On a Pixel phone, you can recover dismissed alerts, decide which apps may interrupt you, control what appears on the lock screen, and change notification sound, vibration, or flash behavior from built-in settings. The most important limitation is notification history: it must be enabled before an alert is dismissed, and it keeps dismissed notifications for only the previous 24 hours.
Use Settings > Notifications > Notification history to turn on Use notification history. For an individual app, touch and hold one of its notifications or open Settings > Notifications > App notifications. Lock-screen privacy, sounds, vibration, and flash alerts have separate controls, so changing one does not automatically change the others.

These are separate jobs. Notification history is a recovery list, while app, lock-screen, sound, vibration, and flash settings change how future notifications behave.

Google changes some menu names and lock-screen layouts between Android releases and Pixel models. The paths below reflect the current Pixel help instructions, but a setting can appear in a slightly different place on your phone. If a label does not match, open Settings and search for lock screen notifications, notification history, or the name of the app you want to change.

Notification history, app controls, and lock-screen privacy are available without installing another application or buying an accessory. Keep the phone unlocked while changing settings so you can see the complete options.
Turn on notification history before you need it
Enable the 24-hour history list
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Notification history.
- Turn on Use notification history.
Once enabled, Pixel keeps a list of notifications you dismissed during the last 24 hours. The setting is not retroactive: an alert cleared while history was off cannot be reconstructed later by switching history on.
Open history from Settings
Return to Settings > Notifications > Notification history whenever you want to review dismissed alerts. The list shows notifications retained within that 24-hour window. Tap an item to open the app that sent it, then use that app’s own screen to read or act on the underlying message if it is still available there.
Open history from the notification shade
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to show current notifications.
- Scroll to the bottom of the notification list.
- Tap History.
If you do not see History, check that Use notification history is enabled. A phone with no eligible dismissed notification in the retention window may also show an empty list.
Know what history can and cannot do
- It records dismissed notifications after the feature is enabled.
- It covers the previous 24 hours, not an unlimited archive.
- It does not bring back an alert that was dismissed before history was enabled.
- Tapping a history entry opens the originating app; it does not guarantee that the app still has the original message or that the message can be restored.
Because history can expose the names and content of alerts to anyone who can unlock or inspect the phone, consider your lock-screen and device-access habits when enabling it.

Control notifications for one app
Change an app directly from an incoming notification
- When the app sends an alert, touch and hold the notification.
- Use the notification controls that appear to adjust that app’s notification setting.
- Apply the change, then dismiss the notification or leave it in the shade.
This route is useful when you know which alert is bothering you and want to change it immediately. The exact controls can differ by app because apps may expose different notification categories.
Use the complete app list in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap App notifications.
- Select the app whose alerts you want to change.
- Turn notifications on or off, or adjust the categories and options the app provides.
The app list can be filtered to show Most recent, Most frequent, All apps, or only apps whose notifications are turned off. Filtering helps when a long list makes the app difficult to find.
App-wide controls versus notification categories
Turning off an app’s notifications is broader than changing one category. If an app separates messages, reminders, calls, or other alert types into categories, open the app’s notification page and adjust the individual category where available instead of disabling every notification. Category names and available switches depend on the app and Android version.
For example, you can leave an app’s important category enabled while silencing a less useful category. Do not assume that changing the default notification sound changes every category: category-level sound settings can override the default.
Decide what appears on the lock screen
Open the lock-screen notification controls from Wallpaper & style
- On the Home screen, touch and hold an empty space.
- Tap Wallpaper & style.
- Tap Lock screen.
- Swipe up to reveal more lock-screen settings.
- Tap Notifications on lock screen.
Depending on the Pixel and Android release, you can choose whether notifications appear, select Compact View or Full list, and decide whether viewed notification icons, silent notifications, and sensitive content are shown.

Use the Settings route for sensitive content
Some Pixels also expose the relevant privacy option through Settings > Notifications > Notifications on lock screen > Show sensitive content. Turn sensitive content off when you want an alert to indicate that something arrived without displaying private text while the phone is locked.

Understand the lock-screen choices
- Show or hide notifications: controls whether notification information is displayed on the locked screen at all.
- Compact View or Full list: controls how much of the notification list is visible and how it is presented.
- Viewed notification icons: controls whether icons for notifications you have already seen remain visible.
- Silent notifications: controls whether non-interrupting notifications are included on the lock screen.
- Sensitive content: controls whether private details are shown before the phone is unlocked.
These choices vary by version and model. If your Pixel uses different wording, search Settings for lock screen notifications rather than changing unrelated notification switches.
Change notification sounds, vibration, and flash alerts
Set the default notification sound
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sound & vibration.
- Tap Notification.
- Choose the sound you want for the phone’s default notification behavior.
This changes the default sound, not necessarily a sound that an individual app category has explicitly configured.
Set a sound for one app category
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications, then App notifications.
- Select the app.
- Tap Notification categories.
- Choose the category you want to change.
- Tap Sound and select the desired alert.
If the app does not expose categories, that category-level route will not be available. In that case, use the app’s own notification settings or the broader app notification controls.
Adjust notification vibration
For vibration strength and related haptic behavior, open Settings > Sound & vibration > Vibrations & haptics. The available sliders or switches can differ between Pixel models and Android versions.

Use the camera light or screen for flash notifications
Open Settings > Notifications > Flash notifications. Pixel can use the camera light, the screen, or both, depending on the controls shown on your device. Flash alerts can help when sound is muted or a vibration is easy to miss, but they are a separate accessibility-style alert and do not replace the app’s notification permission.
Google marks some related sound-exposure controls as Android 15 and later. Treat those options as version-specific rather than assuming that every Pixel has them.

When an expected alert does not arrive, work from the app outward. A missing notification can be caused by the app’s own switch, an interruption mode, or a battery-management setting.
1. Confirm the app is allowed to notify
- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
- Find the app, using the list filters if necessary.
- Make sure its notification switch is enabled.
- Open the app’s categories and confirm that the relevant category is not disabled.
If the app recently sent an alert, touch and hold that notification to reach the same controls directly.

2. Check Do Not Disturb
Do Not Disturb silences most notifications. Review whether it is active or scheduled, and check its interruption settings before concluding that the app has stopped sending alerts. A notification may still be present in history or the notification shade even when it did not make a sound or vibration.

3. Review Battery Saver
Battery Saver can stop or delay some notifications to conserve power. If alerts resume when Battery Saver is disabled, the battery mode was affecting delivery or interruption behavior. Re-enable it later if needed, but understand that the trade-off can include less timely alerts.
4. Review Adaptive Battery
Adaptive Battery can also stop or delay some notifications. Check the battery settings when one app is consistently late while other apps notify normally. The exact battery menu labels vary by Pixel and Android release.
5. Use notification history as a diagnostic
If history was enabled before the problem occurred, open it and look for the missing alert. An entry in history indicates that the app generated a notification that was dismissed or otherwise removed from the active shade; no entry does not prove why the alert was absent, especially if history was disabled or the 24-hour window has passed.

You accidentally clear important alerts
- Enable Use notification history immediately.
- When an alert disappears, open the shade and tap History at the bottom.
- Tap the entry to return to its app.
- For alerts that must be noticed promptly, check the app’s category, sound, and vibration settings as well.
History is a short recovery window, not a permanent message archive, so deal with important items before 24 hours elapse.
You want fewer interruptions from one noisy app
- Touch and hold one of the app’s notifications.
- Turn off the unwanted app notification or adjust its available category controls.
- If you need finer control, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications and edit the app there.
- Leave essential categories enabled if the app separates them.
This avoids silencing every app merely because one source is excessive.
You share a workspace and want lock-screen privacy
- Open the lock-screen notification controls through Wallpaper & style > Lock screen, or search Settings for lock screen notifications.
- Choose a compact presentation or hide notifications if you do not want incoming alerts visible.
- Turn off Show sensitive content to conceal message details until unlock.
- Decide separately whether silent notifications and viewed icons should remain visible.
Lock-screen settings affect what can be read at a glance; they do not prevent the app from generating the notification or change notification history.
You miss alerts when the phone is silent
- Set the app’s category sound under Notification categories > Sound if the app supports categories.
- Adjust vibration under Sound & vibration > Vibrations & haptics.
- Consider Notifications > Flash notifications and choose the camera light or screen option shown on your Pixel.
- Check Do Not Disturb and battery modes if alerts remain absent or delayed.

A quick maintenance checklist
- Keep Use notification history enabled if recovering accidental dismissals matters to you.
- Review App notifications after installing an app or noticing a change in its alerts.
- Use category-level controls when you want one type of alert changed without disabling the whole app.
- Check lock-screen visibility and sensitive content after an Android update or when your privacy needs change.
- Set the default sound, category sounds, vibration, and flash behavior independently.
- When an alert is missing, check the app toggle first, then Do Not Disturb, Battery Saver, and Adaptive Battery.
- Remember that notification history covers only dismissed notifications from the preceding 24 hours.
With these controls separated by purpose, you can recover a cleared alert, reduce interruptions from a particular app, protect private lock-screen details, and make important notifications easier to notice without treating every notification as an all-or-nothing switch.
