tablet’s current software may not offer recent-app display even though another Galaxy manual does. Pinned favorites remain available independently of recent-app behavior.
A saved app pair does not open as expected
- Recreate the pair from split-screen and save it again.
- Check whether one app has changed its multi-window support.
- Try the pair in the tablet orientation in which it was created.
- If the app-pair star is absent, use split-screen manually; support is not identical across models and One UI builds.
An app disappeared after rearranging favorites
Check the Home screen favorites area first. Because the taskbar mirrors that area, moving or removing an icon there changes the taskbar too. If the app is no longer a favorite, find it in the Apps screen and drag it back. This does not indicate that the app was deleted.
A practical customization setup
For a simple, stable setup, keep four high-frequency apps in favorites and use app pairs only for repeatable workflows. For example, place your browser, email, notes, and calendar in favorites, then save a browser-plus-notes pair if you regularly research and record information together. This separates shortcuts you always want from recent apps that may change automatically.
- Open Settings > Display > Taskbar and confirm the switch is on.
- Return to the Home screen and arrange the favorites area with your most-used individual apps.
- Open split-screen for any two-app workflow you repeat.
- Use the divider’s star-shaped App pair control to save that workflow, when available.
- Recheck the Taskbar page after a major One UI update; model-specific options such as recent apps can change.
Keep individual apps in favorites when you need predictable one-tap access. Use a pair for a workflow that should open together. If you seldom use multitasking, four straightforward favorites may be less confusing than filling the available space with pair shortcuts.

Can the taskbar launch two apps at once?
On supported tablets, open the apps in split-screen, tap the divider, select the star-shaped App pair control, and add the pair to the taskbar. The control and supported layouts vary by software and app combination.
Is the regular tablet taskbar the same as the DeX taskbar?
No. The regular taskbar belongs to the standard tablet interface. DeX has a desktop-style taskbar and different app-management behavior. Samsung identifies tablet One UI 7.1 and earlier as Classic DeX and One UI 8 and later as New DeX.
Do I need a keyboard cover to customize the taskbar?
No. The regular taskbar works through Settings and Home screen favorites. A compatible keyboard, mouse, or keyboard cover is optional for supported DeX setups.
Bottom line
Use Settings > Display > Taskbar to show or hide the regular Galaxy tablet taskbar, and manage its pinned shortcuts through the Home screen favorites area. Samsung’s tablet limit is up to four pinned apps, while recent apps and app-pair controls depend on the model and One UI release.
