On Roku’s current Home Screen, app tiles are in the Apps section. Highlight an app, press the Star button on the remote, then choose Move app or Move app to the top. For broader layout changes, open Settings > Home Screen, where Roku provides controls for tile size, recommendation rows, and Quick Access. These options use Roku’s built-in interface; no additional product or subscription is required.

The current interface places personalized recommendations near the top and the familiar app grid farther down. Roku says the new layout is now standard, so there is no setting to restore the former Home Screen design. Menu appearance can differ between devices and households.

What changed on the Roku Home Screen

Roku’s updated Home Screen gives recommendations more prominence. Personalized rows appear near the top, while installed apps remain available in a conventional grid in the Apps section lower on the page. The apps have not been removed; you may simply need to scroll farther than before. Roku describes Quick Access as a separate row near the top for frequently used apps, features, and shortcuts. Roku’s Home Screen support article explains that recommendations can vary by device and household, partly because viewing history influences what is shown.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a different Roku in your home has different recommendations, tile placement, or visible rows, that is expected. Roku notes that the experience may look different across devices and households. The controls below describe the current official interface, but exact wording or visual placement can vary with the device and software experience.

Roku’s support page describing this experience was updated August 25, 2026. Its wording is useful when navigating the menus: look for Apps section, Move app, Move app to the top, Quick Access, and Settings > Home Screen.

Move an app in the Apps section

Use the Star-button options on the app itself. The procedure does not require opening a separate app-management screen.

  1. Press the Home button to display the Roku Home Screen.
  2. Scroll down until you reach the Apps section.
  3. Highlight the app you want to reposition. Do not open the app; leave it selected in the grid.
  4. Press the Star button on the Roku remote to open that app’s options.
  5. Choose Move app when you want to reposition the tile, or choose Move app to the top when you want Roku to place it at the top of the app list.
  6. Follow the on-screen placement prompt and confirm the location shown by your Roku. The available destination and visual arrangement can differ, so rely on the choices displayed on your device rather than a fixed button sequence.

Roku’s current guidance specifically names the commands Move app and Move app to the top. If your menu uses slightly different wording or does not show one of these choices, your device’s interface may differ from the standard experience described in Roku’s support documentation.

Choosing between the two move commands

Command Use it when What to expect
Move app You want to place the tile in a particular part of the Apps grid. Roku opens the repositioning workflow and displays the available placement choices on your device.
Move app to the top You want the app to be easier to reach without planning a specific grid location. The app is moved to the top of the app list shown in the Apps section.

Because Roku does not promise one universal grid coordinate or remote-button sequence, avoid relying on instructions that say an app will always land in a particular numbered position. The Star menu and the on-screen confirmation are the dependable parts of the process.

Make the app grid easier to reach

Moving one or two frequently used apps to the top is useful when you want to keep the app grid but reduce scrolling. A practical arrangement is to put the apps you open most often at the top, then leave less-used services below them. Roku does not publish a fixed limit for how many apps can be moved or a universal ordering scheme, so organize the grid according to the options your device presents.

If recommendations occupy much of the first screen, there are two separate ways to reduce the amount of scrolling:

  • Move an important app to the top of the Apps list with Move app to the top.
  • Hide recommendation rows in Settings > Home Screen, described below.

These actions affect different parts of the Home Screen. Moving an app changes its location in the Apps section; hiding recommendations changes whether those recommendation rows appear.

Change Home Screen options

Roku groups the main layout controls in one place:

  1. From the Home Screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Home Screen.
  3. Adjust the available options for tile size, recommendation rows, and Quick Access.

Roku identifies three settings in this area. The labels and the appearance of the resulting screen can vary by device, but the purpose of each control is consistent.

Home Screen setting What it changes When to use it
Tile size Changes the size of Home Screen tiles. Choose a size that makes the grid easier to scan or lets more tiles fit on screen, according to the choices shown on your Roku.
Recommendation rows Shows or hides rows containing personalized recommendations. Hide the rows when you want a less recommendation-focused Home Screen; show them when you use Roku’s personalized picks.
Quick Access Shows or hides the Quick Access row near the top. Keep it visible for fast access to selected apps, features, and shortcuts, or hide it if you prefer the App Grid in that space.

Roku says that when Quick Access is hidden, the App Grid replaces it. That does not remove installed apps; it changes which section occupies that part of the Home Screen.

How the three settings work together

These controls solve different problems, so change them independently. Tile size changes the visual scale of tiles. Recommendation rows determine whether personalized content rows are displayed. Quick Access determines whether the shortcut row near the top is shown. None of these settings is an old-layout switch, and none is a replacement for moving an individual app.

For example, a viewer who wants a compact, app-focused screen can choose the tile size that is easiest to scan, hide recommendation rows, and hide Quick Access so the App Grid occupies that area. Another viewer may keep recommendation rows and Quick Access visible, then move only the most-used apps to the top of the Apps section. The appropriate combination depends on how much personalized content and shortcut access the household wants to see.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manage Quick Access tiles

Quick Access is not the same as the Apps grid. It is a row near the top that can contain frequently used apps, features, and shortcuts.

Add an app or shortcut

  1. Highlight the app or shortcut you want to add to Quick Access.
  2. Press the Star button.
  3. Choose the add option shown in the menu.

Roku’s support guidance describes adding an app or shortcut by highlighting it and pressing Star. The exact option name may vary with the device interface, so select the command that explicitly adds the highlighted item to Quick Access.

Remove a Quick Access tile

  1. Highlight the tile in the Quick Access row.
  2. Press the Star button.
  3. Choose the remove option shown for that tile.

Removing a Quick Access tile does not uninstall the app. It only removes that tile from the shortcut row. The app remains available in the Apps section unless you separately remove it through an option your device provides.

Hide the entire Quick Access row

To hide Quick Access, open Settings > Home Screen and change the Quick Access visibility setting. Roku says the App Grid replaces Quick Access when it is hidden. This is a layout choice, not an account or app deletion action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick Access versus moving an app

Adding an item to Quick Access gives you a shortcut in the upper portion of Home. Moving an app changes the app’s position in the Apps grid. You can use both features at the same time, but changing one does not automatically change the other. If an app is easy to find in Quick Access but not where expected in the grid, check the Apps section rather than assuming the app was removed.

Control shortcuts separately from app movement

Roku has a separate shortcut-management path at Settings > Home screen > Shortcuts. This setting controls which shortcuts are displayed and should not be confused with moving an app in the Apps grid or managing Quick Access.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Home screen.
  3. Choose Shortcuts.
  4. Change the shortcut visibility options shown on your device.

Roku also says a shortcut can be hidden or moved by highlighting it in the app grid and pressing Star. Personal shortcut buttons on some remotes are a separate hardware feature; changing the Home Screen shortcut list does not change the physical buttons on a remote.

The capitalization in the menu may appear as Home screen in the shortcut article and Home Screen in the broader layout guidance. Follow the item labeled Home screen/Home Screen on your Roku. The important distinction is that Shortcuts is a separate submenu for shortcut visibility, not the command used to rearrange an app tile.

If an app seems to be missing

Look in the Apps section first

The updated layout places apps farther down the Home Screen. Scroll to the Apps section before assuming an app has disappeared. The app grid remains the familiar place for installed apps even when recommendations are displayed above it.

Search for the app

If the app is not in the grid, use Roku’s Search function. Roku advises adding the app if it appears in search results. This is the supported way to locate an app that is not currently visible in the grid.

Check whether you are looking at Quick Access

Quick Access is only a shortcut row. An app can be absent from Quick Access while still being present in the Apps section, or present in Quick Access as a shortcut while its full tile remains in the grid. Check both locations before changing settings.

Do not infer a deletion from a changed layout

Roku’s updated Home Screen does not remove apps merely because recommendations appear at the top. A changed arrangement, a hidden Quick Access row, or different recommendation content can make the grid look unfamiliar without changing the installed app list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the on-screen labels as the final check

When a menu does not match an online description exactly, return to the highlighted tile and press Star again. Look for a command that says Move app, Move app to the top, or an add/remove action for Quick Access. Roku cautions that the experience can differ across devices and households, so a missing label is not by itself proof that the feature is unavailable.

Why two Roku devices can look different

Roku says personalized picks and recommendations may differ between devices and households and are influenced in part by viewing history. As a result, two televisions can show different recommendation rows even when both use the current Home Screen experience. This variation does not mean one device is necessarily missing a feature.

Roku also cautions that the overall experience may look different across devices and households. Follow the labels on the screen you are using. The documented locations remain Apps for installed app tiles and Settings > Home Screen for the main layout controls.

Can you switch back to the old Roku layout?

No. Roku’s official statement is: “No, the new Home Screen layout is now the standard Roku experience, and there isn’t a setting to switch back.” You can hide recommendation rows, hide Quick Access, change tile size, and move apps, but those controls customize the current interface rather than restore an earlier design. See Roku’s explanation of the current Home Screen.

A practical setup sequence

If you are configuring a Roku for the first time or reorganizing one after the layout changed, this order minimizes back-and-forth:

  1. Open Settings > Home Screen and decide whether recommendation rows should be visible.
  2. Choose a tile size that makes the Apps grid comfortable to scan.
  3. Decide whether Quick Access should remain visible. If you hide it, Roku places the App Grid in its place.
  4. Return to the Home Screen and scroll to Apps.
  5. Use the Star menu on the apps you use most and choose Move app to the top or Move app.
  6. Configure separate shortcut visibility under Settings > Home screen > Shortcuts if you want fewer shortcut items.
  7. Use Search if an expected app is not in the grid and add it when Roku presents it in the results.

This sequence keeps three jobs distinct: changing the overall layout, arranging installed apps, and managing shortcuts. Keeping them separate makes it easier to identify which setting changed the screen.

Common mistakes and the corresponding fix

  • Looking for apps at the top of the screen: scroll down to the Apps section; recommendations are positioned above it.
  • Opening an app instead of its options: highlight the tile and press Star without launching it.
  • Expecting Move app to guarantee a numbered position: use the placement choices shown on your own Roku; Roku does not promise one universal grid position.
  • Confusing Quick Access with the app grid: add or remove Quick Access tiles separately from app movement.
  • Expecting an old-layout switch: Roku says the current layout is standard and cannot be switched back.
  • Assuming different recommendations indicate a fault: recommendation content can vary with device, household, and viewing history.
  • Changing the wrong shortcut setting: use Settings > Home screen > Shortcuts for shortcut visibility, not the app-movement command.
  • Assuming a hidden Quick Access row deleted apps: Roku says the App Grid replaces the row when Quick Access is hidden; installed apps remain in the Apps section.
  • Following a fixed remote sequence from another model: use the command and placement prompt shown on your own screen because Roku does not document one universal sequence beyond opening the Star menu.

What you need

The documented customization uses an existing Roku device and its remote. Roku’s instructions do not require an additional purchase, app, or subscription. If your remote is unavailable or damaged, these steps cannot be performed with that remote until you regain a working way to control the Roku; the Home Screen settings themselves remain built into the device.

How do I move a Roku app to the top?

Highlight the app in the Apps section, press the remote’s Star button, and choose Move app to the top. Follow the placement prompt shown on your device.

What is the difference between Move app and Move app to the top?

Move app starts the normal repositioning workflow so you can choose from the destinations your Roku displays. Move app to the top places the tile at the top of the app list.

Can I restore the old Roku Home Screen?

No. Roku says the new Home Screen is the standard experience and there is no setting to switch back. You can still hide recommendation rows or Quick Access, change tile size, and rearrange apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I hide Roku recommendations?

Open Settings > Home Screen and change the recommendation-rows setting to hide them. This changes the Home Screen display; it does not remove installed apps.

What happens when I hide Quick Access?

Roku says the App Grid replaces the Quick Access row. Hiding Quick Access removes shortcut tiles from that row but does not uninstall the associated apps.

Why do two Roku devices show different recommendations?

Roku says personalized picks can differ by device and household and are influenced in part by viewing history. Different rows do not necessarily indicate a problem.

Do I need to buy anything to customize the Roku Home Screen?

No. The documented controls use the Roku device and its existing remote. No additional product or subscription is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where are Roku shortcut settings?

Use Settings > Home screen > Shortcuts to manage shortcut visibility. This is separate from moving an app in the Apps grid and from the Quick Access row.

The Bottom Line

To move an app, scroll to Apps, highlight the tile, press Star, and choose Move app or Move app to the top. Use Settings > Home Screen for tile size, recommendation rows, and Quick Access. Roku’s current layout cannot be reverted to the old design, but these controls let you reduce scrolling and tailor the screen to your household.
