You can customize WooCommerce’s Add to Cart button in three different layers: change its wording with PHP filters, redesign it with CSS or global styles, and—on a block theme—edit the button directly in the Site Editor. Classic themes use separate filters for single-product pages and shop or archive loops. Block themes use the Add to Cart + Options block in the Single Product template. Keep code in a child theme or a snippets plugin, use documented block styling interfaces, and test every product type and button state before publishing.
Choose the right customization method
The correct method depends on your active theme and on whether you need new wording, a visual change, or a different layout. A label change does not require template editing; a block-theme layout change should not be forced through old PHP hooks.

First identify your theme and the button context
Check whether the site uses a classic or block theme
In the WordPress admin, open Appearance. A block theme exposes the Editor and lets you edit templates and global styles. A classic theme normally exposes Customize and theme-specific settings instead. The distinction matters because a block theme may render the product page from blocks rather than from the PHP template files used by classic themes.
Separate single-product and archive buttons
There are usually two visible contexts:
- Single-product page: the button beside the quantity field and, when applicable, variation selectors.
- Shop, category, and other product archives: compact buttons rendered inside product loops.
WooCommerce supplies different filters for those contexts. Changing one does not automatically change the other, so decide whether your wording should be consistent everywhere or intentionally different.

Change button text in a classic theme with PHP
Use the two official filters
WooCommerce documents these filters:
woocommerce_product_single_add_to_cart_textchanges the label on single-product pages.woocommerce_product_add_to_cart_textchanges the label used in product archives and shop loops.
To use different wording in each location, add both filters:

} );The __() translation function keeps the returned strings compatible with WordPress localization. Replace the English phrases with wording that accurately describes what happens after the click. “Buy now” can be misleading if the click merely adds an item to the cart rather than taking the customer directly to checkout.
Install the code without losing it on updates
- Create or activate a child theme, then open the child theme’s
functions.php, or use a reputable code-snippet plugin that executes PHP snippets. - Paste the filter code into that location. Do not include a second
<?phptag if the file already starts with one. - Save the change and clear any page, object, or CDN cache used by the site.
- Open one single-product URL and one shop or category URL in a private browser window and verify the labels.
WooCommerce specifically warns against placing custom code directly in a parent theme’s functions.php, because a parent-theme update can wipe it out. A child theme or snippets plugin keeps the customization separate from update files.
Decide whether the same label should appear everywhere
If the same text is appropriate in both contexts, return the same phrase from both filters. If archive buttons lead to a product page for option selection, a phrase such as “Choose options” may be clearer than “Add to cart.” On a simple product that can be added immediately, “Add to cart” may be more precise. Your wording should match the action WooCommerce performs for that product type and template.
Edit a block theme through the Site Editor
Confirm the required block is present
A block-theme store must have a Single Product template containing WooCommerce’s Add to Cart + Options block (currently marked Beta in WooCommerce documentation). The block combines the button with quantity controls and, for supported products, variation controls. If the template uses separate or custom blocks instead, the controls exposed in the editor can differ.

Open the Single Product template
- Go to Appearance → Editor.
- Open Patterns or Templates, depending on the WordPress version, and select Single Product.
- Click the Add to Cart + Options block in the template preview.
- Use the block settings sidebar to adjust the available button, quantity, and variation options.
- Use the preview at several viewport widths, then click Save.
The Site Editor lets you change product templates and catalog layouts without editing every template file manually. A template change can affect every product that uses that template, so check a simple product and a variable product before saving a site-wide design.

When the block does not expose the control you need
Do not replace the entire template with copied PHP markup just to change a color or spacing value. First check the block’s settings and global Styles. If a needed option is unavailable, use a narrowly scoped, documented class or a theme-supported extension rather than depending on private internal markup that may change in a future WooCommerce release.
Customize color, size, spacing, and typography
Block themes: use global Styles first
For WooCommerce Blocks, start in Appearance → Editor → Styles. Set the site’s button typography, colors, border radius, and spacing there when the control applies to the Add to Cart + Options block. If your theme is managed in code, the same design tokens can be defined through theme.json. Global styles are preferable because they remain understandable to future editors and do not depend on the exact HTML nesting generated by a block.
WooCommerce’s block developer guidance especially discourages CSS selectors that rely on one block being a descendant of another. In practice, avoid selectors such as “a button only when it appears inside this particular internal wrapper.” Those relationships can change when the block is updated.
Use the documented block button class when CSS is necessary
The documented button component class for WooCommerce Blocks is .wc-block-components-button. A basic example is:

}Scope the rule further if you want the design only in a product area, using a stable, documented wrapper supplied by your theme or block rather than a chain of private element names. Keep this CSS in the child theme stylesheet or the site’s Additional CSS area according to your maintenance workflow.
Classic themes: inspect, then scope
Classic themes do not all output identical markup. Open the browser’s developer tools, select the rendered button, and identify a stable product-context class before writing CSS. A selector scoped to the single-product area prevents an archive button or an unrelated site button from inheriting the same dimensions.
Example structure (the exact wrapper classes vary by theme):

}Replace the example selector with the class you actually find in your theme. Avoid copying a selector that targets a generated, private wrapper when a stable product-area class or documented component class is available.

- Normal: readable text, sufficient contrast, and a target large enough for touch use.
- Hover: a visible change that does not reduce text contrast.
- Keyboard focus: a clearly visible outline or other non-color indicator.
- Active or pressed: feedback while the pointer or keyboard activates the control.
- Disabled and loading: a visibly unavailable state that still communicates what is happening.
- Out of stock: the stock-state message or disabled treatment supplied by WooCommerce should remain understandable.
Check the design against the surrounding background and verify it at narrow mobile widths. Fixed widths, long translations, and large text settings can cause clipping or force the quantity field and button onto an unusable layout.
Move or extend the button area in a classic theme
If the goal is to add content near the button—such as a delivery note, trust message, or quantity explanation—use the theme’s documented actions and filters instead of editing a parent template. Storefront, for example, maintains a documented set of actions and filters, with its full template-hook list in the theme files and official repository. The exact hook depends on the theme and the location where the new content belongs.
Before adding an action callback, inspect the active theme’s hook reference and confirm that the hook runs once in the intended context. A callback attached to a single-product hook will not automatically appear in archive loops. Keep additions short, semantic, and accessible; do not insert a second purchase button that could compete with WooCommerce’s own controls.

Account for product types and button behavior
Simple products
A simple product can normally be added immediately when it is in stock and purchasable. Confirm that your new label still describes an immediate add-to-cart action and that quantity controls remain visible where the store expects customers to use them.
Variable products
A variable product may require customers to choose attributes before WooCommerce enables the add-to-cart action. Do not hide or restyle the variation controls so aggressively that customers cannot tell which option is missing. Test the button before a variation is selected, after a valid variation is selected, and after a previously selected value is cleared.

Products that cannot be purchased
Out-of-stock, unavailable, or otherwise non-purchasable products can display different text or a disabled control. A global text replacement should not imply that clicking will succeed when WooCommerce has correctly prevented the purchase. Verify those states in addition to the normal in-stock view.
Archive-loop variations
Shop and category loops can show a direct add button for simple products, but a link to the product page or an options prompt for products needing configuration. The archive filter changes the text WooCommerce supplies in that loop; it does not turn a non-purchasable or option-dependent product into a one-click purchase.
Test the finished customization
- Clear caches: purge page, object, browser, and CDN caches that could preserve the old label or stylesheet.
- Check both contexts: open a single-product page and at least one shop, category, or search-result loop.
- Check product types: test an in-stock simple product, an in-stock variable product, an out-of-stock product, and a product that requires options.
- Exercise the interaction: click with a mouse, navigate with the keyboard, activate with Enter or Space where applicable, and observe focus, loading, disabled, and error states.
- Check responsive layouts: test common phone widths, tablet width, and desktop. Look for wrapping, overlap with the quantity field, and clipped translated text.
- Verify the cart: add an item and confirm that the cart contents, quantity, mini-cart, notices, and redirect behavior are unchanged.
- Test logged-out and logged-in views: caching, pricing, or membership extensions can render different button states for different visitors.
- Review after updates: when WooCommerce, the theme, or a block package updates, repeat the key checks because block markup and class internals can change.
Troubleshoot common problems
The text changed on the product page but not in the shop
Use both official filters. The single-product filter and archive-loop filter are independent, so changing one leaves the other untouched. Also clear caches before deciding that the filter failed.
The filter runs, but another extension replaces the label
Another plugin or the theme may attach its own callback later or may render a custom template. Temporarily disable one customization at a time in a staging environment, identify which callback wins, and adjust the hook priority only after confirming the conflict. Do not solve the problem by editing a parent theme file.
The block editor has no Add to Cart + Options block
Confirm that a block theme is active and that WooCommerce is up to date. Then open the Single Product template and insert the WooCommerce block from the inserter. If the theme supplies a custom product template that omits the block, restore or add the block before attempting button-specific settings.
CSS works in the editor but not on the storefront
Check whether the rule is in the correct stylesheet or Additional CSS area, inspect the live element for a more specific competing rule, and clear caches. For a block button, verify that the selector includes .wc-block-components-button and does not depend on an internal parent-child chain that the rendered markup does not contain.

The button disappears or becomes impossible to click
Look for an overlay, a zero-width flex item, an excessive z-index, or a disabled state applied by CSS rather than WooCommerce. Remove layout rules one at a time, restore the block’s default styles, and retest a variable product with no variation selected. Never use CSS to conceal required option controls.
Maintain the customization safely
- Keep PHP in a child theme or snippets plugin and record what each filter changes.
- Keep CSS in one maintained location, with comments identifying whether it targets a classic theme or a WooCommerce block.
- Prefer global Styles,
theme.json, and documented classes over private block markup. - Use translation-ready strings and avoid wording that promises a checkout action the button does not perform.
- Maintain a small regression checklist covering both page contexts, simple and variable products, unavailable states, keyboard focus, and mobile layout.
- Apply changes on a staging copy first when the store is processing live orders.
The most durable setup is usually a small PHP change for classic-theme labels, Site Editor controls for a block theme, and narrowly scoped styling that respects WooCommerce’s documented interfaces. That combination changes the customer-facing button without taking ownership of WooCommerce’s purchase logic.
