Short answer: Open Android Auto’s App Launcher on the car display to see apps that Android Auto supports. Google’s current help pages explain how the launcher and recent-apps area work, but they do not document one universal drag-and-drop method for changing launcher order. A 2019 community reply mentioned a phone setting called Customize Launcher; that menu may be version- or device-dependent, so treat it as an option to verify rather than a guaranteed control.
If an app is missing, first determine whether it is compatible with Android Auto or has been temporarily disabled on the phone. Samsung phones, in particular, can disable apps that have not been used recently. Android Auto also offers display accessibility settings, but those change appearance and motion rather than app order.
What Android Auto calls the “home screen”
People often use “home screen” to describe two different areas in Android Auto. Identifying the area you mean prevents you from looking for an app-order setting that does not apply.

When you ask how to move an app “onto the home screen,” you usually mean the App Launcher. When you want an app to be easier to reach during a trip, the recent-apps area may be the relevant surface instead.

Open the App Launcher on your car display
- Connect your Android phone to the vehicle and start Android Auto.
- On the car display, select the App Launcher control. The label and icon can vary with the vehicle interface, but Google identifies this area as the route to other Android Auto apps.
- Review the apps shown. Only apps that Android Auto recognizes as compatible are eligible to appear here.
- Select an app to open it. If you are moving, Android Auto may restrict typing, scrolling through large lists or other interactions for safety; complete those actions while parked.
The launcher is the documented starting point even when your goal is customization. Open it after installing or re-enabling an app so you are checking the current list rather than an earlier screen.
Can you drag apps into a new order?
Do not assume that touching and dragging an icon will rearrange the launcher. Google’s current Android Auto screen documentation explains how to access apps and the recent-apps area, but it does not provide a universal procedure for dragging, sorting or pinning launcher icons across all phones, Android Auto versions and vehicle displays.
An older 2019 Google Android Auto Help Community response referred to a phone-side setting named Customize Launcher. That post records a historical answer to a user question; it is not confirmation that the same menu exists today. Google’s current screen overview does not establish a universal path to that setting.

How to check for a version-dependent launcher setting
- On the phone, open the system Settings search and search for Android Auto.
- Open the Android Auto settings page and look for an entry labeled Customize Launcher or similar wording.
- If the entry is present, read the controls shown on that specific phone. If it offers ordering or visibility controls, make the changes there, then reconnect or reopen Android Auto and check the App Launcher.
- If no such entry appears, do not install an unofficial replacement or follow instructions that assume a hidden menu. The currently documented Google material does not provide another universal ordering method.
Menu names and availability can change with Android Auto and phone software. A setting found on one handset or older version is not evidence that every vehicle display supports it.
Adding an app: compatibility comes first
There is no general Android Auto switch that turns every phone app into a car-display app. Android Auto supports approved app categories, including music, messaging and news, along with navigation and other categories. An app installed on the phone can still be absent from the launcher if its developer has not enabled Android Auto support or if the app is not currently compatible.
Check Google’s compatible-app list
- Use Google’s Android Auto compatible-app listing to check the app before troubleshooting the launcher.
- For the full compatible-app view in Google Play, sign in to a Google Account and enable personalization if Google requests it. Google states that these conditions are required to see all compatible apps in that view.
- If the app is not listed as compatible, you cannot add it to the Android Auto launcher through a normal launcher setting. Use the phone version while parked only if that is appropriate and safe, or look for a supported alternative in the compatible list.
- If it is listed, install or update it on the phone, open Android Auto again and check the App Launcher.
Compatibility is separate from launcher order. A compatible app can be visible even when you cannot manually move its icon, while an incompatible app cannot be added simply because you prefer its position.

When an installed app is missing
Use this sequence before concluding that Android Auto has lost the app.
1. Confirm that the app is Android Auto-compatible
Check Google’s compatible-app listing and the app’s current Play Store information. The fact that an app opens normally on the phone does not establish that it is enabled for the car display.
2. Open the app on the phone
Google’s troubleshooting guidance specifically notes that some Samsung phones temporarily disable apps that have not been used for a while. Open the missing app on the phone, then open the Android Auto App Launcher again. Google says the app should appear the next time the launcher is opened after it has been re-enabled.
3. Review Samsung’s unused-app battery controls
If the app disappears again or opening it does not restore it, inspect the phone’s battery settings. Depending on the Samsung model and software version, the relevant control may be labeled Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep. Turn off the applicable control for the app, then reopen Android Auto and check the launcher.
Those labels are not guaranteed on every Samsung phone. If your wording differs, look for the equivalent unused-app or sleeping-app setting rather than following a fixed tap sequence from another model.

Use the car display’s App Launcher as the test point. If the app appears after opening it on the phone, the problem was phone-side app disabling rather than a launcher-order limitation. If it remains absent, return to the compatibility check instead of trying to force an unsupported app into Android Auto.

Launcher order versus the recent-apps area
If your goal is faster access rather than a permanently different icon order, pay attention to Android Auto’s recent-apps area. Google describes it as showing recently used navigation, media and communication apps, plus one additional app. Its purpose is quick access to what you have used, while the App Launcher remains the place to browse available apps.
This distinction explains why an app may be easy to reach on one drive and less prominent on another without any manual rearrangement. Recent use can change what is surfaced. It does not prove that Android Auto has accepted a new permanent launcher order, and Google’s current documentation does not promise a user-controlled pinning rule for every display.
How to use recency deliberately
If your vehicle shows the recent-apps area, open the supported navigation, media or communication app you expect to use before setting off. That may make it available in the recent area for the current session, but it is not a permanent pin and is not guaranteed to remain in the same position. Recheck the full App Launcher whenever you need the complete list.
Change the appearance without changing app order
Android Auto includes accessibility options for people who need a different visual presentation. Google documents:
- Dark theme for a darker interface.
- Bold text for heavier lettering.
- Outlined text to make characters stand out from the background.
- Reduced animations to limit motion in the interface.
These controls are separate from launcher customization. They can make labels and controls easier to see, but they do not make an incompatible app appear and do not establish a new icon sequence.
Where to look
Consult the Android Auto accessibility settings on the phone. The exact phone-side route and wording can vary by Android and manufacturer software, so use the labels shown on your handset rather than relying on a universal sequence of taps. Change one option, reconnect or reopen Android Auto, and confirm that the display is comfortable before changing another.

Safety restrictions can make customization seem broken
Android Auto intentionally limits some interactions while the vehicle is moving. Google describes safety lockouts that can prevent typing messages while driving and can restrict scrolling through large lists. If a control is unavailable, the absence may be a driving-safety restriction rather than a missing launcher feature.

Do you need a cable, adapter or new screen?
No physical product is required to check compatibility, restore a disabled app or look for launcher settings. This is a software-settings task. A cable, wireless adapter, replacement head unit or aftermarket touchscreen cannot make an incompatible phone app become an Android Auto app, and buying one does not establish a different launcher order. First complete the phone and App Launcher checks above using the equipment you already use.

A practical customization routine
For a predictable setup, separate the tasks that Android Auto documents from the task it does not currently document as universal.
- Prepare the phone while parked. Confirm that the required apps are installed, current and compatible with Android Auto.
- Prevent avoidable Samsung disabling. If you use a Samsung phone and an app is important for driving, open it periodically and check unused-app battery controls when it vanishes.
- Open the car’s App Launcher. Verify which supported apps are actually available on this connection.
- Check for, but do not assume, Customize Launcher. Search the phone’s Android Auto settings. Use the setting only if your software exposes it and clearly describes ordering or visibility.
- Use recent apps for recency-based access. Apps you have recently used in supported categories may be surfaced there even when no permanent sorting control is available.
- Set accessibility options. Choose dark theme, bold text, outlined text or reduced animations if they improve readability, and verify the result while stopped.
This workflow avoids the most common category error: trying to solve an unsupported-app problem with an ordering control, or trying to solve a visibility problem with an accessibility setting.

- Phone-dependent: Samsung’s unused-app controls and their exact names.
If your vehicle, phone and Android Auto version expose a launcher customization menu, follow the controls shown on that specific system. If they do not, the supported approach is to keep the desired apps compatible and enabled, access them through the App Launcher, and rely on the recent-apps area for shortcuts based on use.
