MPC-HC keeps its major appearance, subtitle, and control settings in separate pages. Use Options > Player > User Interface for themes and display elements, Options > Player > Toolbar and Toolbar Layout for the toolbar, Options > Subtitles for subtitle search and tracks, and Options > Player > Keys for keyboard and mouse bindings. Playback speed is under Play > Playback rate, with the increment controlled by Options > Playback > Speed step.

This guide uses the menu names documented by the MPC-HC project and its 2.8.1 release information, checked October 13, 2026. Because the official releases page can change, treat the labels below as a map rather than a guarantee that every later build will place each control in exactly the same location.

This guide follows the menu names documented for MPC-HC 2.8.1. The project’s current release list is volatile, so check the official MPC-HC releases page if your installation shows different labels or pages. Some interface documentation may move between releases.

Start with the interface settings

MPC-HC separates the overall player appearance from the toolbar itself. Make theme and display changes first, then arrange the buttons you use most often. This order makes troubleshooting easier: if the player looks wrong, you can tell whether the cause is a general user-interface setting or a toolbar-specific choice.

Change the theme and display elements

  1. Open Options.
  2. Select Player > User Interface.
  3. Choose the modern light theme, modern dark theme, or classic theme.
  4. Review the other controls on the same page, including seekbar height, toolbar button size, status-bar details, and seekbar preview options.
  5. Apply the change and close the options window.

The exact combination of controls shown can depend on the build. If you are looking for a particular visual element, use the User Interface page rather than the Toolbar page: the former controls the player’s general presentation, while the latter controls toolbar styling.

Seekbar height and preview options affect how easily you can monitor and scrub through a video. Status-bar choices determine how much playback information remains visible below the picture. Toolbar button size is useful when the default controls are difficult to target with a mouse, especially on a high-resolution display. Change one group of settings at a time and test with a familiar video so you can identify which choice produced a useful improvement.

Hide controls while watching in a window

For a cleaner windowed view, use the setting documented as Options > User Interface > Hide Windowed Controls. In builds that nest the page under Player, open Options > Player > User Interface and look for the same label. This setting is intended for windowed playback; it does not mean that the controls are permanently removed from full-screen or from the menus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hiding windowed controls is most useful when the video window itself is the focus and you prefer keyboard, mouse, or remote commands over visible buttons. If you later need a control that is no longer on screen, return to the User Interface page or use the Keys page to assign a direct action.

Build a toolbar that fits your workflow

There are two separate toolbar tasks: choosing a toolbar design and choosing which buttons appear. MPC-HC documents them as different pages, so changing one does not replace the other. A design changes the visual treatment, while the layout determines the commands and their order.

Choose a toolbar design

  1. Open Options > Player > Toolbar.
  2. Select the available toolbar design that best matches your theme and preferred button appearance.
  3. Check the button-size option if you need larger controls for a high-resolution display or easier mouse targeting.
  4. Apply the setting.

Choose a design that remains legible against your selected light, dark, or classic interface. If icons become difficult to distinguish after a theme change, revisit the Toolbar page instead of changing the entire interface theme again.

Choose and reorder buttons

  1. Open Options > Player > Toolbar Layout.
  2. Use the layout controls to add the commands you need and remove commands you never use.
  3. Move buttons into the order in which you normally use them. Put frequent actions such as play/pause, stop, seek, audio, and subtitle controls near the part of the toolbar your pointer reaches most easily.
  4. Apply the layout and test it with a short video before making further changes.

Keep the layout compact if you often resize the player window. A shorter toolbar leaves more room for the picture and reduces the chance that less frequently used commands become hidden when the window is narrow. Conversely, a living-room PC may benefit from fewer, larger buttons and a shortcut for anything that is not worth displaying.

The current toolbar-customization guidance applies to MPC-HC 2.5.3 and newer. Toolbar images made for older releases are not supported by the newer format. If you install a custom toolbar and it does not appear, first confirm the MPC-HC version and the image format rather than repeatedly changing the layout. The project’s version-specific instructions are in the toolbar customization issue.

For artists: custom toolbar image requirements

Most users only need the design and layout pages. If you are creating a toolbar asset, the project specification requires more structure than a single image. Designs are installed in the MPC-HC installation directory’s Toolbars folder. The specification describes SVG or PNG assets in these button sizes:

Asset size Use
24×24 pixels Standard small button artwork
32×32 pixels Medium button artwork
48×48 pixels Large button artwork
64×64 pixels Extra-large button artwork
16×16 pixels Optional small artwork

Each size is organized into four rows representing light and dark themes plus enabled and disabled states. Follow the naming and layout rules in the toolbar design specification; an image that merely looks correct in an editor may still fail if its rows, dimensions, or format do not match the specification. These requirements concern custom artwork, not ordinary button reordering.

Use the correct size for the button size selected in MPC-HC rather than relying on the player to scale one master image. Scaling can make small icons look soft, while omitting enabled or disabled rows can leave the player without the state-specific artwork it expects. If you are not distributing a complete design, changing the built-in layout is safer than placing a partially specified image in the Toolbars folder.

Configure subtitle search and tracks

MPC-HC supports both an on-demand subtitle search and an automatic search option. Subtitle behavior is configured from the Options > Subtitles pages. Decide first whether you want MPC-HC to search only when asked or to look for subtitles automatically; the two workflows solve different problems.

Search manually with the keyboard

  1. Start the video for which you need subtitles.
  2. Press D to open the manual subtitle search.
  3. Choose a matching subtitle result and load it.

Manual search is useful when automatic lookup is disabled or when you want to choose among several language or release matches. It also lets you reject a result that is close but not synchronized with the particular video file. If you regularly repeat this process, keep the D command available in the Keys table or assign another easy-to-remember key.

Enable automatic subtitle search

  1. Open Options > Subtitles > Misc.
  2. Enable the automatic subtitle-search option.
  3. Open the service’s context menu on that page if you need to configure account credentials.
  4. For MPC-HC 2.8.1, configure OpenSubtitles.com credentials from that context menu when required by the service.

Service limits and account quotas can change independently of MPC-HC. The 2.8.1 release notes document the credential location, but they do not establish that signing in changes the service’s current quotas. Check the provider’s current terms before relying on an account for a particular number of searches or downloads. The release-specific feature is described in the MPC-HC release notes.

When automatic lookup returns nothing, first confirm that the option is enabled and that the service credentials, if required, are entered through the service context menu. Then consider whether the file name gives the service enough information to identify the video. MPC-HC’s setting can be correct even when the provider has no matching result or has imposed a current policy or quota.

Use a secondary subtitle track in MPC-HC 2.8.1

MPC-HC 2.8.1 adds a secondary subtitle track, but it is deliberately limited. Treat it as a way to display an additional text translation, not as a second fully independent subtitle renderer.

Behavior What MPC-HC 2.8.1 supports
Accepted format External, text-based SRT only
Formats excluded SSA, PGS, VobSub, and other formats that can contain explicit positioning
Placement The secondary track is rendered at the top
Subtitle delay Delay adjustments apply to both the primary and secondary tracks
Screenshots The secondary track is not included in screenshots

If a second subtitle does not load, verify that it is an external SRT file and that it does not depend on positioning instructions. If timing is wrong, remember that changing subtitle delay affects both tracks; MPC-HC does not provide an independent delay for the secondary track in this feature.

The top placement is intentional, so plan for the two languages to occupy different areas of the picture rather than expecting MPC-HC to stack both tracks at the bottom. Also do not use a screenshot as proof that the secondary track is absent: the feature is specifically excluded from screenshots even when it is visible during playback.

Customize keyboard and mouse shortcuts

The most reliable way to change a binding is to edit the searchable command table rather than memorize every default shortcut. This is also the best place to inspect whether a command is assigned to a keyboard action, a mouse action, or both.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find a command and assign a key

  1. Open Options > Player > Keys.
  2. Type part of a command name into the table’s search box. Search terms such as “play,” “subtitle,” “rate,” or “fullscreen” narrow the list.
  3. Select the command you want to change.
  4. Use the key or mouse-binding control shown for that command and enter the desired combination.
  5. Apply the change, then test it while a video is playing and while the player window has focus.

The Keys page covers keyboard hotkeys and mouse actions. A binding that appears not to work may be assigned to the wrong command, may conflict with another action, or may be tested while another window has focus. Search for the command again and confirm the final assignment before troubleshooting the video itself.

Make changes incrementally. Assign one command, apply it, and test it before changing several related actions. That makes it easier to identify a conflict and preserves a predictable fallback if a new combination is uncomfortable. For accessibility, choose combinations that are easy to reach repeatedly and keep visible toolbar buttons for commands that are difficult to remember.

Useful documented examples

  • Ctrl + mouse wheel: seek through the video.
  • PageUp/PageDown: move to the adjacent file in the folder.

These examples are documented by the project, but the full table is the better reference when you want to change a binding. The project README describes the Keys page and its search box at the MPC-HC README. PageUp and PageDown are file-navigation commands in this context, so do not assign them expecting them to perform a generic seek unless you deliberately change their bindings.

Adjust playback speed without changing pitch

Playback rate and the size of each rate change are controlled separately. The first setting changes what you hear and see now; the second controls how large the next adjustment is when you step between rates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change the current playback rate

  1. Open the Play menu while a video is loaded.
  2. Choose Playback rate.
  3. Select the rate you want to use.

Change the speed-step increment

  1. Open Options > Playback.
  2. Change Speed step to the increment you want between rate changes.
  3. Apply the setting, then use the playback-rate commands again to check the interval.

When speed changes make voices sound unnaturally high or low, use an audio renderer that provides automatic pitch correction. The project identifies MPC Audio Renderer and SaneAR as providing that correction during speed changes. Pitch correction affects the audio result; it does not change the video’s frame timing or subtitle-track limitations.

Use a smaller speed step when you want fine control over dialogue or language practice, and a larger step when you need quick changes between normal playback and scanning. The setting changes the interval itself; it does not replace the Playback rate choices in the Play menu.

Control MPC-HC from a phone or browser

MPC-HC 2.8.1 includes a remote page in its web interface. It lets a phone or another browser control MPC-HC over the local network. This is an alternative to keyboard and mouse bindings, not an additional keyboard shortcut.

  1. Open the web-interface settings in MPC-HC and enable the interface according to the labels in your build.
  2. Keep the controlling phone or computer on the same local network as the MPC-HC machine.
  3. Open the web interface from the second device and use the remote page for playback controls.
  4. If the page does not connect, check local-network isolation, the host computer’s firewall, and the address or port shown by MPC-HC.

The remote feature is most useful for a couch-based media PC or a machine connected to a television. Use the Keys page instead when you need operation without a network connection or when you require precise, repeatable keyboard commands. The 2.8.1 release information documents the remote page as a local-network control method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A phone or browser remote does not remove the need to configure MPC-HC itself. The host must still be running the web interface, and the controlling device must be able to reach it on the same local network. If your network isolates wireless clients from the Windows PC, the browser page can fail even though MPC-HC’s remote feature is enabled.

Choose the right control method

Control method Best fit Important consideration
Keyboard shortcuts Fast, repeatable commands at a desk or when accessibility depends on keys Bindings are changed in Options > Player > Keys; the player window must receive the input
Mouse and toolbar Visible controls and pointer-based operation Use Toolbar for design and Toolbar Layout for button selection and order
Local-network browser remote Couch-based playback from a phone or second computer Requires the web interface and a functioning local-network connection

Compatibility with your installed MPC-HC version matters more than the control method itself. The secondary subtitle track and browser remote are specifically documented for 2.8.1, while the newer toolbar-image guidance applies to 2.5.3 and later.

You can combine methods rather than choosing only one. For example, keep play/pause and subtitle actions on the toolbar, reserve keyboard combinations for seeking and rate changes, and use the browser remote when the PC is across the room. The practical choice depends on whether you prioritize visible feedback, one-handed keyboard operation, or couch distance.

Troubleshoot common customization problems

The theme changed, but the buttons still look wrong

Theme selection and toolbar design are separate. Revisit Options > Player > Toolbar after changing User Interface, then confirm the button order under Toolbar Layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A custom toolbar image is ignored

Confirm that the design is installed in the MPC-HC installation directory’s Toolbars folder, uses SVG or PNG, follows the required size and row structure, and targets MPC-HC 2.5.3 or newer. Older toolbar-image formats are not supported by the newer format.

Automatic subtitle search does not return results

Check that automatic search is enabled under Options > Subtitles > Misc, then review the service’s context-menu credentials. A service-side quota or policy can change even when MPC-HC’s setting is correct.

The second subtitle file will not load

Use an external text-based SRT file. SSA, PGS, VobSub, and other position-aware formats are excluded from the 2.8.1 secondary-track feature. Also remember that the second track is displayed at the top and is omitted from screenshots.

A shortcut does nothing

Search for the command in Options > Player > Keys, verify the assigned key or mouse action, and test with MPC-HC focused. For file navigation, remember that PageUp/PageDown acts on adjacent files in the folder, not as a generic seek command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Speed changes alter voices

Keep the playback-rate setting you want, then use MPC Audio Renderer or SaneAR for automatic pitch correction. Adjust the interval itself under Options > Playback > Speed step.

The remote page will not connect

Verify that the web interface is enabled, that both devices are on the same local network, and that the Windows host firewall allows the interface. Network isolation can prevent a phone from reaching the MPC-HC machine even when the address and port are correct.

Version checklist before changing settings

  • Check the installed version against the official releases page.
  • Use the 2.8.1-specific secondary-subtitle and web-remote expectations only when your build includes those features.
  • Use the toolbar-image format documented for MPC-HC 2.5.3 and newer; do not reuse legacy toolbar images.
  • If a menu path differs, search the Options window for the setting name rather than assuming the feature was removed.

With those version checks in place, MPC-HC’s customization model is straightforward: User Interface controls the player’s presentation, Toolbar and Toolbar Layout control visible buttons, Subtitles controls lookup and tracks, Keys controls keyboard and mouse actions, and Playback controls rate behavior.

Save a short note of the settings that work for you, especially after changing several shortcut bindings or installing a custom toolbar. That makes it easier to reproduce your layout on another Windows media PC and to identify which feature changed when you move to a newer MPC-HC release.

How do I hide controls in a window?

Use Options > User Interface > Hide Windowed Controls. In builds that place the page under Player, look in Options > Player > User Interface.

What is the difference between Toolbar and Toolbar Layout?

Toolbar selects the toolbar design and related appearance choices. Toolbar Layout controls which buttons appear and the order in which they appear.

Which toolbar image sizes does MPC-HC support?

The specification describes SVG or PNG artwork at 24×24, 32×32, 48×48, and 64×64 pixels, with optional 16×16 artwork. Designs use rows for light and dark themes and enabled and disabled states, and are installed in the MPC-HC installation directory’s Toolbars folder.

How do I find a shortcut command quickly?

Open Options > Player > Keys and use the table’s search box to locate the command before changing its keyboard or mouse binding.

Can I use a mouse action instead of a keyboard shortcut?

Yes. The Keys page covers both keyboard hotkeys and mouse actions. Test the new action with MPC-HC focused so another window does not receive the input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I change the playback-speed increment?

Open Options > Playback and change Speed step. Select the current rate from Play > Playback rate.

How can I control MPC-HC from a phone?

MPC-HC 2.8.1 documents a remote page in its web interface. Enable the interface, keep both devices on the same local network, and open the remote page from the phone or browser.

The Bottom Line

Customize MPC-HC in layers: set the theme and display behavior in User Interface, choose the visual toolbar and its buttons separately, configure subtitle lookup and the limited 2.8.1 secondary SRT track under Subtitles, and use the searchable Keys page for keyboard and mouse control. Playback rate and its step size live in different menus, while the 2.8.1 web remote provides a local-network alternative for couch viewing. Check your installed version whenever a menu, toolbar format, subtitle feature, or remote option does not match these instructions.
