You can personalize the PS5 home screen through its Welcome Hub: add, remove, move, and resize widgets, choose a preset or make your own, and change the background. A game’s Game Hub is different—it gathers information about that specific game, and Sony’s feature overview does not document controls for rearranging its contents. Welcome Hub vs. Game Hub: what can you customize?
The Welcome Hub is the customizable area on the PS5 home screen. Its settings affect widgets, layout, and background. Sony’s Welcome Hub support guide documents those controls, while noting that available widgets can vary by region. The practical answer to “How to customize the PS5 home screen and game hub” depends on which area you mean: you can configure the Welcome Hub, while the Game Hub is a game’s information space.
A Game Hub belongs to an individual game. PlayStation describes it as a place for related information, including community broadcasts and new game content, that changes over the game’s lifecycle. That description comes from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PS5 features page; it does not explain a setting for moving or rearranging Game Hub content. If you mean the page for one game, distinguish it from the Welcome Hub: the documented customization options in this guide apply to the latter.

This distinction also helps avoid changing the wrong setting. Welcome Hub widgets, background, and layout concern the home-screen hub. A Gamelist sorts games in Your Collection, and Control Center icons are shortcuts available during gameplay. Those are useful adjacent options, but neither edits a game’s Game Hub or changes the Welcome Hub’s content.

Choose the Welcome Hub layout and background
The Welcome Hub gives you several ways to shape what you see. A preset is the quicker route: select a ready-made arrangement rather than positioning every widget yourself. A custom preset is for choosing from the widgets available to you and deciding where they go. You can also change an individual widget’s size and position, so the choice is not simply between accepting a preset and starting over.
Large Layout is a separate Hub setting. It is an alternative when you want to use the larger layout option, while resizing widgets lets you adjust the footprint of particular items. Sony’s instructions name the setting but do not describe it as a new set of widgets or as a setting for the Game Hub.
Background choices let you use imagery from From PlayStation, Games, or Media Gallery. The first two are sources for PlayStation or game imagery; Media Gallery is the choice when you want an image from your gallery. The display mode affects how the image appears: Slideshow rotates through an album, whereas Showcase displays the full background while the console is idle. Those are different presentation choices, not additional widget layouts.

Step-by-step: customize the PS5 Welcome Hub
- Open the Hub. From the PS5 home screen, open Welcome Hub. This is the page to use for the widget and background changes below, rather than the information page attached to one game.
- Choose widgets. Select Edit Widgets, highlight a widget, and press X to toggle it on or off. This lets you decide which available items are shown. The set of available widgets may differ by region, so not seeing a particular widget does not necessarily mean the Hub has been opened incorrectly.
- Move a widget. Select the widget, press Square, navigate it with the directional buttons, then press X to confirm its new position. Moving changes where that widget sits in the Welcome Hub; it does not reorganize the content of an individual Game Hub.
- Resize a widget. Select it and press L1 or R1 to change its size. Use this along with position changes when you want to give one item more or less room without changing the entire layout.
- Apply a layout. Select Change Preset for a ready-made arrangement, or Create Preset to build a custom one. The preset route is convenient when you want a prepared arrangement; a custom preset is the more hands-on option. You can still manage available widgets and their arrangement through the Hub’s editing controls.
- Set the background. Select Change Background, then choose the From PlayStation, Games, or Media Gallery tab. Choose Slideshow to rotate through an album, or Showcase to display the full background while the console is idle. If you prefer a single image, select a background source and image rather than using slideshow presentation.
- Adjust Hub settings. Open the Hub settings to change followed games, choose the position of temporary widgets, or enable Large Layout. These settings let you tailor the Hub beyond its standard widget positions and background. Their availability and exact on-screen presentation can depend on the current system software.
These labels and button steps are from Sony’s Welcome Hub guide. Menu names can change with system updates, so if a label differs on your console, check the current on-screen wording rather than assuming the feature is missing. Followed games and the position of temporary widgets are Hub settings; they should not be confused with changing the arrangement of information on a game’s Game Hub.
Change the PS5’s generation-inspired appearance
The console also has appearance options separate from the Welcome Hub’s widgets and background. To find them, go to Settings > System > Appearance > Appearance and Sound, then choose a design. Sony documents these generation-inspired design choices in its Welcome Hub support page. This is a system appearance setting, not a way to rearrange a game’s Game Hub. Think of it as a console-wide visual choice, while the Welcome Hub controls described above let you adjust its widgets and background.
Organize games with Gamelists
Gamelists help organize your collection; they do not change the Welcome Hub or a game’s Game Hub. They are useful if the real goal is to group titles together rather than change the appearance of a home-screen page. Sony’s Gamelist instructions give these steps:
- From Games home, open Game Library > Your Collection > Create Gamelist.
- Choose games and follow the prompts. The new list appears at the top of Your Collection.
- To add titles later, open the list and choose Add More to Gamelist, or highlight a game and select Options > Add to Gamelist.
- To remove a title, open the list, highlight the game, press Options, and select Remove from Gamelist.
- To rename or delete a list, highlight it and use Options.
Use a Gamelist when you want a collection you can maintain: create it from selected games, add more later, remove titles, or use Options to rename or delete the list. It is not a replacement for a custom Welcome Hub preset. The list appears in Your Collection, and its job is organizing games rather than changing what a game’s Game Hub displays.

Rearrange Control Center icons separately
The Control Center is the quick-access menu opened during gameplay with the PS button. Its icons can be rearranged independently of the home screen. Sony’s Control Center guide gives these steps:
- Press the PS button to open Control Center.
- Highlight an icon and press Options.
- Select the icon you want to move, move it to the desired position, and press X to place it.
- To hide an icon, move it to Hidden Controls. Some icons cannot be hidden.
Use this menu for controls you want close at hand while playing. It does not alter the Welcome Hub layout or the information shown on an individual game’s Game Hub. Hiding an icon is optional, and the limitation matters: Sony says some icons cannot be hidden. If your aim is to adjust shortcuts without leaving a game, use Control Center; if it is to rearrange the home screen, go to Welcome Hub instead.
Which PS5 customization option should you use?
Choose the setting based on the result you want. For a different home-screen arrangement, edit Welcome Hub widgets, move or resize them, or select a preset. For a personal layout, use Create Preset. For a new look behind the Hub, choose a background source and decide whether to use Slideshow or Showcase. For a larger Hub presentation, enable Large Layout in Hub settings. If you want to group games, make a Gamelist. If you want in-game shortcuts in a different order, rearrange Control Center icons.

Do Gamelists change the PS5 home screen or Game Hub?
