Customize DayZ Expansion by editing the JSON files generated in the server profile, while keeping the matching Expansion mission files and launch parameters intact. Install the mod bundle and mission template, start the server once to generate its profile, change one settings family at a time, validate the JSON, upload it to the active profile or mission directory, and restart. Traders, airdrops, AI, safe zones, mapping, territories and related systems each have their own configuration area; vanilla DayZ gameplay uses a separate cfggameplay.json workflow.
How Expansion configuration is organized
Expansion is not controlled by one master file. A working server combines three layers:
- Server profile settings: Generated files under the profile passed by
-profiles, commonly inExpansionMod/Settings. These hold most Expansion behavior, including general options, markets, airdrops, AI and safe zones. - Mission content: The Expansion mission package imported into the map mission. It carries mission data, economy XML and optional mapping or trader content, plus settings for vehicles, territories and other systems.
- DayZ server configuration:
serverDZ.cfgdefines server-level options and launch-related settings. Vanilla gameplay overrides usecfggameplay.jsonand require an explicit enable flag.
The exact filesystem location varies by host. A managed host may expose the profile through a control panel or file manager rather than a conventional local folder. Always identify the profile actually supplied in the launch command; editing a similarly named folder does nothing.
Install the matching mod and mission files
Use a mod bundle and mission files from the same Expansion release and for the same map. A version mismatch can leave settings apparently ignored even when the JSON is valid. The mission template must be imported into the map mission exactly as supplied, because it contains supporting economy and optional trader or mapping content.

- Install the client-required Expansion mods on the server. These belong in the client-visible mod list so connecting players can load them.
- Install server-only components separately. Components that clients do not load belong in the server-side list.
- Download the current Expansion mission files. Select the template matching both your Expansion version and map, then copy the required folders and files into the active mission.
- Confirm the mission name. The value passed to
-missionmust match the folder name character for character. An extra character, missing character or wrong map suffix prevents the mission from loading. - Start the server once. Expansion creates its profile settings on first launch. Stop the server cleanly before making edits.
Set the launch parameters correctly
Bohemia’s dedicated-server parameters distinguish what clients need from what only the server runs. A typical command includes the following options:
-config=serverDZ.cfg
-port=2302
-profiles=profiles
-mission=missionsdayzOffline.chernarusplus
-mod=@CF;@DayZ-Expansion-Core;@DayZ-Expansion
-serverMod=@ServerSideModThe exact mod folder names and mission path depend on your installation. The important distinction is:

Expansion examples commonly combine -config, -port, -mod and -profiles. Do not copy a sample blindly: substitute your real profile and mission paths.
Find, back up and edit the settings
After the first successful start, stop the server and locate the profile directory. The usual Expansion location is ExpansionMod/Settings beneath the profile path, but a host can add another parent directory. Make a complete copy before changing anything. Keep dated backups so you can restore a known-good configuration after a failed edit.
Edit one settings family at a time. Preserve the existing schema, property names, capitalization, commas, braces, arrays and version fields. Do not replace a newly generated file with an older example unless it was made for the same Expansion release.

Customize traders and the market
Market structure
Market configuration is split between MarketSettings.json and related market or category files. Treat the existing file as the schema. A category normally contains nested item records, and each item must retain its exact game class name. A typo in a class name can make an item unavailable or cause the market loader to reject part of the structure.

- Keep category objects and item arrays balanced. Removing a closing brace or comma can prevent the entire settings family from loading.
- Export the market from a supported editor when possible, then inspect the resulting JSON rather than assuming the export is correct for every Expansion version.
Trader content and locations
Trader zones and optional trader content may also live in the mission package. A market file can be valid while a trader is absent because the corresponding mission content was not imported. Check both the profile market files and the mission’s trader data when a category or location is missing.
Configure airdrops
AirdropSettings.json controls the Expansion airdrop behavior exposed by the installed version. Use fields already present in the generated file or documented for that release. Avoid adding properties from a different version: Expansion may ignore unknown fields or fail to deserialize the file.
Make one controlled change, such as an interval or reward definition, then restart and inspect the server log. If the event does not appear, confirm that the edited file is in the active profile and that the mission and mod versions match. Do not infer success solely from a clean file upload; the server must load the setting at startup.
Configure AI patrols and loadouts
AI behavior is normally defined in AISettings.json together with related mission or loadout files. Nested structures make hand editing error-prone. Start by copying an existing patrol or loadout block, change only the required values, and retain every required array and object.

- Keep patrol definitions and loadout definitions synchronized; a patrol that references a missing loadout can spawn incorrectly or fail to initialize.
- Use a GUI editor when it supports your installed version, but inspect the exported file for class names, brackets and version fields.
- Increase AI activity gradually. Large changes can add CPU, memory and persistence work even when the JSON itself is valid.
Set up safe zones
Safe zones use SafeZoneSettings.json and associated zone data. Enter coordinates for the selected map and choose a radius that matches the intended physical area. Verify the coordinate in-game or against a map reference; coordinates from another map are still valid numbers but produce a zone in the wrong location.
When a zone does not appear, check that the zone is enabled, the radius is positive, the map mission is the one you edited and the relevant Expansion mission content is installed. Restart after uploading the file and read the RPT log for parsing or initialization errors.
Control mapping, interiors, vehicles and territories
Expansion mission and settings files also support map markers, custom mapping, building interiors, vehicles and territories. These systems often depend on mission content in addition to profile JSON. If a marker or vehicle configuration appears correct but nothing changes, compare the active mission folder with the matching Expansion mission template and confirm that the required content was copied.
Custom mapping and building interiors can consume significant resources. The documented troubleshooting approach on an underpowered server is to disable the relevant options in GeneralSettings.json and test again. This isolates capacity pressure; it is not a guarantee that every stall has the same cause.

Change vanilla DayZ gameplay separately
Expansion settings do not replace DayZ’s native gameplay configuration. To use cfggameplay.json:

- Copy or create
cfggameplay.jsonin the active mission folder, alongside the mission’s other files. - Set
enableCfgGameplayFile = 1inserverDZ.cfg. - Save both files, verify their paths and restart the server.
If the file is left in the profile or another mission directory, it has no effect. Likewise, a correctly placed file is ignored until the enable flag is set.
Hand-editing JSON versus a GUI editor

A GUI does not remove the deployment steps. Export the file, validate it, place it in the active profile or mission path, restart and review logs. Do not edit a live file while the server is writing it; stop the server first.

- Stop the server. This prevents a running process from overwriting your edit.
- Back up the current profile and mission files. Include the relevant JSON, mission content and
serverDZ.cfg. - Validate JSON syntax. Confirm balanced braces and brackets, quoted property names, commas between properties and valid values. Use a local JSON validator or editor that reports line numbers; the documentation does not prescribe one universal validator.
- Check the schema. Retain required version fields and use only properties supported by the installed Expansion release.
- Upload to the active path. Profile settings go under the profile’s
ExpansionMod/Settings; mission files go in the exact mission folder selected by-mission. - Start and watch the RPT or server log. Look for JSON parsing, missing-file, mission-load or mod-order errors.
- Test the feature in-game. Check the actual trader, airdrop, patrol, zone or marker rather than relying only on a successful boot.
Troubleshoot settings that do not apply
The server starts, but Expansion behavior is missing
- Verify every mod folder name and the order in
-mod. - Move server-only components to
-serverModwhen appropriate. - Confirm that
-profilespoints to the profile you edited. - Check the RPT log for a failed dependency or a mission-load error.
Settings revert after a restart
You probably edited an inactive profile, uploaded to the wrong host directory or allowed a startup process to regenerate the file. Compare the launch parameter with the path you changed, preserve the generated version field and restart only after uploading the corrected file.
The Expansion missions folder is empty
The hosting guidance for this condition is to delete MissionSettings.json from the settings folder, then restart so mission data can be regenerated or reloaded. Back up the folder first, because deletion is a recovery step rather than a routine edit.
The mission cannot be found
Compare the -mission value with the directory name one character at a time. Case, underscores, map names and extra characters all matter.

Custom mapping or interiors cause stalls
Disable the relevant mapping or interior options in GeneralSettings.json and run a controlled test. If stability improves, re-enable one feature at a time or reduce the scope of the mission content. The result identifies a likely capacity issue but does not establish a universal hardware requirement.
cfggameplay.json has no effect
Place the file in the mission folder selected by -mission and set enableCfgGameplayFile = 1 in serverDZ.cfg. Restart after changing both files.
Choose a hosting workflow that fits your access
Self-hosting gives direct control over the filesystem, startup command, profile path and logs. It also leaves you responsible for backups, updates, mod order, resource monitoring and recovery. Managed hosting reduces that operational work, but a control panel may restrict startup arguments, hide the profile directory or limit access to logs and mission files.
Before committing to either model, verify that you can:
- Set both
-modand-serverMod. - Choose or change the exact
-missionpath. - Access the profile’s
ExpansionMod/Settingsdirectory. - Upload mission files and
cfggameplay.json. - Read RPT or equivalent startup logs and restore backups.
There is no single published hardware threshold that guarantees every Expansion configuration. Resource demand depends on map content, AI, mapping, interiors, player count and other loaded mods. Treat disabling expensive features as a diagnostic test and measure the result on your own server.

For a busy server, keep a simple change record containing the date, file, fields changed, Expansion version and rollback filename. Apply one logical change per restart, and retain the previous working file until the new behavior has been tested in-game. This makes it possible to identify whether a trader edit, AI increase or mapping option caused a later failure.
The reliable sequence is always the same: match the mod and mission versions, launch with the correct profile and mission, edit the appropriate settings family, validate the JSON, upload to the active path, restart, read the log and test the feature. Following that sequence prevents most “settings ignored” problems before they become a server-wide outage.
